Hi Readers
We’re very pleased to have “Tony of Tony’s gyms” as our Pattaya Personality and
cover story for this issue as I’m sure you’ll agree he has had a fascinating life. Also he
and his wife share a keen interest in helping the soi dogs of Pattaya with their shelter
currently housing over a thousand dogs, which is very relevant to our theme of this
magazine - caring for pets whilst in Thailand.
Also as we prepare for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday on August 12th it’s a
great day to celebrate mothers in Thailand and Kevin Cain’s story on page 16 looks
at the history and tradition of Mother’s day throughout the world.
We have updated our daily events guide so if you have a regular event that happens
on the same day each week that you would like us to bring to the attention of our
readers please write to pattayatrader@pattayatrader.com and tell us all about it or
message us on our Facebook page.
Glenn Cowan’s article on page 38 prepares us for the upcoming Olympics and we
congratulate our very own Rodney Charman on his forthcoming 2nd year’s presidency
of the Rotary Club Eastern Seaboard Pattaya . You can read his acceptance speech
on page 50.
Finally the nominations are now all in for the Pattaya Trader’s Business Awards . Go
to bizawards.pattayatrader.com to see the remaining top 5 in each category and vote
for the one you wish to win. We want to hear from you so get those votes in to us
now.!

| COVER STORY
W
hen I first arrived in Pattaya one personality certainly stood out and
that was “Tony of Tony’s Gym” maybe because of the large folded
arms image staring down from the hoardings around town, or the fact
that he had been a known figure in Pattaya back in the early days when the place
was just a sleepy fishing village.
Or perhaps because there was a whole section of Third road given over to him,
with the Fitness centre, open air gym, lido hotel and his own white, gold romanesque house. Whatever the reason, five years on I decided a large notepad and allowance of plenty of time would be needed to interview Tony as there were bound
to be many stories to be told. What I wasn’t quite expecting was the generous hospitality of the welcome to his home complete with the introduction to his charming wife and children. In fact it is impossible to
write about Tony now without mentioning his family because you
have the feeling that at 60 they are the reason he finds he is far
more grounded, calmer and happier than his younger self.
Emerging from a military family with a good school and good connections at the age of 16 Tony was sent to Germany where things “didn’t
really work out for me” so he took himself off at the tender age of 17
to Los Angeles, USA. Although enrolled in a high school the 70s
was a time when many young Thai guys were bringing in heroin
and Tony remembers how he “hung with some street gangs” and
envied the flash guys with their Rod Stewart hairstyles, fast cars
and faster girls.
Needless to say the next three years saw some good and bad times
with many of his street friends not making it to his 20 years . Luckily Tony’s love
of music took him away from a similar fate . Through playing keyboards with Rock
and Roll bands he was able to run from the lure of LA parties and drug fuelled lifestyle. Instead he went to Columbus Ohio
in a Camaro that took him on to St Petersburg Florida amidst a few brushes with the law including one at the Texas border and another due to an
aggrieved Dad who didn’t quite appreciate his daughter joining Tony for
the ride!
From the age of 17 until he was 23 Tony managed to get by (apart from
a few close shaves), without American residency which his mother finally
got for him when she herself came to the States. The family were together
in LA and Tony reunited with his brothers NIkki and Tommy. The “scene”
back there had moved on to Acid and Coke but luckily for Tony the job
offers came in and Tony was able to travel back to Florida to play in a band
at Treasure Island.
He also got himself a job as bus boy at the famous Don Caesar Hotel a wonderful
pink palace on the Florida coast, once a weekend getaway for the likes of Al Capone and the like back in the 1930s where Tony graduated from bus boy to waiter
and fed himself on the left over steaks from rich clientele.
The following years saw him on the road with bands and even playing in Vegas,
finally becoming a co-owner of a club “Tony and Friends” when still only 29.
However over the next six years there were “good and bad times” and by the age
of 35 Tony returned to Bangkok. With his proficient keyboard talent (Tony can also
play classical piano music) he was employed by The Dusit Thani group and then
the Sheraton Hotel His promotion to Entertainments Director at the Sheraton saw
his years living in the States stand him in good stead as he had a real talent for
organizing events and knowing what the American guests wanted. For the next
five years he measured his success by his mode of transport: Year 1 Tuk Tuk, Year
2 Battered old Car, Year 3 Truck, Year 4 Mercedes and year 5 Ferrari!

COVER STORY
Pattaya beckoned with a venue called
Delaney’s (situated where Dicey Reilly’s
is now) and when the resident American
band were fired Tony rented some space
on Walking street and put them to work
there. He proudly told me his was the
first music based club as everyone else
insisted that only Gogo bars would work.
However Tony’s love for R&B bands and
American musicians was infectious and
gave him a lot of joy he even started
singing with the band. Unfortunately his
success provoked jealousy in others, his
band was poached to join another club
and he was squeezed out of his rented
space having to find a new spot “After
the tree”. This was deemed to be the unfashionable part where he opened on his
birthday October 31st 1998, but he made
it work and business went well.
With this success it was time to diversify but Tony remembered the words of a good friend who had started the famous founder of
The Guitar Centre who had recommended that Tony :
“Do something you like because if you do that you’ll work your ass off !”
Therefore as Tony enjoyed keeping in shape he opened his first gym on 3rd road – there are now 21 in Pattaya and 5 in Bangkok.
So on to 2003, when Tony’s wife recommended they do something goof for Pattaya as it had been so good to them. As a keen
animal lover her choice was to start a shelter for the many Soi dogs on the streets. So Tony bought 2 rai of beach front land in
Jomtien to let the dogs be kept. However, neighbours were less keen on his choice of location and he was forced to sell the
space albeit for a healthy profit – having bought the land for 6 million baht he eventually sold for 40.
Today the shelter has been relocated to the Sattahip area where there are now some 1100 dogs! Volunteers come and go and
Tony has supporters and critics many suggesting that he should build in door shelters and euthanize the sick and the old.
However he himself is very content with how it is progressing, 90% of the animals are doing well and rather than “put them
down” he prefers to fix/neuter them, feed and let them roam around the space.
Some tourists or short stay Pattaya residents have come to him with their pets wishing to leave them behind at the shelter
“that is not a good idea” he warns “the shelter for them would be like prison”.The pampered, domesticated pooch is not the
dog to mingle with the street dogs collected up by Tony’s volunteers, far better he advises to find a good family and a good
home to leave them with. Certainly Tony himself really knows the value of a good family and a good home.

hilst Mother's Day is held dear in many cultures throughout the world, it is doubly special in Thailand being celebrated as it is on the Queen's birthday, August 12th,This is a day that rings forth with pageantry, emotion and
beauty as Queen Sirikit is almost held in the same high esteem as her husband King Bhumibol Adulyadej who is
deeply loved and revered by his people. Therefore Mother's Day takes on a highly significant place in the Thai calendar.
The Thai people tend to celebrate Mother's day in both a formal traditional manner and also as a fun event. Early in the
morning the day will start by giving alms to the monks and
showing respect. Schools typically host a Mother's Day ceremony, where students have meticulously practised for weeks
rehearsing formal performances. On the appointed day, mothers come to their child's school and each pupil kneels at their
mother's feet, paying respect and gratitude for all that she has
done for them.
On this most special of days white jasmine flowers are a common sight in Thailand, as they are the symbol of maternal love.
The white colour denotes the purity of a mother's true love,
which will never change.
Throughout the world, Mother's Day is celebrated differently
in different countries. For instance in China carnations are the
most popular gift whilst in Samoa there are elaborate song and
dance performances throughout the country.
But where do the origins of Mother's Day come from?
The celebrations seem to originate right back to ancient Greece and the old
spring celebrations to honour Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.Ancient Romans
also celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother
goddess. The celebration was made on the Ides of March by making offerings
in the temple of Cybele and lasted for three days. Festivities included parades,
games and masquerades, the celebrations were so notorious that followers of
Cybele were banished from Rome.

