O u r W a y: Knowledge Sharing Cox Newspapers has been built on an unswerving dedication to quality in everything from our journalism to our selling relationships, advertising innovation, delivery accuracy and production standards. Quality always comes first, but we are also emphasizing an intensified spirit of cooperation – something we see in our organization today more than ever. We are sharing editorial content through CoxNet, our wide area network, and through cooperative efforts such as our Washington, D.C. election team approach. We are sharing skills through Cox Academy. And we are sharing resources among our printed entities and our Internet sites. No. 1 in News The success of Cox Television has been built on basics – highly watched entertainment shows combined with quality, well-run news operations. The local news teams at all our core stations are ranked number one in their markets. For example, WSB-TV in Atlanta, GA, is so strong that as many people watch its primary newscast as watch those of all the other stations in the market combined. Cox Television stations produce some of the highest-rated local news broadcasts in the nation. Employees: 3,200 Revenues: $708 million O u r F u t u r e: A Bigger Share Of Mind And Market Our goal is to have the most viewers, and if you have that, you have the most financial success. As we look ahead, Cox Television will be a group of large-share television stations having either one or two stations in markets that are foremost in the public’s mind – stations with outstanding local news and entertainment programming. We want to be the first stop when advertisers need to either brand themselves or promote sales. Moreover, we want to give viewers not only what they want, but also deliver it in a format that they can truly enjoy. O u r W a y: Combine And Conquer Clustering our operations – that is, owning more than one station in the same or an adjacent market – is our key strategy. Clustering not only provides operating efficiencies, it also lets us share program buying power, local news manpower and management assets. And that efficiency gives us an opportunity to serve more viewers by targeting additional demographic groups. That means more choices for our advertisers to reach exactly the right audience. In addition, our way is to run our organization in an entrepreneurial manner – from the bottom up. We encourage everyone to think innovatively and keep their eyes on long-term results. 9 COX RADIO, INC. Web Radio One of the most exciting initiatives in 2000 was the Get the Scoop Researching the local market is an absolute key to the Cox Radio strategy. Before any decisions are made regarding format or other station changes, development of CXRi, or Cox Radio Interactive. Through CXRi, information-rich web sites for Cox Radio’s stations leverage the Cox Radio network presence and serve as an extension of the local station. local station management does a thorough study of the station, the listening audience and local advertisers’ needs. This essential information lays the foundation for local market decision-making. O u r F u t u r e: Strong Presence In Strong Markets Cox Radio remains committed to a strategy of developing clusters of radio stations in markets with strong or above-average growth in advertising revenues. These markets continue to be primarily in the Sunbelt. Wherever we choose to operate, we intend to be a top player in that market. We are positioned to take full advantage of the industry consolidation underway to further our clustering initiative. Our solid reliance on research and operational excellence creates loyal listening audiences that can be delivered to our advertisers. And it’s being able to showcase advertisers’ products and services on stations that boast large, tightly focused audiences that allows Cox Radio to compete with not only newspapers and television, but all media. 10 Quality programming based on extensive market research is making Cox Radio a ratings leader in its markets. Employees: 2,200 Revenues: $369 million Howdy, Houston In 2000, Cox Radio moved into Houston, TX, the nation’s eighthranked radio market, by acquiring four stations. Following extensive research, the station with the lowest ratings among the four was changed to an O u r W a y: ‘80s-hits format. In its first full month, it moved to third in the market in the 25-54 age demographic. The other three stations are also performing well in this top market. Rely On The Home Team We will continue to manage our stations in the future – much as we have in the past – as local businesses with station managers who understand their individual markets. We will continue to get involved in local community affairs. Support local charity events. Sponsor local concerts. For Cox, radio is all about determining what the local listening audience wants and then flawlessly delivering just that. Follow up with the efforts of a highly trained sales team that consults as well as sells, and that’s the Cox Radio way to success. 