Walk the Plank

Our Ronald McDonald House in the Medical Center got a big beautiful surprise with the arrival of
our brand new “Walk the Plank” pirate ship playscape. This 30” x 21” wonder is a child’s dream come
true complete with slides, an observation deck, nautical portholes, a bow climber, drum cannon, sunken
treasure hunt panel, brig panel, and nautical flags! It is the first of its kind and we are beyond thrilled
to have it! This delight was a gift from the H.E.B. Tournament of Champions and would not have been
possible without them. The hard working folks from H.E.B. as well as the sponsors not only provided the
funds for our new ship, but also came to the Ronald McDonald House and put it together. This was not
an easy task considering we are in south Texas and it is HOT! The families watched in amazement as the
volunteers sweated and shoveled and constructed their hearts out until our ship was sea worthy. Since
then, each and every person who sees it for the first time has the same reaction-WOW that’s incredible! We
would like to thank H.E.B. and all of their hard working employees, all of the Tournament of Champions
sponsors, with a special thanks to Steve Kohring and Unilever for their generosity. It will thrill and delight
children and their families for years to come.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I am pleased to update you on the Board of Directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities. We
have had a very exciting start to our Board year for 2011 – 2012. We added eight new members to the
Board this year, for a total membership of twenty-six Directors. This group is diverse, coming from
different backgrounds, experiences, and careers, but all dedicated to the mission of RMHC – it’s all
about the kids and their families. We are very fortunate to have the support of these Board members.
The purpose of the Board of Directors is to fully support the mission of the RMHC by providing guidance, support, and oversight of the charity and its executive management. The Board
actively participates in fulfilling this mission by contributing their time, talent, and resources. In
addition to being financial stewards of the Charity, the Board contributes by providing advice,
oversight, and hands on support at board meetings, committee meetings, and volunteer activities.
The first volunteer event for the Board was reviewing local student applications for scholarships, which are awarded annually. This is always a rewarding activity for board members
and other volunteers. The students’ essays demonstrate their desire to attend college and also
show how young people are dedicated to giving back to their communities. Board members
also attended the events in San Antonio and Laredo at which the scholarships were presented.
The second event this year was a lot of hard work for both Board members and staff, but also
a lot of fun. H.E.B. selected RMHC, and particularly the Medical Center house, to be one of
the beneficiaries of its Tournament of Champions volunteer day. H.E.B. and H.E.B. vendors
contributed to purchase a giant Pirate Ship play structure, and H.E.B and vendor employees,
and Board members, and RMHC staff all cooperated to construct the Pirate Ship in four hours
(normally it would take three days). We looked like a lot of ants swarming over the backyard
of the Medical Center house. It was hot, sweaty work, but the spirit of cooperation and passion to complete the ship on time was worth all of the work. What made it real special for
everyone were the smiles on our kids’ faces when they came out and saw the completed ship.
There are lots of ways to contribute to the RMHC and the children and families that the Charity
serves. Board service is just one of the ways to serve. There are countless volunteers and contributors that help the RMHC houses in San Antonio and the family rooms in Laredo, and we are
grateful to each one. We are always looking for Board members eager to help with our mission.

Share Your Heart is coming up faster than I realized.
For those of you not familiar with the program, Share
your Heart works with local schools to raise money during the month of Valentine’s Day to benefit the Ronald
McDonald Houses. The students and staff buy hearts for
a quarter each and display in the schools. As many of you
are aware, the monies raised in San Antonio, stays in San
Antonio. If you are willing to volunteer your time in February by taking a school or two and delivering hearts and
collecting money, please contact me. In addition, if you
have children of school age and their schools are not participants in the Share Your Heart Program, perhaps you
may be willing to talk to counselors and make them aware.

