Cold Spring Harbor Huntington Soccer Club Mission Statement The mission of the Cold Spring Harbor Huntington Soccer Club is to promote interest in the sport of soccer and to provide a positive experience for boys and girls of the community through athletic recreation in a structured soccer program. To accomplish its mission, the club provides soccer instruction for children ages 5‐19, and organizes teams and leagues for the participation of children of all ages, genders, and levels of ability. In 2011, Cold Spring Harbor Huntington Soccer Club celebrated its thirty‐fifth year of service to the youth of the community, growing from a few hundred to more than 1,100 boys and girls. Our programs are carried out through the efforts of more than 100 volunteers and with the cooperation of two school districts and the town of Huntington. The Arsenal is truly a community team as the boys attend 6 different schools. The boys worked hard and competed with some of the best teams in their age group. The team came together with tremendous chemistry. I want to make a big‐shout out to everyone who made it happen: The big boots of Jake (Tank), Zach Ubertini and Andreas and who could launch a threat on goal from anywhere. The fancy footwork and ball control of Gerard, Andy, Zach M, Ben F, Nolan, Mathew and my own Ben C, leading to some breath taking runs at net. The energy and tenacious grit of Sam, Max, Aiden and Alex that interrupted opposing hopes and created wildly unpredictable scoring opportunities. We should never underestimate the value of our unyielding defensive wall– Joseph, Brendan, Quinn, Tyler, and their leader John (I know some of you wanted more time on offense, but your performance on D was huge for the team). And let’s not forget the Drama in the Net – our volunteer goalkeepers Ben F, Gerard and Ben C – why just pick up the ball when a hair‐raising leap and dive is available? It was my first time coaching a team. I had a great time, but it wouldn’t have gone half as well without our trainer Han Park and our assistant coach Mike McGinnis – so a big thanks to them. Coaches: Anne DuBosque ♦Bob Tacopina The calendar year 2011 saw some ups and downs for the Comets. The spring season saw another solid performance resulting in a 2nd place finish just one point off the division lead. We earned a 2nd consecutive promotion and advanced to Division 5. The competition in that group was an eye opener to say the least. It took us almost all season before we got our sea legs and the last two games were our best of the spring. We used the season as an opportunity to move players into different positions in order to give us greater flexibility in future seasons. We eagerly await the start of a new season and look forward to returning to our winning ways. As always special thanks go out to the Comets parents who transport, encourage, and support our players. The team had a strong Fall finishing with a record of 4‐3‐2 and beating or tying teams that had beaten us in previous seasons. The Division was packed with former premier and select teams and games were played at an exceptionally high level. Chris Schlesinger and I are proud of these boys and their passion for soccer. Importantly, we were just informed that the Dragons won the Sportsmanship Award for the Fall 2011. This award is significant because the boys are mature and poised including when the other team is not portraying good behavior. We saw 2 opposing coaches receive red cards in the fall. The boys practice hard and we’ve partnered with a strong Coastal trainer, Justin Thomson, who will continue to help the boys improve. The team is playing in the Coastal Winter Session II. Chris and I would like to thank the parents who are always looking to assist including attending practices, organizing the boys and generally make our coaching responsibilities significantly easier. After a slow start and losing the first two games of the season, the Dynamite Dribblers bounced back admirably and remained unbeaten in the last 8 games, ending the season with an impressive W‐4, L‐2, D‐4 record. The Dynamite Dribblers have been together for just over a year now and they have come a long way, starting off with an impressive run in the Intramural’s in Fall 2010 and leap frogging to the Travel League during the spring. They seem to be getting better with each outing and have matured into a well‐oiled unit where each girl knows her role. The spirit, camaraderie and togetherness is best exemplified by the fact that four of the players were offered to move up to a team ranked higher, but they refused the promotion and instead decided to remain with Dynamite Dribblers. With each girl knowing her role, the forwards were led by Maire Brown who made it a habit to score in almost every game. She was ably supported by Mary Carbone in the center and Aina Khan, Brooke Mohr and Madelaine Emsden along the wings. Each of these girls contributed towards the 23 goals scored during the season. The forwards were well supported by the midfielders, Lily Bailenson, Brooke Goldsmith, Kelly Gallagher and Gracie