11 MANHEIM AUCTIONS, INC. O u r F u t u r e: The Ultimate Remarketing Resource At Manheim Auctions, we see ourselves as the world’s premier remarketer of used cars, which today represents a market four times the size of the new car market. Adding 7,000 employees to the Manheim family, the acquisition of ADT has proven beneficial both in the professionalism of the employees we gained and in the quality of the services they bring to our brand name, including the industry’s benchmark “Used Car Market Report.” C A P I TA L I Z I N G O N NEW MARKET OPPORTUNITIES In its 103-year history, Cox Enterprises has always embraced new media and technology. From the first newspaper purchased by Gov. James M. Cox in 1898, the Dayton Daily News, through radio, television, cable and the Internet, Cox has been at the forefront. That century of experience has served us well during AutoTrader.com is a study in successful branding – leveraging the brand of the popular printed AutoTrader publication into a high-traffic Internet site. Today AutoTrader.com is an Internet vehicle site that in 2000 hit critical mass and became the market leader in online used auto classifieds. Visits to the site were up 55%, auto searches were up 157% and leads to customers were up 227%. Clearly, over the course of the year, our marketing promotions were reaching more serious car buyers and sellers. According to industry data, 32% of all used car online shoppers come to AutoTrader.com. And as more visitors have come, the average number of 14 pages per use has increased from 16 in 1999 to 25 in 2000. AutoTrader facilitates the sale between multiple parties, so unlike many dot.com ventures, we do not depend on a single source for revenues. Rather, we benefit from the selling activity of millions of vehicle buyers and sellers. AutoTrader.com is an example of the Cox financial and product strategy to see a market before it develops; then create a leadership position before there is a strong financial return; and finally, grow strong revenues from that leadership position that ultimately do create an attractive financial return. 2000 Highlights • Became the market leader in online auto sales in terms of having the most buyers interacting with the most sellers • Maintained listings of 1.5 million cars from more than 30,000 dealers and 200,000 private owners • At year-end 2000, averaged 4 million monthly visits and 15 million monthly searches • Hosted traffic four times larger than our closest competitor • Achieved record financial results, as total revenues increased 429% in 2000 the recent explosive growth of the Internet. While others have foundered, we have built viable Internet businesses on the same principles that have always guided us. Below are two examples of our success: AutoTrader.com, a joint venture, and Cox Interactive Media, a wholly owned subsidiary. Since its creation in 1997, Cox Interactive Media has been the Internet standard bearer for Cox Enterprises (one of the few traditional media companies to establish a completely independent entity for Internet development). In 2000, we completed the build-out of the CIM Cities Network, with operating sites in 22 major markets, representing 25% of the U.S. adult population, and earned the distinction of having the highest rated local city sites “on the planet,” as President Peter Winter is fond of saying. Revenue growth was also strong in 2000 — up 64% over 1999. Our continued success in a volatile business segment has been the result of support from Cox Enterprises and individual Cox companies, while at the same time being able to exercise an independent product and marketing point of view. We have begun to introduce our second-generation product, which allows customers to turn our site into a personal news and information marketplace. We know from research that personalized users come more frequently and stay longer, and we will continue to give them reasons to do both. A major objective in the coming year is to test the viability of expanding beyond the Cox footprint, without the benefit of traditional Cox media promotion, in the nation’s top 50 markets. The opening of our Los Angeles site represents our first step in that direction. 2000 Highlights • Reported significant total revenue growth, year over year, of 64% • Built our audience to 4.2 million unique users per month across the 22-major-market network • Launched a significant new city site in Los Angeles, which completes an important triangle with San Diego and Orange County where we already operate city sites • Achieved the status of the numberone-rated local city site network in the country • Built significant audience reach in half of our markets, enabling Cox Interactive Media to compete for local advertising dollars against traditional media 15 COX COMMUNICATIONS, LOCATIONS as of Humboldt County, CA March INC. 2001 Manhattan/Junction City, KS Salina, KS Wichita, KS Tulsa, OK Stillwater, OK Muskogee, OK McAlster, OK New England Cleveland, OH Bentonville, AR Fayetteville/Springdale, AR Northern Virginia Topeka, KS Dodge City/ Ft.
