In his first two seasons, Bradbury has guided the program to 28 wins and two appearances in the OVC Tournament. Before MSU, Bradbury had spent the last five seasons as the top assistant coach at Xavier University. He has also had coaching assignments at University of Cincinnati, East Tennessee State, Virginia Commonwealth and his alma mater, Chattanooga. Bradbury has become known as a gifted recruiter, and has landed several top 25 recruiting classes while at Xavier and Cincinnati. His first MSU signing class ranked 55th in the nation. He signed the nation’s top-ranked player at Xavier in 2006-07. While at UC, he signed three top 25 classes. In each of his last ten seasons as an assistant coach, his teams qualified for postseason play. In all, 12 of the 17 teams he has been involved with have made postseason appearances, and nearly every team has posted a .500 record or better. Bradbury spent five seasons at Xavier, and all five resulted in postseason appearances, including two NCAA tournament berths. In his first season at Xavier, in 2002-03, the Musketeers went 20-10 overall and advanced the NCAA Tournament first round after posting a 12-19 record the season before. In 200607, Bradbury helped lead XU to a 26-8 record and another NCAA Tournament berth. In between, his teams made three consecutive WNIT appearances, including a quarterfinal game in 2004-05. In his five seasons, Xavier was 106-50 (.679 winning percentage). Prior to his time at Xavier, Bradbury was a top assistant coach and the primary recruiter for cross-town school Cincinnati for six years, where he helped the Bearcats to two NCAA Tournament berths and a 127-57 record (.690 winning percentage). His UC career culminated in the 2001-02 team going 27-5 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round. He also helped mentor the 1998-99 team to a 22-9 record and a firstround NCAA game. Bradbury’s time at UC resulted in three WNIT appearances as well. Bradbury went to Cincinnati after one season at VCU and one at East Tennessee State. At ETSU, his 1994-95 team took sixth place in the WNIT and compiled a 21-9 record. His coaching career began at Chattanooga, where he graduated in 1993 with a degree in recreation. He spent the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons as a student assistant coach before his first full-time assistant coaching assignment came in 1993-94. The 1991-92 UTC team also advanced to the NCAA Tournament first round. Bradbury and his wife Christy have a son, Alex (3). The newest Eagles are: guard Allie Turner (Enon, Ohio/Greenon HS), guard Kayla Lamotte (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS), guard Tyler Ituen (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield HS) and power forward Lianna Innocent (Vandalia, Ohio/Butler HS). Turner, a 5-foot-5 guard, joins the MSU program with prolific offensive credentials. She averaged 29 points per game for Greenon High School last season, including a 40-point game. She was named First-Team All-Southwest District by the Dayton Daily News. “Allie is an outstanding player. She will bring a skill set that will let her play the one or two spot in our system,” said Bradbury. “Her ability to shoot from long range will help us stretch the defense.” Lamotte is a 5-foot-7 guard from Mason High School. She averaged nine points and six rebounds per game last season. “Kayla is an athletic guard who has great hands and an ability to get the ball to the basket as well as being a great defender,” said Bradbury. Ituen, a 5-foot-8 guard, comes to MSU from Whitfield High School in St. Louis. She scored 13 points per game and grabbed seven rebounds per outing last year as well as averaging three assists per game. “Tyler is a long and athletic guard who can play the one, two or three positions,” said Bradbury. “She can handle the ball and is a great shooter with deep range.” Innocent is a 6-foot-2 power forward from Butler High School in Vandalia, Ohio – in the Dayton metro area. She scored eight points and pulled in five rebounds per game last year. She also shot a very accurate 49 percent from the field and 81 percent at the free throw line. “Lianna is a strong power forward who is a great rebounder. Also, her ability to score around the basket and be a good defender should provide depth.” 2009-10 Morehead State Roster No. 00 1 2 5 12 20 21 22 24 25 32 42 -- -- Name Tiffanie Stephens Tiffany Hamilton Chynna Bozeman Ashar Harris Abby Steele Linda Dixon Kristin Raker Ashley Martin Deja Watson Courtney Lumpkin Connie Buchanan Stephanie Salyers Channing Hillman* Jayne Cox* Pos. MSU vs. Marshall | Dec. 18, 2009 | 2009-10 Game Notes | 2009-10 Team Notes Series Notes In one of the Eagles’ longest standing non-conference rivalries, MSU trails 21-19 in the series, which dates back to 1976-77. The teams have played continuously now for the last eight seasons and Marshall has won seven straight in the series to take the lead. The last MSU win came on Dec. 29, 2001 (80-68) in Morehead. Last season, Marshall won 56-51 in Huntington, and in 2007-08, the Herd won 83-79 in overtime in Morehead. MSU vs. The Mountain State Concord Davis and Elkins Glenville State Charleston West Virginia State WV Wesleyan Marshall Totals 3-0 2-0 1-1 10-5 2-0 1-0 19-21 38-27 Three For the Road Morehead State is currently riding a three-game winning streak in road games. One would think this isn’t such big news, but for MSU it’s only the second time for a three-game road winning streak since 2002-03 and just the third since all the way back in 1982-83. The longest road winning streak in school history is five in 1978-79. Start Me Up The Eagles’ 8-3 start in the first 11 games is the third best in the NCAA women’s basketball era (since 1981-82). If MSU wins today, the 9-3 start in the first 12 contests would