Early Christians celebrated a sort of Mother's Day during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This was to honour the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ.
Much later came Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom, was traditionally a day for
people to visit the church where they were baptised.
Nowadays the celebration of Mother's Day is more of a commercial affair and the modern day origins can be attributed to three women in the United States.
Around the 1880's a woman called Julia Ward
Howe suggested that a celebration should be
held annually for all mothers which petered
out about ten years later.Around the same period, Juliet Blakely initiated Mother's Day in
West Virginia and her sons dutifully paid tribute to her each year and urged other families
to join in. And in 1907, Anna Jarvis held a private Mother's Day celebration in memory of
her mother. She played a key role in arranging
a church service that attracted over 400 children and their mothers.
Finally in 1912, a Mother's Day International
Association was founded to promote the festival to other countries.
It is a common feeling now that Mother's Day is largely a commercialised celebration
that mainly benefits card and gift companies, flower shops, restaurants and hotels all cashing in on the event. It is an interesting side note that Anna Jarvis unsuccessfully filed a lawsuit to stop the over-commercialisation of Mother's Day.
Mother's Day around the world.
Mexico – Celebrates on the 10th of May when the day is celebrated with gusto as churches organise special masses, a traditional meal of Tamales and Atole is also served as breakfast to the mothers.
Brazil – Brazil commemorates this special day on the second Sunday in May with lavish
children's performances and church gatherings. Often large multi-generational barbecues and
parties follow.
Peru – The indigenous Andean population celebrate the gifts of Mother Earth, or Pachama-
ma, in early August. Pachamama is an ancient mythological goddess beloved by the Andeans
as the bringer of fertility but also cited as the cause of earthquakes. The special day is called
Martes de Challa.
Ethiopia – Mother's Day is celebrated at the end of the rainy season, as part of the three day Antrosht festival, dedicated to
mums. Family members come with a large feast and daughters traditionally bring vegetables, butter, spices and cheese, whilst
sons bring meat including a lamb or even a bull.
Serbia – Mother's Day takes part of a three day series of events in December. Firstly there is Children's Day, when kids are
tied up and must agree to behave before they are unbound. On Mother's Day, it is the mum's turn to be tied up, where she
remains until she supplies treats and small gifts to her children. Finally the dads are
tied up until they give their families Christmas gifts.
The world over Mother's Day is celebrated, perhaps on different days and in different
manners. But the emotion and love that ties families together is basically the same. It
is a special day that serves as a reminder of what all mums do for their families every
single day, and the honour they deserve because of it.

Asalha Bucha Day
Asalha Bucha Day also known as Asahna Bucha Day is another highly important date in the Buddhist calendar and one that is respected and celebrated throughout Thailand. This special day normally takes place on the second full moon day, of the eighth lunar
month. In 2016 it will take place on Tuesday 19th July and is a celebration of events that happened around 2,500 years ago. Asalha
Bucha meaning to pay homage to the Buddha.
Asalha Bucha commemorates the first Dharma (teaching) given by the Buddha to his first monk. This act gave birth to the Triple
Gem of Buddhism; namely the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha (disciple).
After the lord Buddha attained Enlightenment he spent seven weeks by the Bodhi Tree. Afterwards he decided to teach Dharma
to others, in fact it was to five disciples. Kondanna, the group head was the first to achieve the Eye Of Dharma or the first level of
enlightenment. He was then ordained and became the very first monk. From that very day the Wheel of Dharma had been set in
motion.
The Lord Buddha's first sermon was about two things that Buddhist monks should not practice;
1. Being involved in any form of sensual pleasure as this lowly nature belongs to commoners and not holy individuals.
2. Self-mortification (the inflicting of pain on oneself. as this is not the practice of holy individuals, it has no benefit.
As a result of the first sermon, celestial beings in every realm from earth sprites to the Brahma beings all sang the Lord Buddha's
praises. The sound resonated through thousands of universes and an incomparable brightness pervaded everywhere as a result of
the celestial powers.

How to look after your pets in Thailand.
Once the regulatory conditions have been satisfied and your pet is finally living with you in Thailand there are many things you
can do to help them keep cool and healthy in their new environment. For example you should exercise your dog in the early
morning and also at night when the temperature is at it's coolest. Remember to take enough fluids for your furry friend and
make sure to take lots of breaks in the shade.
Wherever possible let your dog swim in the water, this is of course easy if you have relocated by the coast but perhaps more
of a challenge in the country or city. Also when indoors it is still important to keep your home as cool as possible. Fans and
open windows are more preferable to air conditioning which your pet will not be used to.
Ensure that your pet has suitable bedding that is airy and cool. There are even special cooling mats that are now available on
the market specially designed for pets. Remember to constantly give your dog a haircut, a fur coat is extremely hot and your
dog’s pelt is exactly the same. A nice short back and sides will help to keep your pet cool and happy. In fact it is important to
do everything you can to hinder bringing your pet's body heat up as it will take them a long time to get cool again. Of course
this means constantly supplying fresh, cool water and even feeding your pet cold food,
Signs of heat exhaustion
Keep an eye on your pets at all times and look for any signs that they may be suffering from heat exhaustion. There are three
tell tale conditions that you must be aware of:

BREXIT – Independence or Lemmings Day?
By Kevin Cain
W
ho would have thought that the
people of the United Kingdom
would vote in favour of leaving
the EU? Certainly not the Bookies, as on
the eve of the referendum the odds were
definitely in favour of a vote to remain in.
All the TV pundits were citing that it was
too close to call and certainly for all us
expats the result was as clear as mud.
As the results slowly trickled in on
Friday morning it became apparent
that the country had aired its opinion
regarding national sovereignty. Over
72% of the population voted showing
the significance of the referendum. The
fall out politically from both sides of the
channel was immense and immediate. A prime minister fell on his bloodied sword and European fat cat bureaucrats spat their
dummies out. The shadow cabinet lost MPs faster than Jeremy Corbyn could count and a spate of racial abuse and hate
crime swept the country.
Nobody predicted the outcome and everybody was in a state of shock, even the leaders of the campaign to leave the
European Union seemed scared witless at the immensity of what they had achieved. But what are the implications of the UK
opting out? It is not completely clear but many so called experts have predicted that the following will occur:
Firstly, it could take two years for the process of Britain actually leaving to be formalised. Also, best case scenario, Britain
may be able to negotiate access to the European market not so very different from what it has now.
An emergency meeting of European foreign ministers may voice their opinion that the delinquent previous member should
leave the club with the utmost haste. But until Britain triggers article 50 of the Lisbon treaty and formally announces its
withdrawal from the EU it seems there is little European ministers can do.
It was a Conservative government that signed the Treaty of Accession in 1972 against a backdrop of strong domestic
opposition. A referendum was not held at the time and the British people were faced with a faits accomplis and although many
in Europe may feel that they have been snubbed by the UK, it is worth bearing in mind that our established trading deals will
continue to be just as important to the Europeans as the British.
Secondly, the financial situation of the country is at best extremely uncertain. Initially it is expected that the Sterling will suffer
greatly in the markets and this may plunge the country into a recession although no analysts can quite seem to agree how bad
this may be or what long term effect this will have on the currency and financial markets. Back in April the UK government
predicted that exiting the EU could cause the British economy to shrink between 3.8% and 7.5% by 2030 but this is mostly
considered to be purely a wet finger in the air wild guess.
Finally, by voting to leave the EU it seems possible that the four countries that constitute the United Kingdom could break
up. Definitely Scotland is very pro the EU and resents being governed by a parliament in London. The implications of a split in
the United Kingdom are as hard to predict as the implications of the UK leaving the EU.
However one considerable warning shot has been fired across the UK's rocky bows by the credit agency Standard and Poor.
They have stripped the UK of its final gold plated AAA credit rating downgrading the country to AA.
So where does all this leave us? The answer is that nobody quite knows. The rhetoric and bluster from both sides before the
referendum seemed to be based on supposition and what might happen. There is only one indisputable fact: the people of
Britain have made the decision that their membership of the European Union come to an end.
What the consequences of that
momentous action may be is far from
clear. In the interim period probably
stormy waters lie ahead and the long
term future of the United Kingdom is
far from certain. The continued spate of
recriminations and doom mongering is
not helping the situation one iota. It is
time the country as a whole accepts their
fate and pulls together to make a new
Britain strong and resilient enough to
stand on it's own two feet.

| TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS
By John Borthwick
Following last edition's Green theme our travel writer John Borthwick has his own thoughts on the matter......Ed
Voluntourism … low-impact travel … carbon offsets …. As travel becomes ever more complicated, how can we trip the
planet fantastic — or at least Thailand — without trashing it further?
Extreme no-impact travel would mean that you stay home, sitting near-naked in the backyard with a stack of recycled
National Geographics and imagining all the great places you might have gone. Score ten points for being PC. “Nul points”
for fun. “Tourists aren't going to row there in a mung bean canoe,” an Australian tourism CEO once told me, sarcastically,
referring to “green” travel.
Being an eco-friendly traveller means striking a balance between
not going anywhere (“Save the Planet — Stay At Home”) and the
self-indulgence of not giving a stuff about any impact, any place. In
between these polarities a traveller has to duck paintballs of tourism’s “greenwash”. (Example: a five-star resort, built by levelling a
rainforest, that now brags about its eco-lightbulbs.) Thailand fortunately has plenty of sustainable green travel activities.
Rafting. On the Nam Khong River, way up north, west of Pai, we’re
paddling not in a mung-bean canoe but a six-person rubber raft.
The 45-km river run will take a day and a half, ending near Mae Hong
Son. We stroke down burbling alleys of water — slow rapids, you
might say — that are colonnaded by stands of bamboo and teak,
with a stained-glass jungle canopy above us. Come late afternoon
we reach a jungle camp deep in Lumnampai National Park where
we pass the night beneath a basic shelter. With stars snagged in the
trees and frogs burping in the darkness, we share the ancient ritual
of sitting around a campfire, talking story with strangers and new
friends. Next day we paddle on, stop for a good wallow in a riverside hotspring, and then paddle some more. Come mid-afternoon
we reluctantly beach our rafts at Mae Surin National Park — and
wish that the river were twice as long.
Kayaking and Jungle Trekking. The camel-hump hills of
Khao Sok National Park (inland, midway between Khao Lak on
the Andaman Coast and Surat Thani on the Gulf) frame the huge
Ratchaphrapa Reservoir. The lime-green waters of its Cheow Lan
Lake are perfect for kayaking, especially when you launch straight
out from one of its little “raft house” resorts — cabins built on pontoons beside the forest shore. After paddling comes trekking. Gib-

bons boom, mostly unseen in the jungle but it’s easier to spot
the rioting, long-tailed macaques doing their no-net trapeze
stunts through the jungle. The local hornbills are much more
reclusive. “There are plenty here,” the guide assures us. “Lies,
damned lies and tour guides,” we assure him, straining hopefully to see the Greater Alleged Hornbill.
Cycling. You can pedal yourself delirious in Thailand, riding
along in the breeze on out-of-town trails and backroads. A
three-day ride heading south down the Gulf coast to finish at
Chumphon initially takes us through a landscape of saltpans,
fish farms and mangroves. South of Hua Hin we pull in for our
first overnight hotel stop. Next morning we’re on a road so
close to the ocean that spray bursts across us. In a few more
hours we are amid the forest and limestone ramparts of Sam
Roi Yot National Park. Our route is mostly off main highways as we pedal through the lyrically named province of Prachuap
Khiri Khan. Macaques skitter through the trees, we roll past empty waves and half-moon bays, and the blue hills of Burma
rise to our west. Our final day is an easy 15 km ride beneath a corridor of fir trees beside an endless beach — cycle touring
doesn’t get much better than this.
Save an Island. Thailand recently took the unusual measure of protecting a pristine island that had become too popular, and
thus degraded. Koh Tachai on the Andaman coast is now off-limits to all visitors. It’s perhaps an uncomfortable reminder to
boat operators, tour companies and
local developers that the term “marine
national park” no longer means “tourist stomping ground.” Along that same
glorious coast, however, tourists and
divers can still visit the Similan and
Surin Islands and further north, dive
at famous Richlieu Rock. Meanwhile,
well-regulated Koh Laoliang, off the
Trang coast, allows only 40 pre-booked
visitors at a time. Think snorkeling,
rock climbing and sea eagles; forget
day-trippers, phone and WiFi.
Elephant Ethics. Rockin’ the how-
cial elephant rides are increasingly

Two Cool Animal Acts. At Khanom, on the Gulf near Surat Thani, the locals are proud of their pink dolphins, some 60 in
all. Here we join a dolphin-watching cruise in the marine national park waters. The local Flippers don’t disappoint, surfing our
boat’s bow pressure wave; and — yes — they really are pink. Meanwhile, south of Prachuap Khiri Khan town, the local Thai Air
Force base is home to a protected forest and its troop of langur monkeys. They sport Punk Einstein hairdos and have wide,
white-framed eyes, and when they swoop from the trees to gently cadge bananas, it’s high impact (on us) travel of the most
sustainable kind.

Food for Health
By Belinda Wilson
W
e all know what we like to eat and sometimes what we
“should” eat although the two do not often coincide and
this month I thought I’d concentrate on foods that will help
us just through our eating them by keeping us healthy and relieving
health problems.
For example if you are a migrane sufferer I am sure you will be
happy to try just about anything that helps with this debilitating
affliction and foods that have been reported as helping are:
QUINOA
Quinoa is a currently very trendy and popular superfood packed
with protein and nutrients including iron, copper and magnesium.
It’s known to help relax blood vessels and reduce the frequency of
migraines. It can also help with high blood pressure, reducing the
risk of heart attacks. Also FATTY FISH such as sardines, herring and trout are known to lessen the severity and frequency of
migraines. Research suggests fatty fish, high in omega 3, can lower production of chemicals in the body that cause migraines.
Therefore a serving of fatty fish 2-3 times a week is recommended to treat migraines. GINGER also has a long history of
relieving pain associated with migraines as it works as an anti-inflammatory and helps treat nausea often accompanying
migraines. .
GINGER can
also help with a less serious problem but one that
with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise can affect
many of us is. Poor digestion, bloating , indigestion, and nausea
can all be helped by drinking ginger tea – add a few slices of ginger
to boiling water or add the juice from a small piece of ginger and
eat with a spoonful of honey. DRIED PRUNES are a more common
remedy for constipation being high in fiber, potassium and vitamin
A. Also BEANS can prevent you becoming constipated and help to
sustain a healthy digestive system. Baked beans are packed full of
great nutrients to keep you healthy including protein, iron, calcium
and fibre. The insoluble fibre in baked beans can also help protect the
colon lining from cancer. YOGHURT is a probiotic and contains a high
amount of good bacteria that can relieve indigestion, constipation and
diarrhoea. Look for ‘live’ or ‘active’ culture yogurt.
We all know that citrus fruits help with prevention and treatment of
colds but did you know that
GARLIC has been proven to reduce the chances of catching a cold
and can help cold sufferers recover faster. It’s most effective when
eaten raw but you can also salt granules or capsules.
If you find yourself feeling tired instead of reaching for more coffee or
energy drinks try
RAW CHOCOLATE AND COCOA known to boost energy and help
brain function. This is because sluggishness and fatigue are often a
common symptom of a magnesium deficiency. However this is not
just an excuse to grab a bar of processed chocolate but rather one
with high cocoa content as in the Food department at Central Festival
which has bars with 70, 85 and even 99%. Or try
RED PEPPERS
that contain iron and can increase the body’s intake of oxygen and OATS
rich in calcium, magnesium, vitamin E and vitamin B. Why not start the day with a bowl of porridge to beat morning tiredness?
Oats can also be beneficial if you’re suffering with stress and can help improve your skin.
Good night’s sleep
CHERRIES proven to be an effective super food in reducing sleep
problems. The melatonin in cherries helps increase sleep time and
improve sleep efficiency. For best results drink cherry juice or eat the fruit
one hour before bed. Cherries can also ease gout and combat cancer.
Also
WALNUTS are rich in melatonin and tryptophan helping improve the
quality of sleep and o include antioxidants that help protect the body against
diseases such as Parkinson’s Alzheimer’s, and type-2 diabetes.

