 Dickens Village Festival: Garrison transforms itself into
the “Christmas Capitol of North Dakota” starting Thanksgiving weekend and the next two weekends. A Victorian family
festival in an quaint English setting featuring Queen Elizabus

Custer Mine Interpretive Site
Highway 37/Highway 83 Intersection
The Custer Mine Interpretive site, near the
intersection of ND Highway 37 and U.S.
Highway 83, is a parcel of land that showcases a piece of Garrison’s early coal mining history. This site has been maintained
as Custer Mine Interpretive Site but was
the former location of the Truax-Taer Mine.
The site was established in 1989 as part
of North Dakota’s Centennial celebration.
The site includes signage explaining the
history of the area and a scenic overlook.
A pond is also nearby for fishing.

mission is to preserve and present the
storied histories, rich traditions, and heritage of firefighting, firefighters, and the

Heritage Park and Museum has uniquely
preserved the history of Garrison and the
surrounding area. Begun by the Heritage
Park Foundation, the museum features a
train depot constructed in 1905 that also
serves as a museum for period items.
The park also features a country school,
a country church, telephone office, two
fully furnished homestead houses, and a
log cabin.

Located in Fort Stevenson State Park, the
Fort Stevenson Guardhouse Interpretive
Center is a replica of the original military
guardhouse that was lost when the land it
was standing on was flooded by the formation of Lake Sakakawea. The Guardhouse holds artifacts, memorabilia, and
history of Fort Stevenson and the Missouri
River. The attraction also features a full
size three inch rifled cannon.

are separated by an embankment,
which carries US Highway 83.
The lake named for the Native American
woman who joined Lewis and Clark 200
years ago, is the third-largest manmade
lake in the United States. It’s filled by
the Missouri River and contained by the
Garrison Dam, the country’s fifth largest.
This huge lake, with more shoreline
than California, is home to numerous
species. Walleye is the most popular
catch, but anglers can also reel in northern pike, Chinook salmon, smallmouth
bass, white bass, yellow perch, crappie,
and sauger.

Lake Audubon
Lake Audubon is located near Garrison on U.S. Highway 83. This lake is
16,612 acres in size and features 152.8
miles of Shoreline. It is 59.90 feet deep
at its deepest point and anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including
walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern
pike. Audubon Lake, a sister lake to
Lake Sakakawea, was also formed with

Trails: Nearly 10 miles of trails provide
hiking, biking, and interpretive opportunities in long, linear trail segments and
shorter loops. The trail system winds
through tree plantings, shrub lands, ponderosa pine woodlands, wooded ravines,
grasslands, and native prairie.
Trails include: de Trobriand Loop (1.7
miles), Whitetail Loop (.9 miles), Trooper
Challenge Loop (.7 miles), Purple Coneflower Trail (1 mile), Flicker Trail (2.3
miles), The Eagle Ridge Loop (.2 miles),
Arboretum Trail (.48 miles), and Northern
Pine Loop (2.2 miles). Grab a Trail Guide
brochure when you get to the park for
more information and a map.
Cross Country Ski Trails: There are
trails for skiers of all skill levels at Fort
Stevenson State Park. The trails are well
marked and groomed weekly and after
snowfalls. In early January, a candle
light ski/snowshoe event is organized at
the park.

Two sets of playground equipment, picnic
tables, shelter, bathroom facilities, and
bandstand make this park the center of
fun and entertainment. The picnic shelter and bandstand have been the premier
spot for many outdoor events and may
be reserved for gatherings.

Relax with a picnic or just listen to the
birds sing in the serenity of Garrison’s
Wilderness Park. A playground is located
close by for children to play. An 18 hole
disc golf course is also located within the
park. Picnic shelters are available to host
gatherings.

operated by a constituency of more than
70 Lutheran congregations in western
North Dakota and the Northern Plains
Conference of the United Church of
Christ, Camp of the Cross has been serving people of all ages and walks of life for
over 50 years through summer camping
and year-round retreat ministries.
Camp of the Cross Ministries stands by
its mission statement to provide a Christ
centered outdoor ministry experience.
It offers a holy space set apart in God’s
beautiful creation for people to gain a
fuller understanding of the grace of God
and to hear God’s call in their lives.

Triangle Y Camp is operated in order to
aid the development of character and
Christian philosophy of life by providing
activities and services which will contribute to the spiritual, social, mental, and
physical growth of boys, girls, men, and

Triangle Y Camp offers week long camp
experiences for children ages 6-15 during
the summer months. Activities include
swimming, canoeing, horseback riding,
climbing, target sports, field games, and
much more. Each child will come away
from camp having made new friends and
a new sense of self confidence.

The Garrison Public School system provides the community’s
educational needs from Preschool through graduation. Bob Callies
Elementary School serves the Preschool through sixth grade while
students in grades 7-12 attend Garrison High School. The district
also employs a special education staff in the schools and operates
an alternate education center.