Marker. All four girls helped create opportunities for the offense and supported the defense quite well. The defense was led by the ever reliable Christiana De Luca, who tirelessly ensured that the opposition offense was kept at bay. Her right and left wingers, Julia Burnbaum, Kelly Warren and Lauren Glupe kept repulsing attacks and formed a tough defensive line up that was not easy to crack. Last but not the least, the goal was tended by Julia Grossman and she did a remarkable job in thwarting multiple attacks and without her skills and never say die attitude, we would not have maintained the eight game unbeaten streak. We look forward to another exciting season in the spring of 2012. The team is blessed to have Nicole Brunder as a trainer, whom the girls love. Thanks to Russ Mohr, Brett Emsden and Rob Bailenson for stepping up to help with practice sessions. place finish out of 21 teams. The three ties tied the team record for ties set by the 1994 team (coached by Long Island Jr. Soccer League Hall of Famer Dan “Skippy” Skippleman). All players were exceptional, especially Connor Cassidy, Kevin Lynch, Anton de Lesseps, Dean Toomey, Tommy Rodgers, Nat Amato, The Eds (Daubel & Brambil), The Chrises (Mormile and Piazza), Thomas Pandolfi, John Healy, Nicholas Carino, James Treanor, Connor Cassidy (again), Elijah Gordon, and Erik Zetterstrom (last name in the Cold Spring Harbor‐Huntington Soccer League alphabetical roster and darned proud of it). Little Scottie McManus unfortunately was dismissed from the team when he got caught sneaking into the Harry Potter ride on the team’s trip to Universal Orlando, but must be recognized nevertheless. And who could forget the highlight of the season – the coaching clinic by Mia Hamm, arranged by our legendary trainer Dave McCarthy who teamed with Hamm on the 2002 co‐ed World Cup team. The team was richly and deservedly rewarded with season‐ending endorsement deals from Nike, Gatorade, The Lite Choice, and DaRaimo’s Pizza, worth a reported $1.3 million dollars (according to the Long Island Press), and were special guests on its own float at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City this past November. Some Cold Spring Harbor residents were even stunned (but not quite startled) when they caught the team performing their a capella version of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” on the season finale of “Glee”, which gave the Fox show its highest ratings in the past seven years. Come catch Dynamite fever at the Cold Spring Harbor Library at 2:00pm on March 13th when the team will be autographing the coffee table book highlighting its season: “Soccer is a Kick in the Grass” (ESPNU Press). The Dynamite earned the right to move up to the fierce yet refined Division 2 this spring and expect to be playing in tournaments in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Akron, Ohio (but not at Disney World). We finished with a 5‐1‐2 record, substantially improved our skills and won the LIJ division Sportsmanship Award. Aside from our raw‐meat and potato chip diet, daily 4‐hour workouts and energy shakes made from cottage cheese, clam sauce and bacon, we owe our success to the hard work and dedication of our players and the support and patience of our enthusiastic parents. We then went on a five game losing streak that truly tested the girls. They all kept coming back for more and were committed to improving and refining their skills. Fortunately with lots of practice and help of a good trainer we were able to come together as a team. We were competitive in every game and the girls played with such spirit that we knew we would eventually pull it together. The goalkeeping and defense became cohesive units and eventually the offense learned that “you can’t score if you don’t shoot”. A saying that they are probably sick of hearing after the thousands of times it has been yelled to them from the sidelines. We did go out in style winning 2 of our last 3 games‐ proof that hard work and dedication pays off in the end. We look forward to working as a team and to the challenges this spring season will bring. This team has spirit, drive and dedication‐ always striving to win and learning from losses. We can’t mention the Firecrackers without mentioning the amazing support and energy of our parents and families. We are so lucky to have the best cheering section in the world! From the coffee and bagels on those early mornings on the field to the constant encouragement of our daughters, we are truly a lucky bunch. We cannot wait to get back on the field and ramp up our energy for a great spring season. With only a few girls returning from last year and a mostly new and younger group of players, there was a lot of team building and skill learning going on – and it was a lot of fun! The new players brought with them a lot of enthusiasm and energy, while the few veteran players shared their experience and knowledge of the game with their new teammates. It took a few games into the season before the girls began to meld into the strong team they were to become. Whereas