THE SPORTSMAN
T
hose of you who are familiar with Soi 13 Pattaya Beach Road will be
aware of the Sportsman Pub and Restaurant which has been a drinking
and eating institution in Pattaya for just under twenty years.
As well as offering live sports from FI to the Premier League, the Sportsman
has a golf society and offer Visa services. But it is their excellent food and
drink that entices this lively pub to it's patrons. The menu to say the least, is
extensive a full range of western and Thai meals to suit all palettes.
To start with there are a vast range of All Day Breakfasts , snacks, starters,
toasties and sandwiches. If you fancy something a little more substantial
then delicious traditional favourites and gut busting burgers are a staple daily
offering.
Then for a tasty lunch or a lighter option, the Sportsman creates succulent
salads with zingy dressings and piquant pastas served with garlic bread and
dusted with freshly grated parmesan cheese.
Incredibly the food does not stop there, the Thai menu is a very extensive 20 items long and is a good as any Thai food served
in Pattaya. And perhaps for the British and Australian punters there is an Indian curry section with a classic starter selection
of samosas, bhajias and Bombay potatoes with the relevant dips and chutney accompaniments. The main dishes are classic
curry house fare; Tikka masala, Madras, Korma, Vindaloo and Jalfrezi simply pick your meat to create a perfectly authentic
curry.Make sure you leave enough room for dessert as the traditional English puddings and pies are too good to ignore, there
is even a cheese platter which is rather a rarity in Pattaya restaurants.
The Sportsman has Daily promotions which are great value for money and are hard to beat. For instance on Mondays all
draft Heineken is 99B and on the following day Guinness is 170B. Wednesday offers Burger & Chips plus a San Mig for a
very sporting 195B and if you happen to be in the pub on a Friday then the All you can Eat Buffet (pizza, pasta & salads) is

a steal at 249B. Of course the Sportsman still offers its famous Sunday Carvery including 2 soups, 5 roast meats and all the
trimmings at 425B. Or for something a little different try a Lamb Doner Kebab served with fresh salad and homemade chilli &
garlic mayo, at 175B it is cheaper than many of the
roadside vendors and twice as tasty.
The Sportsman is much more than a great sports
pub. Regulars and visitors alike are equally
welcomed and there is always something going
on. From fun promotions like the monthly Samsung
Galaxy draw, Tuesday’s Quiz Night with free
pie and chips to the regular Daily Specials food
promotions all washed down with ice cold beers
and select wines from the extensive wine list.
If you have never visited the Sportsman then do
yourself a favour and pop down there one afternoon
or evening for a game or two of pool and judge for
yourself the food and drink on offer and the more
than friendly service.

Friday August 5th sees the commencement of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, or Rio 2016 to you and I.There are a number
of firsts associated to this particular Olympics.
It will will be the first Summer Olympic Games under the IOC presidency of Thomas Bach. Rio will become the first South
American city to host the Summer Olympics. The first for a games to be held entirely during the host country’s Winter Season
and the first to be held since 2000 in the Southern Hemisphere.
Bidding process
Four Cities submitted bids to hold this year's Olympics and as normal there were three rounds of voting that took place before
the eventual winner was unveiled. Chicago were eliminated after picking up just 18 first round votes. Tokyo the next to go in
the second round, leaving Madrid and Rio to battle it out for the crown.
There were quite a lot of restrictions put in place of the bidding cities this time around. One of the most important elements
was that there should be no direct influence give to any of the 115 voting members. Cities were not allowed to invite any
International Olympic Committee (IOC) members to visit. In addition to this they weren’t allowed to send anything that could be
constructed as a gift. This didn’t stop the cities from lavishing huge sums of monies on sports media and general international
media campaigns. These monies found their way via the various PR and media programs that were being run by the official
campaign centres.
Project Rio
Almost as soon as the results of the bid was announced, Rio sprung into much needed action to improve its waning
infrastructure.A large scale investment in the historical downtown area has seen the birth of the Porto Maravilha project. The
main coverage here is to dramatically develop the port area and increase the city centre”s attractiveness.Urban renovation
involved some 700 km of public networks for water supply, drainage, gas, electricity and telecommunications. 15,000 Trees
were planted as well as three sanitation treatments plants.
Venues and Infrastructure
The athletes village is thought to be the
biggest built in Olympic history. The first
of many thousands of athletes and team
officials will start moving into the village
on the 24th July. There are 31 apartment
buildings, some of which are as high as
17 floors. This will be the home to more
than 17,000 athletes for their entire time
in the games. Facilities are such that
it is thought the guests won’t need to
consider going outside. All day to day
conveniences are covered, including
laundries, convenience stores, beauty
salon, hairdressers, post office and even
a bank.

A round-the-clock dining hall is
anticipated to provide in excess of 60,000
meals per day. The gym facilities are what
you would expect with just under 2,000
square meters of allocated space for
athletes to take advantage of, 24 hours a
day. The Maracanã Stadium will host both
the opening and closing ceremonies, as
well as holding the finals of the football
tournament. Athletic events will be held
in the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange,
Technology
Cisco are the official supporter for both
the Olympics & Paralympics in Rio. All
networking equipment including mobile
and fixed broadband equipment, IP
routers and networking security solutions
will be supplied by the tech giant.
Unveiled for the first time courtesy of
Getty Images will be a brand new technology from Mark Roberts Motion Control. It is thought these new robotic cameras will
show a whole new side to Olympic Sports. Traditionally cameras were installed into the roof area and although images were
good, they were fairly hit & miss, without much in the way of adjustments available. However, this new technology means that
the odds of capturing something spectacular have been greatly improved.
Security
Crime has definitely come under the spotlight since the award to host the games was made.
Even the Mayor of Rio has voiced concerns that there are ‘big issues” facing the city. However, the IOC were made aware of
these concerns during the bidding process itself.
Of course, it should be noted that Rio is no stranger to hosting global events, with the recent World Cup taking place there in
2014.
The Zika Virus
Alert level 2 has been activated in Brazil to help deal with the Zika virus. Local transmission means that mosquitoes are
capable of spreading the virus when coming into contact with humans. Although it is thought that the mosquitoes that spread
Zika don’t live at elevations of about 2,000 Meters due to environmental conditions. Travellers to elevations higher than this
are only thought to be at minimal risk of getting Zika from a mosquito.
The biggest worries come from pregnant women, who can pass the Zika virus to their unborn babies resulting in serious
birth defects. It is believed that sexual transmission of the Zika virus from a male partner is also possible. There have been a
number of high-profile withdrawals from Rio with the likes of golfer Rory Mcllroy, Adam Scott, Marc Leishgman and Vijay Sign
all deciding not to attend the Olympics. As well as high profile golfers, there has also been a spate of NBA stars dropping out.
Names like Steph Curry, LaMarcus and Russel Westbook have all announce they will miss the event.
State of Public Calamity!
If the Zika virus wasn’t enough to contend with, on June 17th the state of Rio de Janeiro declared a “state of public calamity”.
This essentially boils down to a financial crisis that will prevent the state from honoring its commitments to the Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
It is believed that the crisis is that severe it could bring about
a total collapse in health, education, public security and also
environmental management.
No Russian Athletes
On top of the above, the entire track and field team from
Russia has been barred from taking place in Rio.This
decision comes on the back of recent well documented
issues with anti-drug testing.A report had been produced
stating that 236 tests required from Russian athletes were
either cancelled or declined dating between Nov 2015 &
June 2016.
One thing is for sure, Rio will certainly be a headline
grabbing games but hopefully for the right reasons ! Watch
this space….

