Story Fall 2010 • Volume 8 • Number 2 Souderton THE A Publication for the Residents of Souderton Borough Pool Committee Aims to Raise $1M This time next year, residents across the Indian Valley will have enjoyed three months of jumping in and splashing around in the new Souderton Community Pool. That’s the plan if fundraising efforts to raise $1M are successful. Though just beginning the capital campaign, the Souderton Pool Committee, led by Borough Councilor Jeffrey Gross, is confident that local businesses and residents will come together to make the pool complex a cherished community space for years to come. Campaign Efforts In Motion The Make Your Splash Campaign is well underway. Approximately 8,000 mailers have been distributed to residents of Souderton, Franconia, and Telford townships. To date, $18,000 has been collected from this campaign for the pool complex and contributions are still being accepted. “We are one third of the way there,” says Mike Coll, Souderton Borough Manager, explaining that a total of $290,000 has been raised from state grants, a mailing campaign, and in-kind services from Franconia and Telford Boroughs who are assisting with demolition and The Souderton Pool Committee is working hard this fall season to form partnerships with major donors to help the Make Your Splash Campaign reach its goal of raising $1M for the new community pool. The Ripple Effect MAIN STREETS When the Streetscape Project Phase II is completed, residents and visitors will enjoy more granite curbing, granite block pavers, and new sidewalks along Main Street. The main construction will last September through November, with project completion by year-end. During construction, Main Street will experience periods of closure or partial closure. A clearly marked detour route around the construction area will go from Chestnut to North Front Streets. “The main objective of this project is to create a pedestrian-friendly downtown,” says Mike Coll, Souderton Borough Manager. “By providing new sidewalks, better street lighting and using a design Coll believes the project has a huge impact on the whole borough including existing and new businesses. The borough’s investment in the project causes a ripple effect as property owners reinvest in their property. This is evidenced by the renovation of two Mill buildings housing Allebach Advertising and David Halliday’s Village Center Properties (currently at 65% occupancy). “Being in a vibrant downtown area where tenants are close to great restaurants and can watch the parade and soapbox derby pass by their windows is very attractive,” says Pam Coleman, Souderton-Telford Main Streets Manager. Restoring Broad Street Theater The Broad Street Theater restoration project is an example of investors responding to the borough’s commitment. Main Streets secured gap financing and worked with an adjacent property owner resulting in doubling the size of the complex. When the venue is complete it will include a casual restaurant, a dinner-only steak house, a lounge, a concession stand, and a 490-seat theater that will not only return movies, but also accommodate live performances and corporate meetings. “The Broad Street Theater Complex in our downtown will be like a miniconvention center – we will become a regional destination,” says Coleman. Construction will last nine months. Main Streets is working to develop a restaurant association so that all restaurants benefit from two theaters in the downtown. Borough Council approved the conversion of an Anchor Building Grant into a revolving loan program with the Broad Theater as its first recipient. As the funds are repaid, they will be available for future commercial projects within Souderton. v Univest Grand Prix – A Brand New Experience (continued from page 1) Community Expo Has Something For All This year’s Community Expo will be expanded into the new Main Street Plaza and will feature something for everyone. Vincent Pools Inc. will be handling the pool construction. Swim Team Raises Funds Through Swim-A-Thon Support From Businesses and Organizations The swim team has great hopes for the new pool. With a well deep enough for diving competitions, the diving team will no longer travel by bus to the high school pool for meets. In joyful anticipation of their new pool complex, the swim team has been active in fundraising, raising over $3,500 from a swim-a-thon and collection boxes at area shops and restaurants. The Yocum Family generously matched this effort with a personal contribution of $3,500. The pool committee is now shifting its focus, and is seeking major donors for the project. Five tiers of giving have been established: • Community Donor (gifts $1,000-$5,000) • Bronze ($5,000-$10,000) • Silver ($10,000-$25,000) • Gold ($25,000-$99,000) • Platinum ($100,000+) Platinum donors will be provided naming rights to the concession stand area, community room, slide, bathhouse, or kid’s zone. Individuals or businesses interested in making a $1M contribution will have naming rights to the entire complex. “Contributing to the pool is an opportunity for businesses to leave a lasting legacy that generations will enjoy,”says Gross. Donors of all levels will be recognized in a mural on a dedication wall, designed in partnership with the Indian Valley Arts Foundation. Get Involved Now!
