The choice is easy. Trust the folks at Carr.
I
n The Berkshire Eagle’s readers’ poll, Carr Hardware is the only hardware store ever voted Best of
the Berkshires. Carr has enjoyed this distinction for
15 years in a row, in large part due to Carr’s devotion to unparalleled customer service and satisfaction. This cornerstone was established by founder Sam Carr in 1928; reinforced by Marshall Raser
and his brothers who purchased the business from
Mr. Carr in 1962, and it remains alive and well under the current management of Marshall and his
son, Bart.
With a loyal staff as its foundation, Carr happily
serves homeowners, contractors, government and
institutional customers in ways “big box stores”
can’t – with friendly, knowledgeable and experienced personal service. Those values are ingrained
in every Carr employee. They are the main focus of
training and day-to-day interaction with every customer. They also fuel the company’s expansion.
Carr Hardware stores span the length of Berkshire County from Pittsfield, Lee and Great Barrington to Carr Paint and Rental in North Adams.
Branching out to the Albany Area, Carr Hardware
in Watervliet, NY, became the most recent acquisition in October 2007.
Carr Hardware will be opening a new location
— a destination True Value concept store — in
early 2012. This will be a partnership with True
Value and Agway, will include a live nursery and
offer an expanded party and equipment rental line,
as well as a greatly expanded bird and pet section.
Carr offers name-brand, prime quality hardware, paint, tools, lawn and garden equipment,
plus electrical and plumbing supplies. In its store,
Just Ask Rental, Carr rents tools, power equipment
and event essentials like tents, bounce houses and
all sorts of party and amusement items. Details are
available on the Web at www.carrhardware.com.
No stranger to community service, Marshall
Raser is former director and treasurer of The Berkshire Chamber of Commerce and is a member of
the Rotary Club. He is also on the Pittsfield Economic Redevelopment Council (PERC). Bart Raser is
a board member of The Berkshire Chamber of
Commerce and Berkshire Bank. A former board
member of The Boys and Girls Club. Bart is a member of Rotary and serves as a corporator at The
Berkshire Museum and Down Town Inc.
Stop by a Carr Hardware location today to find
out why Carr remains The Best in the Berkshires.

Italian inspired regional cuisine
M
0ario and Julia Soldato began what
seemed like a bold venture for the early
1960s: opening a restaurant featuring
authentic Italian food in what had been
a mere corn field. But, with hard work
and a dream they grew more than just
a business; they grew a family, a reputation and eventually a true local landmark. Now, almost 5 decades later
Mario and Julia’s children (Kathy, Diane
& Mickey) have kept the family business
and vision alive by offering amazing
food, comfortable atmosphere and
friendly service with the same passion
and commitment to quality that their
parents began in 1964. Executive
Chef Mickey Soldato, who continued
his life long family culinary teachings
with study at the CIA, creates seasonally
flavored menus of Italian inspired regional cuisine using the freshest and
highest quality local grown and purchased ingredients. From his creative
daily specials, to the tried and true customer favorites, to the decadent homemade popovers & desserts there is no
doubt as to why Mario’s has stood the
test of time: a dedication to excellence
that is a family tradition.

W
ith over 21 years experience, when you
buy something from us — whether it’s a shed,
gazebo, playhouse or anything else we sell,
you can be sure you’ll feel good about doing
business with us. We are a local
establishment, family-owned and operated.
Stop down sometime and look around,
there’s always something here at Sheds N
Stuff to make your yard a little nicer.
We have built solid relationships with our
customers that consist of trust and respect.
Among the many products we sell are sheds,
barns, gazebos, garages, horse stables and
even dog houses.
We also carry an extensive line of wood
lawn furniture such as picnic tables, benches,
gliders, tables, bridges, wishing wells, arbors,
and just about anything else you may want to
place in your yard.
For the kids, Sheds N Stuff also offers a
large selection of playhouses and jungle
gyms. A new product line for youngsters is
our Adventure World Playsets.
We have also operated a business-
relocation service for over two decades and
have over 21 years experience doing so. We
can move a shed but we also relocate
garages, cabins, even a house.
Whatever we sell you, we can also help
you set it up. Our list of services includes
installation, site preparation work, shed
removal and disposal, and delivery.