The Tour de France 2016
F
irst launched as a newspaper publicity stunt in 1903, the Tour de France instantly proved itself an epic test of endurance,
with competitors in the first race pedaling through the night on grueling stages that lasted upwards of 24 hours. Even
back then at the very outset, cheating was also endemic. World wars canceled 11 races and the routes took place mostly
on unpaved roads.
This year on Saturday July 2nd the 103rd Tour de France will take
place. There will be a total of 21 stages and a distance of 3,519km
will be completed. This includes a grueling combination of; 9 flat
stages, 1 hilly stage, 9 mountain stages including four summit
finishes, 2 individual time trial stages and thankfully 2 rest days.
The 103rd Tour de France will visit three neighbouring countries
including Spain, the Principality of Andorra and Switzerland.
• The Four Likely Favourite Riders
Four riders have come to the attention of the bookies and media as
possible winners of this years race;
Chris Froome
Chris Froome (Team Sky) has been installed by the bookmakers
as the early favourite after a route favourable to his skill set was
announced in Paris. Twice winner Froome, will be licking his lips at
the prospect of a 37km time trial through the Ardeche region, with
his performances against the clock a key feature of his 2013 win.
Nairo Quintana
Nairo Quintana (Movistar) who had pushed Froome all the way in
the 2015 race has voiced that he is excited that the time trials are
not completely flat. Giving him a chance to peg Froome back and
not letting him get to far in front.
Fabio Aru (Astana) and Alberto Contador (Tinkoff)
will likely give the former two riders a run for their money and will be
dangerous competition.
Of all the main contenders it is hard to predict how Aru will do, given that he's never ridden the Tour before and it’s likely to
be Contador's final roll of the dice in the Tour as he is saying he will retire after 2016. But it is difficult to write off a man who
is so consistent in three week races.

Gesink (Lotto). However this year’s race brings a sad end to
IAM Cycling's participation in any future events. The team's
founder, Michel Thetaz confirmed last month that the team
would cease operations at the end of the season, citing
difficulties in finding a co-sponsor. IAM has competed in
each of the last two Tours de France, but has not managed a
stage win. There are also strong rumours that the Tinkoff team
is likely to cease racing also, so perhaps there may be a lot of
good riders and staff without jobs in the future.
Whilst this is a far away story from the big teams with huge
sponsorship deals, it does pose a very pertinent question. Is
the future going to be dictated by a few elite teams with the
smaller ones slowly dropping out of the sport? Surely if this
is the case then it cannot be good for the Tour de France
or cycling in general for that matter. The less fashionable
and smaller teams bring their own special advantages to
the sport. For one, they are considerably better at bringing
So does the 2016 Tour de France route suit any of them?
Other than the time trials, Froome's destiny may be sealed
again on Mont Ventoux. His climb in 2013 up the bald
mountain pretty much won him the Tour, and even though
that performance was used against him in 2015, Froome will
want to prove his dominance there again. Whilst it has been
evident how strong Quintana can be in the high mountains, the
steeper the better, and with plenty of jaw dropping gradients
on offer during the three weeks, he will have a number of
opportunities to leave Froome in his dust.
Give Fabio Aru a mountain to ride up and he'll devour it. At
the Vuelta earlier this year he held his nerves to put on a
masterclass in the penultimate stage, and also in the Giro he
won two consecutive stages in the very high mountains. His
rivals will look to hunt Aru down in the first few climbs of the
Giro to find ways to beat him back off the pace. If it is the Aru
that won in Sestriere in May who turns up on the Tour then
who knows what might happen.
Contador finished fourth and fifth in the 2013 and 2015 Tours
respectively, withdrawing in 2014 through injury but going on
to win the Vuelta. Then in May he won the Giro ahead of Aru,
but struggled to match that form in the Tour two months later.
This time he will be saving all his energy for the last bite of the
Tour, something his rivals should be careful of.
Other riders that will be pushing the favourites all the way
and will be definitely contending in the overall battle at the
2016 Tour de France include: Richie Porte (BMC), Tejay van
Garderen (BMC), Bauke Mollema (Trek Factory) and Robert

new and upcoming riders to cycling and helping to develop
their skills and techniques. The larger teams seem to select
established and already successful competitors as they can
pay the money.
Cycling needs to develop riders from the grassroots level and
to give them a platform to compete against the best, otherwise
how does a young prospect develop? It is a conundrum that
must be high on the agenda on the governing bodies. The
Tour de France is essentially a bike race and that is why we
are captivated watching it. But it is also known for it's scenery
and magnificent Chateaux, small quaint towns, rolling
landscapes and cheering crowds. The route traditionally visits
sites of historical and cultural significance. Tune in to the Tour,
and you will inevitably learn some history en route as well as
witnessing one of the greatest sporting events of the year.

Reef fish Phuket
H
i Folks, due to the bad weather and the poor fishing
in the Gulf of Thailand I went to Phuket to do some
fishing. I got the overnight bus direct, 5pm to 8am at
Phuket Town and 10am at Chalong pier. The hotel Orange
overlooks the pier car park, handy for the 7-11 and is quiet at
night! Well recommended at 700 Bht a night.
So after booking in, at midday I stood outside the hotel when
the local taxi mafia jumped in. After a short chat in my pidgin
Thai, I had a meeting with the long tail captain: Khun Dam
who would take me out fishing at 2pm that day for four or
more hours at a cost of 2,000 Bht. I tried to bargain him down
but nothing doing. I later found out that 3,000 Bht was the
going rate. Also I managed to get him to take me trolling
around Koh Lone the nearest island 5 kms away.
He was on time and although the bait was not as fresh as
I like, off we went. I rigged up for trolling like I do here, 4lb
braid, small swivel, 6lb fluorocarbon with a small hook. I
started trolling just as we got to the point off the island, tricky
stuff as the long tail prop got close to the main line a few
times. Not five hours on Phuket and trolling! Then he stopped
the boat “water not come out of engine when going slow” I
had a look and sure enough, he was right. So it was bottom
fishing until going home time. I got a lot of small bottom fish
and small horse mackerel fish. The locals like this type of fish
and ignore the tuna fish which are plentiful, except on my
chartered boat! 6.30pm on the dock I paid him in full, but
as I wanted to go out again I said that if the same problem
happened again I would only pay half.
He called me back a day later saying everything was fixed.
Off we went again and for 90 minutes we trolled around Koh
Lone. One small silver fish and a spotted half beak was all I
had caught and the captain got bored and took me to a bottom
fishing mark. I did not know what he had in mind, my pidgin
Thai and his limited English meant a lot of misunderstandings.
Getting angry here in Thailand will not get you what you want,
quite the opposite, so grinning and bearing it and hoping for a
result is the name of the game. Once again the bottom fishing
was ok, I got quite a lot of different types of fish. But it was
a long way to go just for bottom fishing, I was hoping for a
decent sized surface fish, up to a kilo and I’d be very happy.
At the end of that trip I booked Khun Dam again, this time for
a 6hr trip out to Koh Hay about 10 kms out.
46
46
PATTAYA TRADER
The last trip was a repeat of the second outing, after trolling
around and not getting anything, the captain got bored and
took me bottom fishing and the bottom fishing was ok, got
lots of small reef types, nothing over a pound. However I did
tick a few boxes, just not the right ones! I know that trolling
close to shore on Koh Lone and Koh Hay is the same as
Koh Krok here. And that next time going out a bit further and
over deeper water might be the answer. The tourist boats that
run out to the outer islands troll at speed for 1 or 2 kilo fish
with heavy duty rods, then it’s stop, swim and eat time before
some general bottom fishing in deep water on the way home.
Well it’s ok for the people that have never fished before,
everyone poses with the one “fish of the day” picture to show
off back home but it’s not my cup of tea.
The bus back was a disaster, I got the 6.30am to Mo Chit
in Bangkok instead of the 7.30am one as I thought an extra
hour would be a good idea, until this bus went via Krabi and
arrived 2 hours later than the 7.30! However I still managed
to get a minibus back to Pattaya and was home by 12.15am.
the total transport from door to door and back cost 3,000
Bht. Five nights hotel bill was 3,500 Bht and three fishing
trips 6,000 Bht. Email me at plamafia5@aol.com if you want
details. I found out from Khun Dam that the cost of the boat
would be the same if I took some friends along, so all in all
not a bad runout and next time my fishing buddy who speaks
perfect Thai will be going along. Have fun, Roger.
……………..Last minute news, Scott aboard Capt Deang’s
boat got 16 decent fish, first good catch in awhile, photos
next month. Let’s hope the fish are in!

