WINNAPAUG COTTAGES NEWSLETTER September Issue 5 41 Winnapaug Cottages Newsletter September 2015 TO KEEP YOU INFORMED SOCIAL EVENTS The Social Committee - A Path Forward The Social Committee has been instrumental in the formation of 4 actively functioning new clubs and the committee feels that they are on a sustainable path forward. To date the following clubs have had several events: the Dinner Club, Golf Club, the Tennis Club, and Local Outings. Additionally, the 1st Annual Picnic, suggested by Steve Crandall, and the Block Island excursion, spearheaded by Ed Lear, are being planned. This is attributed to the enthusiasm and commitment of those who have volunteered to coordinate the individual club activities. The original survey seems to indicate that there is enough diversified interest to increase the number of sustainable clubs, e.g., biking, hiking, and kayaking were activities with high interest, as well as art classes, movie discussion, card/game and volunteer opportunities activities. It is recognized that some clubs are seasonal while others are year round. An immediate goal would be to establish one additional seasonal activity and one additional year round activity The Social Committee will serve as an overarching administrative body that will help organize clubs, however, as with current clubs, we need volunteers who will offer to chair or co-chair a new club. This is an open invitation to all residents to consider serving as chair or co-chair in forming a new club from the above list or other activity where you have interest. Mike is a master at grilling and will delight the plates of all who attend. The hors d’oeuvres, side dishes, salads and desserts will be prepared by the participants and will provided a luscious menu in a fun loving, communal setting. All are invited to participate. The club offers an opportunity for neighbors to break bread in an inexpensive, intimate, relaxed environment. Menu Planning Guidelines The Dinner Club host assigns a theme to each dinner. Time Frame will generally be the 3rd Thursday of each month. Host provides the entrée and wine in accordance with theme. Prior to a scheduled dinner date, members who have expressed interest to attend will be asked by the host to provide hors d’oeuvres, side dishes, or dessert in accordance with the theme. Host may opt to provide the recipes to accompany the entree or request the person to choose a favorite recipe for their portion of the meal, in accordance with the theme. The total cost of the meal, including beverages, is equally divided and shared by participants. In the event there are a greater number of participants than can be accommodated in one home, multiple hosts may be needed for the same event. Participants will be randomly assigned to a host house. If you are interested in participating in the remaining golf outing and have not already done so, please contact Paul asap. Golfers wishing to participate, who have not sent an RSVP, can still join by submitting an RSVP via email to pmcofoni@hotmail.com or call 860-989-4901 at least 7 days prior to the events. The tee times will be emailed to all participants 5 days in advance along with foursome groupings. 4 WCCA Golf Outings A subcommittee for Golf Outings has been formed. Members of the WCCA Golf Outing Subcommittee include: Diane Partenza – Co Chair, Paul Cofoni – Co Chair, Mark Gauvain, Bill White and Steve Crandall. Others are welcome to join the committee; let the Paul know if you are interested. Next and Final Golf Outing Planned for 2015 Based on recent committee survey results of interested residents and follow-up with local public and private golf courses, the following outing is planned. Stonington Country Club – September 17th On August 9th three foursomes gathered at Meadowbrook Golf Course on a beautiful Summer afternoon. Thanks to Steve Crandall for arranging the event. The $60 cash prize was awarded to Steve's three some, who had the lowest net scores. We all enjoyed a post round beverage on the patio overlooking the course. The course was in excellent condition, and the vistas were special. We will hold our 4th and final WCCA golf outing on the morning of September 17th. The wellmaintained red mansard roof, large wraparound veranda, and distinctive cupola contribute to its beautifully authentic New England charm. The 10-acre promontory upon which the hotel sits creates a beloved feature of the hotel: the unbeatable view of the Atlantic Ocean and of Block Island’s rolling foothills. Block Island Excursion Are you are interested in going a trip to Block Island? The group would ferry over from Point Judith, which is a 55 minute trip, and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the Spring House www.springhousehotel.com. Take a look at the website. It is an old, charming inn with a specular view. It is about a mile from the ferry and you can either take a taxi or enjoy a nice walk. The time allocated gives us amply time to explore the area. We continue to be blessed with wonderful weather for these events. Thanks to all those who brought such delicious appetizers and desserts. The competition for bocce bragging rights was fierce, as nine teams qualified for the quarter finals. Team Westerly mashed the Meatballs and carved up team Lasagna to advance to the semifinals. Team Apollo rocketed past team Winners to also reach the semifinals. Team M**2 + Pwr defeated the Kettle Closers algebraically 7 to 2, and the Shina's defused the Bronx Bombers in a 7 to 5 match. In the semifinals team Westerly defeated team Apollo to advance to the finals, and team M**2 + Pwr edged past the Shinas to set up the finals between themselves and team Westerly. The finals were played just before curfew and M**2 + Pwr applied Newton's three laws of motion (inertia, Force=mass*acceleration, and equal and opposite forces) to overpower team Westerly, and give us new Champions. Our last bocce night of the season will be held on Saturday, September 5th at 6 PM. Trophies will be awarded to the first and second place teams. Away outings are defined as trips that require hired transportation for a full day tour or overnight stays with hotel accommodations. 1 0 The trips shown here are offered by the Westerly Senior Center. Interested WC residents should contact the Senior Center for details. The trips are organized by several different travel agencies.
