DISCOVER A PROJECT
THAT CELEBRATES
OUR DISTRICT IN
140 CHARACTERS
Welcome to
Wake up your walls
Give them a floral makeover. Our cover
wallpaper is the Japanese-inspired
Geo Floral in sprout green and, on this
page, we have Stitch Leaf with a pattern
of pink and grey hibiscus leaves. Both cost
£15 a roll from Habitat (E7) who also
supplied the furniture and accessories.
At long last, it’s goodbye to winter. In Fitzrovia’s garden squares,
the buds are bursting on the trees, flowers are blooming and the
birds are showing off their vocal virtuosity. As for us, it’s time to
take a hint from nature, get out and about and enjoy the best that
this great London district has to offer.
Fancy feathering your own nest and need a little something for the home? Sensing love
in the air and looking for a romantic restaurant? Or just eager for a change? As you’ll
see, shopping and eating are what Fitzrovia does best. So, please, get with the season
and enjoy Fitzrovia!

Fly on the wall
Add a little avian interest to your living room
with these chirpy little wall decorations in
pure white dolomite. This set of two
Bird Wall Decorations costs £29
from BoConcept (C6).
A bit on the side

modernism but the Mesa side table is
surprisingly lightweight on its delicate feet.
It costs £169 from West Elm (F7).

Pot luck!
Sometimes,
a spring clean
is not enough
This cheerful ceramic planter is a great little find.
With colourful glazed stripes on a plain unglazed
surface, Montana comes with its own integral
stand and costs £18 from Habitat (E7).
It’s perfectly natural. If we feel like giving our
nests a makeover, we’re only doing what your
average bird does at this time of year.
Teak chic
So, whether you’re an eager nester, a budding designer
or just want to freshen up the decor, Tottenham Court Road
is the place to start.
This hand-carved solid teak bowl looks

summer or to give your interior decor a rustic
look. It costs £45 from Lombok (E7).
Floating your boat?

different statement) plus one blank for your own words. Each box
costs £65 each from Heal’s (E7).
Just add flowers

to perfect smoothness by the sea, the flat
Pebble Vase is £35 from Multiyork (D6).

of the Versailles bedstead hail straight
from the court of Louis XV. Made from
weathered oak and with a solid rattancaned headboard, it costs £1,249 from
Feather & Black (D6).
Sitting pretty
Like something from the foyer of a boutique
hotel, the Atlas adds a touch of contemporary
chic to any home. Available in a wide range of
colours (this is Lime), it costs £879 from
Multiyork (D6).
Lie back and think of
nothing
They call it the world’s first performance
recliner, a seat that moves with you to offer
perfect comfort and relaxation. Available in
a variety of sizes and styles, this is the

Natuzzi Italia (D6).
Sweets for your suite

classic from American designer, George

enough to eat. £4,192 from Heal’s (E7).

It’s London’s hottest foodie
destination and the menu’s
changing all the time.
Charlotte Street is home to a wider range of
eating places than anywhere else in London and,
if you add in the surrounding streets, the choice
is virtually endless.
The Wild Game Co. classic Venison burger
The core of the culinary offering may come from long-established
favourites but there are always new kids on the block bringing their
own fresh ideas to the table.
On the following pages, we’re profiling just four of them – one
Scottish, one Spanish, one Hawaiian and one Vietnamese – and that
gives you a pretty good idea of the sheer variety of choice you can
expect when eating in Fitzrovia.
There’s something for pretty much every budget too. You can have
it Michelin-starred if the occasion demands, but if you want a simple
lunch, a quick pizza or a coffee and a sandwich, that’s on offer here as
well. And, if all you fancy is a drink, you can always slake your thirst in
a multitude of local pubs and bars.
Taste buds at the ready for this annual celebration of
everything culinary in Fitzrovia! Events start in July, so
keep checking at enjoyfitzrovia.co.uk to find out what’s
on the menu.

On the rocks
We said ‘aloha’ to one of the proprietors of the Kua ’Aina restaurant Ed Bardos in Goodge Street and
discovered the secret that gives their food that distinctive Hawaiian flavour.
So how do we pronounce the name and what does it mean?
It’s pronounced ‘Koo-a-EYE-na’ and it’s Hawaiian for ‘country bumpkin’.
Who’s behind the restaurant and where did you get your
inspiration?
My best mate Paul and I were in Hawaii and just loved the Kua ’Aina
grilled sandwiches and burgers. There was nothing like them, or as
tasty, in the UK, so we persuaded the owner Terry, who still runs three
restaurants there, to train us, give us his recipes and let us use the
name. Then we gave up our City jobs and started Kua ’Aina as a
unique, independent addition to London’s fast/casual restaurant scene.
What Hawaiian specialities are on the menu?
We chargrill almost everything over lava rocks which is what gives our
sandwiches, burgers & salads that special taste – along with our
original and secret seasonings, all homemade from scratch. The
cuisine is not Hawaiian as such but we import a great selection of
craft beers from Kona Brewing Company and aim to serve everyone
with the warmth and Aloha spirit you get in Hawaii.
Anything interesting coming up?
We have rotating monthly specials and love to run ‘surprise’ offers, so
stay tuned @KuaAinaUK (or on Facebook). And look out for our food
truck at festivals/events near you. kua-aina.co.uk/on-tour

