Please RSVP to cranfordchamber @comcast.net ECRWSS PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID PHILA PA 191 PERMIT NO.7575 908-272-6114 Issue 24 • December 2015 CRANFORD ROTARY PROJECT BENEFITS PATIENTS AT TRINITAS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER A community service project orchestrated by the Rotary Club of Cranford resulted in the donation of over 100 movie DVDs to both young and old patients served by Trinitas Regional Medical Center. Approximately 125 DVDs will augment the recreation program at Trinitas’ Child/Adolescent Behavioral Health inpatient and outpatient program, and the hospital’s Residential Treatment Center. In addition, senior patients served by the Hospital Elder-Life Program (HELP) at Trinitas will benefit from the DVDs. The HELP program works to prevent the cognitive and memory decline often experienced by seniors during hospitalization. “Each month, the Cranford Rotary Club runs a different community service project designed to help people close to home,” explains Maureen Strazdon, President, Rotary Club of Cranford. “This project was easy – everyone has old DVDs that are gathering dust,” notes Joseph Carney, Chair, Cranford Rotary Service Projects, who added, “We placed a collection box in the Cranford Community Center and then put out the word. Soon, the box was full.” Adds Strazdon, “Rotary’s motto is Service Above Self, and our projects reflect that focus on service, particularly to our community. We felt that Trinitas exemplifies that same emphasis on service to our local area, to both young and old, and so they were a natural choice." The Rotary Club of Cranford was established in 1923 and provides diverse programs that support education, and other community services. Past beneficiaries of Rotary support include Cranford Schools and Scholarship Recipients, Cranford First Aid Squad, Cranford Family Care, Cranford Cerebral Palsy League, Cranford United Way, Cranford Historical Society, Cranford PAL and the Rotary International Foundation. The Cranford Rotary Club meets Thursday morning at 7:45am at the Cranford Community Center. Any business or professional, active or retired, is cordially invited to attend our meeting. For additional (above) Cranford Rotary President Maureen Strazdon (left) and Service Project Chair Joe Carney present over 100 DVDs to Johanna Thomas, Elder Life Intervention Clinician at Trinitas Regional Medical Center. information, please contact Membership Chair Rich Feder at 908- 500-4318. Thanks to the support of the Thomas Glasser Foundation, Inc., Trinitas participates in a special National Hospital and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) program that offers enhanced patient care and other services to veterans. To address the needs of current veterans and the growing number of veterans in the next 10 to 20 years, the interface with the VA and the NHPCO gives veterans care with the dignity, recognition, and gratitude they deserve. "The new grant-funded program supports the ongoing measures Trinitas uses each day to meet the health care needs of service men and women while they are under our care," explains Magie Cruz, RN, MSN, Director of Palliative Care. "This program is another way that Trinitas doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals members, as well as our volunteers, respond to the needs of veterans, their families and caregivers. It's a natural complement to our existing Palliative Care program and a fitting way to treat our valued veterans who deserve everyone's respect and gratitude." Johanna Thomas, Intervention Clinician of Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), at Trinitas works closely with Trinitas staff and volunteers to identify vets when they are admitted for care. "Upon admission to the hospital, we ask patients if they are military veterans and if they'd like information about veterans' benefits. We are also proud to give them a formal acknowledgment of their service to our country." The Behavioral Health and Psychiatry Department of Trinitas makes a valuable contribution to the mental health needs of veterans who suffer from a range of mental health issues, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), all of which negatively impact their quality of life. Linda Reynolds, Director of Adult Outpatient Services, explains: “In partnership with the Elizabeth Veterans Administration (VA), Project Pride for Veterans is a counseling and case management program. One of our two licensed social workers is an active reservist and our Advance Practice Nurse is retired from the Air Force. Their common bond with veterans is so important to the positive patient outcomes we strive for in this program. The Project Pride program provides individual, group, and family psychiatric services designed to reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life for veterans and their families. Ultimately, in partnership with the VA, we direct our energies toward helping veterans live the life they want and deserve.” CRANFORD MONTHLY • Page 9 • December 732-931-1776 77 Central Ave. • Clark, NJ 07066 www.paragonnj.com • 20 Rotating Craft Beer Taps • Seasonal Menus • Sunday Brunch •NFL Ticket & Private Parties FOOD NETWORK'S CHOPPED CHAMPION $5 OFF Chef Eric LeVine Purchase of $25 $10 OFF Not valid w/ other offers or discounts. BOOK CLUB APPROACHING 100TH BOOK READ Our Book Club, Books Unite Friends, was founded in October 2006 at the Roselle Golf Club. It consists of nine golfers, mainly teachers, nurses, and businesswomen! Each member recommends one book for the calendar year. It is highly suggested that this person first read the book to eliminate "word of mouth" or rely on the opinions of Best Sellers Lists! After a lively respectable group discussion each person then rates the book from 1 to 5 as well as share their final comments and insights! It should be also noted that monthly meetings are conducted in a restaurant which eliminates all household and dining pressures for a hostess! For further information contact Fran Housten at 908-709-7272 or email cranfordlibrary@gmail.com. After reading 86 books, East of Eden by John Steinbeck received our highest rating of a perfect 5.0! Our holiday meeting in December encourages each