tie for the second best 12-game start since 1981-82 (2001-02 team began 11-1). Back to Back Winning Seasons a Rarity Morehead State is striving to accomplish back-to-back winning seasons (above .500) for just the second time since 1987-88 and 1988-89. The 2001-02 team was 21-8 and the 2002-03 team was 16-12. MSU was 17-14 last season. Bozeman Named OVC Preseason Player of the Year Junior guard Chynna Bozeman was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year after earning First-Team All-OVC honors last year. She was the only returning player in the conference this season to have earned a postseason All-OVC award last year. Bozeman tied the MSU single season record with 95 three-pointers. She also scored 492 total points (15.9 pts/game) to rank among the OVC’s top five scorers. She is the top returning scorer in the OVC this season. Bozeman is leading the team and the OVC with 18.1 points per game so far in 2009-10. She has scored in double figures in 55 career games and 19 of her last 20 dating back to last season. Bozeman is also putting up great numbers elsewhere on the stat sheet, averaging 5.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Watch Out Tarah Chynna Bozeman has 187 career three-pointers in 71 career games and is now ranked third in career treys at the school. On the single season chart, she tied current graduate assistant coach Tarah Combs’ record of 95 treys last season. She needs only 47 more to tie Combs for second all time and just 62 to break the career record held by Olive Hill, Ky., native Kandi Brown. MSU Career Three-Point Chart 1. Kandi Brown 2. Chynna Joins the 1,000-Point Club Chynna Bozeman became the 19th member of the Morehead State 1,000-point club with a 24-point effort at UT Martin on Dec. 3. In a race that’s predicted to be close the Eagles earned 147 points, including nine first-place votes while, Austin Peay claimed six first-place votes and 146 points for second place. Tennessee State picked up 134 points and four first-place votes for a predicted third place finish as Eastern Illinois earned the final first-place nod and 111 points to finish fourth. Rounding out the poll are Jacksonville State (84 points), Murray State (79 points), Southeast Missouri (67 points), Tennessee Tech (58 points), Eastern Kentucky (54 points) and UT Martin (18 points). Morehead State is coming off a season in which it went 17-14 overall and 11-7 in the OVC to finish fourth. The Eagles made their third straight trip to the Conference tournament last year, falling to Austin Peay in the first round. Morehead State’s 17 wins last season were the fifth highest in school history and most since the 2000-01 season. Head coach Mike Bradburry enters his third year at the helm of the Eagles and returns four starters among 10 letterwinners from a year ago. Among the top returnees is junior guard Chynna Bozeman. The Reynoldsburg, Ohio, native was selected as the OVC Preseason Player of the Year after tying a singleseason school record with 95 3-pointers made in 2008-09. Bozeman also ranked among league leaders with 15.9 points per game. Bozeman, the preseason player of the year, is the only player to make the 2009-10 All-OVC Preseason team that earned all-conference accolades last season. She was a first-team selection last year after tallying 15.9 points per game. Joining Bozeman on the team are Tennessee State junior forward Jasmine Smith (Stone Mountain, Ga.) and redshirt senior forward Obiageli Okafor (Rolla, Mo.); Austin Peay junior guard/forward Ashley Herring and senior forward Nicole Jamen (Yaounde’ , Cameroon); Jacksonville State senior forward Jolie Efezokhae (Burford, Ga.) and sophomore post Brittany Wiley (Carollton, Ga.); Morehead State junior guard Tiffany Hamilton (Winter Haven, Fla.); Eastern Illinois senior guard Dominique Sims (Wichita Falls, Texas); and Eastern Kentucky junior forward Nadia Mossong (Bereledge, Luxembourg). Second Half Pressure Defense Leads MSU to 78-44 Win Over KCU MOREHEAD, Ky. - After a sluggish first half that saw the host Morehead State women’s basketball team leading only by 11 over NAIA foe Kentucky Christian Monday night, the Eagles turned up the full court pressure defense in the final 20 minutes, forcing 28 total turnovers for the game and pulling away for a 78-44 win over the Lady Knights. Morehead State, which won its fifth straight game for its longest winning streak since 200607, also improved to 8-3. The 11-game start is the third best since 1981-82 and the best since an 10-1 opening mark in 2001-02. The Eagles also improved to 5-1 at home and have now won eight of the last nine games. “The first half we were low on energy,” said head coach Mike Bradbury, whose team defeated a scrappy Detroit team Sunday afternoon. “In the second half our energy was better, and it really started about 10 minutes into the final half. We needed to do it (pressure defense) to get some energy going.” KCU did not hit a field goal in the final seven minutes and 20 seconds of the game. The Eagles led 36-25 at the half and it ballooned to 18 (53-35) with 11:59 left in the contest. From the 10:21 mark to the 4:10 mark, MSU outscored KCU 17-7 to lead 73-44. The largest lead was the final margin as senior Connie Buchanan hit her first career three-pointer in the last second. MSU forced 15 second half turnovers by the Lady Knights and turned that into 13 points. For the game, MSU had a 29-3 advantage in points via turnovers. The other area where MSU dominated was the post game where it outscored KCU 46-14 in the paint. Junior Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with 19 points and five steals as MSU collected a season high 18 swipes. Bozeman also tallied four assists and four of the Eagles’ seven three-pointers. Tiffanie Stephens netted 12 points and a career