IN THE SPOTLIGHT
What Would Classical / Jazz Music Be without Cape Town's
Best ?
Rezah Sampson also known as Zah by his peers, social
media and Cape Town - is a young, stylish and vibrant artist
coming from humble beginnings and growing up in the
Cape Flats.
His music career started at the age of 6 when he was found
playing The Carpenters, The Beatles, Joe Sample, George
Benson, by ear in his home on his father's keyboard.
He then started taking lessons in classical and jazz
performance throughout his primary school and high school
career where he excelled and received distinctions in his
performing and theoretical ability in Music.
At the age of 15 he was already selected to perform in his
high school's Senior Big Band, Tentet and Quartet as a solo
pianist. He also entered the Royal School of Music and
Trinity Guildhall performances where he achieved the
highest accolades and top results.
Due to his gift and talent he was given the opportunity to
perform with award winning South African jazz
saxophonist, Shannon Mowday, Darryl Andrews,
performed in the Alvin Dyers Ensemble, brother to the great
Errol Dyers. He has also performed at the V&A
Amphitheatre, Big Band Jazz Festival for three consecutive
years and various other well known venues and music
festivals around Cape Town.

THE ULTIMATE
LEGENDS
MAKES
HISTORY
By JESSICA
GOLDSTEIN
If you missed the first hour and a
half of the Grammys, you didn’t
miss anything at all.
We got a solid 90 minutes of liteFM-in-the-waiting-room-at-thedentist’s-office, ballads that
sounded like they were trying not
to wake the kids, tepid,
forgettable, stuff. Taylor Swift
opened the show in head-to-toe
glitter, strutting and striking poses
through a competent but
otherwise unremarkable rendition
of “Out of the Woods.” (She
arguably demonstrated more
enthusiasm a bit later on, playing
her role as designated So Happy
For You friend when her “Blank
Space” lost Song of the Year to
“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed
Sheeran, that disheveled
millennial who looks like a
perpetually-hungover Weasley.)
The Weeknd was supposed to
perform with Lauryn Hill, but she
backed out at the last minute,
which is as decent an excuse as
any for his fine but forgettable
moves through “Can’t Feel My
Face” and “In the Night.” Stevie
Wonder, real master of
ceremonies, teased the nominees
for Song of the Year by waving
the envelope in their faces (it was
in Braille) before making a
serious statement: “We need to
make every single thing
accessible for every person with a
disability.”
Lamar, who at the time had just
won his fifth Grammy of the
night, appeared onstage in
shackles, chains clanging all the
way down the microphone stand,
linked to a fleet of dancers in
prison blues. The band was
behind bars. Interesting editing
choices aside — the camera cuts
on top of the strobe light was a
little/lot much — his was the first
moment, in a night that never
stopped promising Grammy
Moments (TM), that felt vital,
urgent, alive. The dancing
exploded as a bonfire bloomed
behind Lamar’s head; he shed the
handcuffs and transitioned from
“The Blacker The Berry” to
“Alright,” leaning into that we
gon’ be alright hook like it was
more than an affirmation. When
he was done, an image of Africa
with an all-caps COMPTON
stamped across the center loomed
in the background.

Painting, according to Wikipedia, is the
practice of applying paint, pigment, or
other medium to a surface.
The first H&M South Africa store opened at
the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town last
month, and was followed by an opening in
Sandton City, in Joburg on Wednesday.
The store announced its presence in
Sandton with a VIP shopping evening on
Wednesday, when celebrities, VIP shoppers
and the media got a sneak peak at the store.
Despite Somizi’s tweet on Wednesday night
that the launch was “mass and mess” and “a
waste of my outfit &Time [sic]”, the night
was a huge success, with DJ Zinhle and
Black Coffee on the decks.
There’s been a slew of international brands
and retailers opening stores in South Africa,
and for the most part, the prices have been
less than considerate to South African
consumers. So, we were pleasantly
surprised that the average price at H&M is
about R300 to R400.

OMG what he just
said about her
Grammy date with
Odell Beckham Jr.!
Jaws dropped when Zendaya walked the red carpet with football
star Odell Beckham Jr. at the Grammys after-party on Monday:
When it comes to Queen Z attending events, she usually goes
solo. If Zendaya brings a date anywhere, then he must mean a
lot to her, right?
When TMZ caught the pair leaving the after-party with her dad,
Kazembe, they asked Kazembe what the deal with the
surprising pair was and his answer will literally make you cringe
in the most hilarious way possible.
"Do you approve of this relationship?" the reporter asked Z's dad
as he climbed into their waiting SUV.
"What relationship?" Kazembe shot back. "There's no
relationship. They're just friends... It's like an audition. It's an
interview."
ROFL! Zendaya's dad is basically every overprotective,
embarrassing dad you know who wants to screen your dates!
Obviously, Zendaya and Odell aren't serious yet, but could there
be a future for them? Well, TMZ followed up with Kazembe and
it turns out Odell totally passed his audition process. "He
actually was a perfect gentleman, he was polite, he was
courteous, he was respectful in every way," he told TMZ. "I
absolutely commend that young man."
Zendaya's Dad Is Every
Embarrassing Dad When It
Comes to His Daughter Dating
But like Kazembe said in the video, it's not up to him who
Zendaya dates, so the important question is, did Odell pass
Queen Z's audition process?
Guess we'll have to wait and see!

