(Major Indoor Soccer League) and PASL (Professional Arena Soccer League) have combined to form the Major Arena Soccer
League.
The Major Arena Soccer League will play 20 regular season games and the teams will divided into multiple divisions based on
geography. Three teams from each division will make the play-offs. Team schedules will be released at the beginning of September
along with the play-off format. The inaugural game for the league will take place on October 25, 2014 between the Dallas Sidekicks

PLAYER BIOS
An avid sports fan and Baltimore native, Edwin F. Hale Sr. is the proud owner of the 2003, 2004, 2006,
2008 and 2009 Champion Baltimore Blast. After owning the Blast for nine seasons, he saw one of his
dreams come true on April 18, 2003 when the Blast defeated the Milwaukee Wave to win the club’s first
title since 1984. He only had to wait one more year for his team to win the Championship again and after
that the Blast went on to win it all in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2013.
Hale is in his second stint as owner of the Blast, having repurchased the team in the spring of 1998 after
having previously owned the Blast from 1989 to 1992. Hale, 65, kicked off his involvement in Baltimore
soccer on September 15, 1989 when he purchased the Baltimore Blast of the original MISL. Under his
direction, the team earned two division championships and averaged 8,500 fans at home games at the
then-Baltimore Arena. During his involvement in the original MISL, Hale served as Chairman of the
Executive Committee and was regarded as one of the League’s most active and dedicated executives.
Hale's initial involvement with the Blast ended at the conclusion of the 1991-92 MSL season. In 1998, he
signed an agreement for sole ownership of Baltimore’s National Professional Soccer League franchise and
changed the team’s name back to the Blast. In November 2011 he was one of the first three inductees into
the MISL Hall of Fame.
Hale's professional experience is highly respected in the Maryland business community. Though he
recently retired from his position as COB/CEO at 1st Mariner Bank, Hale is currently the President and
CEO of Hale Properties which specializes in commercial real estate, development and leasing. Hale
Properties is working on Canton Crossing which includes an office tower and retail and residential space. A
long-time advocate for tourism in Baltimore, Hale served as the Chairman of Visit Baltimore for six years
prior to his recent retirement.
Known throughout the community for his professional successes and charitable endeavors, Hale was Ernst
& Young’s “Master Entrepreneur of the Year” in 1996, the William Donald Schaefer Visionary Tourism
award winner in 2011 and has been recognized by several charitable organizations for his dedication to the
community in which he grew up. He also served as chairman of Miss USA in 2005 and 2006 (owned by
NBC and Donald Trump).
Born in Highlandtown, Hale attended Sparrows Point High School, Essex Community College and the
American International College in Springfield, Mass. He also served two years in the U.S. Air Force
(Strategic Air Command) as a medic. Hale resides in Edgemere and has three children, Edwin Jr., Ashley
and Alexandra and three grandsons, Tyler, Leo and Charlie.
Kevin Healey - President and General Manager
As general manager of the Baltimore Blast, Kevin Healey has turned 15 years into six league titles and
numerous successful player acquisitions. His hard work and dedication to the franchise and to the growth
of Baltimore soccer helped lead the Blast to back-to- back Championships in 2003 and 2004 and to four
more Championships in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2013.
Healey was named General Manager and Head Coach of the Blast prior to the 1998-99 NPSL season and
spent just over four seasons in both positions; He currently serves as the team’s President and General
Manager. A graduate of Baltimore’s Loyola College, Healey played for the 1976 NCAA Division II National
Champion Greyhounds. His soccer record over the past two decades includes multiple national youth and
senior amateur titles as well as the presidency of two soccer leagues. In addition to his duties with the
Blast, Healey is the President of the Baltimore Bays, one of the nation’s premier youth soccer clubs. Over
the last eight years he has co-coached seven Baltimore Bays teams to National Titles.
In Healey’s 15 seasons as General Manager, the team has won six league titles, appeared in eight
championships, advanced to the semifinals 12 times and boasted a number of League individual award
winners. He has signed a variety of players from the Baltimore area as well as from around the country and
throughout the world. In his first season as head coach/general manager, Healey led the injury-plagued
team to a 19-21 record, a 58% increase in wins over the 1997-98 season. In the team’s second season,
Healey led the Blast to a 26-18 record, the franchise’s first Division title since 1993-94 and the team’s first
trip to the postseason since the 1997 campaign. The Blast advanced to the League semifinals in Healey’s
last two seasons as coach.
In addition to improving the team’s performance on the field, Healey, along with Blast owner Ed Hale, was
instrumental in the resurgence of the Blast’s community involvement and outreach program. Healey has
seen to it that the team’s community involvement increases each year and that the Blast remain
Baltimore’s most fan-friendly professional sports team.
Before joining the Blast, Healey spent five years as Head Coach of the USISL Baltimore Bays. He led the
Bays to five division championships, three consecutive league titles and was named USISL "Coach of the
Year" three consecutive seasons. His accomplishments and dedication to the soccer community were
acknowledged in 2007 when he was inducted into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame.
