Announcing that RCCSS has joined the National LIFE Runners Team! LIFE Runners is the
world's largest Pro-Life Running/Walking Team. Members pray, fundraise, and run/walk as a
Team until they Cross the finish line that ends abortion. The most important thing the RCCSS
Team can do is to remember the unborn through prayer and sharing the message. So at
7:31am on the first Wednesday of every month we will meet at STM for prayer, and then in
our LIFE Runners apparel, we will share the message by going for a 20-minute walk.
Please consider joining the team! If you prefer not to walk, please come for prayer and then
wear your shirt as you go about the rest of the day. To register and buy apparel, visit
liferunners.org. There are two Rapid City chapters. We are the RCCSS chapter, but all LIFE
Runners are invited to participate in all events

From the Superintendent’s Desk
Dear Parents,
National Catholic Schools Week is such a beautiful celebration. It was
wonderful to see so many of you at our all system Mass and have the
opportunity to pray together. Our Catholic school community is a very special
group of people, and God has blessed us in so many ways. Thank you for your
commitment to Catholic education and for all you do for our students, faculty,
and staff.
It is with great anticipation that we begin the registration process for our
2014-15 school year. Current families are asked to register their returning
students beginning Monday, February 3rd. As you know, we have moved to
online registration, and we hope you will find this to be convenient. Packets are
available in the main offices if you prefer to complete one by hand. Please take
the time to register your students as soon as possible, as we will be enrolling
new families beginning February 18th. With the increase in enrollment we have experienced this year, we want to make
sure all of our returning students are registered in a timely manner. We do anticipate some classes filling for the next
year, with the possibility of waiting lists being established. Timely enrollment also helps us as we plan staffing for the
upcoming year.
Changes to Tuition Assistance Policy
I am pleased to inform you that the amount of tuition assistance budgeted for the 2014-15 school year is $160,000,
which reflects an increase of $40,000. Strong enrollment, major gifts and endowment funds have helped make
this possible, and we are happy to be able to share our blessings with you by making more assistance available.
It is important to note this change in policy: THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE ROUND OF ASSISTANCE
AWARDED THIS YEAR AND THAT AWARD WILL BE BASED ON THE PERCENTAGE OF NEED
CALCULATED BY TUITION AID DATA SERVICES (TADS). There will be NO follow-up round as in the past.
TADS is a third party vendor used by the school to remove the judgment of school officials from the award process and
to maintain confidentiality of the financial information provided by families. The application deadline is April 30th.
Please be advised that it can take several weeks for the TADS application to make it through the audit process. After
your initial submission, TADS will notify you of any additional documentation required to complete the process. Policy
states an April 30th deadline, but we recommend all applications to TADS be submitted by March 31st in order to meet
our required deadline of April 30th. Applications must receive a good or fair status with TADS to be considered for
assistance.
Please call the RCCSS Business Office if you have any questions at all regarding tuition assistance.
In Christ,
Barb Honeycutt, Superintendent

