The World according to Pullman
Welcome to the 34th issue of PULLMAN magazine, featuring the finest and rarest collectable pieces
that have deservedly achieved classic status, timeless designs that we feel are in a class of their own
when it comes to undeviating quality and interest.
Our front cover is reserved for outstanding imagery created by ‘Cassandre’, (Adolphe Mouron,
1901-1968), one of the most accomplished and influential illustrators of his age, for Triplex. Only
a genius could have conceived such a dramatic means of advertising something as mundane as
automobile glass. The automotive theme is well represented in this issue with a striking watercolour
and gouache of the great Italian ace, Tazio Nuvolari, known as Flying Mantuan, in the all-powerful
Auto Union at the historic Nürburgring. Two super-rare examples of 1920s tinplate toys modelled
on the Alfa Romeo P2 by CIJ, best of the specialist toymakers, and detailed Maserati Tipo 250F and
Aston Martin DBR/1 models continue the theme, together with a superb large-scale, one-off model
of the 1937 Auto Union 16 cylinder ‘c’ type.
No less significant are fine, period Sterling silver models of the Morane-Saulnier monoplane from
the dawn of aviation, the Supermarine S6B racing seaplane, forebear of the legendary Spitfire, and
a WWII Whitley bomber. A distinguished (and delightful) regimental rarity in the form of a table
lighter fashioned round the legend of The Dragon of Wantley, a set of unique design sketches for
Dunhill’s successful Aquarium series, and an exceptional group of typically stylish Hermès and
Louis Vuitton pieces, all add variety.
Elsewhere on these pages we highlight a select line-up of classic cocktail shakers, once a symbol of
glamour and sophistication, and increasingly sought-after today by discerning collectors worldwide.
And, speaking of collectors, few could rival the connoisseurship of New Yorker Doris Duke (19121993), tobacco heiress and philanthropist. Nothing can illustrate better her unerring instinct for the
best than the enterprisingly original Asprey cigar and cigarette boxes, of impeccable provenance
and deserving of serious mention.
A magnificent large-scale painting by Dexter Brown depicting the Ferrari P4 in the 1967 Targa
Florio, rounds off this issue, along with news of our next Dexter Brown exhibition, later this year.

by noted French artist Luc Lanel for the ocean liner ‘Normandie’ c.1936,
exhibiting the hallmarks of Art Deco styling to conscious effect in the

The Dragon of Wantley: a distinguished military rarity in the form of a
Sterling silver regimental table lighter, owing its origins to the 17th century
fable surrounding the formidable fire-breathing reptilian. Legend has it
that the dragon filled luckless inhabitants of Lancashire with terror before
the appearance of a dragon-slaying knight who vanquished the mythical
monster in a fiercely-fought struggle.
In fine, original condition, with removable head, ‘cigar’ to the dragon’s
mouth, ‘arrow’ taper holder and ibex horn representing the creature’s
long tail, every component of the lighter is profusely hallmarked Walker
& Hall, Sheffield, 1927. The Dragon of Wantley, unique among historic
regimental Mess table pieces, ranks as one of the best in terms of quality

Aquatic achievement
Six examples from Pullman’s extensive collection of Dunhill’s iconic1950s
‘Aquarium’ table lighters by Ben Shillingford (1904-2001), the expert
engraver responsible for carving out the Perspex using the reverse intaglio
technique. His finished panels were then passed to London artists (such
as Margaret Bennett, see right) to paint the design in reverse. Launched
in 1949, no two lighters were the same, each was unique. Width 4 inches
(10 cms). Please contact us for individual prices.
Artist at work: four sets of unique pencil and watercolour designs for Alfred
Dunhill’s successful ‘Aquarium’ series of cigarette boxes and humidors by
Margaret Bennett. The illustrations feature cover and side-panel designs for
cigar boxes and have been annotated in-house by Dunhill with particular
attention to final dimensions and positioning of the images. Reverse signed
by artist. A provisional ‘Aquarium’ design rendered in oil is also included.

In the pink: extremely rare, non-aquatic ‘Aquarium’ table lighter in
excellent condition, the intaglio decoration of pink and blue flamingoes
is set against a water-themed landscape. Considerably scarcer than the
usual underwater scenes, it is the non-aquatic versions of these rare
lighters – those with birds, hunting scenes, horse-racing and so on – that
are most highly sought-after by collectors. English, c.1950. Ref 4102

Provenance: from the estate of Doris Duke, a discerning collector and innovative philanthropist.
Long distance information: two remarkable and unique Sterling silver boxes made especially for
Doris Duke (1912-1933) by Asprey, London in 1936 and 1937 respectively. Both carry road maps of
North America, with numerous cities marked by small apertures. The distances between selected cities
are indicated by withdrawing an engraved slide, enabling one to see varying distances between, say,
Miami and New York, Chicago to Los Angeles and so on. Fine, unique pieces with an ingenuity and
ultimate quality for which Asprey was renowned.