high seven rebounds. Senior Tiffany Hamilton scored in double figures for the eighth straight game with 12, and freshman Ashar Harris again led the rebounding effort with 12. Senior Deja Watson scored a career high nine points. MSU also passed efficiently with 21 assists. Sophomore Abby Steele dished out a career high six, while sophomore point guard Courtney Lumpkin handed out six helpers as well. The Eagles outscored KCU 42-19 in the second half, shooting 44 percent in the final half. For the game, MSU managed to hit 41 percent (32-of-78). The Eagles, who hit a school record 16 triples on Sunday, weren’t quite as accurate today with a 7-for-31 showing. KCU was led by 12 points from Kristin Hecht. Hecht and Abby Evans each had a team-best seven rebounds. The Lady Knights shot 33 percent for the game. Breakfast at Tiffany’s Senior guard Tiffany Hamilton also earned preseason recognition from the Ohio Valley Conference on the First-Team All-OVC squad. Hamilton ranked second on the team with 11.2 points per game in 2008-09 and drained 66 three-pointers to rank third in the OVC. This season, Hamilton ranks second on the team again with 12.0 points per game. She has reached double figures in eight consecutive games and scored a season high 20 points against Detroit on Dec. 13. Ashar Thing It is certainly a sure thing that opponents will have trouble containing freshman Ashar Harris this season. The Columbus, Ohio, native recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds in her first collegiate game at SIU Edwardsville on Nov. 13 and almost accomplished another double-double on Nov. 17 against Kentucky with eight points and nine rebounds. Then, in only her fourth collegiate game, she grabbed 22 rebounds against Lipscomb. In the early going, she ranks first in the OVC in overall rebounding (10.7 per game) and leads all OVC players in offensive rebounds (5.0 per game). Big-Time Game Ashar Harris’ 22-rebound game against Lipscomb ranked tied for the fifth highest rebound total in a single game in school history. The MSU record book doesn’t have an entry for offensive rebounds, but if it did, her 14 o-boards that day would certainly challenge for a single game record. The Curse No More Morehead State’s 58-51 win at Murray State on Dec. 5 was the Eagles’ first win in Murray’s Regional Special Events Center since 2003-04. Last season, the Eagles won at Southeast Missouri marking MSU’s first-ever women’s basketball victory at the Show Me Center. Crashing the Glass Morehead State led the OVC in rebounding last year and this year the Eagles are crashing the boards hard again. MSU is averaging 41.9 rebounds per game, which right now ranks first in the league. The Eagles rank second among all OVC teams in terms of offensive rebounds and the Eagles currently rank second in the league in rebounding margin with a plus-3.5 average. Tenacious D Morehead State currently leads the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring defense, giving up an average of just 57.5 points per game. Part of that is due to MSU’s field goal percentage defense (.376) which ranks second among all league teams. In the first two OVC games, the Eagles allowed only 46.5 points per game and held UT Martin and Murray State to a combined 31 percent shooting overall and just 21 percent from three-point range. The Eagles forced Kentucky Christian into a seven-minute, 30-second drought without a field goal to end the game. Triple Threat Morehead State led all NCAA and NAIA teams in three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted last year. The Eagles hit a school-record 264 treys (8.5 per game) and attempted an OVC record 822 from beyond the arc (26.5 per game). That figure broke the previous record of 683 by 139. The 264 was only three short of an OVC record as well. MSU has picked back up right where it left off last year as the Eagles have drained 114 three-pointers on 334 attempts. At this rate (30.3 attempts per game), MSU would break the record of 822 set last year and take 903 triples this year. In the last two years now, the Eagles are 16-1 when limiting teams under 60, and in the last three years, it’s a 23-6 mark. The Two-Minute Drill The Eagles have had the lead with two minutes to play eight times this year and all seven times they have held on to win the game. Shattering A Record When the Eagles attempted 49 three-pointers against Presbyterian on Nov. 20, it shattered the school and Ohio Valley Conference single game record of 41 (which ironically was also held by MSU against Bowling Green in 1999-00). The Eagles currently rank tied for first in the nation in three-balls attempted per game at 30.3. Shattering Another Record MSU hit 16 three-pointers on Dec. 16 against Detroit, breaking the previous school single game record of 15 set in 2007-08 against Jacksonville State. Steele the One Sophomore Abby Steele scored a career high 11 points in the win over Lipscomb on Nov. 21. She came off the bench and hit a trio of three-pointers in the first half. Abby then equaled her career high on Nov. 29 with 11 points off the bench against Longwood. She handed out a career high six assists against KCU on Dec. 14. Abby is averaging 4.4 points per game. Assisting Any Way She Can Sophomore point guard Courtney Lumpkin ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference with 4.7 assists per game. In the last seven games, she has dished out 35 helpers. Last season she was the first freshman to lead the team in assists (112) since Michelle Clemmons in 1999-00. En Fuego Sophomore Courtney Lumpkin caught fire from three-point range in the first half against UT Martin on Dec. 3. She drilled five of her seven triple attempts and had 15 points by the break. She finished with 17 points, which tied her career high. One-Hour “Martin”izing