Front Drive-Air Cooled
Front Drive - Air-Cooled. Direct drive, driven off the pulley end (Type 1 only) for standard aircraft configuration. The Front Drive engine turns counter clockwise from the
cockpit in a tractor configuration. Wooden props - ONLY - are used.
Reduction Drive - Air-Cooled. Driven off the pulley end of the crankshaft. Available
in 1.7:1 and 2.0:1 Drive Ratios. Drive Ratio 1.7:1 is for 72” to 74” props and the Drive
Ratio 2.0:1 is for those aircraft requiring 80” to 84”
props. The Reduction Drive can deliver over 100 takeoff
horsepower. The prop turns counter clockwise from the
cockpit (tractor installation). Use of wood, composite
or adjustable props. Fits Type 1 VW Only.
Reduction Drive-Air Cooled
Flywheel Drive - Air Cooled. The Flywheel Drive is
the lightest direct drive VW based engine offered in
the market place period, weighing in at a mere 158
lbs. This package uses a top mounted starter, 35 amp
3 phase alternator and has the option for electronic
dual ignition.

Orders can be placed via the World Wide Web with the use of our Shopping Cart at www.gpasc.com. Or via the mail with
the use of a Money Order, Certified Check or enclose your MasterCard or Visa credit card number, expiration date and
CV2 code. Western Union Transfers are also accepted (call for required information). Personal checks and bank drafts are
welcome but will delay your order until your personal check clears your bank (7 to 14 days). Orders may be telephoned
or faxed by using the numbers above. All Nebraska residents and any orders that are picked up in NE will be charged 7%
sales tax.

Every effort has been made to proof read our catalog for errors in pricing and information prior to publishing. Please
recognize that mistakes can be made and that prices do change. If you feel an error has been made in pricing, please call

Shopping Cart.
We stock about 93% of the items in our catalog, but those items manufactured in speciality shops, such as mounts, exhaust systems, fiberglass products and those items manufactured to adapt our products with other manufacturers parts,
are not kept in stock. This is due to the limited sales of these items (i.e., they are only ordered once a year). If an item is
back ordered, we will do the best we can to expedite your order. Orders requiring machine work take a minimum of two
weeks “In House,” before return shipment.
RETURNS
We ask that you do not order parts that you do not intend to keep. To offset the direct cost of handling returned merchandise that has been correctly shipped by us, a 20% restocking fee will be charged. Exchanges or refunds will be allowed
up “Until 30 days after date of sale.” There are NO REFUNDS allowed on engine kits, parts where machine work has been
completed, printed materials, electronic kits, or any part that has been USED, MODIFIED or INSTALLED by the customer.
Special order parts are not returnable. Please call prior to returning merchandise. A “Return Authorization: Number”
is required to return merchandise back to us. Merchandise returned without an “RA” Number will be returned to the
customer. For returned items, the customer pays for shipping costs and will not be reimbursed for any shipping costs.
Returns without an “RA” will be returned to the customer at the customers expense as we will refuse delivery.
Warranty Information
We value you as a customer and we will make every effort to please you when a problem is encountered. Our business
is selling “experimental aircraft parts.” There is no warranty for these parts, implied or intended. Great Plains Aircraft will
not replace any parts on an engine that are damaged due to over heating. When a customer of Great Plains Aircraft accepts an item from Great Plains Aircraft for use on their homebuilt aircraft, this acceptance by the customers, insures the
quality of it. The homebuilder is ultimately responsible for any parts installed on their aircraft, certified or not.
Great Plains Aircraft will not be responsible for any incidental or consequential damages including direct or indirect labor,
lodging, repair, medical or legal expenses incurred by a customer, or any agent of the customer. We sell “experimental,
non-FAA approved aircraft parts,” as they pertain to use on homebuilt aircraft. The user is responsible for the entire “RISK”
of quality and performance of their homebuilt aircraft. When a customer accepts a part from Great Plains Aircraft for use
on their aircraft, this acceptance and installation of that part by the customer for use, insures the quality of that part.