we lost games by a large margin early on, the girls’ hard work and enthusiasm paid off as the season progressed and we found ourselves in every game, ending many games within one goal of our opponents. It was very gratifying as a coach to watch these girls improve their individual skills, discover their strength at new positions on the field, and come together as a team. I have no doubt that the spring season will be one of continued growth and fun for all the players of Team Flash! Coach: Ken Katovitz We concluded another exciting season with an impressive 3‐1 win over Commack. We had our moments this season having provided the top team in the division, Elwood, with its only loss and battling the second and third place teams down to the wire‐ only to lose both games 2‐1. While our overall record of 4‐5 was not indicative of our ability, it also had little to do with the “growth” that took place from beginning to end. Under our trainer, Dave McCarthy, the girls enhanced their skill level, understanding and renewed their appreciation for the game. Both Kenny and I have been coaches with this team since the inception and we couldn’t be prouder of the overall effort that our team put on the field each Sunday. It may not be pretty at times, but each opponent knows that are in for a battle!! We look forward to seeing the team perform in the spring season and perhaps down in Hershey this year. Finally, just a note to all of the younger teams and their respective coaches, take the time to enjoy the time you spend with the kids on your team. What our team has developed over the years‐ the friendships made, the effort put in and the laughter had cannot be repeated‐ the cliché “it goes too quickly” is an understatement and often taken for granted. The girls continued to compete at the highest level of competition in the 1A division and managed to stay in the middle of the pack. All of these talented athletes were playing junior high and high school sports along with the rigorous soccer schedule this fall season. Needless to say a seven‐ day a week athletic schedule had taken a toll on the girls physically and have enjoyed a much needed break this winter. Last year we spent the end of the Spring season preparing for our new trainer Dave Mcarthy. We celebrated our end of the year party managing a fund raising garage sale on a hot day in June. We made a few bucks and had many laughs too! Since Dave has taken over he has brought so much life and desire to an already determined group. The st
girls placed 1 in the Northport Columbus day Tournament and ended the fall season with a 3‐4‐2 record. The heat has continued to show leadership qualities on and off the field. Community service has been a part of our team from the beginning. The Heat enjoyed participating in the ELVES charity. They realize that they can make a difference when helping others. As the spring season approaches we are preparing for another difficult season in D1 but are looking forward to embracing the challenge! Good luck to all this season!
HURRICANES U‐10 Girls Paris Abbott Kathryn DiMaio Sarah DiMaio Taylor Donaldson Alison Gellman Lauren Hamer Jacqueline Hynes Maria Hudson Julia Khanaminia Isabella Iglesias Isabella Neira Allison Petrozzo Hannah Terry Kristin Terry Coach: Tom Hynes The GU10 Hurricanes began their journey together in a tropical storm last August, true to their name, and they’ve been blowing away their fans and rivals ever since. The Hurricanes found themselves in a competitive division with several teams that started travel in the previous year, and had to quickly make up for lost ground. Once our players realized that they all couldn’t be center forward, we began the wonderful process of creating a team. The girls worked very hard to play a bigger and faster game, and their coaches and parents could not be more proud of the way they took up the challenge. They survived the early part of their schedule against more experienced teams, having suffered only one loss in these games. The Hurricanes soon found their rhythm towards the end of the season, decisively defeating a team that was ahead of us in the standings all season long, and ultimately taking second place from them. Our team would not suffer another loss until the last game of the season against a very tough, undefeated team. The Hurricanes are looking ahead with great anticipation for another fun season in competing in the LI Cup and in the Second Division this Spring, which will include a few promising rematches from this Fall. The year was marked by a lot of changes ‐ Bigger fields, more players and a lot of new faces. Our girls moved to a full‐sided field playing in an 11 v. 11 format for the first time. Our fields were huge! Many of our games were played on fields the same size as the ones that our US Women’s Olympic soccer team play on. I knew we would be challenged when during our first game on the big field just as she was about to take a corner kick, one of our players announced to anyone in earshot “I can’t even see the goal”... After we got over the initial shock