Sophomore guard Ashley Martin came off the bench to score a season high 16 points - all in the second half - against Winston-Salem State. In only 16 minutes, she hit 6 of 11 field goals and 4 of 6 from three-point range. Quality Minutes Senior forward Connie Buchanan came off the bench to provide a hugh boost against Longwood on Nov. 29. She scored a career high six points and grabbed a career best six rebounds while handing out two assists in 20 minutes. She is pulling down a career best 3.3 boards per game. Connie also hit her first career three-pointer against KCU on Dec. 14. s Quick Facts School Facts School: Morehead State University Location: Morehead, KY 40351 Mailing Address: 111 Playforth Place, AAC Room 156 Founded: 1887 Enrollment: 8,981 Nickname: Eagles Colors: Royal Blue and Gold Conference: Ohio Valley (NCAA Division I) Home Arena (capacity): Johnson Arena (6,500) President: Dr. Wayne D. Womens’ Basketball Gears Up for Season With 83-49 Win Over Kentucky State Eagles Hammer Pikeville in Exhibition Basketball Action Women’s Basketball Falls by Three at SIU Edwardsville MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State women’s basketball team outscored Kentucky State 48-22 in the second half of Saturday’s exhibition game as the Eagles pulled away for an 83-49 win over the Thorobreds at Johnson Arena. MOREHEAD, Ky. - Junior Chynna Bozeman scored 20 points, senior Tiffanie Stephens added 19, freshman Ashar Harris grabbed 15 rebounds, and the Morehead State women’s basketball team hit 14 three-pointers en route to an 89-52 win over the visiting Pikeville College Lady Bears in an exhibition game Sunday at Johnson Arena. EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Host SIU Edwardsville outscored the Morehead State women’s basketball team 37-29 in the second half Friday night and rallied past the Eagles 67-64 at the Vadalabene Center in both teams’ 2009-10 season opener. Overall, the Eagles did out-rebound the Cougars 47-46, but SIUE brought down 11 second half offensive rebounds and turned that into 11 second chance points. The Eagles committed 22 turnovers leading to 22 SIUE points. MSU led 35-30 at the half but was only able to shoot 28 percent overall in the final 20-minute period. Junior Chynna Bozeman led MSU with 13 points and also had eight rebounds and a team best three assists. Freshman Ashar Harris notched a double-double of 11 points and a team high 10 rebounds in her first collegiate game. Sophomore Abby Steele scored a career high nine points off the bench, and sophomore Ashley Martin grabbed 10 rebounds. The Eagles collected 23 offensive boards in the game. The Cougars were led by Ashley Bey with a game high 18 points. Raven Berry did some damage off the bench with 15 points, including 13 in the second half. She had a pair of three-point plays as well. Melia Duncan totaled 12. MSU grabbed an early 5-0 lead but that was quickly erased as the Cougars went on a 16-6 run to lead 16-11 with 14:04 left. MSU finally was able to re-gain its advantage at 29-28 after a Bozeman trey with 3:32 left in the opening half. Steele hit a jumper with 1:13 left that gave the Eagles their 35-30 lead at the intermission. The Cougars effectively held MSU at bay for the first nine minutes of the second half. The eagles managed just one field goal and were outscored 19-4 down to the 11:25 mark. At that point, the Cougars held their largest lead of the night at 10, 49-39. The Eagles trailed 54-46 with eight minutes left but were able to scratch their way back into contention. A Tiffanie Stephens three-ball with 3:47 left brought MSU to within 57-55. However, just as quickly as MSU thought it was within striking distance, SIUE ran the margin back out to 64-55 with 120 ticks left on the clock. Harris canned a short jumper, and Tiffany Hamilton delivered a trey to get the Eagles to within 64-60. Hamilton then drained another one from beyond the arc, and MSU trailed only 64-63 with 31 second remaining. Bey made one of two free throws to make it a 65-63 game. Steele then stole an inbounds pass and was fouled with 17 seconds left. She hit the first free toss but missed the second. Harris got the rebound, her 10th, but Bey stripped the ball away and made two free throws to settle the final margin. Bozeman launched a three-ball at the buzzer but fell short. Head coach Mike Bradbury received balanced production from his starters and bench as the bench scored 49 of the 83 points and no player had to see more than 23 minutes of action. Ohio Valley Conference preseason Player of the Year Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with 15 points, while freshman forward Ashar Harris registered a doubledouble of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Martin also dotted double figures in the point column with 10. After holding onto a 35-27 halftime advantage, MSU shot 52 percent (15-of-29) in the final 20 minutes while holding KSU to only 26 percent (7of-27). The Eagles also were extremely efficient at the free throw line on the night hitting 22-of-26 for 85 percent. Ball movement also proved to be a key factor as MSU was credited for 22 assists of 26 baskets and hit nine three-pointers. MSU also blocked nine shots. Kentucky State got 13 points each from Latrice Watkins and Stephanie Harper. The Eagles out-rebounded the ‘Breds 42-41. Deja Watson pulled down seven for the Eagles, while Tiffany Hamilton tallied six boards. Abby Steele topped the assist leaderboard with five. MSU led 17-7 at the 10:15 mark of the first half after a Hamilton three-pointer, but the Thorobreds cut into the lead with a 12-5 run. At 5:15 left in the opening half, MSU led 22-17. Bozeman, Martin and Tiffanie Stephens drained treys in the next two minutes to push the advantage out to 33-19. The Eagles led 35-27 the the break. A 