INVENTORY
Great Plains Aircraft maintains the largest supply of conversion parts for converting VW engines for aircraft. In addition, we stock standard engine parts such
as cases, pistons and cylinders, heads, bearings, etc. We stock 93% of the parts
listed in this catalog. From items as small as dowel pins to items as large as
complete engine kits, we can supply your engine parts requirements from our
vast inventory selection. Estimates and shipping quotes are valid for 14 days.
SHIPPING
Orders are shipped via United Parcel Service (UPS), US Postal Service (USPS)
and DB Schenker. Normal service by ground is 1 to 5 working days - depending
upon your location in the USA. Most plans, books and videos are sent by Priority
Mail via USPS Prices listed in the this catalog do not include shipping charges.
Shipping quotes are valid for 14 days. Actual shipping costs will be charged to
the customer at the time of shipment. Crated items will incur a crating fee.
From the main bearing sets to complete engine kits - Great Plains Aircraft and
our shipping partners can insure you a cost effective, insured and timely delivery.
Please Note: We are not responsible for third party shipments. We will ship
to the freight forwarder designated, but any loss or damage will be the sole
responsibility of the purchaser. Ownership of goods transfers to the customer
upon shipping.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
We specialize in shipping of international orders. Whether you are based in
Argentina or Zimbabwe, we can get your order to you in a prompt, insured, and
cost effective manner. Many smaller packages can be shipped by insured mail via
the United States Postal Service, either by air or by surface. DB Schenker, and
UPS have an excellent overseas delivery network. Larger packages are shipped by
overseas contract carriers with full insurance. Be sure to include your province,
country and city code when inquiring about shipping costs. Also the desired
service, i.e., Express, Air Mail or Surface. Shipping quotes are valid for 14 days.
Actual shipping costs will be charged to the customer at the time of shipment.

We realize that not all of our customers are certified auto/aircraft engine builders! In fact very few are. Parts that may require installation instructions are
furnished with them. Prop hubs, U-build pushrods, piston and cylinder sets,

Background, company overview and products
Great Plains Aircraft has been commercially selling VW
engines, engine kits, and conversion parts continuously
since 1982. This year (2014) we mark our 32nd year in
business. In the USA, only RevMaster has been selling VW
conversions for sport aircraft for a longer period than us.
We have seen many companies that have sold VW conversions, and or parts, or plans come and go in the U.S. in
those past 32+ years. To name a few: Able, HAPI, Mosler,
TEC, Barker, Monnett Experimental, INAV, Christeen Aero,
Duty, R.J Huggins, Limbach and others. Why we remain in
business and all these other companies or individuals have
come and gone in 31 years, we will let you, the consumers
continue to decide.
About the company. Many customers are surprised
that Great Plains Aircraft Supply Co., Inc. is a family operated business by two individuals, Steve and Linda Bennett.
Steve handles shipping, receiving, ordering, design, technical questions and research of new products, etc. Steve
received his private pilot’s license in 1971 flying a Cessna
150. Since then he
has accumulated
over 3500 hours
of VW flight time
in a KR1, KR1.5
and several KR2’s.
With a desire to
continue his education, he is also
an HVAC certified
technician.
Linda answers the phone, completes order input,
accounting, the design of our catalog
and maintains the web site. Linda has
an associate’s degree in business. Prior
to joining Steve at Great Plains, Linda
worked at AT&T and Northwestern Bell
as a Manager. She was also an owner
of a print shop.
Being a small company, one wears many hats. The positive
side is that with every order, we strive to fill it and ship it in
a manner that we would expect from any other company
that we would do business with. Do we make occasional
mistakes? Sure. But we strive to treat the customer as we