Aerus Electrolux — The Healthy Home Experts
N
ow in its 87th year of service, Aerus Electrolux
offers the best in cleaning products for homes and businesses: vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, central
vacuum systems, air purifiers, as well as parts and supplies for all makes and models. Aerus offers the highest
degree of customer satisfaction, resulting in many referrals to friends and family. At Aerus, we believe a clean
home is a healthy home. Aerus also resolves any equipment problems promptly.
This year, Aerus has added its AQ Division, offering
a product that purifies the air, keeps your home’s surfaces clean and eliminates allergens, providing a complete circle of protection. According to the U.S. Environ-
mental Protection Agency, more than 50 million people
suffer from asthma and allergies.
As more energy-efficient homes are constructed,
dust, mold and other pollutants may be trapped inside,
which could result in more indoor than outdoor pollution. Innovative, quality products can help families create home environments that are healthier, safer and
more inviting. These products can help ensure family
health and prevent the growth of harmful allergens.
Aerus Electrolux products are not only for people
with allergies but also for those who just want to
breathe clean air. Your home is a reflection of you and
how you want to live — why not live life well with Ae-
rus? Outstanding, friendly customer service includes local repair, free deliveries, a free annual service check
and the longest warrant in the industry. Aerus also offers a free indoor air-quality test. A no-obligation appointment will be scheduled at your request. Aerus also
is hiring for its growing business.
Did you notice in the photo the newest addition to
the Aerus Electrolux family — little Lilianna? As all of you
do, we care deeply about our future generation and
want them to live in a clean, healthy environment.

We get the job done right the first time
S
ondrini Enterprises was founded
in 1996 by Nathan and Arron
Sondrini with the goal of providing
premiere home improvement services
to Berkshire County. Over the past
16 years we have expanded our
services and product line to better
suit the needs of our valued
customers. We continue to grow
and appreciate the customers who
have allowed us to serve them over
the years, and look for to working
with all of our future clients. We have
also been expanding our services to
surrounding counties.
Some of the services we provide
are chimney repair, new awnings for
your patio or windows, or a roof
repair. We can put on a new
addition or a deck, add a custommade screened enclosure, or
renovate your bathroom. You can
call us if you have storm or ice
damage or need siding replaced.
We will take the time to give you a
free at-home estimate and
consultation. We cater our services
to your specific needs and make sure
you are satisfied upon completion.

leave you in construction limbo, we
finish the jobs we start. We
guarantee our work and your
satisfaction.

We strive hard to make people happy.
W
hether you are getting married
barefoot in the park or having the buttondown church wedding of your dreams,
you will need flowers. Viale Florist has
everything to fit the bill.
Founded in 1906 and purchased by
the Shier Family in 1976, Michele’s father
Robert ran it for 25 years before selling
the business to his daughter.
Michele Shier, owner of this familyoperated business, said “we strive to work
within each person’s budget and
schedule. We can help them if they are
looking for something specific, even if
they call at the last minute and need
something delivered.”
This multi-year winner of Berkshire’s
Best does more than weddings, of
course. The staff of five will help you
choose holiday selections, pick out
appropriate funeral arrangements, or
make sure holiday and birthday bouquets
are delivered as needed. Shier says she
has even delivered after hours when a
birthday girl worked late. She also has
available arrangements with stuffed
animals, chocolates, and balloons. If you
want tropical flowers put into a martini
glass, just let her know.
Expect such standards as roses if you
walk in off the street, but Shier also keeps
an array of seasonal flowers from lilies to
larkspur on hand.

BETTER THAN EVER, SECOND TO NONE
W
hile many businesses face change
and uncertainty, the McAndrews-King full service
motor vehicle dealership boasts a customer
retention rate that is double a 35 percent national
average.
“People feel good coming to us,” Daniel
Maloney, dealership service manager, said.
General manager Larry Choquette said that a
large selection of Buick and GMC vehicles and also a
selection of late model pre-owned cars and trucks is
one reason people return time and again but
there’s more to it than that.
“We are now seeing third generation
customers,” Choquette said. “I can think of several
families that we are now selling cars to the
grandchildren. We have a service record that is
second to none.”
Employees make a point of being friendly and
helpful, and fair pricing is customary. Many
employees have been with the firm for more than
30 years. Choquette has been with the company
for 38 years, office manager Susan Conklin boasts a
36-year tenure and sales representative Wayne
Tassone has been selling vehicles from the lot for
37 years. Maloney has 36 years of company service
as well. Rick King has owned the dealership for
nearly four decades.
“It starts with a lot of good people,” Maloney
said. “It’s integrity, it’s skill, it’s working together as a
team. It’s working together to do our best and do
the right thing. We take care of our customers and
we take care of them well.”
The award winning McAndrews-King service
team comes as standard equipment with all new
and pre-owned cars & trucks.
The dealership repairs all vehicle makes and
models and is a Massachusetts inspection station.