16-6 run to start the final half ballooned the martin out to 20 (53-33) and from then on it only got larger. From the 15:34 mark to the 3:53 mark, MSU limited KSU to just two successful field goals. The largest lead was 36 on four occasions. “I thought we showed improvement in our transition game and our rebounding and that’s what we have been working on this week,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “Tiffanie Stephens had a really solid game today, and Ashar Harris is going to be a great addition this year for rebounding.” Stephens scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half as the Eagles outscored the Lady Bears 49-30 after taking a 40-22 halftime lead. She also pulled down seven rebounds. Harris had eight boards by the break and collected seven more in the final 20 minute period. She had seven offensive rebounds today as well. Bozeman went 5-for-9 from threepoint range for her team high 20 points. Tiffany Hamilton also reached double figures with 13 points. The Eagles were 14-of-36 from three-point territory. MSU led the nation in most treys made and attempted last season. Overall, the Eagles shot 44 percent (33-for-75) from the field, including 9-for12 from the free throw line, and out-rebounded Pikeville 48-32. The Eagles also tallied 22 assists and had 18 steals off 26 Pikeville mistakes. That turned into 34 points off turnovers for MSU as they also held a 25-5 advantage in second-chance points. Twenty offensive rebounds helped that stat line. Pikevile was led by 15 points and five rebounds from Whitney Compton. The Eagles darted out to a 20-9 lead in the first nine minutes and led by as much as 23 (37-14) with 1:58 remaining in the opening half. The Eagles held the Lady Bears to 30 percent shooting in the first half. The second half was much of the same as the Eagles built as much as a 38-point lead (85-47). MSU hit seven three-pointers in the first half and equaled that in the final half. MSU fell to 0-2, while UK remained unblemished at 3-0. “We really played with a lot of enthusiasm, and I think that is something we can build on with our effort and execution,” head coach Mike Bradbury said. “I am proud of our team. We had a rough couple of days of practice this week, but we really played hard tonight. This game will definitely help our confidence.” Bozeman had a tough night from the floor (6-of-21) but still managed to reach double figures for the 45th time in her career. UK got an 18-point night from A’dia Mathies, and Victoria Dunlap added 12 points and 16 rebounds. The Eagles held Dunlap 16 points below her season average though. Amber Smith added 15 points, while Amani Franklin totaled eight points and 12 rebounds. The game marked the return of former MSU head coach Matthew Mitchell, who led the Eagles for two seasons before returning to UK for his first head coaching gig. The Wildcats jumped on top quickly 8-0 less than two minutes into the contest before Ashar Harris stopped the run with a rebound and putback. Courtney Lumpkin hit a runner in the lane, and Chynna Bozeman drilled a three-pointer to make it 8-7. Another Bozeman trey, and an Ashley Martin drive and lay-in gave MSU its first lead at 12-10 with 13:57 left in the first half. However, that would prove to be one of only two short-lived MSU advantages of the evening. After the Eagles got to within 20-19, UK scored eight of the next 10 to push ahead 28-21 with just more than five minutes left in the opening half. At the half, the Wildcats grabbed a 10-point lead, 37-27. The Eagles began the game 3-of-4 from three-point range but then missed their next nine treys. UK was 5-of-16 from beyond the arc in the first half. UK opened the second half on a 14-4 run to pull ahead 51-31 at the 15-minute mark. The Eagles couldn’t find the range in the early portion of the final 20 minutes as they began 1-for-9 from the field. MSU was able to stay within relative striking distance, but never was able to cut the deficit below 10 the rest of the way. UK never led by more than 17 either. A three-pointer by Tiffanie Stephens had the UK lead down to 55-45 with 7:50 left but that’s as close as MSU got. “We proved that we can come together and keep cutting [the lead] back down, so that brings our confidence level up, we have more trust in each other,” said Bozeman. Bozeman was MSU’s leading scorer, while Martin and Lumpkin reached the double digit column with 10 each. Harris grabbed a team best nine rebounds, and Deja Watson pulled down eight boards. The ‘Cats out-rebounded MSU 49-35. MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State women’s basketball team drained a season high 12 threepointers on a school and Ohio Valley Conference single game record 49 attempts and out-rebounded Presbyterian 53-36 Friday night as the Eagles topped the Blue Hose 62-51 in the first game of the MSU Invitational. MSU won its first game of 2009-10, improving to 1-2, while PC fell to 0-3. Junior guard Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with a season high 21 points, hitting five of the 12 long balls. Sophomore Courtney Lumpkin scored 10 points, dished out a team high seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman Ashar Harris, the OVC leader in offensive rebounds, grabbed six o-boards and finished with 10 overall rebounds. As a team, the Eagles posted 26 offensive rebounds and 27 defensive caroms and took 76 overall shots. Presbyterian only had one more overall shot attempt (50) than the Eagles did three-point shots. But, the offensive rebounding ultimately gave head coach Mike Bradbury’s team the opportunities it needed to hold off the Blue Hose. “We rebounded well and that won the game for us. They were giving us so many open shots and we just couldn’t hit. We didn’t shoot well, but we’ll take it and get back