Why did you choose Fitzrovia?
We had our eye on it for a while. It’s such a vibrant area with a great
‘village’ feel and changing rapidly. We thought our fast/casual food
and price point would fit in very well.
What are your favourite local places to eat, drink and shop?
So many to choose from! On the rare occasion we escape from our
own restaurant, we love the Bulletproof coffee at BlackSheep and a
quick lunch ramen in the basement of Roka. No time for shopping!
Describe Fitzrovia in three words
Thriving, quirky, fast-changing.

Ed Bardos
Bang, Bang,
you’re fed!
Vietnamese chefs and restaurateurs, David Le and
Jimmy Yeung, owners of Bang Bang Vietnamese
Canteen, introduced us to the story behind their
‘FiIm Noir Noodle Bar’ in Warren Street.
What exactly is the Bang Bang concept?
The restaurant is at the centre of a multi-platform back story. The first
part of a hard-boiled Film Noir narrative, involving mobsters, double
crosses and a few signature Vietnamese dishes, is told on one wall of
the restaurant and in fragments across the menus and napkins, with
additional scenes, clues and new plot developments to be revealed on
social media. The menu introduces the story and characters and the
restaurant itself features in several key scenes. The inspiration comes
from theatre company Punch Drunk’s work, as well as 1940s Film Noir.
And what about the food?
There’s a menu of amazing Vietnamese street food The overriding
theme is real Vietnamese flavours, presented with a cool inner city
edge, selected from recipes passed down through David and Jimmy’s
family and encounters on their travels. With an amazing wine list from
trendy independent wine merchants, Vagabond.
What makes Vietnamese cuisine stand out from other
Asian cuisines?
It fits with current health-conscious trends, and has fresh, punchy,
banging flavours. As Vietnam is becoming more popular as a
destination for travellers, more and more people are aware of the
cuisine and its amazing tastes.
What specialities should we try?
Our Bang Bang Baos, steamed buns with pork belly and bang spicy
wings, are a firm favourite. And, of course, our 18-hour Pho broth is
synonymous with Vietnamese cuisine and with Bang Bang, since it’s a
recipe that’s been passed down through the Le Family.
Why did you choose Fitzrovia?
With its diverse mix of cool people and businesses, it’s the perfect
area to showcase what we have on offer.
What are your favourite local places to eat, drink and shop?
Honey and Co on Warren Street does amazing food and is a favourite.

Tapas but not
as you know it
Nigel Howell and Tim Luther explain how a
passion for perfection has created Drakes
Tabanco, one of the best places to enjoy Spanish
food outside Spain, in Windmill Street.
What’s the story behind the business?
Tim worked in the wine industry for seven years selling predominantly
Spanish wines before going into business with Nigel. After many visits
to the Bodegas of Jerez and Sanlucar in Andalucia, it was clear what
sort of place he was going to open.
Tell us about tapas.
The word tapa literally means lid and what we now call tapas is said to
have been created in Andalucia. A lid was put over a customer’s drink
to keep out the flies. In time, a slice of jamon or a piece of bread with
a small morsel on top replaced the lid and doubled as a snack. Now
tapas means pretty much anything on a small plate and it’s no longer
just Spanish!
So what can we expect on your menu?
Not your average tapas fare. We have stayed away from the usual
comfort food of patatas bravas etc. to offer a more fulfilling culinary
experience. Think smoked scallop, garlic purée & beetroot, octopus
with chickpea & chorizo, deep fried cauliflower, Manchego & pine nut
salad, lamb carpaccio, rosemary yoghurt & brown garlic or braised pig
cheeks with Oloroso. Classic ingredients with an inventive twist.
You’re passionate about sherry aren’t you?
We believe we’re the only place outside Spain that serves ‘en Rama’
sherry from the barrel. None of our sherries have gone through
industrial filtering or stabilisation. The result is a more rewarding,
complex and tasty wine. Our sherries are from the outstanding
Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla. Think the equivalent of 1st growth
Bordeaux. Sherry is the best wine in the world for pairing with food.
Just try one of our two sherry flights served with tapitas in our bar!
Why did you choose Fitzrovia?
The creative bunch who live and work here appreciate good food and
service and we want to exceed their expectations with a unique
setting and experience.
Do you have any favourite local places to eat and drink?
There are so many great places, from casual to fine dining. The quality
has been going up and up and we are delighted to be a part of it.

Creative, savvy, community.