we made adjustments and played like a team. One of the highlights of our season was the day we played against one of our older club teams during one of our open weeks. We had an open bye week and our girls demanded that I round up a game. They would not stand idle regardless of what the schedule read. I received several menacing phone calls that I can only assume were from my more aggressive players. Luckily for me, we were able to find an opponent and it was the first game where our girls played like a well oiled engine. Everyone contributed and everyone had fun. The toughest part of our season was the traveling. It seems the scheduling gods were against us this season. We had back to back road games to far off places like East Islip (twice) and the exotic New England town of Mattituck . It seemed like these games were always scheduled at 8:00AM. A few families turned it into a roadtrip and stayed over in Mattituck the night before the game. Our girls took it all in stride and played their hearts out all, made new friends along the way and laughed until they almost cried. A successful season? Most definitely! These girls continue to work hard, practice hard, and give it all they've got every game and tournament! Our fall season started August 1st, with our twice weekly practices. Our August practices culminated with a weeklong SUSA camp created just for our GU12s. From there, the Harbors went on to compete in the HBC Labor Day tournament, finishing 3rd in a very competitive bracket. Having just fell short of winning their division in the spring, the Harbors knew they had their work cut out for them beginning in September. Every game was close, and the Harbors became better at playing under pressure. Mid season, we honed our skills at the Northport Cow Harbor Columbus Day Tournament, again finishing 3rd against higher division teams. We finished the season winning our division with a 6 ‐ 1 ‐ 2 record, with just two goals scored against us all season! Wow! Of course, the season wasn't all about our hard work. We had our team bbqs and pool parties, thanks to some gracious hosts, and we lived to tell about visiting Coach Bill Lee's house at Halloween! CB – Dev Bhatia and Timothy Low, always new how to disarm the enemy during attacks by outrunning and outthinking the opponent, they new where to place the ball and mark the attacking players. SD – Charles Willis, David Marasciullo, Stefan Brechter and Nicholas Romanoff, brought speed to the sides of our defensive line; by keeping to the side, they passed well, and disarmed our attackers out of play. DMF – Mathew Beroza and Casey DiGiacomo played to destroy the plays made by the organizers of the other team and, afterward, pass the ball to the organizers of their own team. OMF – Sean Burns, Josh Yanuck, Phillip Wideska, Trevor Bacchi, Ryan Mclaughlin and Christian Mannino, had a challenging season on the field with our key player Christian Mannino on our injured list, and resting for his return next season! This group is what I call the Brains of the team, they had strong passing, shooting, and dribbling, played calm at every game and assisted our forwards on the attacks. CF/FW – Taigue Anna, Nicholas Basso, Conner Chase are the players on the team who kept our number on the board, even with the struggles they had with the unforgiving goalposts they kept the team alive. The U10 Mustangs are one of them. The Mustangs are twelve boys full of energy and enthusiasm ready to play The Beautiful Game. During their first season this past fall, they had a stellar debut in which they delivered an undefeated season. This bunch of very animated boys learned new balls skills and game strategies very quickly. Their dynamics on the field are a delight to watch and they displayed a much leveled presence during the games. In defense, midfield and offense, the Mustangs demonstrated skill, intelligence, and plenty of exciting plays and goals. We all are very much looking forward to see the many goals and saves that this team will produce in the years to come. Go Mustangs! Our 13 lucky girls came from different schools and neighborhoods, but ended up a solid soccer family. Coach Benjamin, Coach Vegna and trainer Megan saw early on that we had a lot of raw talent. We had tons of fun practicing on the new Breezy Park turf, especially when Nick Handby and Charley Pepperell introduced us to “doctor, doctor,” “ant’s nests” and other fun “football” drills. All the hard work paid off as we faced some stiff competition in our league matches. Our record of 2 wins and 7 losses wasn’t what we had hoped for, but we had several close games. Our league record of 5 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties earned the team a third place finish in the Girls U13 Division 3. Our record was not truly reflective of our accomplishments. We were in every game and made our opponents work every minute they were on the field. Our relentless defense continued to be strong. This combined team effort resulted in giving up only 4 goals all season. Our hard work and constant pressure on offense kept