RESOURCES FOR LOCATING A CAMP
The following Web sites may help you locate potential camps for your
child throughout the country. If you don’t have access to the Internet,
you can call the National Information Center for Children and Youth
with Disabilities at 1-800-695-0285 for information on camps in your
area or to have literature mailed to you.
www.acacamps.org: This interactive database sponsored by the
American Camping Association lists over 2,000 ACA-accredited
camps around the country.
www.nichcy.org: This is the Web site of the National Information
Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities. It lists camps for
children with specific disabilities.

TIPS FOR PARENTS
CHOOSING A SUMMER CAMP:
The Learning Disabilities Association of Missouri published the following guidelines in its newsletter. We
reprint them here to help you choose from the camps or programs listed in this directory. Since children
with disabilities often have perceptual or behavioral problems, some important issues to consider include:
•
The minimum age for counselors.
•
The ratio of campers to counselors.
•
The background of the camp director and program director.
•
Medical staff and expertise available.
•
Program orientation (i.e., do campers go to activities with counselors and cabinmates,
individually or both?).
•
What happens when a child does not want to participate in an activity, or is poor at a certain activity?
•
How much flexibility is there concerning the level of activity at which a child participates (i.e., if he/she is
15 years old but cannot swim, does he/she have swimming instruction with cabinmates or with
non-swimmers)?
•
How sophisticated are the activities?
•
What forms of discipline are used?
•
How strict is the camp?
•
How does the staff handle teasing, scapegoating, and rejection?
•
Are children ever moved from one group to another?
•
Are parents contacted if there is a concern about the child?
•
On what basis would a decision be made to end a child’s stay at camp? How much, if any, money
would be refunded?
•
Has the camp served children with disabilities before? How has it worked out?
•
What were the attributes of children who adjusted most and least to the camp?
•
What are the typical campers like?
•
What are the camp’s goals for its campers?
Some final questions to ponder may include:
•
Is there any feedback provided at the end of the camp concerning the child’s improvement in social,
educational and/or physical skills? If so, is this report verbal or in writing?
•
What are camp rules regarding visiting, writing, telephoning, and so on?
•
What can parents share with the camp that would be helpful?
•
What equipment would it be helpful to send?
Answering these questions ahead of time will make a more enjoyable camping experience for the camper,
his/her family, and the camp itself.