New Look

This May our Ronald McDonald House located on the campus of Christus Santa
Rosa Children’s Hospital got a much deserved face lift. The kind folks at Jordan
Ford redecorated all 11 bedrooms, spruced up the common areas, and even provided us with a washing machine! As they make their way off of the elevator,
the families are greeted by what the children have named the lollipop tree. This
life-sized jewel is filled with swirls of color, peaceful birds, and a mischievous
squirrel. The bedrooms are truly amazing. They are adorned with twinkling
light houses, bright beautiful flowers, adorable animals, and many other welcoming, home-like themes. This project has had an immediate and positive effect on
the quality of stay for the families who call us home. We would like to sincerely
thank the Jordan J.E.T. Team, Marc Cross, and Mike Trompeter for organizing
and executing this very generous project. There is a quote on the wall that the good people of Jordan Ford included in the décor which reads “ Life is
not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. “ Thank you all for taking our breath away!

FRIENDS OF RONALD MCDONALD
Another year has started for the 2011-2012 “Friends” board of Ronald McDonald house. Once
again we have members that are eager and excited about working for such a wonderful cause.
This year we again will be providing meals every Tuesday to either the
Sid Katz or the Lewis Street location. This is a great way to help out and for
those students needing community service hours it is a wonderful opportunity. In addition we provide fresh cookies to the families of the houses as well.
In December we decorated the houses for the holidays and brought a bit of light
heartedness to the homes. Immediately following that we will follow up with the kick
off of “Share Your Heart” during January and February. This campaign lets schools
raise money for the Ronald McDonald Houses by selling paper hearts a quarter at a
time. Last year we raised close to $12,000.00. All schools are welcome to participate.
Be sure to be on the lookout for our big Spring event. So mark your calendars for
March 23, 2012. This event will have a silent auction so if you would like to contribute
to the cause, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Again we are excited about this year
and all the wonderful opportunities we have to help the families in such difficult times.

The past few months have been busy as usual for us here in San Antonio. As always, it is our
distinct honor and privilege to serve children and their families in their time of need. Every
minute of every day brings a new set of challenges, surprises, and opportunities to better the
lives, if even for a short time, of these little heroes. We are able to do this because of all of
you.
Though donations are down, we have had some very generous donors who have been very
kind to us. Through the generosity of some of our longtime friends, who would prefer to
remain anonymous, we were able to get new computers at all three of our Houses! This has
made our lives much easier through the wonder of up to date technology. Our House on Lewis
St. was visited by our own personal guardian angel and longtime volunteer, Julian Aronson,
who made some much needed updates to our kitchens. Our Lewis St. House also got some
new playground equipment which the children have spent the summer enjoying. Our Medical Center location acquired a large pirate ship playscape thanks to the H.E.B. Tournament of
Champions. Also, wrestler, Shawn Michaels, donated funds for us to get a Sun Shade, three
Spring Riders, and an activity center! And let’s not forget our Santa Rosa House. Jordan Ford
absolutely blew us away by redecorating the entire House! What wonderful, selfless, generous
friends we have! This August, five of our staff members attended the International Conference in Chicago. This was a great way to meet and network with our fellow Ronald McDonald
House Charity staff and Board members who were eager to share ideas about how to better
serve our guest families and who also share our passion for helping families of ill children.
The classes were very informative and we all came home with new and exciting ways to improve our job performance and make the guest families as comfortable as possible during their
stay with us. It was also a wonderful opportunity for team-building and bonding amongst the
staff.
So friends, I will leave you with this thought, for the past 26 years we have laughed and
cried, congratulated and consoled, hoped and prayed, learned and taught and through it all, you
have been there. There for us, helping us fulfill our mission of serving critically ill and injured
children and their families. We want you to know just how much your gifts of time, talents,
and resources mean to us. Thank you all for everything.

Over the past 26 years our San Antonio Ronald McDonald Houses have seen their share of “uh- ohs”.
With three houses and two Family Rooms it’s fair to say we’ve seen it all. There have been shattered
windows, over-flowing toilets, crayon murals on our walls, broken pipes, blown-out tires, temperamental
washing machines, stubborn faucets, and a host of other things that keep life interesting around here.
So what do we do when life’s little accidents happen? In the past we have reached for the closest Yellow Pages, but now we have Tony. This May we welcomed our new Facilities Manager, Tony Avila, to
our Ronald McDonald House family and we couldn’t be happier. Since he came on board, life’s little
accidents don’t seem so bad. His many and varied skills come in quite handy and help us to provide a
safe and comfortable home-away-from-home to the wonderful families we serve. Thank you Tony and
welcome to the family!