A New Home, But at Mike’s Maytag, You’re Still No. 1!
A
fter 18 years in business, Mike’s
Maytag has finally found a home of its
own! Last year, we moved to 14 Gordon
Street in Pittsfield. Located directly off Elm
Street, across from George’s Package
Store, we are enjoying greater visibility
and more accessibility than our previous
location.
Originally an appliance repairman
with Harder Electric, Mike Spelman went
on to open Mike’s Appliance Repair when
Harder Electric closed in 1992. The
Maytag Corp. approached Mike and
asked him to open a Maytag store in
Berkshire County. The result, Mike’s
Maytag Home Appliance Center, opened
on North Street in 1992. Since Whirlpool
acquired Maytag in November, 2006,
Mike’s now carries a full line of major
appliances, including Maytag, JennAir,
Kitchen Aid, Whirlpool, Estate and
Amana. Our products now include
washers, dryers, gas and electric stoves,
cook tops, wall ovens, microwaves and
refrigerators.
Still family owned and operated,
providing excellent customer service
remains our number one goal. Mike’s
Maytag has consistently been voted “Best
in the Berkshires” nearly every year since
1998, and is a member of the Berkshire
Chamber of Commerce. Mike’s Maytag
supports local organizations as well as
local school organizations. Mike’s Maytag
is open from 9 to 5:30 Monday through
Friday, and on Saturdays from 9 to 3.

Your Sewing Source in the Southern Berkshires
A
re you still staring at that sewing
machine your aunt gave you three years
ago? Well toss away all those
intimidations and head over to The
Sewing Shop in Great Barrington.
Owners Maggie and Bob Quigley offer
individual sewing lessons and will soon
have you whipping up your own
clothes.
This family-owned business has been
around for 21 years, and in the current
location for six years. Aside from sewing
lessons, they sell fabrics and supplies,
sewing machines (both new and used),
and do repairs on sewing machines.
You can also have alterations and
custom work done on men and
women’s clothing as well as items like
curtains and indoor and outdoor
cushions.
Since sewing is no longer taught in
schools, the Quigleys are doing
whatever they can to keep sewing alive.
This includes an honest-to-goodness
sewing circle on Wednesday nights at
the First Congregational Church in Great
Barrington from 5-9 pm. You will not
receive lessons during this time, though
you can probably pick up a few pointers
from those in the group, as well as lively
conversation and the satisfaction in
knowing that you are extending the life
of your favorite garment.

Where Gardeners Grow
D
onald J. Ward Jr. started Ward’s Nursery and Garden
Center at 600 South Main St., Great Barrington in
1957. Starting out with a potting shed, Ward’s has
since grown into a must-see destination for gardeners and holiday enthusiasts. Today two of Don Jr.’s
sons-- Mike and Greg– own and run Ward’s, continuing to add new ideas while maintaining the
same relaxed and personal service Ward’s customers
have experienced for over fifty years. When they
opened their remodeled garden center and tropical
greenhouse in May 2010, Mike and Greg had eliminated the quirks and inefficiencies of a haphazard
building which improved the growing process as
well as their customers’ shopping experience.
At Ward’s you’ll find more than 1,400 perennial
selections, 700 different woody plants, as well as
hundreds of common and unusual annuals, tropicals, and houseplants to personalize your environment. For fall planting, Ward’s carries a large assortment of tulip, daffodil and more unusual bulbs. The
garden center staff will happily guide you through
the excellent selection of seeds, tools and landscape
accessories, and plant health solutions including organic choices.
From October through December, Ward’s
transforms into a holiday decorating showcase
and has become a shopping tradition. Outdoors,
they celebrate harvest themes with gourds,
pumpkins and cornstalks and continue through
the Christmas season with permanent and freshcut trees, garland and wreaths. An extensive selection of seasonal flowers, craft supplies, candles,
gifts, ornaments and stocking-stuffers make
Ward’s a one-stop, holiday marketplace.
At Ward’s, they pride themselves on being a
leader in offering horticulture products you can
count on, knowledgeable staff you can trust,
and great customer service. Please come by and