opposing teams on the defensive. We had a breakout game scoring 6 goals in the last game of the season and will hopefully continue to find the back of the net in the coming spring season. Some highlights from the fall include Team Prides’ domination and winning of the Northport Cow Harbor Columbus Day Tournament. Every member of the team contributed to the achievement and it was a pleasure to be on the sideline watching. Team Pride once again won the LIJSL & Modell’s Sporting Goods Sportsmanship Award. Our team formed this past summer and after only a few practices we entered the HBC Labor Day Tournament. In a hard fought final game against Brentwood, we earned a 2‐2 tie and a first place finish in the division. What a way to kick off our travel soccer experience! Our first LIJSL season was unbelievably exciting and competitive. In a division with tough competition, we finished the season with a record of 4‐4‐1. Of the 9 games played, 6 were decided by 1 goal or less. Mid‐season, we had a great experience in the Northport Columbus Day Tournament against some great competition. What was most memorable about this season was the growth of the boys. Their ability to handle defeat and bounce back from tough losses or deficits in games was something to admire. This toughness and resilience was shown in our final game, a rematch against the same Brentwood team we tied on Labor Day at HBC. After falling behind 3‐0 in the first half, the Red Bulls stormed back for a riveting 5‐4 comeback victory in front of the home crowd to capture 4th place in the division. Way to go boys! In the spring the team advanced to the semi finals of the LI CUP and lost a heartbreaker in PKs after regulation and 2 overtime periods. We continue to encourage a fun atmosphere and allow the boys to experiment with different formations and positions. The key to the team’s success is that they play as a team and play with passion. This Fall, the boys entered sophomore year and several of our players contributed to their respective school’s varsity programs. At this age, there is plenty of competing activities and boys must balance academics, school soccer, music, and family time. The team is great combination of local schools including Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington, Friends Academy, St. Anthony's and Chaminade. We continue to receive requests from outside players who want to join the team which is a credit to the boys and their success. Left with only seven of its original team members and no coach, the girls welcomed a new coach and the addition of six new teammates. Making these Shooting Stars a team in transition. With summer schedules almost as hectic as the fall, the Shooting Stars had limited time to get together and hone the skills needed to tackle an upcoming season let alone getting to know each other on the field. Remarkably once together these girls demonstrated the poise of a team who had already played a season together, showing the potential of what could come. Coming out blazing hot, the Shooting Stars were winners of 4 of their first 5 games. This was a season of tremendous growth both as players but more importantly as a team. Even though the Shooting Stars last game of the season ended in a tie, the girls displayed incredible hustle and the best passing of the season. Sometimes “Shooting “was just off, sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way, hitting the cross bar, countless posts or even crossing the goal line, this never deterred their attitude, sportsmanship or team spirit, they are “Stars”. Our practices were always filled with laughter mixed in with difficult trainings trying to advance their game. The girls had their heads in the game and knew what it took to perform on the field. They played a very physical schedule and their determination and selfless play lead to a terrific season. The seasons start was only topped by their finish, 2nd Place in their LIJS Division. WOW! What a great season. Lollipops for everyone! Under the coaching expertise of Susan Fare, and our trainer Keyes, our fourth grade girls came together like a well oiled machine. The girls might have started out as a last minute team, but ended with skills, determination, and best of all a new set of friends! Your devoted commitment to practice during the week was displayed in your level of play on the field every weekend. We had an awesome winning streak of five games which all the players, parents and coaches were very happy with. Unfortunately, we ran into some injuries and sickness but we remained strong, and ended the season with our heads held high. Most importantly, many new friendships were made. The team which started off unfamiliar became a solid unit at the end of the season. During the off season, Anthony and I have met to discuss the Spring season and we are both very excited to get started again. That combination has been the reason this team still plays the game with such a great attitude. Every player has always added to what they are and that is why regardless of the record they have always come