Doris Duke (1912- 1993), the Lucky Strike tobacco heiress, has been called ‘a rich girl on the run’. Yet
she was a lifelong collector who pursued her diverse interests enthusiastically. Many, including one of
the world’s most infamous playboys and an evil butler, had designs on the considerable fortune that she
managed to keep intact. Her life was full of incident – she memorably put up surety of millions of dollars
for Imelda Marcos’s bail – and in 1999 her life story was filmed as Too Rich: The Secret Life of Doris
Duke. It is estimated she gave away over $400 million dollars, often as anonymous contributions.

Silver Arrows
Tazio Nuvolari in the Type ‘C’ Auto Union, Nurburging 1936: a dramatic
depiction of the Italian maestro, considered by many to be the greatest driver
of all time, at speed in the all-conquering Auto Union. A winningly evocative
watercolour heightened with gouache by Walter Gotschke (1912-1989).
Gotschke, of Czech-German origin, made legitimate claim to being one of the
most successful illustrators of his generation, creating several striking motor
racing posters. In wartime, as nations hastened to commission illustrators
and graphic designers to produce information and propaganda posters,
Gotschke was recruited as an official war artist. Post-war, his impressionistic
style deservedly reached a wider audience yet examples of his acclaimed
automotive subjects are hard to find today. Signed by the artist, mounted,
glazed and framed. Literature: Automobile Quarterly, 1971 and 1989.

Teutonic Titan: a powerful example of the model maker’s art in the form of
a uniquely-rendered, and unique 16-cylinder Auto Union ‘c’ Type, meticulously
detailed and impressive in scale. A memorable tribute to the awesome Auto
Union, one of the all-conquering German race cars, aka the ‘Silver Arrows’ that
dominated pre-war Grand Prix circuits, shaping the history of motor sport during
the last century. Length overall: 36 inches (90 cms). Ref 4148

Pullman Car
Model behaviour: extreme rarity represented by two superb examples
of the invincible supercharged Alfa Romeo P2 by CIJ (Compagnie
Industrielle du Jouet), ranking among the best of the quality toymakers.
Both clockwork tinplate models are from the coveted first series, circa
1925, both are equipped with stencilled clover-leaf emblem to the
radiator and ‘balloon’ tyres, and both carry race number 2. Finished in
the exceptionally scarce green and rosso corsa livery respectively, the
former is complete with original key. Outstanding. Length of each 22
inches (56 cms). Ref 4106, 4124
Fastly superior: a fine 1:8 scale model with an exceptional eye for detail of the 1954 Maserati 250F,
mounted on a plinth, enclosed in a Plexiglas presentation case and etched with the characteristic
Maserati Trident trademark. Officine Alfieri Maserati built only 26 examples of the front-engined
monoposto, campaigned with conspicuous success by Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss,
among other drivers of distinction. Length 24 inches (60 cms). Ref 4126
Model approach: a finely made 1:8 scale British classic in the form of the 1959 Aston Martin DBR/1.
A fully and accurately detailed model with correct instrumentation and upholstered seats, and the
whole mounted on a plinth and enclosed within a Plexiglas case and incised with the distinctive Aston
Martin logo. The DBR/1 scored a famous victory at Le Mans in 1959, the marque’s finest competition
triumph. Length 24 inches (60 cms). Ref 4127

set of twelve Sterling silver Art Deco-influenced
vintage motoring themed place-card holders by
luxury goods maker Hermès. Today, complete
sets in perfect condition are a rarity. Length of
each 4 inches (10 cms), all stamped HERMÈS and
complete with fitted Hermès case. One for the fast
set? Ref 2342
(Opposite bottom) Cuboid: a pair of particularly
stylish and rare silvered bronze ashtrays of
substantial proportion, fashioned in the shape of
gambling dice and marked HERMÈS PARIS. The
revered French maker, a founding element in the
story of modern luxury objets, is forever associated
with pieces of undisputed quality. Both 3 inches (8
cms) square. Ref 4116
(Above) Snappy dresser: a very scarce ‘Sac à
Dépêche’ gentleman’s briefcase in tan Crocodilus
Porosos, the finest crocodile skin in the world. Of
recent manufacture, this example is in effectively
unused condition, complete with key fob and
two keys. Signed Hermès, Paris, width 16 inches
(40 cms) Ref 4154. The ‘Sac à Dépêche’ was
first introduced by Hermès in 1937, one of its
first customers being HRH the Duke of Windsor.
John Kennedy famously has an example in black
crocodile given to him by Jacqueline Bouvier
Kennedy in 1953. The ‘Sac à Dépêche’ remains in
production today, the Crocodilus Porosos version
carrying a 4-5 year waiting list.

presentation case, circa 1950. The equine
influence owes its origins to the founding of the
French company as a saddler in the 19th Century.
The first Hermès bag, used to carry saddles and
bridles, soon followed with conspicuous success.