to work tonight. This is a tough stretch with three games in three days,” he said. The Eagles won despite shooting just 26 percent from the field and only 24 percent in the second half. MSU was 6-of-22 from long range in the first 20 minutes and hit 6-of-27 in the final half. Presbyterian was led by the 14 points from Amanda Mills. Dria David hauled in a team high seven rebounds. The Blue Hose shot 36 percent (18-of-50) for the game. MSU led 21-16 with 5:56 left in the first half but then went on a 12-5 run to end the half up 33-21. Tiffanie Stephens hit back-to-back treys to end the half. Tiffany Hamilton and Lumpkin drained triples to open the second half, and MSU opened up its largest lead at 18 (39-21). The Blue Hose cut the Eagle lead under double digits only once in the last 10:45. At that point, two Mariah Pietrowski free throws had the game down to eight (46-38). But, MSU went on a 9-2 run and pushed the advantage back out to 15 with 4:29 left. MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State freshman forward Ashar Harris pulled down 22 rebounds - the fifth best game total in school history - and the Eagles placed five players in double figures as MSU held off Lipscomb 62-53 Saturday at Johnson Arena on the second day of the MSU Invitational. The Eagles improved to 2-2 with the win, while Lipscomb dipped to 1-4. Harris, in only her fourth collegiate game, grabbed 14 offensive rebounds, eight defensive boards, and also completed her second career double-double with 11 points in 31 minutes. Senior Tiffany Hamilton led MSU with 14 points, Courtney Lumpkin totaled 13 points and a team high six assists, Sophomore Abby Steele scored a career high 11 points off the bench, and Chynna Bozeman reached double figures for the 47th time in her career with 10. The Eagles held a 53-33 rebounding edge and won for the second consecutive day shooting less than 30 percent for the game. “I am very happy with how hard we played, and we played really well defensively,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “ We rebounded the ball the best we have in the last three days. When you don’t shoot well, you still have to find a way to win and we have done that with rebounding. This is a team that is growing up and coming together to fight through adversity.” One night after setting a school and OVC record with 49 three-point attempts, the Eagles launched 32 from long range today, hitting eight. MSU leads the nation in three-pointers attempted per game. Lipscomb, meanwhile, drained 11 treys on 28 shots. Overall MSU shot just 28 percent (19-of-67) but grabbed 23 of their 53 rebounds off the offensive glass. Steele gave MSU a spark when it needed it in the first half, connecting on a trio of triples for nine points in the first 20 minutes. Lipscomb was led by Jenna Bartsokas with 14 points. She hit four of her five three-point attempts. The Eagles ran out to a 15-6 lead at the 14:30 mark of the first half, but the Lady Bisons would not go quietly. Lipscomb went on a 9-4 run and climbed back to within one (19-18) with 7:41 remaining in the opening half. The Eagles got it back out to a 26-18 lead after a Harris layup at the 4:03 point on the clock, but once again Lipscombn rallied. With 1:55 left, it was a 29-28 MSU lead. The Eagles led 33-28 at halftime. A three-pointer by Tiffany Hamilton with 13:08 left in the game pushed MSU’s lead to its largest at 44-31. Lipscomb trimmed its deficit back to six on six occasions but that was as close as the Eagles allowed the game to get. The win pushed MSU to 3-2 on the year and gave the Eagles their third straight victory in as many days in the MSU Invitational. In the first half, it was Hamilton who gave the Eagles a boost. She scored 13 of her 16 in the first 20 minutes, including four three-pointers. Martin came off the bench and tallied all 16 of hers via a 4-for-6 day from long range - all in the second half. Bozeman scored 10 in the first half and finished 7-of-8 from the free throw line. The Eagles were 12-of-26 from long range and forced 20 Lady Ram turnovers. “We played extremely well defensively today,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “ We have struggled shooting the ball lately, but it helps our confidence to be able to turn that around and shoot well today.” In fact, the Eagles held the Lady Rams to 14 first half points and only 23 percent field goal shooting. For the game, MSU forced four shot clock violations and limited WSSU to 28 percent overall from the floor, including a 3-for-18 defensive stand for shots from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Eagles shot a season high 42 percent (21-of-50) from the field. Sophomore point guard Courtney Lumpkin handed out a season high eight assists, and freshman Ashar Harris, the OVC’s leading rebounder, pulled down nine. Deja Watson hauled in seven boards. Renee Rector and Porsche Harrell topped the Lady Rams with 10 points each. Harrell also had team bests of five assists and three steals.. Vontisha Woods led all players with 11 rebounds. In the early going, MSU held a 7-6 lead at the 11:39 mark of the first half, but an 18-4 run pushed that out to 25-10 with 4:06 left. The largest lead came at the first half horn, 30-14. MSU led by as much as 24 on two occasions in the second period, and WSSU never cut the lead below 14. FARMVILLE, Va. - Senior forward Deja Watson hit an 18-foot jumper from the right corner to give the Morehead State women’s basketball team its first and only lead Saturday against Gardner-Webb and an apparent win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs, but a loose ball foul was whistled against MSU with 0.3 seconds left, and Courtney Epps hit two gametying free throws. In the overtime period, GWU outscored MSU 14-4 to pull out a 75-65 win in the Longwood