OIAF Report 14:15 - Ottawa International Animation Festival
LETITIT LET OUT OUT SEPT 16–20 ANIMATIONFESTIVAL.CA 2015 FINAL REPORT 2015 FINAL REPORT 1 ABOUT THE CANADIAN FILM INSTITUTE The Ottawa International Animation Festival is organized by the Canadian Film Institute (CFI). The CFI was incorporated in 1935 as a federally chartered, non-governmental, non-profit cultural organization. It is the oldest film institution in Canada and the second oldest film institute in the world. In addition to the OIAF, the Canadian Film Institute organizes the European Union Film Festival, the Latin American Film Festival and showcases Canadian filmmakers with events such as Café Ex and the Enlightened Screen. • Last year CFI events had a total attendance of 48,919. • Over the year, it organized 254 different screenings and events. • The CFI programmed a significant amount of Canadian works and many of these events had enriched, educational components. It showcased the work of 115 Canadian artists. • It published a book on Canadian filmmaker Stephen Broomer and continues to maintain a guide to the Canadian animation industry, animationfestival.ca and a guide to animation for kids and teens, toonapprentice.ca. • The Organization’s websites cfi-icf.ca and animationfestival.ca feature film contact information and essays about Canadian programming. • It offers the touring programs 'Best of the Ottawa Animation Festival and 'Welcome to Kanata' which are screened on a national and international level. • Free OIAF programs such as Animation Celebration and Toon Apprentice Day for Teens once again brought the world of animation to local schools. 2 As a charity, the OIAF performed well, spending 62.6% of its funding on its artistic programming, 8% on marketing, 9.1% on fundraising and 8.1% on administration. It is audited each year by local accounting firm McCay Duff. Despite strong box office and sponsorship, there was a small deficit for the 2014/15 fiscal year but the Organization remains strong with solid reserves. The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is the largest event of its kind in North America, attracting attendees from around the world. Film buffs, art lovers and cartoon fans came out to see this year's great line-up of screenings at the ByTowne Cinema, St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Arts Court Theatre. Attendance at this year’s Festival was 29,686. The highlight of the Festival is its competition and showcase screenings, collections of the best new animated work selected from 2,088 entries in 2015. They feature a mixture of short independent films, TV commercials, television series, student films, music videos, feature films and more. The Festival also features many special screenings, workshops, panels, parties and outreach programs. In addition, the OIAF produces a number of publications to enrich the Festival experience, such as the Festival Guide, the Festival App and TAC Delegate Guide. THE 2015 SELECTION PROCESS and the official selections The OIAF takes great pride in the fact that it has never charged a submission/entry fee to filmmakers who submit work to the Festival. We feel very strongly that entry fees minimize the benefit of providing filmmakers with artist fees. The OIAF accepts animation works of all lengths and subject matters. An open call is made in January of each year through the Internet, mail and advertising. The five Short Competition and five Showcase screenings were the highlights of the Festival. They featured a mixture of films from all the categories programmed by Artistic Director Chris Robinson. Unlike other animation festivals, commercial works are not segregated into their own screenings but are thrown in the mix. This practice gives the OIAF its unique reputation as the place where art and industry intersect. At the Gala screenings each of the filmmakers in attendance was introduced to the audience and the jury was present. At the secondary screening, the filmmakers in attendance were introduced together at the beginning of the screening. 6 Short Competition 1 Screening One: Wednesday, September 16, 9:15 pm - 10:45 pm, ByTowne Cinema (GALA) Attendance: 489 Screening Two: Sunday, September 20, 1:00 pm – 2:30pm, ByTowne Cinema Attendance: 179 Filmmaker in Film Title Attendance? Motivated by shifting political climates and, as ever, wanting to change the world, Winkler's adventurous life takes a radical turn in the 1980s as he leaves France to fight alongside Commander Massoud against the Soviets in the far off Afghani mountainside, perhaps with a little more courage than skill. Directed by Anca Damian (Crulic) and framed as a final conversation between Winkler and his daughter, Ania, Mountain portrays a man dealing with his own naïve impulsiveness, trying to re-direct the burning energy of his beliefs and actions toward something that has a deeper and more personal meaning. Screening One: Wednesday, September 16, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm – ByTowne Cinema (GALA) Attendance: 130 Screening Two: Saturday, September 19, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm – ByTowne Cinema Attendance: 67 16 POS ESO (POSSESSED) SAM ORTI, SPAIN Part The Exorcist, part Ghostbusters, Possessed has as many hearty laughs as it does genuine cringes, meaning Sam Orti’s clay animated comedy horror flick is not for the faint of heart... that is unless the sight of red plasticine gore won’t turn your stomach. Trini, the world famous flamenco dancer, has abandoned the stage and is deeply depressed after her bullfighting