PAGE 14 Rockland County Entertainment Guide Did you know? Then known as “Bricktown,” Haverstraw, which produced much of the brick used to build up the island of Manhattan, was the site of a deadly landslide that took the lives of 19 people – some of whom were never found. In the early 20th century, Haverstraw was the home of more than 40 brick-making factories, shipping bricks made from the rich soil on the banks of the riverfront village down the Hudson River on barges to New York City. But the ever-increasing demand for more brick would be the booming village industry’s downfall. Late on the night of January 8, 1906, a large crevice broke open in the heart of the village, triggering a landslide that would swallow 21 buildings and sweep 19 people to the bottom of a 150-foot pit, buried under tons of soil that the bricks were made from. The anniversary of the Haverstraw landslide is commemorated every year in an annual ceremony sponsored by the Haverstraw Brick Museum. rocktourism.com PAGE 15 riot Hills ouse at Pat The clubh in Ston y Point. The famous Piermont Flywheel, located in the riverfront park at the foot of Ash Street in the heart of Piermont, was actually an integral part of the riverfront village’s industrial history, which began more than 100 years ago. The original flywheel powered the Piermont Paper Company in 1902 and continued to operate as part of a steam-driven electrical generator until 1980, when the factory, then owned by the Federal Paper Board, closed its doors forever. A snowy Hook Mountain in Nyack. When developers tore the factory down and tried to remove the flywheel, even taking a wrecking ball to it, it proved indestructible. So it was decided by village leaders and historians that the Flywheel would become a permanent part of Piermont’s downtown center. It was polished, sandblasted and made into a sculpture, where it stands today as a monument to Piermont’s industrial past. rocktourism.com PAGE 27 ent at rs’ Monum nue Soldie ues, Suffern. ve A n to g n in The Wash ington Ave and Wash Lafayette The histori the Revolu c ‘76 House, the site tionar of Major Joh y War trial of British n Andre, in Tappan. Steeped in history and the site of many pivotal moments in the foundation of the state and even the nation, Rockland County’s historic sites and landmarks serve as a living history lesson. Starting at the historic ‘76 House in Tappan, the oldest pub in the United States and the site of the Revolutionary War trial and imprisonment of British Major John Andre, to the Stony Point Battlefield, where General “Mad” Anthony Wayne earned his nickname, Rockland’s historical trail traces its deep and storied roots. From the Dutch settlers who discovered Rockland in 1675, to Haverstraw’s establishment as the brick-making capitol of the Hudson Valley in the 1800’s, which helped build up the island of Manhattan, Rockland County is a rich tapestry of New York State’s history and very foundation. Rockland County is known for being the site of the trial and imprisonment of British Major John Andre at Tappan’s ‘76 House during the Revolutionary War, but historians remember it as the place where the 13 colonies were formally acknowledged as a brand-new nation. America’s first president, George Washington, famously slept in Tappan’s historic DeWint House and planned many a Revolutionary War battle strategy there. But what many don’t know is that on May 5, 1783, General Washington welcomed British Commander Sir Guy Carleton to the DeWint House to discuss the terms of the peace treaty between Britain and the fledgling country. The Stony Point Battlefield. Two days later, Sir Guy received General Washington aboard the British vessel Perseverance, and fired the ship’s cannons in the King’s Navy’s first official salute to the red, white and blue flag of the new United States of America. rocktourism.com PAGE 33 Nyack’s La s entree at the Hudso an Bistro. n House in Nyack.