Lancer Classic at Willett Hall. The Eagles fought back from double digits to tie the game on a Watson layup with 1:50 left and then took the lead on her jumper with 9.4 seconds left. Epps had the ball stripped near the end line as time wound down, but a foul was called on Chynna Bozeman and Epps hit both free tosses to send the game into overtime. Epps then scored nine of her 19 points in overtime. The Eagles fell to 3-3, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs improved to 5-1. Bozeman led the Eagles with a season high 23 points, including four of MSU’s 10 three-pointers. Senior Tiffany Hamilton scored a season high 18 points, hitting 4-of-7 from three-point range. Freshman forward Ashar Harris had her fourth double digit rebounding effort with a team and game high 13 boards. Dominique Hudson and Epps led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 19 points each. Margaret Roundtree posted 15 points, while Sandra Viatkute tallied a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles shot only 30 percent for the game, including being held to 24 percent in the first half when they trailed 30-24. In the second half, MSU improved to 41 percent. GWU’s inside presence proved to be tough for the Eagles as they were outscored 26-10 in the paint. MSU held its own on the boards, however, only being out-boarded 4340. With 6:19 remaining, the Eagles trailed 53-44, but two minutes later a Hamilton trey brought MSU back to within three at 57-54. LaTroya Pope hit a jumper to push the GWU margin to 59-54. Bozeman canned a three-pointer with 2:35 left, and after a missed three-pointer by Hudson, Watson got a feed on the block and managed to power up a layup to tie it at 59. The Eagles forced GWU to miss a shot with 41 seconds left. With the shot clock under 10, Watson got the ball on the right side from 18 feet and drilled the go-ahead shot. On the other end, it appeared the Eagles had the game put away after Epps lost the ball. Both Epps and Bozeman ended up on the floor, the ball went out of bounds, but the foul was called as time expired. FARMVILLE, Va. - Morehead State’s women’s basketball team shook off a slow start and came out of the locker room Sunday to outscore host Longwood 41-29 as the Eagles defeated the Lancers 68-62 in the Lancer Classic at Willett Hall. The Eagles trailed 33-27 at halftime, but shot 50 percent in the final half and rallied to improve to 4-3. The Eagles’ bench played a huge role in the comeback victory as sophomore guard Abby Steele played a career high 31 minutes, scored a career high 11 points and dished out a career best four assists. Junior Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with 17 points and also had six rebounds, and senior Tiffany Hamilton scored 12. Connie Buchanan came off the bench to net a career high six points and six rebounds while playing a career high 20 minutes. On the final stat sheet, MSU’s bench outscored the Lancer bench 26-6. “They (our kids) showed a lot of character and a lot of heart. In the first half we weren’t any good, but in the second half we decided we were going to get the right people in the game. Connie (Buchanan) and Abby (Steele) gave us great minutes. We played some people long stretches without a break, but overall it was a great second half. We also would not have won this game without Courtney Lumpkin. She played poorly in the first half, but in the second half she was great defensively and got the ball to the right people,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. The Eagles trailed by six at the half as they turned the ball over 12 times, but in the final half MSU only gave it away six times while forcing 10 Longwood mistakes. MSU also made six of its 11 three-pointers in the final half. For the game, MSU was 11-of-29 from long range and picked up 18 offensive rebounds. Ashar Harris led MSU with eight boards. Longwood got 15 points and 10 rebounds from Megan Smith, 13 points from Krystal Garrison, and 12 by Becky Fernandes. Fernandes also had a game best eight assists. The Lancers shot 41 percent for the game, but the Eagles forced the Lancers into a 2-for-8 effort from three-point land in the final half. The Eagles (5-3/1-0 OVC) were 11-of-23 from three-point range in the first half as they built a 39-16 lead. In the second half, however, MSU had to withstand a UT Martin rally and its own troubles. The Eagles were only 1-of-16 shooting beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes and had eight turnovers. UTM, however, couldn’t take advantage as the Skyhawks were just 10-of-19 from the free throw line after neither team shot a charity toss in the opening half. “That was probably the best first half we have played all year and probably the worst second half,” said head coach Mike Bradbury. “I am not sure what we were doing. I think we got a big lead and then we just lost our composure and our intensity. I am very happy we won a conference game on the road though. That is hard to do in our league.” Besides Bozeman’s night, sophomore Courtney Lumpkin sparked the first half onslaught by hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers and scoring 15 of her season high 17 in the opening period. She also handed out five assists on the day. Senior Tiffany Hamilton reached double figures in points for the fifth straight game with 12 and also came up with a career high six steals. MSU swiped the ball from UTM 15 times to set a season high. The Skyhawks led 12-11 with 12:47 remaining in the first half, but Lumpkin began a 12-0 run with a trey. Sophomore Abby Steele bookended the run with another three-ball at 9:23. MSU proceeded to push its lead to 31-14 before UTM’s Alecia Weatherly stopped the mini-run with a bucket at 5:03. That was the final field goal the Skyhawks scored in the first half. In the second half, the Skyhawks scored the first 13 points and cut the MSU lead down to 10 (39-29). Bozeman finally got the Eagles going again with a jumper at the 13:21 mark. UTM cut the margin to as low as seven (41-34), but a couple of Lumpkin free throws and a Steele triple pushed the MSU lead back out to double digits. For the game, MSU shot 36 percent after opening the game with a season best 52 percent for a half. The Eagles hit 9-of-10 free tosses, while the Skyhawks made just 10-of-19. Weatherly led UTM with a season high 19 points and eight rebounds, while Jessica Pace tallied 10 points MURRAY, Ky.