back better the following season. The Strykers won their division this past fall, posting a 6‐0‐2 record. They stood up to every challenge as a team. As even a greater statement to their individual and team standards, they also were awarded the LIJ Sportsmanship award in the Spring 2011 season. The coaches Rob, Nancy and Gary would like to thank them for years of fun. We look forward to the next and last season this Spring and wish them all the best as they move on. We were moved up to Division 1 and faced some very experienced teams and a high level of competition. The girls handled the challenge exceedingly well and did it with a great attitude. The coaches and parents are very proud of the players and their development. One of my favorite moments on the field is when win or lose, our girls form a human tunnel and cheer the other team to run through. It brings a smile to my face every time. Coach Sean summed up our season well in stating: The Storm had a tremendous season of growth and development. Upon entering the travel league in the fall of 2010, they dominated their division to such a point that they won each of their games and had only one goal scored on them for the entire season. Thereafter, the girls were catapulted to Division One and were quickly faced with a very steep learning curve. Although they struggled at first with the significantly higher level of play than they had been used to, the girls kept their heads up the entire time and are now competing quite well at this level. Indeed, they played tremendous soccer the second half of the season. And throughout the learning process, there have been countless numbers of smiles. We're having fun and will continue to do so. In addition to the regular season, the girls competed well in the Commack, HBC and the Turkey Bowl Charity tournament. Currently, The Storm is playing in the Coindre Hall indoor league and having a blast. I want to thank Mike and Sean for helping coach, Jeanine our treasurer, Jenn our manager and Dave our favorite trainer. I also want to thank the parents for all their support and the girls who are a wonderful bunch of kids and a pleasure to coach. More than half of the 18 players had not previously played together and the coaches were new to most of the players. As a result, the Titans spent most of the fall season becoming acquainted with the styles of the other players and the coaches. Despite the prolonged feeling out period, the team made steady progress as girls become more acquainted with each other and positions and formations were tweaked to take advantage of the skill sets of the girls. Unfortunately, we were beset by season‐ending injuries to 4 players during the course of the year coupled with minor injuries that resulted in many player games lost. The loss of players hampered not only our game performance, but our ability to fully practice. The Titans battled through this adversity and showed their grit, many times playing with 2 or less substitutions including one game with no substitutions, to achieve one tie and many close games. Despite the disappointing record, the season had many highlights including strong defensive play, spectacular saves, and, in the last game, when we finally found the back of the net with a great corner kick and a little bit of a luck. The Titans especially enjoyed our practice regiment that included, at times, the relay race obstacle course and coaches vs. girls scrimmages. The Titans are looking forward to the 2012 Spring Season when the healthier, more experienced Titans will be able demonstrate the team’s full potential. After a team meeting, it became clear all wanted to participate in some way to help the Tornadoes have a fantastic season. Shortly after the Team meeting came the initial Player Assessment Practice, where most of the boys had a chance to get to meet each other (some for the first time.) It was a bit more work than the boys expected, but they demonstrated their enthusiasm at every challenge! Voluntary summer practice was where many formed stronger bonds with one another, not to mention made GREAT improvements. Boy was it HOT, thank goodness for LEMONADE! September came quickly and with it came additional practices with our Trainer Andy (THANKS ANDY!). Along with this came the excitement of beginning the Season with the Tornadoes’ first game! The Tornadoes managed a Victory in game one, though there was clearly work still needed on a few fronts. As October arrived, the Tornadoes stood 1‐1 after suffering a 1:2 loss to the Lindy Roadrunners. While the loss was somewhat disheartening, the boys found motivation in it and realized (maybe more acutely) the areas that needed improvement. They proved their resilience and commitment as the next game was against the very same Roadrunner team. This time the Tornadoes prevailed in a masterfully well played game! Finally, as November arrived, the Tornadoes had amassed a very respectable record of 5‐1. Their hard work was clearly paying off! The boys had come together as a team and trusted themselves and their teammates more and