Healey’s entire family shares his love of soccer - his wife Dawn is Vice President of the Baltimore Beltway
Soccer League and their children, Alison and Pat, were both prominent players in Baltimore youth
programs, high schools and colleges. Alison is a graduate of Catholic High and Goucher College and Pat,
who attended Calvert Hall and Towson University, is a current member of the Baltimore Blast.
Danny Kelly – Head Coach
Blast head coach Danny Kelly retired from professional play at the end of the 2005-06 season,
after winning his third championship as a Blast player. His 14-year playing career included five
All-Star selections, three Championships and the distinction of being one of the most
recognized indoor soccer players in Baltimore and Harrisburg.
Kelly was named head coach of the Blast in May of 2006 after serving as the interim head
coach for the last five games of the 2005-06 regular season and leading the team to the 2006
Championship. In his first full year in the position, he coached the team to a 15-15 record.
He has since led the team to Championships in 2008, 2009, and 2013 while including
championship appearances in 2011 and 2012. Kelly boasts a 115-58 regular season record, a
16-7 postseason record and was named MISL Coach of the Year both in 2011 and 2013. He
was also named the 2009 NISL Coach of the Year.
Career Highlights
Kelly began his professional indoor soccer career with the Harrisburg Heat during the 1991- 92
season after the Heat drafted him in the Territorial Round of the 1991 draft (fourth overall pick).
He played for the Heat until the 1998-99 season when Ed Hale and Kevin Healey took over
control of the Blast and acquired Kelly in a trade. After six seasons with the Heat, Kelly still
ranks in the top five in several Heat all-time categories including first in one-point goals
(78) and fifth in points (528).
Kelly represented the Blast in the 2006 and 2004 MISL All-Star Games and played for the Heat
in the 1996 All-Star Game (after recording a career-high 140 points). He was also voted to play
in the All-Star Games in 2001 and 1999 but did not play due to injuries (groin and ankle,
respectively).
He still ranks eighth all-time on Baltimore’s points list (329). In his career, he recorded 100 or
more points in three seasons, played in three All-Star Games and earned two All-League
selections (2006 and 1996).

Celebrating 35 Years:
2013-14 Blast Season Review
th
The Blast celebrated the teams historic 30 season in 2009-10 and is proud to keep the
th
tradition going for the 35 season. The Blast played its first ever game in Baltimore on
th
November 29 , 1980 in the then Civic Center (now Royal Farms Arena). The team defeated
Philadelphia, 10-7, that night to kick off what has become 35 years of professional indoor
soccer in Baltimore. No other city in the United States has had a professional soccer team for
30+ consecutive years.
Kelly-Bascome Coaching Tandem:
2013-14 Record: 17-3 Home: 9-1 Away: 8-2
Head coach Danny Keppy and assistant coach Dave Bascome are teaming up behind the
bench to coach the Blast for the ninth straight season. Kelly, who played 14 season of
professional indoor soccer, remains a Baltimore fan favorite, well know to fans and
opponents alike for his work ethic and competitive spirit. Kelly has won Coach of the Year in
2009, 2011, and 2013. Bascome, who played 17 season, retired after the 2008-09 season to
concentrate solely on his coaching duties. He joined Kelly’s staff at the start of the 2006-07
season.
th
The Blast’s 15-8 win in Wichita (11/23/12) was the 100 win of Kelly’s coaching career; the
th
10-6 win over the Wings (12/17/12) was the 100 win of Bascome’s coaching career in
Baltimore.
th
The Baltimore Blast are coming off a season where they went to the playoffs for the 7
straight year. With the best record through the regular season the Blast found themselves
sitting 17-3. After advancing out of the MISL semi finals the Blast came up just short in the
championship round as they went 3-3 in the playoffs and the Missouri Comets won the MISL
championship.
A big part to last season’s success was the play of the Blast defense. Baltimore only allowed
101 points against on the season which was 102 points better than the closest team. This
season the defense will be anchored by veteran Pat Healey and goalkeeper William Vanzela.
Pat Healey ranked second in the league in blocks last season with 31 and also was top 10 in
the league in assists. Goalie William Vanzela backed up his rookie season with even better
numbers leading the MISL is points allowed, save percentage, and wins. To compliment the
strong defense the Blast return Tony Donatelli (48) and Max Ferdinand (43) who both ranked
top 15 in points last season.
Following the season two Blast players were honored by the MISL. William Vanzela was
named to first team All MISL and Diego Zuniga was a member of the MISL All Rookie Team.
Both players will be back in action for 2014.
Baltimore Blast Hall of Fame:
Last year the Hall of Fame gained a new member in Dennison Cabral. He joins original Blast
Head Coach Kenny Cooper, former players Stan Stamenkovic, Mike Stankovic, Tim Wittman,
Bruce Savage, Dave MacWilliams, Joey Fink, Heinz Wirtz, Keith Van Eron, Dominic Mobilio,
Billy Ronson, Richard Chinapoo, Chris Vaccaro, Pat Ercoli, Doug Neely, Dan Counce, Rusty
Troy, and Tarik Walker as well as original MISL Commissioner Earl Foreman.
