meter high… This building of the Belgian civil Engineering
must be seen very close.

GODS, GENIES, DEMONS OF ANCIENT
EGYPT (FROM MAY TO NOVEMBER)
Sometimes familiar, sometimes frightening,
often strange and complex, Egyptian deities
have continuously – and ever since ancient
times – fascinated us. And yet no major
exhibition so far has been dedicated to them.
This exhibition will try to answer the following
questions: What is a god? What does the
Egyptian word really mean? Why choose to
sometimes represent the deities as a human,
as an animal or as a hybrid? Great gods
but also anonymous powers (which does not
mean unknown), diffuse forces with vague
features, unidentified entities, god as objects,
personifications of concepts – are the many
attempts for a metaphorical explanation of
the universe and natural phenomena. Within
this dynamic, what positions can genies and
demons occupy? In this fascinating struggle
between the organized Creation and Chaos,
what roles do they play?
By setting off to meet Osiris, Anubis, Hathor,
Sobek and Isis, by walking into the world of
myths, gods, genies and demons of Egypt,
visitors will be invited to question and open
themselves up to a different way of thinking.
This international exhibition will gather
over 200 objects (statues, reliefs, amulets,
jewellery, sarcophagus ...) from Belgian
public institutions (Federal, from Flanders,
Brussels or Wallonia), but also foreign
(Louvre Museum, Allard Pierson Museum,
August Kestner Museum ...).

THE EGYPTIAN GODS IN GEEK
CULTURE (1975-2015) (FROM MAY TO
NOVEMBER)
PROGRAM :
Although many exhibitions have considered
the reasons for the fascination that ancient
Egypt exerts on the general public, they
often stop their study in 1960 with the
movie Cleopatra by Joseph L. Mankiewicz
starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
This exhibition will propose to address and
further develop this fascination in recent
years through cinema (Stargate, The Mummy
Returns ...) but also through comic strips and
comics (Thor, Batman, Mighty Isis ...).
DURATION:
+/- 2 hours - closed on
Mondays.
Costumes and artefacts from movies and
series and copies of comics will be placed in
dialogue with the gods and myths of Egypt,
thus discerning fact from fiction.

CAPACITY:
Minimum 10 persons
The exploration of the Bois-du-Luc Mine Site reveals a whole landscape
shaped by and for work. We invite you to a pleasant discovery stroll
of an exceptional worker’s village where welfare improvements and
social control of the workers interact. Here the miners live (housing
estate), obtain food (grocery, butchery), look after themselves (hospice,
hospital), relax (village hall, bandstand, leisure facilities), educate
themselves (schools, library) and pray Saint Barbe church). This
village tells us much about how work led to social interactions. The
Ecomuseum of Bois-du-Luc and the Mine Museum both present several
opportunities to discover the mine site (Mine village, Saint-Emmanuel
pit, offices, etc).

Of the eight hydraulic boat lifts
ever built in the world, between
the end of the 19th and the
beginning of the 20th centuries,
the four boat lifts of the historic
Canal du Centre are the only
ones that still remain in their
original working condition.Each
of these monuments compensate
for a difference in level of about
17 meter thanks to a single
energy source: water.
Remarkable example of workers

The Bois-du-Luc mine site is an
exceptional illustration of the
industrial era. It shows more than
2 Ha of heritage with different

SOMETHING’S
BREWING
IN THE WATERS
01/04/2016 > 30/10/2016
From Tuesday to Sunday
THE ST-FEUILLIEN BREWERY
Come and visit the facilities of the
St-Feuillien Brewery and discover
the history of a widely celebrated
beer and the pride of a whole
region. The St-Feuillien Brewery
was founded in 1873 by the Friart
family. At that time, it was located
at the entrance of Le Roeulx and
light beers were produced there.
In 1920, the manufacture was
transferred into more modern
buildings that still house the
majority of facilities today. With
the 5th generation on its way,
the Friart family is pursuing the
manufacture of a wide range of
beers, including the St-Feuillien
and the Grisette, thus proving
its wish to anchor itself in its
regional history and perpetuate
the tradition of the area.

4 boat lifts still in service!
Of the eight hydraulic boat lifts
ever built in the world, between
the end of the 19th and the
beginning of the 20th centuries,
the four boat lifts of the historic
Canal du Centre are the only
ones that still remain in their
original working condition. Each
of these monuments compensate
for a difference in level of about
17 meter thanks to a single
energy source: water.
A visit to the brewery will give
you the opportunity to discover
the different steps of a brew
day and to taste an excellent St
Feuillien Triple served from a
Magnum bottle. Then you will go
to the Mariemont Estate where
you can see different prestigious
collections such as the Egyptian,
Greek and Roman collections, the
local history or a huge collection
of Tournai porcelain.
Since 1873, the Friart family
has been brewing various beers,
among others, the St-Feuillien.
The brewery was then located
in Le Roeulx and different light
beers were produced there. In
1920, the equipments were

are exhibited, most of which were
assembled by Raoul Warocqué, a
rich industralist with a passion for

that the permanent collection
will take you from Greece to the

Guided excursion into the
Carnival of La Louvière
Sunday 6th March 2016
The Carnival of Binche
7th, 8th and 9th February 2016
The Carnival of La Louvière
6th, 7th and 8th March 2016
THE CARNIVAL OF BINCHE IS A LIVING AND
EXCEPTIONAL HERITAGE, A POPULAR , HUMAN
AND SOCIAL EVENT. IT HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS
A “MASTERPIECE OF THE ORAL AND INTANGIBLE
HERITAGE OF HUMANITY ” BY UNESCO IN 2003.
THE CARNIVAL OF LA LOUVIÈRE IS CALLED LAETARE,
AFTER THE LATIN VERB MEANING “TO ENJOY” (the
introit at mass on the fourth Sunday of Lent begins Laetare
Jerusalem, Rejoice Jerusalem). It lasts three days, Sunday to
Tuesday, and takes place in the middle of Lent. The Gilles
are out on all three days, stomping to the rhythm of their
music and distributing oranges to the passers-by. Giant
puppets and various other groups also take part in the
parades and festivities.
This folkloric event, coming from a long oral tradition, is a
real rite that gives the participants the feeling to be unique.
For the inhabitants, and according to the famous quote,
“there is no place like Binche in the world”.
During a few months, the inhabitants and the City prepared
their Carnival, in a real communion, and it is obviously the
most important moment in the life of the City of Binche. The
next Carnival will happen on the 7th, 8th ans 9th February
2016 with as highlight the journey of more than 1000 Gilles
on Shrove Tuesday. This preparation process requires a lot
of coordination for a lot of people : the association for the
defense of Folklore, the association for the defense of the
Shrove Monday, the committees of the Carnival societies,
the Nonprofit Organization Carnival of Binche, de City of
Binche, the Police, the assistance services,…
Through this website you will find all the historical, folkloric,
and practical information linked to the Carnival of Binche.
You will also discover the photo galleries and the videos of
the Carnival festivities and its preparations.