Great Plains Aircraft has maintained it’s position in the
market place because our company offers a wide range
of time proven products at reasonable prices, we have
the experience and knowledge to help our customers
troubleshoot problems with their Great Plains conversions,
and we maintain this with a minimum overhead. It’s the
overhead that dooms many small companies when the
market is slow or flooded with short term competition.
The engines - Steve Bennett puts his 33+ years of engine building experience into every engine package and
parts that we ship out. We offer a full range of engines
and parts. Engines can be ordered as a complete engine
package, an engine kit or as individual parts. We can assist
you in the decision process by recommending specific
accessories to meet your aircraft power requirements.
The most popular engine configuration is the: Front
Drive - DIRECT DRIVE engine. This is driven off the pulley
end of the crankshaft. Displacements from 1600cc up to
2276cc are available. We have developed an engine package that includes the long block engine kit, 4220 Magneto
Accessory Package, Secondary Ignition Package and a float
bowl carb for $5,800 to $6,900.
The Flywheel Drive Engine is the least expensive engine configuration sold. An aluminum prop hub is bolted
to a custom flywheel that is a little larger than a stock VW
flywheel. The starter is mounted on top of the engine,
laying over the engine case. It utilizes a 35 amp 3 phase
alternator, mechanical fuel pump, and optional dual
electronic ignition. This is also the lightest VW conversion
sold with the fore mentioned options, weighing in at 158
lbs. for a 2180cc engine. (A hand start direct drive engine
with single electronic ignition, but no starter, weighs in
at only 146 lbs.) This Flywheel Drive Engine also uses a
bed type engine mount. This engine can be produced in
displacements from 1600cc through 2276cc.
The Reduction Drive Engines have really opened up
the range of aircraft that can use VW power. Direct drive
VW’s are limited to a 62” diameter prop because of tip
speed and will produce about 200 to 225 lbs. of thrust
(depending upon prop manufacturer). The reduction drive
engines can turn prop diameters from 72” with a 1.7:1
ratio and up to a 84” prop with a 2.0:1 ratio. Static thrust
with a 72” prop is about 350 lbs. The 2.0:1 ratio with a
84” prop will deliver about 450 lbs. of thrust.

ENGINES & PRODUCTS
The re-drive/reduction engines are available as an Engine
and Accesssory Package, Reduction Long Block Kit, or
you can purchase just the drive itself and build up your
own engine. The most popular engine sizes are 1915cc,
2180cc and 2276cc.
The Reduction Drive Engine Package features starter, 35
amp 3 phase alternator, 009 type distributor, choice of
drive ratio, top mounted Weber carburetor and intake
manifold, accessory case and remote oil cooler from
$6,150 to $6,595. Optional dual electronic ignition packages are available. The redrive VW engines are used in
many of the WW1 type aircraft, several of the Cub look-a
likes, Kolb Mark 3 and a few trike’s (flying wings). They
can deliver outstanding take off and rate of climb, when
matched to the correct aircraft.
The Products. For starters, we offer a complete range
of engine kits, drives, accessories and individual parts for
sport aircraft that is unmatched by any company in the
U.S. and worldwide. Bearings, cams, stud kits, heads,
cases, accessory case kits, cool tins, carburetors, secondary ignition systems, magnetos, plugs, wire sets, four different prop hub styles, instruments, piston and cylinder
sets - you get the idea. If it’s a product for VW power, we
probably carry it.
So what makes our engine different?
Ok, let’s examine our 2180cc and 2276cc direct drive
engines with dual ignition... As these two are the most
popular engines we sell.
The Crankshaft - The heart of the engine is the crankshaft. It has to be able to absorb, dissipate and transmit.
Our 82mm forged steel crankshaft is made specifically for
aircraft use. It features a rectangle flat milled key for the
prop hub. The crankshaft has a 3 degree taper on it that
is mated to our Force One prop hub. The bolt that retains
the hub is a fine thread bolt that is 3.5” long. The threads
in the crankshaft are machined in the crankshaft about
3” down from the end. For the first 1.250” the thread is
relieved so the pulling or retention loads is placed at the
rear of the thread in the larger diameter of the crankshaft.
This crankshaft is made specifically for the rigors of driving a propeller. It is not an “out of the box” automotive
crankshaft as used by one competitor. In the 20+ years this
current crankshaft design has been manufactured, it has
never suffered a failure on normally asperiateted engines.