If you find yourself hankering for a taste of the highlands in the
heart of London, just head for the Wild Game Co. on Charlotte
Street. We talked to the people behind it to find out more.
Game on!
Who are the Wild Game team?
Head Chef: Mikkel Greggersen Toftgaard; Sous Chef: Jonathon Cox;
CDP: Rob Malone. Directors: Andy Waugh & Calum Mackinnon; GM:
Adam Pinder; and Assistant Manager: Samia Jessie Ahmed.
Tell us about the history of the Wild Game Co.
Andy comes from a family of game butchers in the Highlands. He grew
up fishing, shooting and helping in the family business – Ardgay Game
– where all of our meat comes from. We started in 2010 as a butcher
stall on Broadway Market, then moved into street food and pop-up
restaurants before opening full time in Charlotte Street in October
2014.
Does the decor reflect the food you serve?
We’ve chosen a very rustic and informal look. Long wooden tables,
wooden floorboards, a meat rail and a couple of deer skins to warm
the place up.
Why did you choose Fitzrovia?
Charlotte Street is one of the best foodie destinations in London, and
the people here are the people we want to cook for. We’ve also been
pleasantly surprised at the sense of community and how welcoming
everyone has been.
Do you have any favourite local places to eat and drink?
You can’t beat a cheeky Bubbledogs hot dog. Then it’s off to see
Jamie and Jim and Rev. JW for incredible cocktails.
Describe Fitzrovia in three words
West End, foodie, heaven
OK, four then.
wildgameco.co.uk
And what can we expect on the menu?
Venison straight from the highlands, burgers, steaks, and seasonal
sides.
Is there anything for vegetarians?
Yes. We’re currently really excited about a Vegan Chateaubriand that
is in the works, and a couple of new veggie dishes are on their way this
spring.
Anything special happening soon?
We have a whisky night coming up: four courses with matching whiskies.

Aristos Papasavva and Christopher Jordan
Fish and
chips
and Greek
No district would be complete without its own great
fish and chip shop, but Fitzrovia goes one better
with an excellent ‘chippy’ in Tottenham Street that
also serves superlative Greek cuisine.
Who are the team behind Gigs?
Aristos Papasavva and Christopher Jordan.
Tell us a little of the history
Gigs was opened in 1958 by a Cypriot émigré called Gyriaokos (‘Gigs’
to his friends). He was training to be a priest at the time and went on to
serve at the main Greek Orthodox church in Pratt Street, Camden, but
still ran the business. In the mid-60s, he had the idea of introducing fish
and chips to complement the traditional Greek Cypriot cuisine. It was
probably the first time it had ever been done but it worked.
And has very much changed?
Since we took over in 2006, we have kept true to the original menu
with a few tweaks. We also renovated the premises in 2010 to bring
them into the 21st century.
So what can we expect on today’s menu?
Our fish is from sustainable sources and delivered fresh from
Billingsgate every day. The fish and chips are fried in high quality
ground nut oil (not cheap vegetable oil) and the souvlaki (kebab) is
cooked in the traditional way over real wood charcoal, to give that
distinctive flavour.
Greek cuisine is healthy and Mediterranean with a hint of the middle
east. Fresh grilled meats and fish (sea bass and bream), healthy salads
and regional dips such as taramasalata, hummus and tzatziki. Plus
Cypriot dishes – halloumi, loukanico, pastirma and calamari. Specials
include kleftico and sheftalia and, on the British side, salmon and tuna.
Is there anything for vegetarians?
Yes, we do really healthy Greek salads, vegetable kebabs and grilled
halloumi platters which are very tasty!
What’s coming up over the next few months?
More of the same! We continually refresh our specials and introduce
seasonal fish throughout the year. As soon as summer arrives, we love
opening up our concertina windows and doors and bringing a real al
fresco dining feel to Fitzrovia.
Why are you still in Fitzrovia?
We love the village feel, the creative atmosphere and the friendly spirit.
And what are your favourite local places?
The Hope for its traditional ales, Montello’s in Goodge Street for the
fantastic marinara and we love shopping in the independent furniture
and electrical shops in Tottenham Court Road.

such as T.S. Eliot and George Orwell, met, drank, argued and wrote.
The walks start with a quick literary pub quiz in the Fitzroy Tavern, then

Faces
on the
Street
We may live in an increasingly digital
world, but it’s the real people behind
the tweets who bring a place to life.
As a celebration of the fascinatingly diverse characters who give
Fitzrovia its unique flavour, this project will exhibit photographs of
up to 140 people who live and work locally. You’ll be able to see
them exhibited this Spring, for further details please email
fitzrovianoir@gmail.com. The 12 that most capture the public
imagination, as voted for by visitors, will then be transformed into
semi-permanent street paintings by artists working with pupils from
All Souls Primary School.
Photographs are by Doralba Picerno and the project is curated
by Fitzrovia Noir and funded by Derwent London and supported by
The Fitzrovia Partnership.
