CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
December, 2013
On December 1, we will formally welcome Mother Bridget
Tierney as the third Director of Advent House. Bridget has
served in several parishes and as a Hospital Chaplain in the Chicago area,
and recently moved to New Orleans
in order to be closer to her daughter, a
teacher at St Martin’s School, and her
grandchildren (sound familiar!) She
has a very rich background in spiritual formation and will be
a regular preacher and celebrant at both weekday and Sunday
masses.
As we prepare to present our pledge cards at the Altar on the
first Sunday in Advent (December 1) representing our financial commitment to the Church for the coming year, I also want to express my deepest
gratitude for the thousands of volunteered hours that make the ministry of this Cathedral Parish possible. This includes everyone who sits on a committee, serves in the
liturgy, counts money, irons linens, teaches children, weeds gardens, sorts merchandise,
hosts coffee hour, arranges flowers, delivers meals, visits shut ins, sings anthems, and
on and on and on. No one has a better vantage point than I to see the magnificent
breadth of labor that undergirds all that we do. If one looks at
the culture in which we live, volunteering is becoming more and
more uncommon, and this gift of your precious time is an inspiration to others to do the same.

A Stroke Doesn’t Have to Happen!
Did you Know…
• Stroke is the 4th leading cause of death in the US
• 4 out of 5 people who have suffered a stroke had no
apparent warning signs
• 80% of all strokes can be prevented
Protect your health by finding out your risk of having a
stroke by participating in the Life Line Screening that will
be at Christ Church Cathedral on Friday, December 6, 2013.
Through ultrasound we evaluate the carotid arteries for the
buildup of fatty plaque, which is the leading cause of stroke.
Help tHe CatHedral support:
literacy, children, quality of life, sense of community, outreach,
education and citizen engagement
We are trying to raise money to purchase
“Little Free Libraries”, signs, & stamps
If you would like to donate to this wonderful ministry please make
checks payable to Christ Church Cathedral with

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). Have you heard about it?
• 8 to 12 million people in the US have PAD, and
unfortunately only half know it
• Only 10% of persons with PAD have classic symptoms
• Risk factors include smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure
and high cholesterol
• PAD screenings are normally not part of a routine
physical.
Protect your health by finding out your risk of PAD by
registering for an ankle brachial index test. Christ Church
Cathedral will be hosting a Life Line Screening preventive
health event on Friday, December 6, 2013.

V
isitors to the Cathedral are often surprised
by our Coffee Hour. I’ve heard many a person
say they were going to go home and tell their
church about our hospitality. You can help us keep up our
reputation for great hospitality by volunteering to host
Coffee Hour one Sunday. Drinks are provided by the
church and volunteers provide their choice of food. Host
with a friend or two. If you have no time to shop and
prepare food, donations are always gladly accepted. For
additional information/volunteer, contact Kathy Boyd,
891-1360 or kboydaj@yahoo.com. Recent hosts:
Daughters of the King, Christ Church Vestry,
Pudney Pointer, Advent House, Les Bradfield,
Julio Figueroa, Travers Koerner, Frances Beverly,
Betty Foster
Many thanks to all!
The Sign Up sheet for the remainder of the year is posted
in Stuart Hall with open dates. Please sign up today.
Gentle Reminders
The street just in front of the cathedral steps is a
Drop Off Zone for passenger unloading on Sunday
mornings. Please do not park there.
Our choir and organist work very hard to prepare the
music offered during worship. Please respect their
ministry and do not visit with your neighbor
during their offerings. Many thanks.
Holy Baptism
is especially appropriate at the Easter
Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost, on All
Saints’ Day or the Sunday after All Saints’
Day, and on the Feast of the Baptism
of our Lord (the First Sunday after the
Epiphany). It is recommended that, as far
as possible, Baptisms be reserved for these
occasions or when a Bishop is present.
(BCP, page 312).
Our next opportunity for baptism is Sunday, January 12.
Please contact Canon Roberts for more information.
Altar Flower Donations
Thanks to all of you who
have donated flowers for
the Cathedral and Chapel
this year. The dates for the
Cathedral are almost filled,
some dates for the Chapel
are open. During Advent,
of course, we do not have
flowers on the altar. Please
watch for the 2014 sign-up
sheet around the first of the
year.

Advent Tradition - Creché or Nativity scene
Build your creché gradually during the season. Put out
the stable first and then populate the scene piece by piece.
Have all your figures, not just the Wise Men, journey to
the stable by going around
the room or the whole
house. Take some time
each day and sit with the
building scene. Imagine
the thoughts and feelings
of each participant. Let
the creché become a quiet
spot for prayer and reflection. If you don’t have a nativity
scene, go out and get one or make your own. It need not
be big and fancy although it can be. If your scene is boxed
up in the attic and has been there for years, it might be
time to dust it off and put it out.
Just remember the baby Jesus arrives on Christmas Eve
and the Wise Men on Epiphany, January 6th!
O God, You bless us, your faithful people, With all that we
have and all that we are. We humbly accept the challenge
to Share from our means rather than from our excess. We
resolve to be generous with our time, talent, and treasure,
giving in proportion to the gifts we have received. Help us,
we pray, to live each day in a grateful spirit of peace and
joy secure in the knowledge that we are striving to do your
will. Amen
Pledge cards will be presented to God during worship
