XTREME BULLS Four-time World Champion Bull Rider J.W. Harris crossed another item off his bucket list in 2014 by winning his first Xtreme Bulls Tour championship before attempting a title defense at the Wrangler NFR, above, where he came in sixth in the average. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Larry Smith What is Xtreme Bulls? The PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour showcases the PRCA’s top bull riders and some of the rankest bulls the world has to offer; Xtreme Bulls bull riders include the top bull riders from the Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings as well as contestants who advance through Xtreme Bulls qualifying events. In Xtreme Bulls events, every contestant competes in the first round, with the top performers advancing to the final round. The winner of the two-head average after the final round earns the title for that Tour stop. Money won on the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour counts toward the Windham Weaponry High Performance PRCA World Standings for bull riding, which determine the qualifiers for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, but it does not count toward the all-around standings. There were eight Division I Xtreme Bulls events in 2014, all televised by MAVTV on providers including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Dish Network, DirecTV, Verizon on Demand and more. 2014 season highlights J.W. Harris crossed off an important item on his rodeo bucket list when he won the 2014 Xtreme Bulls Tour year-end championship. “It’s about time,” exclaimed Harris, who had chased the title throughout his 10-year career. • Rookie Sage Kimzey announced his presence to the rodeo world in February when he not only won the Xtreme Bulls event in San Antonio, Texas – the biggest of the season – but also won the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. The $40,307 he totaled at the two events would keep him near the top of the standings all season. • Harris won the Rapid City, S.D., Xtreme Bulls event with 181 points on two head. That total was the best two-head average score of any of the eight Tour events in 2014. Harris’ first-round score of 92 points was the best ride at any 2014 Xtreme Bulls event and among the top 25 rides of the season. • Only two men who won an Xtreme Bulls event in 2013 also won one in 2014. Tyler Smith, who won twice on his way to the season title in 2013, won the Okeechobee, Fla., event in 2014, while Brett Stall won in Cody, Wyo., in 2014 after taking the title in Lovington, N.M., last year. Finale highlights Young phenom Sage Kimzey and comeback rider Cody Campbell both scored 170.5 on two bulls to share the average title at the 2014 Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale at Ellensburg, Wash., on Aug. 30. • The tie for the average was only the third in the 12-year history of the Tour – the first two were in Bremerton, Wash., in 2010 and Fort Mohave, Ariz., in 2013. • Of the 12 riders who advanced to the final found, only three were able to navigate the loaded pen of top bulls: Kimzey, Campbell and Kanin Asay – the only two-time winner of the Xtreme Bulls Tour series (2007, 2012). • Campbell had missed much of the summer after breaking an ankle at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo in June, but at Ellensburg, he teamed up with Korkow Rodeo’s Bad Habit for an 85.5 score and fourth place in the first round. He then scored an 85 on his second bull, Western Rodeos’ Bad Blake, enough to ensure a share of the average title. It was the first Xtreme Bulls win for the 27-year-old in his eight years of PRCA competition. • Kimzey, who turned 20 four days before the Finale, had come in a full two points behind Campbell in the first round, scoring 83.5 on Korkow Rodeo’s Secret Stash, but he won the final round outright with a score of 87 on Corey and Lange Rodeo’s Wild Eyes, taking home $15,052 for the day’s work. It was Kimzey’s second Xtreme Bulls win; his first was earlier in the 2014 season, at San Antonio. • The last time a Finale winner had also won a Tour stop earlier in the same season was in 2011, when J.W. Harris won both Reno and Ellensburg. Only four other bull riders have accomplished the two-step.