Force One Prop Hub and Main Bearing - While
not totally unique to aviation, it is in many respects when
combined with our crankshaft. We recognized from early
on from a number of crankshaft/prop hub failures with
82mm crankshafts and shrink fit and short tapered hubs,
that perhaps it was not the best way to build stroker engines for longevity. (Note: There is further infomation
on our web site.)
The Force One Prop Hub rides in a bearing that the case
is machined out for. The Force One Bearing is pressure
lubricated, utilizes 2 seals, one for dust and one for oil.
The total bearing area is 4 to 5 times what a standard VW
#4 bearing’s surface area is. But the important point is the
hub is supported in the bearing instead of being attached
forward of the bearing, as is the case when using a shrink
fit or standard tapered prop hub. As the fit between the
hub and the crank is on a 3 degree taper, it can be removed
repeatedly without wearing out either tapered surface.
With the shrink fit hub, the .002” interference fit will
eventually erode with multiple removals.
With our Force One Hub, we can still use the brass distributor drive gear to drive a secondary or primary ignition
system. Another competitors crankshaft does not have the
brass gear on the crankshaft and cannot use a primary or
secondary ignition in the distributor hole.
2180cc & 2276CC Camshafts - Our camshafts, while
based on a popular design for automotive use, are custom ground to our specifications for aircraft use. They are
designed to provide maximum horsepower and torque in
the 3000 to 3400 rpm band. We keep the duration low
and add enough lift to pack the cylinder as full as possible.
The cam lets the engine idle without lopping and offers
quick acceleration without stumbling. Other manufacturers use standard “off the shelf” automotive camshafts.
All of our 2180cc and 2276cc kits come with new lifters
that are matched to work with our camshaft. These kits
also feature 5/16” steel pushrods (no aluminum here for
higher lift cams) and new rockerarm assemblies.
Most of the other hard components will be standard
from whomever you purchase your engine kit from. The
case, pistons and cast steel cylinders, oil pumps, cylinder
heads, gasket sets and the like, all come from a small
source of manufacturers and will be pretty common to
all conversions.

ACCESSORIES & ONE LAST TRY...
Accessories - This is another area where we are very
different from some of our competitors. Starting with the
accessory case, we supply a fully “enclosed” accessory
case. This simply means the flywheel is enclosed in the
case. One competitors X case features an open rotating
flywheel. With our accessory case the starter position can
be ordered in the 12:00, 6:00 or 9:00 position.
Secondary Ignition - We offer a wide variety of secondary ignition systems that will fit just about any application. Our standard low height secondary ignition system
(only 1.310” tall) fits in the standard VW distributor hole.
This ignition system is the “standard” secondary on most
of our engines. This system must be in the off position
when starting the engine.
We have a standard 35 amp 3 PHASE alternator
that is mounted inside the accessory case. Two of our
competitors have only a 20 amp single phase alternator
for standard equipment.
Oil Pump Secondary Ignition - This ignition system replaces the oil pump cover plate. The bottom drive
gear of the pump is modified and a shaft engages the
gear. This system uses the same components as our low
height system.
Almost 32 years ago we started using the geared
starter which you now see as standard on most VW
sport aircraft conversion. This lightweight 8.5 lbs. starter
has an internal start solenoid, eliminating the need for an
external one.
Our flywheel is unique to the industry. We are the only
company we know of that builds and uses a light weight
100% steel flywheel, weighing in at only 5.5 lbs. Other companies use a combination of aluminum and steel to keep
the weight down. We can boast that the steel flywheels
have never had a hub failure. Aluminum and aluminum/
steel ones can’t say that.
Ignition Systems - Primary Ignition. Yes, we still
use them - what some competitors describe as old and antique - a magneto. But there is a good practical reason that
is lost on some. The Slick 4316 and 4220 magnetoS,
do not need a power source, do not have external rotating
magnets, they are easy to hook up, and most important,
you can start the engine by hand if the battery fails. With
one competitor’s ignition system, if the battery is dead
or the starter is broke you won’t go anywhere until you
replace one or both. Their engine has to rotate 200+ rpm
to start the engine. No starter, no battery - no starting.
The low height secondary, oil pump secondary and Compu-Fire ignition systems all feature dual redundant coil
packs and can fire spark plug gaps up to .042”, if required.

building of an engine to fit different airframes. By custom
tailoring the engine to the airframe, the aircraft will meet
or in many cases exceed the performance specifications

their “perfect” engine.

The 009 distributor can be used as a primary or as a
secondary ignition system. When the cap is replaced with
our 90º distributor cap it makes a lower height/attractive
installation. The 009 can be upgraded to electronic ignition if desired.

