The Higher Education Compass - Higher Education
Information Portal
The Higher Education Compass is an online information
portal of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) that can be found
at www.hochschulkompass.de. It provides up-to-date information
concerning opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and
doctoral study, as well as international partnerships between
German higher education institutions and institutions abroad.
How does information get added to the Higher Education
Compass?
All information in the Higher Education Compass is entered and
updated by the higher education institutions themselves. Three
conditions must be satisfied in order for a university to present
information in the Higher Education Compass:
- The institution must be a German state or state-accredited
higher education institution,
- The institution's academic programmes must currently be in
operation,
- The academic programmes must be open to all persons
qualified for higher education entry in Germany.
Studying in Germany
Higher Education Institutions in Germany
The Higher Education Compass offers information on undergraduate
and graduate programmes offered by German higher education
institutions. Undergraduate programmes lead to a first higher
education degree - often called a "bachelor's degree" - which
qualifies holders to enter a profession. Graduate programmes below
the doctoral level, as a rule, require a first degree for admission.
The Higher Education Compass provides a comprehensive overview
of the German higher education landscape. Key information is
available for each institution, such as institutional control, type of
institution, year founded, and general contact information. This
offering is supplemented with the contact information of specific
individuals and offices at the institutions, e.g. in administration,
press offices, student advisory services, etc.
In addition to this detailed information, visitors can download lists
of the German state and state-accredited higher education institutions, the institutions' governing bodies, and the press offices.
A general search function is available for visitors looking for a
preliminary overview of programmes and institutions. The advanced
search function is recommended for those who already have a more
precise idea of what they are looking for, allowing visitors to refine
their search according to geographic location as well as programme
and institutional characteristics.
The information available in the Higher Education Compass
includes:
- Degrees offered
- Admission prerequisites
- Admission restrictions
- Tuition fees
- Enrolment, registration, and application deadlines
Earning a Doctorate in Germany
Higher education institutions in Germany with the right to confer
doctoral degrees offer a variety of opportunities to earn a doctorate.
The Higher Education Compass collects information about these
doctoral opportunities, and presents them in a way that is organised
and easy to search.
In addition to the extensive overview of doctoral offerings in
Germany, information is provided concerning the respective doctoral
requirements and regulations. These are, of course, also easy to
search using the Higher Education Compass' convenient search
fields.
International Partnerships at German Higher Education
Institutions
The Higher Education Compass provides an overview of the
international partnerships and agreements that German higher
education institutions have with international higher education
institutions and scientific institutions. Multiple search functions
allow visitors to filter partnerships and agreements by:
- German institutions of higher education,
- international higher education institutions, or
- country.
It is also possible to search for a specific international cooperation
with a German institution of higher education.