THE 7 WORST THINGS
YOUR CRUSH COULD
EVER SAY TO YOU
There are some things you just don ' t ever want
to hear come out of your crush ' s mouth .
by Jay Diamond
1. "What's your name?" Like, you
knew they didn't like you or anything,
and you're barely even friends, but
you've sat next to each other for
months, you bond over how
ridiculous your teacher's assignments
are all the time, and you've lent them
so many pencils and pieces of gum.
And they didn't even know your name
the whole time?! UNACCEPTABLE.
3. "She's like my sister." You're like what? There's no.
way. they just said you're like their sister. You
imagine romantic walks on the beach and kissing
them under the stars, and they see you as their —
Nope. You can't bare to finish that sentence without
gagging.
2. "Does [INSERT YOUR BEST FRIEND'S
NAME HERE] like me?" What do you
even say to that? Your first inclination
is to say NO! But then you start
thinking about it, and all these crazy
things start going through your head.
Why would they even ask that
question? Does your bestie have this
otherworldly connection with your
crush that you didn't know about? No
way... you would know, right? RIGHT?!
5. "Who's your friend?" This is what they say to you
conspiratorially when you bring a new friend around
and you can tell they're asking because they think
she's cute. You want to tell them to stop finding your
new friend hot — you've been right in front of them
ALL ALONG.
4. "You like [INSERT NAME THAT IS NOT THEIR'S],
don't you?" "No, I like YOU!" you want to scream.
How could they not know?!
6. "I need to find someone like you." What do they
even mean, they need to find someone like you?
Someone like you is right in front of their face. It's
YOU!
7. "Who should I go to prom with?"
You can assume they mean
someone other than you if they
have to ask.

ANGELA RAIOLA, ‘BIG
ANG’ OF TV’S ‘MOB
WIVES,’ DIES AT 55
by Samantha McArthur
Photos by John Adams
Angela Raiola, the formidable but lovable
reality TV star known as “Big Ang” who
attracted a cult following as the most
visible cast member of VH1’s “Mob Wives,”
died early Thursday in New York. She was
55.
Ms. Raiola died from complications of
cancer in a New York hospital after she
contracted pneumonia, Jennifer Graziano,
the show’s creator and executive producer,
said in an interview.
Big Ang, whose nickname stemmed from
her larger-than-life personality (and her
apparent fondness for plastic surgery), was
a niece of Salvatore Lombardi, known as
Sally Dogs, of the Genovese crime family.
She had been open not only about her
illness but also about her past struggles,
including a felony drug conviction. Those
problems were spun into significant story
lines for the VH1 show.
Even as her health worsened, Ms. Raiola
continued to document her life on “Mob
Wives” and “Couples Therapy,” also on
VH1.

The cameras rolled as she detailed her
discovery of Stage 2 throat cancer and, later,
the removal of a lemon-size tumor from her
throat. She also documented a medical visit
in which a doctor told her she had to have a
biopsy on her lung. A longtime smoker, she
was frank about how difficult it was for her
to kick the habit.
Ms. Raiola discussed her condition at length
in an appearance on the “Dr. Oz” show
broadcast on Tuesday, in which she revealed
that she had Stage 4 lung and brain cancer.
She said that doctors were positive smoking
had caused the lung cancer.
“I was smoking for 40 years,” she said in the
interview. “I think whoever smokes should
quit, and if they didn’t start, don’t start.”
FEBRUARY 2016
Ms. Raiola is survived by her husband, Neil
Murphy; two children; and six grandchildren.
“Mob Wives,” which had its premiere in
2011, offered a rare glimpse inside the lives
of women tied to the Mafia — a sisterhood
whose hierarchy is determined by its
members’ ability to remain silent about the
actions of their husbands, fathers or sons,
whose involvement in “the lifestyle”
invariably resulted in prison time.
On the show, respect is rigidly defined, and it
is easy for the women to run afoul of each
another — minuscule shifts in allegiances
could result in tense, expletive-filled
showdowns and violent rants. The feuds
often carried over into Twitter, helping to
ensure a ratings hit for the network and side
businesses, which included Big Ang Wines,
for the women.
But it was Ms. Raiola’s raspy voice; tall,
buxom appearance (she was said to stand 5foot-10; and ability to add comic relief and
common sense to tense situations that
quickly made her a fan favorite. Big Ang had
seen her share of wise guys. Catfights, she
said, were not her forte.
Last March, the bar was shut down
after a New York State Liquor
Authority investigation found that
Ms. Raiola, who did not hold its liquor
license, was acting as owner and
operator, The Staten Island Advance
reported. Ms. Raiola’s past felony
conviction prohibited her from
owning a bar. In a recent episode of
“Mob Wives,” she was seen meeting
with a lawyer in an effort to have her
rights restored.
Ms. Graziano, the show’s producer,
said that Ms. Raiola’s status as a fan
favorite extended to people who
worked on the show.
“She would feed the entire cast and
crew,” Ms. Graziano said, adding that
Ms. Raiola loved “any, any excuse for
a party.”