FRONT DRIVE VW ENGINES
Great Plains Aircraft Front Drive Long Block Kits have set
the industry standard for the last 32 years. Our long block
engine kits are available from 1600cc up through 2276cc.
All engine kits feature proven, time tested components!
The NEW magnesium engine case is used in all of our
kits. Engines up through the 1915cc use a NEW stock,
forged 69mm CW crankshaft and are outfitted with
either 85.5, 92, or 94mm pistons and cylinders. The
correct camshaft is provided for the corresponding
engine size to optimize the engine’s performance between 3200 to 3600 rpm. The new dual port cylinder
heads are cc’d between 50-55cc’s and are leak tested.
All of our kits come with dual port cylinders heads and
are fitted with stainless steel intake and exhaust valves.
All major machine work that is necessary for the assembly of your engine has been completed for you when you purchase
one of our engine kits. Depending upon the engine size, this may include: machining the case and heads for 92mm or 94mm
cylinders, clearanced for stroke, and boring the #4 main bearing for the Force One Main Bearing, drilling and taping the #4
main bearing oil feed hole (this is completed for all cases). Drilling and taping for the oil temperature sender is optional.
All of our engines ship with our easy to read and understand “Type 1 VW Engine Assembly Manual” and DVD Set.
This manual was written by us, specifically for the assembly of our Front Drive engine kits. This 64 page manual
and corresponding DVD’s, provide instructions for each step of the assembly and instructs the builder on how to
assemble the motor and install the accessories. Also included is the formula to determine your compression ratio,
service and maintenance procedures, and many tips on how to set up and operate the engine correctly. (The assembly manual is also used for the assembly of re-drive and flywheel drive engines, but is not specific to them.)
We have also incorporated a number of premium upgrades in all of our long block engine kits. This includes a
4140 steel cylinder head stud kit which is twice as strong than the stock VW stud kit, I beam connecting rods
on stroker engines, new dual port cylinder heads and new forged rocker arms. All parts are 100% NEW!

FRONT DRIVE VW ENGINES
All of the Great Plains Front Drive Long Block Engine Kits
are furnished with the correct prop hub and any necessary machine work to the crankshaft and prop hub has
been completed. Engines from 1600cc up to 1915cc use
our Shrink Fit Prop Hub. Our 2180cc through 2276cc engines use our Force One Prop Hub and Main Bearing. The
crankshaft we use in our 2180cc and 2276cc engines is
superior to any other crankshaft used in VW powered aircraft! Check our web site (gpasc.com) for the complete
history of Prop Hubs and Crankshafts. Our 82mm crankshaft is made from forged steel, machined, magnafluxed
twice, nitrided and balanced. The business end of the
crankshaft features a 1/2” fine thread versus the 20mm
thread found on the standard crank on our competitor’s
crank. The woodruff key for the prop hub is only .090”
deep. Some competitor’s stroker cranks are standard
aftermarket crankshafts built for use in automobiles.
They are made to deliver power off the flywheel end of
the crankshaft and were never intended for the rigors
of driving a prop off the pulley end of a stroker engine.

REDUCTION DRIVE SYSTEM
The Series 3 Reduction Drive is available in drive ratios from 1.7:1 up
to 2.0:1. Props used vary from 72” x 40” pitch up to 84” x 56” pitch. It
greatly improves the take off and climb performance of any high drag
Type 1 VW powered aircraft that require more thrust.
On a 2180cc engine with a 1.7:1 drive and a 72” prop, you will see about
350 lbs. of thrust. On a 2.0:1 drive and an 84” prop will pull about 450
lbs. of thrust. You get the idea! (A direct drive Type 1 VW with a 62”
prop will pull about 225 lbs. of thrust.)

TYPE 1 - FLYWHEEL DRIVE engine package
The Great Plains Aircraft Flywheel Drive Packages use the same
high quality components offered in our front and reduction
drive engine kits. The crankshaft is forged from E4340 steel,
balanced, nitrided, shot peened, precision ground and micro
polished (in the 2180cc or 2276cc kits). In the 1835cc & 1915cc,
we use a NEW stock 69mm crankshaft made from 4140 steel.
The engine case is a new dual by-pass case with all required
machine work completed. For the 2180cc or 2276cc kits the
case is opened for 92mm or 94mm cylinders, clearanced for
82–84mm stroke, drilled and tapped for #4 oil feed.
The connecting rods are balanced, bushed, sized center to center for length and cleared for stroker cranks, if needed.
The camshaft has been made to provide the maximum torque at the rpm we use the engine at in aircraft. The pistons
are forged, balanced & graphite coated, new heads, valves etc., and you’re almost ready to go!
We now offer a complete firewall forward package for the Flywheel Drive Kit! The engine mount, exhaust & intake
are designed to fit Bruce King’s new “BK1.3”-an all aluminum single seat aircraft. The firewall forward package will
fit many other homebuilts that have a similiar firewall dimension of the BK1.3.
Why Flywheel Drive? The flywheel drive drives the prop off the #1 main bearing. Many builders consider this
the correct way to drive the prop on a VW (it is only one of three ways and we can’t say one is better than another). It offers a lighter engine at 158 lbs., and the least expensive way to drive the prop on a VW engine. Even
with the oil pump secondary ignition (whichs adds $799.95 to the price), it is the Lightest & Least Expensive
76 HP VW conversion offered in the market today!