azzi Friendly Pizza
Gokhan Yildiz, General Manager
Your Friendly Neighborhood Pizza Place
P
aparazzi Friendly Pizza has been in its Elm
Street, Pittsfield location for less than a
year, but has already carved out a name
for itself. Because General Manager Gokhan Yildiz pays special attention to presentation and detail, customers know they
can always expect a delicious, and
delicious-looking, meal.
The restaurant, which is currently takeout and delivery only, offers an extensive
menu that includes pizzas, calzones,
100% Angus beef burgers, chicken en-
trees, salads, pastas, appetizers, fried seafood, gyros, and desserts.
This is a family affair, as Yildiz, who has
16 years of experience in the food industry, runs the eatery, and his father, Esres,
a 25-year veteran of the business, owns
it. Yildiz says that they go that extra step
in every aspect of Paparazzi Friendly
Pizza. The chef, staff, and drivers all wear
uniforms, and he goes beyond the required health code in making sure his
food is safe, such as broiling all his pep-
pers to ensure they are fully cooked
when served on pizzas.
Paparazzi Friendly Pizzas are at least
two inches larger than anyone else’s in
town, as they are 14- and 18-inch round.
And then there is the 24-inch party pizza
for the truly ravenous. The good news is
that if you live in Dalton, Lenox, or Pittsfield, a driver will bring all this yummy
food right to your door! Look for more locations in the future, as the Yildiz family
plans to expand and franchise.

Wally, Shanna, and Fred Meczywor
An Internet solution that’s not just in the Berkshires
W
hen Fred “Menty” Meczywor started
Menty’s Computer repair from his garage in Adams in
1984, the Internet was in its infancy. In 1996 Fred
was joined by his son Wally and daughter in-law
Shanna, and founded Berkshire County Network
offering dial-up Internet access and domain hosting.
Today in their new storefront at 1 East Hoosac Street
in Adams, MA, they also offer high-speed DSL, VOIP,
(digital phone service), and domain hosting for both
residential and businesses with 24/7 technical
support.
The residential High Speed Internet plans are very
popular as more and more people drop their
traditional landlines opting for cell phones instead.
BCN’s DSL does not need a traditional phone line.
BCN offers free set up, doesn’t require contracts, and
has no hidden fees. “People get lured in by the
special deals from from other companies, but when
the initial special trial periods expire they are hit with
additional costs and hidden fees,” says Fred.
In addition to Internet plans, BCN offers VOIP
service similar to Vonage that uses the broadband
access to the Internet like cable, DSL or high-speed
wireless for your phone. The service allows for
unlimited minutes to anywhere in the US and
Canada, free features included caller ID, call waiting,
call forwarding and transfers, voicemail, three-way
calling, and more, and can save up to 70% of the
cost of traditional phone services while keeping their
current phone number. BCN also offers combination
DSL and phone service packages starting at $54 a
month. “Unlike the large phone companies, our
prices don’t go up, in fact they have come down
over the years,” said Wally.
With the refer-a-friend promotion if you refer a
new customer you get a free month’s service (valid
on DSL, Dial-up, and Web hosting) and you can refer
anyone in the United States, and there is no limit on
how many people you can refer.
Fred notes that BCN offers service to anyone not
just Berkshire residents, “We offer internet anywhere
Verizon, AT&T and Bell South offers service.”
We also offer seasonal DSL & VOIP.
BCN also does computer upgrades and repairs at
very reasonable rates and diagnosis is always free.