member to bring a mystery gift that related to the previous year's literature!!! Over the past nine years this fun challenge has truly reflected the intellectual creativity of the group. We are anxiously approaching our 100th book and are considering several ways to celebrate our extremely accomplished endeavor. Our bonded group is always on the search for that one special "WOW" book!!!! Therefore, we always look forward to other Book Club inputs and suggestions!!! For the past fifteen years the presiding Governor of New Jersey has been honoring these brave service members. Moreover, the past five years, retired Gunnery Sgt. Mario Monaco has served as Master of Ceremony and program coordinator along with his brother Sgt. Dominick Monaco. This entire occasion was carried out with military precision and respect to those Marines who have fought our countries many battles, in the air, on land, and sea protecting the citizens of this great nation. The event began with a bugle call to sound attention by retired Sgt. Mark Paradis of the Marine Band, San Diego promptly at 1200 hours. A brief welcome was given by the Master of Ceremony with a crowd pleasing reassurance to the swiftness of the proceedings due to the cold gusty winds. Chaplain Wilfredo Rodriguez; Veteran Coordinator for Rutgers FOCUS Wellness Center requested the audience allow a moment of silence for the terrorist attacks in Pairs. He then gave a heartfelt prayer for all those who had gone before us and those who are still in the fight for us. This was followed by the parade of color guard lead by Chief Warrant Officer Nick D` Andrea and an inspiring rendition of our nation’s anthem by Vietnam veteran, Sgt. William Mead. With the breeze still threatening to topple the Fallen Comrade Table, Doc Jay Boxwell Jr.; Commander Cranford Post 335 NJ VFW POW/MIA Chairman began his ceremonial Kathleen Gwaldis EXPERIENCE, COMMITMENT INTEGRITY, RESULTS Full-Service Realtor for 29 years. At the same time, Bagpiper; Garrett McKenzie of the FBI accompanied by drummer L/Cpl Mike Magliacane performed a very poignant version of Amazing Grace. It brought tears to many eyes in the audience, remembering loved ones who are no longer with us. They played as the Cranford Commander continued the traditional table ceremony script and explanation of the ‘battlefield cross’. Afterwards, the ceremony turned to a lighter mood by introducing the Distinguished Guest, Staff Sgt. Rose Katz Brotzky who gave everyone a chuckle in describing her days in Corps. As did Mr. Jack McGeevey in receiving Morris County’s Unsung Hero award when he stated, I’m so glad to be here considering I have one foot in the grave and one on a banana peel.” He went on to express his gratitude for the award, a watch, and for the US Marines. At the ceremony’s conclusion, the traditional cutting of the cake was performed by the young at heart Marine; Sgt. Rose Katz Brotzky at 29 years of age and Marine L/Cpl Ben Gurary from Golf Company 2/25 at the ripe old age of twenty-two! Sgt. Mark Paradis closed the ceremony with a solemn and patriotic rendition of TAPS as guests and Marine league detachment members exited the area for the chow line. During the rest of the day the halls of the governor’s mansion were filled with laughter, solidarity, and stores of military service. In one room, various detachment members from across our state were swapping combat memories while appreciating the architecture of the manor where they were enjoying their buffet luncheon. So many camera phones and flashes you would have thought it was a premiere to a Hollywood movie. But these are no actors or actresses; these are the few, these are the proud. In another room, several Marine men and women were in a tight circle singing all three verses of the Marine Corps Hymn, with loud voices, with strong hearts, with determined spirits. Because as the adage goes, “You don’t join the Marines…You become one! OOHRAH! VFW COMMANDER’S CORNER November was a very busy month for the post. We hosted our very first community flag retirement ceremony. This ceremony was the first of what I hope to be of many ongoing partnerships with the community. The event was a collaboration of Boy Scout Troops 75 and 80, the Police and Fire Department Honor Guards as well as the VFW Post Color Guard. Students from Hillside Ave School, Mr. Maloney's class also participated in the ceremony as well providing the Pledge of Allegiance. The event was well attended by members of the community and other VFW Posts. Garwood Home Depot Donated the Fire Pit for the Ceremony and Dryer's Farm provided refreshments for after the event. The event was a respectful way to retire flags from our community. The large flag from Eastman Plaza was also retired after its long service to our community. We raised a new 15 by 20 foot flag to serve as the center piece of our community’s plaza. November also saw the VFW hold its annual Veterans Day Breakfast. This is a stable in the VFW calendar of public events that support our local veterans. This event was well attended by many local veterans. The Key speaker was Command Master Chief Ron Herman from Naval Weapons Station Earle. The Master Chief spoke of his military service and what Veterans Day means to him. The event was capped off by our local leaders from the town, county and state reflecting on what the impact veterans have had on the community at large. I was also proud to present Past President of our Auxiliary Noreen Cannone a Certificate of Appreciation for her years of outstanding service to not only the VFW but to the local community. We as members of the Post were also present at our local schools on Veterans Day talking to students about our experiences and how it has an impact on us today. Vincent Dooley a Marine and an Iraq veteran was a guest speaker at Orange Ave school, While Joe Delgrippo, Hanif Davis and Myself spoke to students at the high School about our experiences. All of our visits were well received by the students and faculty at our local school. The visits were rewarding to both the students and us!!! We look forward to the holiday season and please do not forget our troops deployed overseas… I wish you all happy holidays and fair winds and following seas….. Commander Jay Jay E.