The Flywheel Drive/Starter Package provides the
parts necessary to start the engine and drive the
prop. The flywheel is cadmium plated & machined
to accept the anodized 4” extended prop hub. The hub attaches with 6 each, 5/16” (AN5) bolts. The starter mounts on top of the engine with an

TYPE 1 - SHORT BLOCK KITS
Great Plains Aircraft Short Block Engine Kits are available
for all popular displacements. Each kit contains the parts
necessary to build the bottom end of the engine. 1600cc
to 1915cc kits feature a NEW stock 69mm CW crankshaft.
The 2180 or 2276cc kits feature our 82mm crankshaft
that is made specifically for Great Plains Aircraft. This
forged crank features standard rod and main bearing
journals, milled key way for the prop hub. In addition, all
kits include new engine cases, main bearings, cams, oil
pump, etc. The 1600cc to 1915cc kits feature a Shrink Fit
Prop Hub. The 2180cc and 2276cc kits feature the Force

This upgrade kit will change you horsepower from 60

CARR TWIN 1/2 VW PLANS:
The introduction of the “Carr Twin”, as a “sawed in half VW
engine”, was designed by Dave Carr and was featured in the January, 1975, issue of Sport Aviation magazine. The “Carr Twin” was
awarded the John Livingston Award for outstanding contribution
to low cost flying, as well as, the Stan Dzik Memorial Award for
outstanding design contribution.
The “Carr Twin” Plans are available from Great Plains Aircraft. The plans
include conversion plans for both the full case and cut case.

Our Forged 82mm E4340 “Top Bug” crankshaft is
machined in the USA. It is used with our Force One
Prop Hub Kit.
This crankshaft is made to our specifications, based
on our 31+ years of manufacturing parts for use on
VW engine conversions, as used in homebuilt aircraft. When used in our direct drive (on normally aspirated
engines) it has had a failure rate of “0”.

PROP HUBS
Great Plains Aircraft offers two Prop Hubs for use on the VW engine. Both of these prop hubs are made
from 4140 steel and have a beautiful black oxide finish. Both prop hubs feature a 5” diameter face with
6 each 5/16” holes for the prop on 4” centers. The prop pilot is 3/8” long and 2” in diameter. Each prop
hub kit includes a face plate, washer, bolt and cotter key if needed.
The Shrink Fit Prop Hub is the oldest prop hub
design currently made. This hub extends out 2.5” to
the face of the hub from the engine when installed on
the crankshaft. As its name implies, this is a shrink fit
hub. It has approximately a .002” interference fit on
the nose of the crankshaft. The hub is heated to about
400º F to install. The Shrink Fit Prop Hub features reverse
threads that sling oil back into the case. Torque to 50 ft.
lbs. using Blue Locktite after sizing the bolt.

The Force One kit provides over 4 times the radial load
bearing area than a standard VW bearing. In addition, because the prop hub rides in the bearing the
effective diameter of the crankshaft nose is increased

Your Type 1 engine case will need to be machined
to use the Force One kit. The Force One Prop Hub
extends out about 3.5” from the engine case.

Great Plains Solid Lifter Camshaft is available in 4 different
grinds for 1600cc, 1835cc, 1915cc and 2180cc engines. Each
cam has been tested to provide the best torque in the low rpm
band we operate at. The 2180cc & 2276cc camshafts are machined, so no additional clearancing is needed for
stroker engines.

“Camshafts” Bigger is not always better especially when
it comes to camshafts. Lift in excess of .370” will not
really gain much, as the stock VW head is not capable
of flowing more without work. Too much lift will actually detract from the performance of our relatively slow
turning VW Aero conversions. Anytime you replace
the camshaft in an engine, we strongly suggest you
replace the lifters also. Never use used or re-ground
lifters. Many re-ground lifters we have checked do not
have any offset left on the lifter face. This simply means
that the lifter will not rotate in the lifter bore or on the
camshaft and will cause premature failure of both case
and camshaft. All to save about $10.00!