From the high-powered Super Cars, through diverse categories for ‘touring’ cars, pickup trucks, small production cars
and even tiny ‘eco’ cars, the bumper programme enjoyed real strength in depth. There were two new classes joining the format
this year, ‘TCR Thailand’, an exciting new global racing car format that has now reached these shores, and ‘Super Compact’
which allows teams to develop smaller cars themselves before the organisers equalize performance to provide close racing.
But all eyes were focused on the Super Cars – and really one in particular
caught the attention. Lamborghini’s Huracán Super Trofeo LP620-2 has rattled
the racing world over the last year. One of our leading top tier drivers, Sarun
Sereethoranakul, was looking for a new mount to replace his Porsche and carry
him to a title challenge and so he plumped for the Italian supercar. The big
question was could the Huracán replicate its international success in Super Car?
Sarun answered that question emphatically as he planted his new car onto pole
for all three races, yes there were three races for Super Car in Buriram for the
first time, and he led all three from green lights to checkered flag to take three
untroubled victories and move into the lead of the drivers’ championship points
standings while his team emerged at the top of the Teams' classification. It was
a clean sweep and a job well done.
In fact these were Sarun’s first wins in Super Car. He’s made the breakthrough
to the winners’ circle and he’s certainly very well prepared to make a serious
challenge for the title. He’s also highly ambitious and wants this title. But there
is still a long way to go.
The story didn’t end there as many teams took up the chase of the Lamborghini,
notably Toyota Team Thailand and B-Quik Racing, both were back to top form.
With major revisions to the Toyota 86, the factory-supported outfit was at the
business end of the action and Nattavude Charoensukhawatana nabbed an
excellent third place and looked quick all weekend while B-Quik’s two Audis
were right in amongst the front-runners every time the lights turned green.
Daniel Bilski is another to have swapped away from a Porsche and B-Quik
Racing has brought in a second Audi R8 LMS Cup for him to run this year and
the two second and one third place he scored in Buriram have transformed his
positioning in the running order and he now sits very handily in second place
in the provisional Drivers’ classification. Team leader Henk Kiks in his regular
Audi was also a podium and points scorer, but, crucially, he took the fight to
the dominant Lamborghini in Race 3 on level terms and that all means Sarun
can’t expect to run away and hide this year. All in all it was a great weekend for
B-Quik, which has also branched out into the ‘junior’ Super Car GTC.

In the second race it was an experienced Super Car hand
who swept to victory as Pete Thongchua claimed maximum
points in the #17 Mazda RX-8 to get his drivers’ title challenge
off to a great start.
In fact there was much than just the victory as the Rotary
Revolution built Mazdas rose to the occasion and claimed the
Teams' trophy in both races. Astounding results for this small
concern that only last year embarked on a highly ambitious
plan to develop its own breed of racecars. That plan – or
maybe dream was a better word – was thoroughly vindicated
in the North East and they must now be considered capable
of mounting a serious challenge for the teams' title.
Then there was the ‘Amateur’ (AM) class, which is a new
addition to the programme, and it hit the sweet spot the
moment the ‘gentlemen’ (albeit fast and capable gentlemen)
took to the track. Pinet Piyaoui was a well-deserved
winner of the first race on Friday and then on Saturday
that ‘Sereethoranakul’ name rose to the fore once again,
as, while Sarun was wrapping up the overall race win in his
Lamborghini, his brother Saravut, claimed AM victory in his
first ever Super Car race (on the Friday his car had expired on
the warm up lap pushing his debut back 24 hours) to give the
‘family’ a lockout of the top step of both Super Car podiums.
And then Khun Saravut repeated the feat again in Race 3 –
that gave the Sereethoranakul family a hoard of five out of six
winners’ trophies from the weekend (and in fact five wins from
five starts). But the AM class was highly competitive and hard
fought from start to finish. With three runners up spots claimed
and after never being out of the fight for P1 all weekend
long, Paul Kanjanapas has raised his game this year and the
Porsche driver departed from Buriram as the provisional AM
points’ leader – and hungry for a championship trophy.
There were plenty more success stories to emerge from
GTM’s hot and hectic weekend in Buriram. Toyota added one
of its star drivers, Manat Kulapalanont, to the category mix
and he proceeded to really shake up the order, hustling the
pace setting KTM.
The weekend proved to be a superb way to start the new
season for Super Car GTM and GTC and it was the best
possible advert for what Thailand’s premier racing category
has to offer. The competitive bar has gone up once again and
everybody has responded to the challenge. Expect more of
the same when Super Car GTM and GTC resume at Buriram
in July. After that the series will be heading here, to Pattaya,
for its third round, to be held as usual at Bira Circuit.
Meanwhile, the new season for Super Car GTC also kicked off
in Buriram and here there were also new faces and new cars
as this ‘feeder’ category steps up to the plate to become the
second tier ‘Super Car’ racing category in Thailand. As ever
for ‘GTC’, the balance swung lap by lap and from the two
races there were two different winners in two different cars.
One of those two cars was brand new to GTM. The rakish
Reiter Engineering-built KTM X-Bow GT4 has been added to
Vattana Motorsport’s racecar portfolio and in the first race it
proved just as fast as it looked, Narasak Ittritpong planted it
on pole and then powered to victory to hand the menacing
carbon-fibre machine a perfect debut win. A successful
introduction to Thai racing life for the X-Bow and another note
in the history books from the weekend.

R-Motorsport Powered by Conti-X were
in action last weekend for Round 2 of
the Toyo Tires 3K Championship at the
Bira International Circuit on the outskirts of
Pattaya. As the team missed Round 1 due to
the car not being ready, scoring points this
weekend was vital for them to mount a serious
title challenge. The challenge was even greater
when it was realised that due to Thomas’s Class
A driver ranking within the Royal Automobile
Association of Thailand he would have to drive
in the top tier races meaning he would be
significantly out powered by other cars on the
grid. The DC 5 with its standard road engine
has approximately 200 BHP other cars on the
grid were in the range of 400-600 BHP and
four wheel drive.
Thomas a racing driver with over 36 years’ experience
was unfazed about the task that lay ahead and
concentrated on squeezing as much out of the car as
possible, knowing the tight corners would be where he
could make the time up that he would inevitably lose on
the straights. Qualifying began in searing heat with the
track temperature rising every lap giving Thomas more
traction and helping him securing Pole Position in Race
1 and P2 in Race 2.

As the lights went out for Race 1 Thomas and the
underpowered DC5 were swamped at the start losing
several places on the main straight down to the first
corner, however the Dane with years of experience on the
aging track was soon catching the more powerful cars
in the corners, managing to claw back a few places and
eventually finishing a very credible 4th. Races, 2, 3 and
4 produced even more points with Thomas finishing in
second place for each race and narrowly missing out on
the top step of the podium in Race 4.
Although the odds were heavily stacked against the team,
the impeccable driving from Thomas kept them in the
chase and proved TR-Motorsports can mix it with the big
boys! Before the next Toyo Tires 3K Round a new spec
car will be readied and upgraded to hopefully match the
performance of the other teams on the grid.