Speed matters: a finely rendered Sterling silver model of the superfast
Supermarine S.6B racing seaplane, designed by R.J. Mitchell, later
responsible for the legendary Spitfire. Fitted with a rotating propeller,
elevators, ailerons and articulated rudder and mounted on a black, ebonised
base. Mitchell’s Supermarine aircraft were a conspicuous success in the
series of Schneider Trophy races, headline news at the time, and outright
winners of the contest in 1931. Hallmarked Saunders and Shepherd, 1931.

Making it plane: a finely conceived Sterling silver model of the famed
Morane- Saulnier Type H monoplane by Mappin & Webb. The engine
cowl engraved with MS monogram and the model equipped with turning
engine and propeller. Mounted on an ebonised wooden base. The Type

H, evolved from Leon and Robert Morane’s Sport airframe, entered the
record books in 1913, when pioneer French aviator and Morane-Saulnier
test pilot Roland Garros made the first non-stop flight from the South of
France to Tunisia. The monoplane saw service in the First World War,
operating with both the French military and Royal Flying Corps (forerunner

Bombed up: historic Sterling silver presentation model of an Armstrong
Whitworth AW38 Whitley. A finely detailed version of the front-line medium
bomber, mounted on an ebonised wooden base with inscribed plaque
affixed. The legend reads: A W Clegg in appreciation from his many
friends at Sir W G Whitworth Aircraft Lid, Coventry, February 1944. John
Lloyd’s twin-engined Whitley, an integral part of the early air offensive,
won its spurs on the first RAF bombing raid over enemy territory. The
name derives from the Coventry suburb of Whitley, site of the plane
maker’s factory. Hallmarked Mappin & Webb, Sheffield, 1938. Wingspan:

Supermarine: an important Supermarine S.5 Schneider Trophy model,
in Sterling silver, presented to the 1927 race winners. The citation to the
hallmarked plaque reads: Supermarine-Napier S.5.1st & 2nd Schneider
Cup Race, Venice 1927. Piloted by Flt.Lt. S. N. Webster AFC 1st, Flt.
Lt. O.W.Worsley 2nd, Creating World’s Speed Record of 281.6 mph.
Mounted on stepped ebonised wooden base. French industrialist
Jacques Schneider’s Coupe d’Aviation Maritime Jacques Schneider
was launched in 1913 to encourage the advance of marine aviation.
Reginald Mitchell, Supermarine’s chief designer and the man behind the
Spitfire, built the streamlined S5 monoplane for the 1927 contest, won
by Webster, a serving Royal Air Force officer and member of Britain’s
High Speed Flight. Hallmarked G&S Ltd (Goldsmiths and Silversmiths

Winner takes all: an important Schneider Trophy winning Supermarine
S6B racing seaplane, modelled as a table lighter by Asprey to mark
Britain’s historic victory in 1931. The 1931 race, a contest of pure speed,
proved the high point in the series when the British entry took the trophy

Travelling Companions
The Taste of Luxury: exquisite example of a
miniature Louis Vuitton trunk in the form of a
rare 1920s ‘Flower Trunk’. LV Monogramme
prominent, lock signed Louis Vuitton.
Complete with leather carrying handles.

The inimitable Gallic allure of the ‘Flower Trunk’
was further enhanced by exclusiveness:
never produced for sale, the trunks were
offered only to favoured clients with the aim
of publicising the distinctive LV Monogramme
(first introduced in 1897). A number of trunks
(zinc-lined and water-resistant, and ideal for
carrying freshly-cut flowers), have since been
redesigned by the makers as jewellery and
trinket cases, or cigarette boxes. Literature:

Vuitton in the shape of early Edwardian Steamer bags, modelled on an authentic
19th century US Mail bag, and designed to fit inside the maker’s grand Steamer
trunk, complete with original brass padlock and key Ref 3159; shown alongside,

introduced in 1901 and discontinued three years later in favour of the distinctive

secure padlock and key Ref 4132; a sizeable early version of a ‘Square Mouth’

Encompassing the defining style of Louis
Vuitton, is this extraordinary example of the
exceptionally rare Malle Aéro (Aeroplane Trunk).
Designed to be light in weight, compact and
versatile, the Malle Aéro weighed only 57 lbs
(26 kgs) when packed with a prescribed list of
contents. Finished in orange Vuittonite with all
leather and brass fitments. Length: 32 inches
(80 cms) Ref 4139. As the 20th century was
ushered in, conquest of the air was seen as
the most significant challenge to a whole
generation and France was very properly given
her due as the country where flying attracted
the greatest interest, including the attention of
Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur. Meanwhile,
two French brothers, Pierre and Jean Vuitton,
themselves pioneer aviators, contrived the ultralight Malle Aéro, exhibited at the Paris Air Show
in 1910. The opportunity to acquire such pieces

Dexter Brown (British, born 1942): ‘1967
Targa Florio – Guichet/Muller, Ferrari P4’,
original painting, acrylic on board, signed and
dated 1980. This large and uncompromising
painting, depicting one of Ferrari’s most
beautiful models, was executed by Dexter
Brown in 1980. Dimensions: 48 x 48 inches