Teflon Wrist Pin Buttons are for use, in our opinion, only with
custom pistons that do not have keeper grooves machined into
the piston. Our experience has shown that without the use of an
oil filter, the teflon wrist pins can do more damage
to the cylinder wall by grinding contaminates into
it than the likely hood of ever have a stock circlip
coming out and having the wrist pin damage the
cylinder wall. In our 33 years of flying VW’s we
have yet to see a missing circlip on tear down. If
you must have them however, we’ve got them.

Horsepower!
Do we ever hear and read about what we
believe are whoppers when it comes to horsepower that a VW
based conversion will produce for usable propeller horsepower.
Stop and look around for a moment at the props used on both
certified aircraft engines and homebuilts.
Let’s look at the standard 52” prop that is used on many VW
powered homebuilts. On a 1835cc 60 hp engine, we use a 52”
diameter by 42” pitch prop. This engine is rated at 60 known
horsepower. If you take the 60 hp and multiply it by the conversion factor of .7, you get 42” of pitch. With a 2180cc rated at 70
horsepower and multiply it by the conversion factor of .7, you
get 49” of pitch. It just so happens that these pitch numbers
are exactly what is being used today, or in other words - reality.
If you want good take off and climb performance, back off the
pitch by a few inches. You can still get the same airspeed by
running the engine up a few more rpm’s.

accessory attachment and engine vibration isolation for VW

The Diehl Accessory Case is very
distinctive from others that are

Our NEW Flywheel is made from
100% steel. Experience has
shown that many aluminum flywheels will fail around the dowel pin holes. In 30+ years, we have not had one known flywheel fatigue failure
from cracking. Our Direct Drive flywheels are machined, balanced, and weight about 6 pounds. They are the
lightest steel flywheels available today.
We were the first to initiate the use of a Geared Hi-Torque Starter for positive engine starting. Our competitors
of course followed. Our geared starter provides four times the cranking power when compared to the older
non geared starters. (Note: Starters are re-manufactured.)
The Diehl Accessory Case utilizes a 109 tooth ring gear. A VW Starter does not work with the Diehl Accessory Case.
We introduced the moulded ceramic based Magnet Ring for the 35 AMP 3 phase internal alternator. This state
of the art magnet ring eliminated the problem associated with steel caps coming loose off magnet rings.
You can order the entire unit as a complete package and save a few dollars or you can
order the items individually. The flywheel is available to fit either 4 or 8 dowel crankshafts. The Complete Diehl Accessory Case Package includes the following: 12, 6 or 9 o’clock starter mount Diehl

Great Plains Single Mag Adapter Kit
This kit installs on the
back of the engine
around the rear seal
area. The kit contains
the magneto housing,
flywheel end piece,
male mag drive piece,
female mag drive
puck and miscellaneous hardware. The
flywheel end piece is made from steel and has 3 different
positions available for the mag drive piece to attach to. It
is drilled for 1 crankshaft dowel pin and can be drilled for
4 or 8 if needed. The mag housing is drilled with 4 each
#21 holes that are used as drill guides to drill the holes in
the engine case. The engine case is then tapped with a
10/32 tap. Total distance back from the back of the engine
case, to the back of the mag harness cap is approximately
8.5”. Used in aircraft with no electrical system; engine is
started by propping. Fisher Youngster and Avenger are
good examples of use for this product. Housing is 5-1/8”

Oil Pump Secondary. This Great Plains Electronic
Oil Pump Secondary Ignition System uses the same
electronic components found in our Low Height
Secondary Ignition System. As the name says - “Oil
Pump Secondary”, it is driven off the lower gear of
the oil pump. The housing is machined from a billet
of aluminum and replaces the oil pump cover plate. The timing is set between 24 and 28 degrees BTDC. Do not have this ignition on when starting your
engine, only turn it on after the engine is running. It works for a secondary with any Front Drive engine, Reduction Drive engine, and is the secondary
ignition for the
Flywheel Drive
engine series.