more. What a joy for all to witness! After playing some of their better Soccer of the Season in their final game victory, the Tornadoes finished atop their division with an impressive 8‐1‐1 record. This was not the only reason to celebrate, however: The Friendships, Camaraderie, Trust, and Skills that were amassed during this wonderful season for the Tornadoes were equally worth celebrating. So a couple of Six Foot Subs seemed to be in order, particularly as it had become apparent the boys expected nothing less from Doon! The Tornadoes especially thank Doon, Gary, Kieran, Connie, Scott, Todd and Peter for their Assistance at practices and during games: It would not have been the same without your great contributions! Also, thanks to all the Tornado Parents for getting the boys to and from practices/games, and being such tremendous supporters of their Soccer. So, on we go to the Spring Season and a new league; we can only hope to have nearly as much FUN, not to mention the occasion or two to unleash the now famous Victory Wave! The year began with the Twisters making their annual trek to The Soccer Coliseum in Teaneck, NJ for tournaments in the Armory. The girls kicked off the spring by notching their second Waldbaum’s Cup victory, but a depleted roster took its toll, racking up tough losses early in the year before the girls roared back, closing the season with a winning streak. The season highlight occurred Memorial Weekend, when the girls ventured to Virginia for the first time to compete in the Virginian Tournament. Competing up a year in the Premier Gold bracket, the girls advanced to the semifinals against teams from Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey before suffering a heartbreaking 1‐0 in the semifinal. Off the field, players and parents ran amok in Wegman’s between games, feasting on the myriad food stations throughout the store. Our fall season th launched in mid‐August with our two‐week “boot camp,” and culminated with our 6
annual Beach Soccer Tournament and Picnic at Jones Beach. Hurricane Irene washed away the East Meadow Tournament, but the girls tore through their fall schedule with a vengeance, going undefeated and outscoring the opposition by a combined 29‐4. Capping the league season was a tough, winning performance in the finale, as a third of the team was in upstate New York at the state high school finals and Mimi Grassi inspired everyone with a gritty performance in goal. Post‐season, the girls competed in two college showcase tournaments, the National Elite Soccer Showcase in the Championship division and the Massapequa Winter College Showcase in the Elite division, where the girls reached the semifinals before losing to Seacoast United (NH) Phantoms on a goal with less than 30 seconds remaining. As we head toward spring, the Twisters are looking forward competing in Division 1 and to traveling out of state Memorial Day Weekend to showcase their talents for college. First, most of the players were greeting a new head coach as the reins were passed from Jim Schubauer to Mark Hamer. Second, the team was integrating seven new players to the team. Finally, the team was moved up to division 1 based upon its successful spring 2011 season. Despite these challenges, we organized in August and prepared for the season ahead. To add to our challenges, we were greeted by tropical storm Irene the weekend before Labor Day canceling the East Meadow tournament and postponing the start of our Fall campaign. As the regular season started, the team experienced predictable adversity as we learned to play soccer as a team. The players needed to relearn how to play with each other. They needed to gain their understanding of their role on the team. Most importantly, they needed to trust each other and respect the team. As the season progressed and losses mounted, the players’ enthusiasm dampened. It is through adversity that successful teams persevere and true character emerges. The players needed to rely on and support each other. The Vipers participated in a Columbus Day tournament in Brooklyn. The competition was fierce. The Vipers played tough and well. The tournament was the right launching pad for us to mount a competitive second half to our season. The team progressed playing much better in the remainder of the season. Each player should be proud of their perseverance and determination to make the team better. The quality of the soccer improved from week to week. As we start our winter indoor season and head into the spring campaign, the Vipers will start with a fresh outlook to build themselves into division champions. The Viper offensive attack is led by Kevin Gulizio, Bobby Cerrito, Christopher Shea and Tony Kasper. The midfield is controlled by Matthew Gelb, Dan Battillo, Chris Cordeiro, Griffon Kugler and Owen Skrodanes. The defense is patrolled by Mark Rafuse, William Heins, JD Patti, Spencer Stapleton, Colin Hamer, and Matt Boccardo. Our goalie play was led by Matt Tomlinson and Alex Marino. We have a talented group of boys and are looking forward to Spring 2012. GO VIPERS!!!