husband dies. Damian, her 8-yearold son, spirals into rebellious behaviour that no doctor or psychiatrist can explain. The only possible explanation is that he is possessed by a malicious devil that makes him do the most bloody and cruel misdeeds. Sam Orti attended the festival. Screening One: Thursday, September 17, 11:00 am - 12:22 pm – ByTowne Cinema (GALA) Attendance: 122 Screening Two: Saturday, September 19, 5:00 pm - 6:22 pm – ByTowne Cinema Attendance: 149 17 ADAMA SIMON ROUBY, FRANCE The first feature-length effort from French writer/director Simon Rouby, Adama is the story of our 12 year-old eponymous hero and his decision to leave the remote West African village in which he grew up in order to find his missing older brother Samba. Beyond the village, Adama travels through war-torn Europe to the hell of the frontlines in order to free Samba, his love for whom takes him down unexpected paths on this lifechanging journey away from home. With an innovative, dream-like visual style, Adama powerfully connects themes of spirituality and community with the political and personal realities of war. Screening One: Thursday, September 17, 7:00 pm – 8:22 pm, ByTowne Cinema (GALA) Attendance: 119 Screening Two: Saturday, September 19, 9:15 pm – 10:37 pm, ByTowne Cinema Attendance: 92 18 OVER THE GARDEN WALL PATRICK MCHALE, USA, SOUTH KOREA Two young brothers find themselves lost in a strange forest. Older brother Wirt, armed with too much sense, and little brother Greg, armed with not enough, must rely on a long parade of helpful (and not so helpful) strangers as they make the long journey in search of home. With the help of a bluebird named Beatrice and young Greg’s nameless froggy friend, they must travel through this magic land of clothed animals and dancing pumpkins on their way home… before the mysterious Beast catches up with them. Featuring Elijah Wood as Wirt, and the voices of Christopher Lloyd, Shirley Jones, John Cleese and Tim Curry as some of the supporting cast of characters, Over the Garden Wall is a classic adventure tale from writer/director Patrick McHale Adventure Time, who has given a simple brotherly bonding story an earnestly goofy spin. Patrick McHale attended the festival. There is no one like him in animation. The closest comparison might be found in the free jazz of Ornette Coleman or Albert Ayler. Nothing is stable in Bickford’s universe. Heads, humans, and landscapes form, re-form, transform. It’s like observing a child blissfully lost in play. You don’t have a clue what is going on, but you’re mesmerized by the sheer inventiveness and wonder of it all. You don’t comprehend the world of Bruce Bickford, you experience it, you savour it. Bruce Bickford attended the festival. Using her trademark black ink style and metamorphic choreography, Cournoyer's surreal, tense and a deeply personal films confront relationships, rape (The Hat), aging (Dolorosa), technology (Accordion), war (Robes of War), identity (The Artist), and addiction (Soif) in uncompromising, enlightening, provocative and even occasionally humourous ways that will mystify, unsettle, and inspire audiences. Cournoyer's films take us to places we often avoid, uncovering a darkness that lurks behind our scared small talk smiles. Michèle Cournoyer attended the festival. Sometimes the result shows off its digital aesthetic, and other times films digitally simulate the look of analog materials. Chalk, paint, sand, clay, puppets, pen on paper; all these techniques can be convincingly simulated digitally with wonderful and sophisticated technologies. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but as it’s less common these days to come across an animated short created completely IRL. This program showcases and celebrates contemporary films in which directors braved the tedium and mess of analog animation in a world of digital solutions, and aims to pay homage to ye animation techniques of olde. Littered with an assortment of pop culture references and inside jokes, Jancis’ memorable group of oddball characters are really just seeking – much like contemporary Estonia – to carve out their own space in this wild west of an existence and, if they’re lucky, a moment or two of human connection. Kaspar Jancis attended the festival. What followed was a revolution. Newgrounds became home of some of the most inventive, controversial and hilarious content on the web, all created for basically no reason by a community of professionals, amateurs, teenagers, trolls and early experiments from some of the biggest animators working today. Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania... Dracula's rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn't showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny - and in for a major cultural shock of her own - "Vampa" Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a "monster-in-training" boot camp. But little do they know that Drac's grumpy and very old, old, old school dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood - and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania - things are going to get batty! Zeman was in his field of absolute solitaire, he created his own handmade world based purely from his imagination. There is one more story in the film - nowadays students of animation at Zlin university remake three of Zeman´s best scenes using old ways of making the special effects, how do they succeed? Screening One: Friday, September 18, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm – National Gallery Auditorium Attendance: 106 