TBO - Time Between Overhaul.
We get asked this question almost daily and sometimes the one asking the question still doesn’t like the
answer...
TBO is a term that applies to certified aircraft engines only. The FAA mandates that certified aircraft engines, when used commercially, must be overhauled at the end of a specific time or hour period. There is
nothing mandated by anyone to overhaul your VW conversion upon reaching any arbitrary date or hours.
So what is the TBO of a VW conversion? Well let me ask you, what is the TBO of you family car engine,
your boat motor, your lawn mower engine, chain saw, etc.? If your answer is - “there is none” - you are
right! Your VW aircraft conversion is just like any other engine you own. The life of it and overhaul frequency will be determined by:
1. What kind of engine it was to start with? Was it built with new or used parts?
2. How the engine is installed - cooled/baffeling? The VW likes to be cool...
3. How the engine is used - does it sit for months? The VW likes to be run!
4. Compression ratio - high or low? In general, the higher the compression ratio the lower the life.
5. Type of fuel used - automotive or 100LL? Automotive fuel is easier on the valve train.
6. How the engine is maintained?
Part of the benefit of owning a homebuilt is that you can do your own maintenance to reduce the amount
of cash it takes to operate an aircraft per hour. The VW is maintained just like your car or truck. It is maintenance as needed. But preventive maintenance is performed, i.e., check/adjust the valves every 25 hours,
changing the oil, etc. (Maintenance Schedule is found on Page 41 in this Catalog!)

SONERAI SPORT AIRCRAFT BY GREAT PLAINS AIRCRAFT
The Sonerai series of homebuilt aircraft were originally developed by designer John Monnett. The Sonerai’s have been on the
market since the early 70’s. The Sonerai I was first, followed by the very popular Sonerai II shortly after. The Sonerai II and various
versions of it are among the most popular homebuilt aircraft ever. After 35+ years, the Sonerai still offers the homebuilder a
value that is difficult to match.
For the homebuilder, this plans built Sonerai series of homebuilt aircraft represent an excellent return on money invested.
Fuselage construction is 4130 steel tubing with fabric covering and the wings are made out of 2024-T3 aluminum. You will
need simple metal working tools and access to a gas welder to complete the aircraft. One of the most attractive features of the
Sonerai is that the wings can easily be folded back. This important feature will allow you to keep the aircraft at home and tow
it to the airport on its own wheels. With hanger rent varying from $50 to $200 per month, this is indeed an important feature
that all the Sonerai’s share.
The Sonerai I enjoys an excellent reputation for strength,
speed, and agility, especially in the Formula VEE racing circuit.
The Sonerai I can handle + or - 6 G’s with the “S” wing. It can
accommodate a 6 foot, 200 pound pilot. The Sonerai I will do
170 m.p.h. flat out, full throttle on a Great Plains 2180cc engine.
The Sonerai II (Original) is perhaps the most versatile VW powered
homebuilt ever conceived. It is a 2 place (tandem) aircraft that
is available as a mid-wing taildragger, a low-wing taildragger,
and a low-wing tri-gear.

The Sonerai II Stretch, which is 18” longer, is a 2 place (tandem) aircraft that

the 6 foot + pilots. The Stretch Sonerai’s require a 2180cc - 2300cc Type 1
VW Engine conversions only.
Both the Sonerai II and II-Stretch can carry a pilot and passenger, plus 10
gallons of fuel. Cruise speed of the Sonerai II with a Great Plains 2180cc
engine is 140+ m.p.h. at full gross. The Sonerai II is rated at ±4.4 G’s at full
gross or ±6 G’s solo (750 lbs. max.). The range of the Sonerai II and II-S is
245 miles (with a reserve of 45 minutes) without the auxiliary tank.
The Sonerai II Stretch - Two Place.
Available as low wing. Tri gear or taildragger.
The Sonerai airframe can be built for about $8,000. Miscellaneous hardware,
canopy, paint, engine, instruments and fabric is also required. Average cost to build is $18,000 depending upon engine and

EASY EAGLE I BI-PLANE
The Easy Eagle I Bi -Plane is a good old fashioned airplane that
is affordable, easy to build and combines standard aircraft
construction methods - built with a steel tube fuselage, wood
wings that are covered in fabric. The Easy Eagle I Bi -Plane
will accept Front Drive engine displacements from 1915cc
through 2180cc. The cockpit is 24” wide. The fiberglass cowling removes easily to allow complete access to the engine,
magneto, and instruments. The landing gear is manufactured
from 5/8” x 6” 2024T-351 aluminum. The Easy Eagle I Bi -Plane
features an 11 gallon tank. The Easy Eagle I Bi -Plane is off and
flying in only 300’ and lands in about the same, thanks to a
generous 105 sq. ft. of wing area.

pucks that press against both sides of the disc. They
are built to be used with Azusa 5” wheels or can be