Developing Healthy Self-Esteem
The MS

with us:
Have you attached an
email address to your
Edline account? This
is an easy way to
ensure you get all the
notices you need!
During the 2nd semester, we have an important part of the middle school curriculum that focuses on
developing healthy self-esteem through our virtue formation programs. At this age, your child is
experiencing an emerging self-identity, and they are establishing their image and peer group.
Although they are developing abstract thinking, they still tend to generalize, want detailed
explanation on why they should do something, and rely on social media and peers in their decision
making process. Due to the negative effects of our current social environment, it is even more
important that we take an active role in shaping a student’s moral values and developing strong
character that flows within the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Each grade level program is specifically designed for the appropriate developmental stage of the
student and encourages parental involvement. Information about each program, parent discussion
guides and supplemental resources will be distributed during parent/teacher conferences on
Monday, February 3rd or can be picked up in the middle school office. Religion teachers will be
sending information home or posting their curriculum on Edline when the programs begin.
The 6th grade curriculum is a continuation of the RCL Benzinger Family Life Series that started in
the 3rd grade at St. Elizabeth Seton. Human Reproduction (Level A) would have been covered in
5th grade dealing with the male and female reproduction systems and continues with pregnancy and
childbirth (Level B) in 6th grade. If you are new to our system, there are wonderful parent resources
on these topics at www.rclbfamilylife.com, username: flfamily, password: flrclbf01. The 7th grade
(and 10th grade) curriculum uses Theology of the Body curriculum by Ascension Press, which
covers the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual benefits to saving sex for marriage.
Classes will be taught in gender separate lessons with Brigit Decker from our Diocese office
teaching the girls and Andy Hiipakka teaching the boys. These classes also incorporate medical
guest speakers from our Catholic family. The 8th grade curriculum is a series of lectures with
community guest speakers that deal with social media, pornography, sexting, depression and
suicide, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and dating and domestic violence. Other topics in
the curriculum include moral decision making, characteristics of healthy relationships, and the
celebration of God’s mercy and love.
The Catholic Church recognizes you as the primary and best source of information and inspiration
for your child as they grow and develop. Christian sexuality concerns the way a person expresses
him/herself through love, friendship and community with others as part of growing closer to God’s
plan and vision for us. Having discussions with your child about the moral values inherent with
Catholic teaching on love, sexual intimacy, and the beauty of the human person in the light of faith
can be difficult. We ask you to take an active role in being familiar with the curriculum so that you
can have wonderful discussions with your child that reflect your belief system. This will help in the
formation of your child’s self-esteem and establish a respect for who God wants them to be. If you
have specific questions regarding this curriculum, please contact me or Father Marcin.
Keiz M. Shultz
Sullivan’s Corner
DO YOU KNOW?
Have you ever had a kid
take the wind out of your
sails by not showing a lot
of remorse or concern
when you deliver a consequence? Has that ever
made you really want to
"drop the hammer"?
It happens to the best of
us. When most people
get off track, it is because
they've lost sight of the
real goal (respectful, responsible kids) and focused on a lesser goal
(winning). We've all been
there.
For me, the best results
with consequences seem
to happen when the focus is solving a problem
— versus causing massive discomfort for the
kid. Sometimes, those
two things intersect, but
do not (repeat) DO NOT
panic when a kid actually
enjoys fixing the problem.
Many kids have enjoyed
repairing damage or
making some other form
of restitution. This does
not mean the kid
'won' (and you lost). It
means we feel good
about ourselves when we
work to solve problems.
This is where some logic
comes in. Avoid asking:
'Did the kid suffer
enough?'
Ask instead: "Was the
problem solved? Was the
damage paid for or repaired? Was the person's
time or energy made up?
Did the kid make it right?"
Or: "Do I have a wise
friend who might help me
find more logical restitution than lifetime grounding?"
Dear STM Families,

sometimes come up. I would like address that in this newsletter. STM offers the

At St. Thomas More, we encourage all students to participate in activities that will help them be leaders, competitors, and socially active
in their school. We have a “NO” cut policy in all of our activities. After reading this article, if you have any further questions I invite you to
set up a time with me and I will personally answer any questions you may have.
Most Academic activities such as travel to Chadron Academic Contest, Essay Contests are covered by the school. The “We the People”
contest which is held in Pierre every year, the parents provide transportation to the event. This year they won the State competition and
now travel to Washington DC for the National Competition. This event will need to be funraised to send the team to compete at the the
next level.
All of the extra-curricular activities must fundraise in order to operate. The 2014-2015 budget for the first time includes coaching salaries
which had to be fundraised in the past. The activities are still mandated to raise the funds to support their programs. When you buy the
punch cards to attend home games, that money is split among the activities that charge to attend. The money collected at the gate is
also revenue for the sport that is hosting the home game. Some activities have incorporated a “travel fee” to help offset the transportation. Other sports such as a soccer have to pay a fee to use the public soccer fields. If a sport makes it to the post season and eventually
to the State Championship games, there is an added cost and the activity will either incorporate a fee or have to fundraise to pay for the
trip.
This February will kickoff our registration for the next school year. We are registering online and you may start after February 3rd to register your students for the next school year. This is new, so if you have any questions please let us know.
St. Thomas More families, there are many ways that we as a school can earn money without having fundraisers! I will list a few items
that can earn money for our school that I am sure you are doing and do not even realize the potential of income for our school. They are:
Family Thrift receipts- for every $150,000 dollars of receipts our school receives $1,000.
Every top of “Land of Lakes Milk” is worth - $.05
Every “Our Family” upc code is worth - $.05
Every “Box Top for Education” is worth - $.10
If you simply send in these items we will have groups such as “Student Council” and “National Honor Society” at our school add them up
and then we collect the monies for our school. It is that easy! I appreciate your support.
“It’s easy when you know how”
Have a wonderful month and may God Bless you and your family.
These questions can put
us in a better mindset to
God Bless, Mr. Sullivan
respond with more empathy and less wrath

