Vellore City Vellore is the headquarters of Vellore District, located on the bank of Palar River in the north-eastern part of Tamilnadu and was ruled by the Pallavas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Vijayanagar Empire, Rashtrakutas, Carnatic Kingdom and the British. Vellore is located about 145 km west of the state capital Chennai and 211 km east of Karnataka capital Bengaluru. It is the base of two of India's top ten educational institutions, Christian Medical College & Hospital and VIT University. Vellore region is the top exporter of finished leather goods in the country and it accounts for 37% of the country's export of leather and leather-related products. Vellore Fort, Government Museum, Science Park, Vainu Bappu Observatory, Amirthi Zoological Park, Jalakandeswarar Temple, Srilakshmi Golden Temple, Big Mosque, St. John's Church and Yelagiri Hill station are the tourist attractions in and around Vellore. VIT University Founded in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, the institute was declared as University in recognition of its academic excellence by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India in 2001. The University has since grown by leaps and bounds – establishing excellent infrastructure replete with state-of-art laboratories, digital library, smart class rooms, hostels, gyms, swimming pools, auditoria , in-door and out-door stadiums spread over an impeccably clean and green 350 acre campus – on way to fulfill the vision of the founder and chancellor Dr. G. Viswanathan to make it truly world class. VIT today comprises of ten constituent schools and interdisciplinary research centres offering undergraduate, post graduate and research programmes in various disciplines. VIT has organized many International and National conferences in the recent past utilizing its awesome facilities. VIT is the first educational institution in India to get ISO 9002 certification by the DNV of The Netherlands and few of the programmes were accreditated by IEE (UK) and NBA (India). The University was recently reaccreditated for the third cycle by NAAC (UGC) and Ranked No.1 Private Engineering Institution by MHRD, Govt of India. VIT has signed Memorandum of Understanding with many institutions within India and abroad including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, UK and USA. Such understanding are aimed towards exchange of faculty and students, joint academic programmes involving courses as well as research and improvement of laboratory and library facilities. The University offers 20 Undergraduate, 34 Postgraduate, 4 Integrated programmes and 4 Research programmes. The various programmes in VIT are offered through ten Schools and Centres. School of Bio Sciences and Technology (SBST) SBST is offering B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc., and Ph. D. programmes in Biotechnology and many other allied areas. SBST has adequate infrastructure and skilled faculty members for carrying out teaching, research and developmental activities in different areas of Biotechnology. Major areas of research include Molecular Genetics, Clinical Genetics, Plant Biotechnology, Microbiology and Microbial Technology, Cancer Biology, Bioinformatics, Bioprocess Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology and Immuno Biotechnology. Seaweed Research Utilization Association (SRUA) The Seaweed Research and Utilisation Association of India was started in August 1968 at the Marine Algal Research Station of Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSIR), Mandapam, Tamil Nadu by Prof. V. Krishnamurthy (late), who was the Assistant Director of the Institute and Founder President of SRUA. It is a Non-Government Organisation, registered under Tamil Nadu Government Registration Act. Now it has more than 200 life members, annual members and institutional members. SRUA organises National Conference/ Symposium every year jointly with one of the Research Organisations or Educational Institutions in the country. Apart from this, it is conducting National Workshops on different aspects of marine algae. This prestigious society publishes “Seaweed Research and Utilisation” Journal (ISSN 0971-7560) containing original research and critical review articles on seaweeds. It is the only scientific journal publishing papers on Research and Development on marine algae of India. The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi has awarded Impact Factor for this journal. Till now, 38 volumes have been published. About the Conference Algae are large and diverse group of plants which can carry out photosynthesis by using the energy from sun light. They belong to various groups such as green, brown, red and blue green algae and flourish in the shallow waters of the sea, estuaries, backwaters and fresh water bodies. Algae are used as food, fodder, manure, medicine, phycocolloids such as agar, agarose, carrageenan and alginates.Human beings are benefited by consuming marine algae either directly as food or indirectly as an ingredient in food formulations. They contain considerable amounts of proteins, carbohydrates and fibre in addition to antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds. Some diseases viz., cancer, inflammation, arthritis, diabetes, hypertension and cardio vascular diseases are prevented by consuming fresh water algae and marine algae, as they contain biologically active compounds such as phlorotannins, carotenoids, alginic acid, fucoidan etc.,. Seaweeds are the only natural source for the phytochemicals (agar, carrageenan and alginates) which have multifarious uses (agar in biotechnology, alginates as stabilizer and emulsifier in food industry and carrageenan in food and pharmaceutical industries). Marine algae containing micronutrients and growth hormones have proved to improve the yield and quality of agriculture crops, providing healthy organic food for human beings. They also form a source for bioethanol and aid in bioremediation by removing toxic metals from waste water. This Conference will provide an opportunity for students, researchers, faculty members, entrepreneurs and industrialists to interact & discussion and have deliberations on the following aspects of algae. ! Distribution, resources, ecology, biology and utilisation ! Nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, biomedical and biodental engineering ! Molecular biology, nanotechnology and biotechnology ! Production of bioethanol, biodiesel and biogas ! Bioremediation, biofouling and biofertilizer !