—A strong second-half performance propelled Morehead State women’s basketball past OVC foe Murray State, 58-51, Saturday night at Murray State’s RSEC. The win was Eagle coach Mike Bradbury’s first victory in the RSEC. The Eagles improved to 6-3 overall abnd 2-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. “That was as good a defensive effort as we have had all year,” said Bradbury. “Sometimes on the road you really have to grind out wins and they may not be pretty, but after a bad first half, we only turned the ball over six or seven times in the second half and that made a huge difference.” Morehead State established a comfortable margin early in the second half thanks to a pair of triples, one from senior Tiffany Hamilton and one by sophomore Courtney Lumpkin, followed by a short jumper by senior Deja Watson to turn a twopoint halftime deficit into a 10-point lead. The lead was as high as 13 after Hamilton hit her third 3pointer, but the Racers cut that lead to seven with under a minute remaining. The Eagles hit their free throws down the stretch to push the lead back to 10. A couple of late fouls by Morehead State allowed Murray to close to the final margin of seven. Bozeman led the Eagles with 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Hamilton added 12 and Lumpkin had 10 points and six assists. Ashar Harris pulled down a team-high seven boards. Morehead State improved dramatically in ball control in the second half, surrendering just seven turnovers compared to 17 in the first half. The teams combined for 32 turnovers in the first half and shot just 30 percent between them from the field. The Eagles had an early fivepoint lead following a 3-pointer by senior Tiffanie Stephens, but a 12-3 run by the Racers gave the home team a four-point advantage with 9:11 left in the half. Five points from Hamilton and a bucket by junior Chyna Bozeman gave the lead back to Morehead State. Murray countered with seven straight points, but the Eagles hit the last shot of the half for a two-point halftime margin. Kayla Vance led all scorers with 19 pints for the Racers and Jessica Holder had seven rebounds. The Eagles held Murray to 29.7 percent shooting, including 19.2 percent from beyond the arc. MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State’s women’s basketball team knocked down a school single game record 16 three-pointers and held off a pesky Detroit Titan squad, 84-71, Sunday, at Johnson Arena. The Eagles won their fourth straight game and picked up their seventh win in eight tries to up their 2009-10 mark to 7-3. Senior Tiffany Hamilton led the three-point barrage with a 6-for-9 showing from beyond the arc for a season high 20 points. Junior Chynna Bozeman led the team with 22 points, including four triples, and also added a team high eight assists and six rebounds to nearly pull off a tripledouble. MSU also received a trio of three-balls and 13 points off the bench from senior Tiffanie Stephens as she reached double figures for the first time this season. Sophomore Counrtney Lumpkin scored 12 points and handed out six of the Eagles’ 19 total assists. The Eagles shot a season high 48 percent (30-of-63) from the floor overall and were even better from distance, canning 16 of their 30 attempts for a season best 53 percent. The Eagles lead the nation (NCAA Division I) in three-pointers attempted per game at 30.3. MSU also out-rebounded the Titans 38-31. Freshman Ashar Harris grabbed a team best 11 boards. Detroit landed five players in double figures, led by speedy guards Jalesa Jones and Dameisha Fambro. The Eagles had trouble containing the quick Jones who scored 15 points mostly in the paint on penetration. Fambro also scored 15. Kassandra Hooten tallied 14, Yar Shayok netted 12, and Bridig Mulroy, UDM’s leading scorer entering the game, pumped in 10. MSU drilled seven three-pointers in the first 8:50 of the first half to take a 29-13 lead in what appeared to be a one-sided contest. But, Detroit was relentless as they went on a 12-2 run, capped by a Shayok layup, during the next four minute span. Suddenly, MSU’s lead was cut to six (31-25). The Titans trimmed the margin down as low as five (38-33) before Ashley Martin’s jumper gave MSU a 40-33 halftime lead. The tempo kind of see-sawed back and forth in the second half as Detroit cut the Eagle lead to only four (43-39) with 18:07 left. Mulroy canned a trey at the 12:51 mark to cut it to six (55-49), but Hamilton answered right back with a threeball. Hamilton canned another triple at the 9:42 mark to thwart another Titan rally. From the 8:07 mark down to the 3:40 point on the clock, MSU effectively put the game away as it went on a 13-1 run. Hamilton again capped the rally with the record-breaking three-pointer to make it a 76-58 MSU advantage. The Titans made one last push, cutting the game back down to nine, but MSU hit all six of its free throws in the final minute to hold on. The Eagles, who hit a school record 16 triples on Sunday, weren’t quite as accurate today with a 7for-31 showing. KCU was led by 12 points from Kristin Hecht. Hecht and Abby Evans each had a team-best seven rebounds. The Lady Knights shot 33 percent for the game.