Screening Two: Sunday, September 20, 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm – National Gallery Auditorium Attendance: 30 26 INVENTION FOR DESTRUCTION KAREL ZEMAN, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, 1958 The story of the engineer Simon Hart - as recorded in his diary - takes place at a time when humanity was driven by a belief in inevitable progress. New inventions emerged like mushrooms after the rain and attracted criminals to abuse them... This is the first of Karel Zeman’s films to be inspired by Jules Verne, in which the director tries out a new style of art direction, which he was later to develop even further. The story-book sets, striking design and innovative music of Zdeněk Liška – all contribute to the unique appearance of this thrilling story with its anti-war subtext. The black and white narrative is deeply influenced by the classic engravings of Édouard Riou and Léon Bennett - the original illustrators of Verne’s novels. The most successful Czechoslovakian film in history, which became a global phenomenon in 1958. In New York alone it was screened simultaneously in 96 cinemas. This fantasy adventure won a number of prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix at EXPO 58 in Brussels. The digital restoration of the film Invention for Destruction is a part of the project Restoring The World of Fantasy. Restoring The World of Fantasy is a joint project of The Czech Film Foundation, Karel Zeman Museum and Czech Television. Our aim is to create effective business opportunities for emerging, mid-level and established producers and increase export potential for Canadian properties. TAC provides a great opportunity for independent animators to pitch projects, network and gain new business skills. Unlike similar business events that cost registrants $1,000 or more to attend, TAC is reasonably priced at $540, including admittance to the rest of the Festival. Guest artists attending the Festival can upgrade their complimentary AnimaPass to a TAC pass for only $150. One of the purposes of TAC is to get commercial producers out to OIAF screenings and introduce them to new Canadian independent work. Although TAC does not fit within the objectives of the City of Ottawa Festival’s funding program, it is a crucial way for the Festival to attract sponsorship support from the animation industry. This component of our event essentially helps to fund the OIAF. TAC provides Ottawa’s local animation companies, producers, directors and artists a highly accessible way to meet with industry decision makers. TAC has three primary objectives: Objective 1: Providing Canadian producers access to key industry representatives TAC gives Canadian producers the unique opportunity to meet with key buyers and potential partners from around the world. This year the Conference drew 250 key buyers, financiers and influential industry executives from North America, Asia and Europe. The variety of events at the Conference allows producers to hear from these distinguished guests and to then meet with them formally and informally to pitch projects, initiate partnerships and build strong, long-term relations. Objective 2: Engaging producers in current industry debates TAC allows producers to gain insight into current trends and developments in the national and international industries in order to become more competitive in the global marketplace. Objective 3: Promoting Canadian content to buyers thanks to its internationally celebrated reputation, the OIAF receives an astonishing number of film submissions each year, with record-breaking figures in the past three years. As a side event to the OIAF, TAC has the unique ability to showcase a wide range of new Canadian programming to domestic and foreign buyers. 36 MARKETING The Festival maximizes its marketing budget through a mixture of media buys and sponsored promotion. Each year we undertake new initiatives in order to build awareness about the event and increase the audience for animated films. Most of our marketing material aims to attract visitors to our website. With the help of the City of Ottawa sustainability grant the look of the site was completely overhauled in 2012. Feedback was very positive and the site not only looks better but is easier to navigate. PROMOTION TO THE ANIMATION COMMUNITY The opt-in e-mail newsletters go out to over 19,000 worldwide subscribers on a monthly basis. Groups from animation schools make up a large percentage of pass holders. Early in the year, a mail is sent to animation schools that are within driving distance of event venues to remind them of the upcoming festival. OIAF also offers a ‘Best of Ottawa’ program to schools free of charge, and this includes an OIAF promotional video. Many animation industry magazines are interested in doing promotional swaps in exchange for sponsorship. AWN, Cartoon Brew, and Animation Magazine promoted OIAF with a series of in-kind online ads. The OIAF received quarter-page ads in the program books of a number of international film festivals as part of an ad swap initiative. These included: International Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart, Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Anima Mundi International Animation Festival of Brazil, Canlandianlar Animator’s Festival Turkey, and Fantasia International Film Festival Montreal. The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television takes part in the ad swap initiative, advertising the Festival in the 2015 Screen Awards program book. LOCAL MARKETING Award-winning