Everything is homemade and cooked to perfection
H
ow often does one have the chance to
eat at a restaurant on the National Register
of Historic Places? The answer is “every day
except Monday,” if you choose historic Sullivan Station in Lee.
In February 2011, head chef Darleen
Zradi and general manager Jane LaGrant
took over this local hotspot and have
worked diligently to make this 40-year-old
restaurant their own.
The dinner menu is upscale American,
and features such favorites as roast duck-
ling, Veal Oscar, Chicken Piccata, homemade lobster and crab cakes, and homemade gnocchi. At lunch expect to sink your
teeth into a fat club sandwich, an Angus
burger, a homemade veggie burger, or a
wide array of salads. There are several vegetarian and vegan offerings and even glutenfree pasta. Zradi will do special orders and
caters to gluten-free patrons who request a
variation on a regular pasta dish.
Favorite dishes such as the Station Veal
and the Station Chicken were kept on the
menu and fresh fish is offered every Thursday through Sunday. The deck has been
opened up for outside dining and when
the Berkshire Scenic Railway is running it is
possible to get on the train in Lenox, stop
over in Lee for lunch and then resume your
round-trip ride. All aboard!

tax planning, elder law, probate law,
Medicaid eligibility, community based
care, Veterans Administration benefits and
life care planning.
Almgren Law focuses on presenting
many options to clients and then putting
together a plan unique to each situation.
The common theme is preparation and
control of the present and the future;
who will be the guardian of your children, who will make medical decisions in
case of incapacity, how best to transfer assets to trusts for your lifetime benefit, how
to finance home care or long-term skilled
care, how to obtain Veterans benefits,
how to protect privacy and lower costs by
avoiding probate, and how to minimize
estate tax exposure.
We thoroughly understand eligibility

Delicious BBQ at affordable prices
A
small restaurant for people with big
appetites, this Canaan, New York eatery is
a BBQ bonanza. Expect dry-rubbed meats,
homemade sauces, homemade soup, chili,
corn bread, and pizza sauce. Owners Terry
and Kevin Durlack hand-cut their own fries,
make their own coleslaw and slow-cooked
beans. The Angus burgers are handpacked and the fresh fish is coated in their
own beer batter.
The business was established in 2006
and the Durlacks took over in 2009. The
couple learned to smoke meat from local
legend Hickory Bill, so you know that their
hand-pulled meats and ribs will taste
delicious with or without sauce.
Terry Durlack says that since the
restaurant is only 10 miles from Pittsfield,
she gets locals, people who drive over after
work, and tourists passing through. The
atmosphere is relaxed; either sit at the
outside picnic tables or at stools at the long
bar inside. Liquor is not sold, but you can
bring your own.
Because Durlack sells full and half
sandwiches, you can mix and match, just
in case you were wondering about that
fried chicken, the pizza, smoked whole
chickens, or the grinders. Oh, and for you
hearty eaters, the Durlacks open at 9 am

Courtyard — Marian Hall, Maria College Campus.
Science and technology, together with kindness and compassion
M
aria College recently announced
its newest endeavor: the upper-division
nursing program leading to a Bachelor of
Science degree in Nursing. Designed with
the high standards and academic excellence that Maria is built on, the RN-BS in
Nursing Program will complement the
nursing offerings for which the College has
already earned respect.
The new degree will enable the College
to offer three levels of nursing education: a
practical nurse certificate (LPN training), an
associate degree in nursing, and the RN-BS
completion program. As always, the focus
will be on caring, on a teaching-learning
environment, and on personal and professional growth.
The focus of the RN-BS curriculum is the
older adult, as demographics show an increase in this population. The curriculum is
unique in its combination of courses that
will expand the graduate’s knowledge, as
well as offer clinical experiences through
community-based programs/services and
outreach programs, also centered on the
older adult. In addition, there will be some
crossover between this program and
Maria’s certificate program in gerontology.
Maria College strives, as always, to remain true to its history of service and commitment to caring for which it has come to
be known. The new nursing program
beautifully embodies this tradition and philosophy, while reaching into the future to
meet the needs of the people and community it will serve.

