Th e D r a k e H o t e l • C h i c a g o , I L This activity is sponsored by Medical Education Resources. Chicago • May 17-19 This activity is supported by an educational grant from EMD Serono, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Merck and TEVA Women’s Health Research. Welcome from the Executive Chairperson A nge l ine N . B e l t sos , M D , facog O n Behalf of My Colleagues at Fertility Centers of Illinois (FCI), I would like to welcome you to the 2012 Midwest Reproductive Symposium (MRS) and Nurse Practicum. This is one of our biggest meetings ever – with a scientific program of excellence that will permit you ample opportunity to discuss the most up-to-date information with your colleagues and the faculty. While this year’s MRS reflects its reputation both nationally and internationally, the meeting actually evolved from recognition of a need to further the education of health professionals and scientists involved in Reproductive Medicine to be held in the Midwestern section of the United States. FCI facilitated the dialogue that led to the very first meeting in 2005 and has served as the meeting host ever since. As we began to organize the initial program, the following were the points that we felt were important: • Health professionals and basic scientists in the field could use additional ‘closer-to-home’ opportunities to share knowledge and experience. • Reproductive Medicine encompasses a broad range of rapidly advancing fields appropriate for inclusion in educational programs. • One drawback of major medical meeting in the limited opportunity for attendee input on topics of current debate. The MRS directly resulted from our discussions, and each of the above points remains critical to the meeting’s success. We remain dedicated to ensuring an opportunity for ‘closer-to-home’ education as well a world-wide participation for health professionals. Our programming and format of the meeting reflect the input of the MRS Chairpersons, prior faculty and attendees, as well as my colleagues at FCI. We pride ourselves in gathering noted authorities to present the most current aspects of their research and how they apply to everyday clinically relevant issues- the same issues that you may encounter in your practice. I hope that you will find the meeting topics this year to be timely and relevant, and the presentations, discussions, and workshops to be stimulating. We look forward to your participation in the program and encourage your feedback for the future. Sincerely, Angeline N. Beltsos Angeline N. Beltsos, MD, FACOG Executive Chairperson, Midwest Reproductive Symposium and Nurse Practicum Fertility Centers of Illinois Welcome from Fertility Centers of Illinois (FCI) W E ARE PROUD TO CONTINUE to host this program of excellence, and we are pleased that our conversations led to not only the initial MRS meeting in 2005, but also to the Nurse Practicum, piloted in 2008 and formally introduced as a tracked day of interactive discussion and hands-on learning in 2011. FCI looks forward to continued educational outreach and the opportunity for additional collaborative programming as the MRS grows in the coming years. We hope that you will take full advantage of all the learning opportunities that this meeting affords- workshops, presentations, panels, and informal conversations. We reiterate what Dr. Beltsos has said – give us your feedback, and we will try to make it happen in future programming. Thank-You to our Chairpersons and Organizing Committee Angeline N. A Brief History of the Midwest Reproductive Symposium (MRS) 2004 Discussion initiated by Angeline Beltsos, MD and colleagues at Fertility Centers of Illinois regarding the need for ‘closer-to-home’ quality continuing education for health professionals and scientists in Reproductive Medicine in the Midwestern section of the United States. All meetings would be held in Chicago, IL due to its central location, availability of venues, and ease of access. 2005 The first meeting of the MRS is held at the Hotel Intercontinental. Sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from Ferring Pharmaceuticals, the 2.5 day program was attended by 80 registrants and deemed a success. 2006 The second meeting, held at the Swissotel, drew 130 registrants. The meeting was opened to exhibitors for the first time. 2007 The third meeting was the first held at the Drake Hotel and also was the first to include hands-on workshops based on suggestions offered by attendees and faculty at prior programs. Also, based on feedback, the meeting was shortened to a 2-day program. About 150 attendees were in session. 2008 The 2008 meeting was held at the Marriott Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile Hotel and attended by 160 attendees and included 18 exhibitors. Fertility Centers of Illinois initiated the first MRS Nurse Practicum, which was an extra half-day of interactive discussion and hands-on learning held onsite at FCI’s River North facility on Sunday. 2009 In 2009, the Drake Hotel was designated as the official meeting hotel by FCI and the Organizing Committee of the MRS. The 2-day program was attended by 180 persons and included 22 exhibitors. For the first time, abstracts were sought from REI Fellows, and eight were invited to the meeting to present posters. The MRS today is recognized as a relevant and innovative meeting of excellence that attracts attendees from around the world... 2010 The 2010 meeting exceeded expectations, drawing 240 persons from around the world including 26 exhibitors. A total of 16 abstracts were included for presentation in the REI Fellows Posters. The 2010 meeting included the first official Nurse Practicum Day, which was held on Thursday preceding the MRS. This session developed by nurses for nurses was attended by 80 participants. In 2010, the MRS scientific session became a multi-sponsored program. 2011 The 2011 meeting again exceeded expectations, drawing over 300 persons from around the world including again 26 exhibitors. The 2011 meeting included the first Business Managers meeting which was geared toward educating office managers. The MRS 2011 also was the third successful year for the Nurse Practicum. The MRS Today The MRS today is recognized as a relevant and innovative meeting of excellence that attracts attendees from around the world, but still keeps its focus on providing the needed ‘close-to-home’ continuing education for those healthcare professionals practicing in the Midwestern US. The 2012 meeting will be the biggest ever, with over 300 persons attending and more than 30 exhibitors. The Business Minds Program, formerly known as the Business Minds Meeting, will also take place again this year.. The scientific program is supported by unrestricted educational grants from EMD Serono, Inc., Ferring Pharmaceuticals Inc., Merck and TEVA Women’s Health. © 2012 The Midwest Reproductive Symposium (MRS), Chicago, Illinois.