ad firm McMillan works with the Festival to create a branding concept and a poster. There are usually four different designs that are used on posters (1,200 are distributed in Ottawa and Gatineau), t-shirts, in print ads, and online promotions. The images are also displayed on OC Transpo buses, in the Ottawa Citizen, the Fulcrum and the Charlatan (Carleton University), and on banner ads for the arts and culture blog Apt613. The OIAF has a Festival app, which provides information for schedules, programming, tickets, social media, and maps. The “Cartoon Cam” allows users to take their own photos surrounded by a festival banner. OIAF produces a fully bilingual Festival Guide, which are also distributed by Diffusart and are made available at Ottawa-based coffee chain Bridgehead. This Guide includes a tourism section. In exchange for being included local restaurants and shops provided gift certificates, which are given to OIAF jury, VIP guests and volunteers. 37 Large banners are installed outside the Arts Court. As a member of Ottawa Festivals, the OIAF participates in a bulk media buy, which provided coverage on a series of CTV Ottawa promotions. Ottawa Festivals also coordinated other promotions including social media contests and retweets of OIAF posts. OIAF radio sponsors CKDJ (Algonquin College radio) and CHUO (University of Ottawa) provided 30-second PSAs that ran several times per day from early August until the Festival in September. Festival venue ByTowne Cinema includes a 1/3-page ad, including a schedule of screenings that took place at the theatre, along with a front-page mention of OIAF in the September-October schedule flyer. The Festival also had a booth at Ottawa Comic Con in May 2015, which was a fantastic way to reach out to new audiences with similar interests. OIAF was also listed on a number of Community Event Calendars: CBC, Ottawa Citizen, Apt613, Ottawa Kiosk, City of Ottawa, CouchAssassins, and Spotlight. SOCIAL MARKETING Facebook was used as a tool for putting up general Festival information, press releases, workshops and the daily schedule during the event. This proved to be very effective marketing; the twitter account is now up to 10K followers, Facebook 13K like the OIAF page and there are 1,445 like the Facebook group. MEDIA RELATIONS The OIAF sends targeted press releases to local, national and international media, including industry publications. Releases are issued to request competition entries; announce competitors, features, retrospectives, family programming and official winners. Local TV, radio and print media are invited to cover the Festival by using targeted story ideas tailored to specific outlets. Also, OIAF publicizes a complete list of hot spots at the Festival, such as where the best film or photography opportunities can be found including workshops (kids), the picnic, screenings, ceremonies and TAC (targeted media). Media accreditation is provided to reputable media organizations including mainstream media (CBC, CTV, CFRA) as well as influential bloggers. The 2015 Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) was a success in terms of its coverage in the media during the weeks and months leading up to the festival, as well as post-festival. Major media outlets that covered the festival included: CBC, CTV, the Ottawa Citizen, Metro Ottawa, Rogers TV, Playback, Animation Magazine, Animation World Network, Ottawa Kiosk, Apt 613 and Kidscreen. 38 PUBLICATIONS TAC DELEGATE GUIDE This guide is distributed to all TAC passholders and provides a schedule of all the events taking place at the Conference, including keynotes, panels and seminars. Individual delegates are each featured in member profiles in the guide, giving attendees a brief description of their background and providing contact information to facilitate networking at the festival and beyond. GUIDE TO THE FESTIVAL An 88 page print guide that is distributed across Ottawa. The Guide features programming information, schedules and a Guide to Ottawa which lists restaurants and stores the staff would recommend. VOLUNTEERS The 2015 Festival was made possible by 216 registered volunteers who contributed approximately 2,000 hours of their time to help make the Festival a success. In early September, OIAF representatives visited students at Algonquin College’s animation classes and Carleton University's film studies classes to introduce the Festival and promote the benefits of volunteering. Volunteers each contributed a minimum of two four-hour shifts. In return they received a full-access AnimaPass, which allowed entry to all OIAF events (with the exception of those that were sold out or those with venue age restrictions, such as parties and other social events.) Volunteer positions included Office Assistant, Poster Crew, Aniboutique Assistant, Chez Ani assistant, Receptionist, Usher, Airport Greeter, Driver Assistant, and more. Volunteers are a vital part of the Festival and provide much-needed help. The community’s involvement not only benefits the Festival but increases its accessibility to people, especially students, who cannot afford to purchase full passes. Volunteers gain valuable work experience and have an opportunity to network with leaders in the animation industry. Furthermore, the Festival draws upon past volunteers when hiring staff each year. 39 2015 FESTIVAL VENUES ARTS Court (2 Daly Avenue) Various Rooms A historic landmark and the former Carleton County courthouse, Arts Court is home to Ottawa’s largest and most innovative group of professional arts producers and presenters.