"Congratulations to our own Rodney Charman who is now
undertaking his 2nd year as president of the Rotary Club
Eastern Seaboard. Here is his acceptance speech. Ed"
W
ell I can’t do a farewell speech as the out going president but I can just tell you that this past
year has flown by, and has taken me too many provinces in Thailand accompanied by fellow
Rotarians and friends. Our two Global Grant Projects for Clean Water brought me to places
like Krasang, Buriram, Buayai, Namphong, Chumpae and all the way up to Loei in the North where we
installed some 77 water systems at schools and handed over more than 4300 water filters to the school
children families. These two huge projects with a total value of over 5.5 million Baht would not have been
possible without the efforts of Martin Brands and the international sponsors that he brought in, the Water
4 Life team, the cooperating Thai Rotary clubs and all those that joined to make it happen.
My venture also took me to the Burmese border to Mae Sot where, with support from our sponsors we
are doing projects at the learning centres for Burmese migrant children.
Also near the Burmese border is the Bamboo School in Sai Yok. I joined the Bamboo School committee
earlier this when we delivered a truck full of rice and gave all the children Christmas bags which was a
very heart-warming experience.
Hans Peter, Adolf, Suree, Gerda, Sue and David have
done a great job in raising funds for Bamboo School.
A big thank you to Tony Sales and his team who
worked very hard over the years organising the
annual LBWVC here in Pattaya. At last year’s
competition I was very honoured to present Catherine
a 250,000THB cheque for the Bamboo School with
which they have been able to build and furnish a new
library. Just as a reminder: this year the event is on
5th November.
I would also like to thank the many members and our
Forces (Friends of Rotary Club Eastern Seaboard) for
the help and support they gave over the years at Christmas time, selling and delivering our Christmas
Bags. A special thanks to Marianne and Daniel Biel for their trips to Khon Kean for the Children and
many of you know the heart feeling look from the poor children on receiving their bag of goodies.
I have great respect for Peter and Nittaya Rottmann in helping poor families in Krasang. I personally
witnessed their devotion and how much this is appreciated when I joined them to see some of the
families last year.
Unfortunately I have not been able yet to join Carl, Joy, Aad and Witha to see with my own two eyes all
the wonderful work being done on building and renovating the two schools in Pakse Laos with help from
sponsors in the Netherlands and the UK.
I certainly intend to visit this worthy project later this year.

Yes, our club motto is “Beyond Frontiers” but thanks to our club local community project director
Peter Schonherr we have also done some very rewarding projects in Pattaya and surrounds. Peter
has worked hard in helping the poor and needy ie with Kate's Project and Gerry KOTO. Peter was
instrumental in the setup of Khun Phim’s temporary day care centre after Sanuk Pattaya had to close
down. The centre is now under the care of the Human Help Network Foundation Thailand. Earlier
this year Peter managed to get further financial support from the Child Right Organisation in the
Netherlands and was proudly presented a Plague of Appreciation during the official opening of the
new Drop In Center in March this year.
Now Peter is working along with our project manager CP Martin Brands to get another Global Grant
which will help transform the Human Help Network Foundation Thailand Day care Center into an
ASEAN Education Center for children of migrant workers from Cambodia and Myanmar.
This new Rotary project will be funded by a grant from the Rotary Foundation, and contributions once
again from De Vaan Goosen Foundation as the main sponsor, and Rotary Club Pijnakker and their
District in the Netherlands. Local sponsors are Rotary E-Club Dolphin Pattaya International where
their CP Dr Otmar & Dr Margret Deter are part of the project committee, Rotary club Eastern Seaboard
and our District 3340.
I am very honoured to have been presented
with a Paul Harris Award this evening.
A President is only as good as the people he
or she works with so I must thank my Board
especially Jan in his work as Secretary
and Brian our treasurer for keeping good
accounts on our club and project funds.
And not to forget the management and staff
of Siam Bayshore who look after so well and
all you fellow Rotarian and friends who have
been a Gift to the World this past year.
I would now like to propose a toast to the new Rotary Year.
Thank you all for coming

Behavioural economics
A look at why traditional models of finance are increasingly inadequate
at explaining stock market movement and why the fledgling discipline
of behavioral finance may hold some of the answers.
History seems to move in cycles and economics is no
exception. In 1759, at the dawn of the industrial revolution, Adam Smith published his seminal treatise “The
Theory of Moral Sentiments”, he ushered in a new period in the history of economics, often referred to as
the classical era, and produced a compelling account
of human decision-making, which probably makes him
the first behavioural economist.
A century later, the tide has turned. Neo-classical
economists had assumed intellectual supremacy and
severed all ties with the social sciences. In an attempt
to emulate the success and splendours of the natural sciences, they developed an elaborate theoretical
framework based on the rationality of human behavior, which enjoyed considerable popularity well into
the second half of the 20th century. At the core of this
model is the so-called Efficient Market Hypothesis,
which posits that human beings are perfectly rational,
maximise utility and act on the basis of full and complete information- a model of man often referred to as
homo economics.
As we know today, if the majority of investors were
completely rational, irrational behavioural patterns on
the stock market should cancel each other out. Bubbles and crashes should not occur. However as the
bumps and lurches of the 1980’s 90’s and the fin-desiècle period show, (Black Monday of 1987, Asian crisis
of 1997, Russian summer of 1998 and the bear market
of 2001 to 2003), markets are not always efficient; nor
54
54
PATTAYA TRADER
are people always rational. You may test yourself: Have
you ever wondered why today many people eat fast
food, defer saving for retirement and watch popular
movies, although most are determined to eat healthily,
invest wisely and read a Dostoevsky novel tomorrow?
The trouble with “homo economicus” is that, in a nutshell, he does not exist.
Today we have gone back to neo-classical models to
make more accurate decisions about people’s decisions and how they affect markets. This revitalised approach is commonly known as behavioural economics
or, when applied to stock markets, behavioural finance.
On a microeconomic level, behavioural finance explains the biases and decision making errors of individual investors that distinguish them from rational actors.
These departures from rational behavior, whether occasional or regular, may be due to a variety of factors,
Issue 189 | JULY 2016
BUSINESS NEWS
such as incomplete information, limited cognitive skills or stress. Prospect Theory developed by Nobel laureates Kanheman
and Tversky, points out that investors are risk averse when considering profits but tend to be risk takers when faced with
losses, which goes a long way to explaining why investors tend to cut their profits and let run their losses, instead of vice versa.
On a macroeconomic level, behavioural finance can shed light on market anomalies, such as stock or sector mispricing as
well as well as market bubbles.
Interestingly one of the most persistent stock market anomalies is due to a calendar effect. It is encapsulated in the old
adage “sell in May and go away but buy back on St. Leger day” What the saying in effect suggests is that positive stock
market returns are usually concentrated in the months
from November to April, whereas the period from May
to October often exhibits poor or negative returns. As
recent research on the Irish stock market, which is one
of the oldest in the world, has shown, the excess returns that can be earned by following this strategy are
statistically significant.
Even though trends are likely to persist in the future, it
will be difficult for private investors to remain completely rational in their trading decisions, and to consistently capatilise on market inefficiencies. In this context,
computer based investment programmes, which follow
a disciplined trading strategy stand a better chance of
long term success.
Maybe it is one of the ironies of behavioural finance
that it teaches us not how irrationally other investors
behave, but how biased we all are in our investment
decisions.