French students celebrated Epiphany with the traditional French "galette des rois," or Kings Cake. A small
figurine is hidden in each cake and the person who finds it in his or her piece of cake is crowned king or queen
for the day. In France these special cakes show up in all of the bakeries for Epiphany and the tradition is to
continue to buy and eat the cakes throughout the month of January.
Febrrrrrruary Fine Arts News
We are off and running with 2nd semester! So much to do – so little time! We have
already attended the South Dakota Jazz Festival at Northern State University in Aberdeen.
Excellent workshops for our students and an amazing evening concert made it a very
educational and rewarding day for our jazz singers and instrumentalists. We are getting
ready for Region 8 Solo and Ensemble contest taking place on February 12 at the Civic
Center in Rapid City. We are taking soloists, duets, ensembles and more. Parents are
welcome to attend this day of great music making by our students and many more from the
Black Hills Region 8 area.
In addition, our cast and crew of the One Act Play has been rehearsing since before
Christmas. Under the direction of Susan Oleson, we take “Kaleidoscope” by Ray
Bradbury to Regionals on Wednesday, January 29 th in Hill City. They gave an excellent
performance for family and friends here at the STM MS gym on Saturday, January 25 th.
Go Cavs!
Congratulations to Megan Stone and Josiah Hanson, who auditioned and made it into the
South Dakota Junior Honors Choir! They have been working on music for this event since
before Christmas as well, and spent a day and a half with top 7 th through 9th grade singers
from all over the state, finishing with a fantastic concert here in Rapid City at the
Performing Arts Center downtown. Beautiful music! Talented singers!

Six senior art students worked on a group project for their first
semester final. Each student painted a 9" x 12" canvas
panel. When the panels were set side by side the complete
painting was a replica of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry
Night. Modeling paste was used to create the rich texture on the
panels first. Then, they were painted with acrylic paint. This
project is on

The MS Robotics Afterschool Team & MS Robotics class both
traveled to Sioux Falls January 17th to compete at the State FLL
Robotics Competition. The team’s registration, travel, and lodging
expenses were covered by Caterpillar. Robotics is a Middle School
enrichment course for 6th—8th graders. Mr. Tom Merkwan is the
instructor. The Afterschool team
took home the Lego trophy for
“Mechanical Design”.
Here is what Katherine Achbach
had to say about the class:
“Throughout robotics class this
MS Robotics Class: Patrick Kellar, Ryan Eilers, Mr. Merkwan,
year, I learned new things and
Katherine Achbach, Jacob Fisher, Liam Maguire, Frank
strengthened my knowledge on
Veldhuisen
what I already know.
During the semester I was put in charge of making the team’s presentation. The topic was
blizzards. I gathered all my information and then started on the power points.
Before working on my presentation, I was introduced to the programming of Lego Mindstrom
robots. ...I was introduced to the basics such as going straight and turning. I also worked a little
with the building of the robots. It was a very good exercise to following directions.”
The teams worked together to solve a problem based on the theme “Nature’s Fury”. The
Afterschool team built an earthquake proof building and were judged on many criteria. All the
students enjoyed the weekend competition.