Berkshire Co-op Market
Here to Help!
Quite certainly, more than a store.
B
erkshire Co-op Market is more than a
natural food store. It’s a cooperative. That
means that, unlike a typical business, The Coop is owned by the community and beholden
to values beyond simple profit. Instead, co-op
owners have laid out priorities like the local
food supply, environmental stewardship,
community education and the regional
economy to go along with running a
successful business. To that end, The Co-op
runs a profitable natural and organic food
store that acts as a vehicle to affect the
community in positive ways. Open to all
shoppers, The Co-op specializes in local
products and organic foods. In the growing
season, the produce department is teeming
with the wares of local farmers, when local is
unavailable high quality organics take their
place. The grocery aisles are packed with all
natural and organic offerings that not only
meet our chemical free vetting process but

Superior products and exceptional customer service.
T
his family-run energy company
has been serving Berkshire County
since 1910. It began as a coal/iron
company and then moved to oil,
gas, and steel. Now this fourth generation family business offers residential and commercial heating oil
delivery, service, and installation.
The crews from Lipton Energy will
install your heating or air conditioning
system, as well as maintain it. Owners
Michael Lipton and his father Sanford
also provide 24-hour service, so you
never have to worry about freezing if
your heating system fails in the middle
of an icy January night. Lipton offers
competitive pricing and you can set up
a budget plan. You can also lock in
your oil at a fixed price before the heating season starts and set up an automatic delivery schedule.
The Liptons also own and operate
seven convenience stores in Pittsfield,
Lenox, Great Barrington, and Lee. So
while you are having your new central
air or heating system installed, you can
run out for gasoline, diesel fuel, a lottery ticket, milk, or snacks.
In both their Energy Company and
with their convenience stores Michael
Lipton stresses that it is customer service
that is most important.

equipment, HL Fuel delivers heating oil,
kerosene, and low-sulfur diesel fuel to 3500
customers in New York, Massachusetts, and
Vermont, as well as propane in both Massachusetts and Vermont. Their team of highly
qualified service technicians can maintain
your equipment in top operating condition
to guarantee safety, maximize efficiency,
and minimize your fuel cost.
A well-tuned heating system reduces
emissions and helps keep the environment
clean. If it is time to replace your old system,
the technicians at HL will work with you to
determine what equipment best meets your
needs, then deliver and install it at a competitive price.
Harry Hicks, president of this familyowned business, stresses the importance of
having your heating equipment serviced annually. “In the spring we send out our service contract offerings and at that time of the
year we will service the systems at a
reduced-cost basis.”
The company offers customers the ability
to check on their account on-line, and customers can access customer service via
phone or email. Emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
If a customer runs out of fuel, HL promises
to arrive within three hours of being notified.
Good news for customers is that fuel
prices are very competitive. Hicks said that
“in most cases we will beat any price.”

Why Darrow?
M
any independent schools can
look and sound similar, but, in fact, each
has distinguishing features that set it apart
to create a unique culture and learning
atmosphere. The only school to be situated
on the site of an historic Shaker village,
Darrow offers a learning environment that
reflects an appreciation for collaboration,
community, hands-on learning, and the
rewards of productive, fulfilling work.
Perhaps the greatest way to summarize
all of the differences at Darrow is to say that
we take education to a personal level.
Students live and work together with faculty
in an environmentally conscious setting,
where teachers and students are always
available for consultation and collaboration.
The combination of personalized feedback
from highly accessible faculty and hands-on
effort from each individual allows every
student to clearly see that he or she makes
a difference.

Berkshiree Money Management
Berkshir
It’s a Basset Hound Market.
W
hat’s going on today isn’t a Bear Market. It certainly isn’t a Bull Market. Forget
the Bull/Bear debate - an entirely different
animal is needed to represent the next 510 years.
It’s a Basset Hound Market. Feel free
to choose whichever animal you prefer the point is that unless you are working
with Berkshire Money Management
(BMM), the way your current financial advisor tries to navigate the markets simply
doesn’t work anymore.
A Basset Hound Market is characterized by a tight trading range, increased
volatility, pronounced stock correlations, and sudden reversals. What your
portfolio needs during a period like that
is BMM.
What your portfolio needs is an investment advisor who knows to get more
growth-oriented when the markets are
going up, and to get more conservative
when the markets are going down. If
your advisor isn’t doing that, then your
portfolio – and your family – deserve
more. We encourage you to contact us
today so that we may propose how you
and your family can be treated better.

economic loss to the investor. “Historical performance is not
indicative of future results. The investment return will fluctuate with market conditions.” Investment in securities, including mutual funds, involves the risk of loss.