| EXPAT LIVING
By Belinda Wilson
AN EXPAT'S STORY
B
eing an expat invariably means missing things from an old home whilst enjoying what’s available in a new one. Living
in the tropics – or even living anywhere in the world on a budget, sometimes means that you can’t always have the
luxurious lifestyle you yearn for. However there are a few little luxuries that can help your day to day lifestyle and here
are just some suggestions ……..
A hammock. There's nothing more luxurious than chilling in a hammock with a good book and if you can’t accommodate
one then a good comfortable place to sit on a balcony like a small patio couch with a sunset cocktail by your side or a good
cup of tea might be just the thing.
A good mattress or if that is budget prohibitive a mattress topper or even a really good pillow – any product which improves
your sleep. Sleep is such an important thing yet it's easy to fall into the trap of getting just enough to get through the day but
sleep has so many more benefits apart from merely giving you energy to get things done. I'm sure most people know this
already but better sleep will boost your mood, boost your energy and lower your risk of developing mental problems.
Get some earplugs, or noise canceling headphones. Or if its you neighbours or the sounds from a local soi that are in
danger of driving you crazy, find some time to block them all out.
Take yourself off for the afternoon …. If you’ve had a hard week or even a hard month or are just feeling a bit homesick
or in need of a treat go somewhere that lifts your mood for a couple of hours. This could be a trip to the cinema or a mall for
some window shopping, a massage, walk along the beach or a trip to Starbucks to sit and watch the world go by.
A dimmer light switch in the bathroom so nice when getting up in the middle of the night and don’t want to wake the other
half or if you’re having to get up really early in the morning when you’re not quite adjusted to harsh lighting.
Clean and tidy your living space. You have no idea the impact a messy room is having on your psyche. You will feel like
you're living in a hotel when you can see the floor, your shelves are all straightened, and there's no dirty dishes. Pick up after
yourself so it stays tidy. Learn to develop this habit.
Enjoy locally purchased fruits that cannot be grown back in your previous home for example mangos, coconuts,
rambutans the plentiful cheap supply will make you appreciate your new location.
Get your entertainment sorted ….. You tube, Netflix, and Spotify premium where you can access any song, artist, or
podcast.
Bring the outdoors in… a few potted plants or fresh flowers can brighten the home.
Get a Pedicure Most men in Thailand have no problems going for a massage but often think going for a pedicure is far too
feminine. However a nice foot soak and rub, and having your nails cut can
make you feel like a king and literally put a spring in your step.
Spend as much on your morning coffee as you can afford…..that
might mean getting a grinder and purchasing good quality beans, whatever
you can do to make the first cup of the morning taste so much better.
Make a nostalgia purchase – occasionally we all need a treat and if
we are feeling homesick then why not splash out on something you haven’t
tasted for years. If you go to Villa Market and find your favourite chocolate
bar or even better if you have friends and family visiting ask for tea bags
and anything that you really miss – just to keep you going until your next
trip back.

he daily excursion from Pattaya to Bankok and
back is becoming more and more popular as
the demand is getting greater. There is growing
commerce between the two great cities in business
as well as tourism and as many Thai residents
are buying a new or second homes in Pattaya it is
increasingly popular to travel between the capital and
the seaside resort.
Development and upgrading of the motorway
network, namely Highway 7 has been a boon to road
transport. However, commuters should be aware that
using this route is soon to get more expensive as a
new toll has been constructed a few kilometers from
Pattaya.
SOLUTIONS
So what options are open to the traveler should
he wish to travel from Pattaya to Bangkok? Most
westerners would automatically think of the train
but do not expect Thai train services to match that
of Europe or the Americas. Even though it is the
cheapest option the fare being just 31 baht, the daily

Business and Pleasure
I
n the late 1980s, a Project Manager for an international
company came to Bangkok to oversee a large construction
job in the city. The venture would take more than six
months so the company rented a large house which he shared with
the Construction Manager and Chief Engineer. Of course, with
three busy men in the one house, they needed someone to take care
of the place so they hired a Thai maid/cook. She was young and
pleasant looking so they made a pact – no-one was to fraternize with
the maid.
All went well for a couple of months but then the manager
noticed the maid was turning up later each day and leaving earlier.
Some days she would arrive too late to make them a hearty
breakfast and, on one occasion, he came home early to find her
sitting and doing her nails while watching television instead of
preparing their dinner. She made no attempt to hide the fact and
seemed rather aloof about her situation and responsibilities. The
house was not tidy and he realized something was not right. After
a few days, the reason for the maid’s neglect of
her
contractual obligations became apparent. One of
his two workmates informed him that she would be
moving into the house and his room.
“You bastard!” the boss yelled. “We all
agreed not to touch the maid.”
“I know,” the culprit replied, “but she’s so
lovely and she really likes me.”
That did it. She was sacked immediately
with a generous severance pay. Her wouldbe boyfriend was not happy about it and the
atmosphere in the house was tense for some
time to come. They hired a new maid; this
time she was old, surly and unattractive,
but a good cook and very efficient.
One of the first business principles
to learn is not to mix business with
pleasure, especially when it involves
your staff.
How many office
romances succeed as opposed to
those that cause problems in the
workplace? How many times does
‘sleeping with the boss’ actually
move someone up the corporate
ladder? It is about human nature
and certainly not peculiar
to Thailand. In places like
Pattaya it is amplified by the
nature of the bar business
but listening to people
around town it seems to
be the first rule many
businessmen abandon.
Many bar owners can
relate tales of a man
losing sight of the
golden rule.
A guy bought
into a Go Go Bar. He was
a single man and, in a moment
of weakness, he succumbed to the
charms of one of the dancing maidens.
Afterwards, he must have realized he had
made a mistake because it was only the one time
and he attempted to forget the incident.Months later, he
met the woman of his dreams and they moved in together
70

with his companion taking over the job of mamasan at the Go Go
Bar. Details are sketchy but it is likely that within minutes of her
entering the bar, his girlfriend was informed of his previous liaison.
And she was not happy. It is probable that the girl in question let her
know or it could have been any one of the other staff. It is also likely
that the girl had been using her tryst with the boss to gain stature
among the other girls. Two things are certain: he did not know all
the machinations within his staff and, while his ex-playmate was
around, she was a constant reminder to his girlfriend of his ‘past’.
The girl represented a loss of face for his lady. Whenever he sat
in his bar – as bar owners are obliged to do – he had to sit with his
back to the stage. If his girlfriend caught him looking at the dancers
and ‘that girl’ was one of them, he would receive a clip around the
ears. It took his girlfriend only a few months to find a legitimate
excuse to sack the girl but that’s exactly what happened. He was
confused because his indiscretion occurred well before he even met
his current girlfriend and had never been repeated. The girl was
a good worker and very popular with customers but he was smart
enough not to countermand the order of his girlfriend.
Meanwhile in a Beer Bar across town, the Thai owner
thought he had it made. He and his wife lived in
Bangkok where she ran a thriving restaurant.
He would drive down to Pattaya every
Monday, bank the weekend
takings, stay the night and
return to Bangkok on
Tuesday. Of course,
he would not spend
the night alone, each
time choosing one of the
three best looking girls
in his employ to keep him
company.One Monday he
arrived at his bar to find
out his wife had been there
earlier and sacked the three best
looking girls, replacing them
with three more homely types.
He drove straight back to Bangkok
to confront his wife at their
restaurant. She was in the kitchen
at the time; holding a meat cleaver.
This was not his smartest idea. To his
dismay, he learned that someone from
a nearby Beer Bar had called his wife to
tell her about his dalliances. He ran from
the restaurant and arrived home to find
all his clothing on the floor in the lounge
room. He understood the message that
this was where he would be sleeping for the
foreseeable future. He was never allowed to
return to Pattaya, but at least his male genitalia
was still intact.
In Thailand, the sheer number of beautiful
ladies magnifies the danger. In Pattaya, the
problem reaches cosmic proportions where, in the
business of running a bar, restraint is often difficult
due to the constant temptation literally at your
fingertips. Not only bar owners but all men involved
in a business whether single or attached should note
the moment you overstep the employer-employee
boundary, you are asking for trouble
