This report helps celebrate 15 years of teaching children with hearing loss how to listen
and talk. While we look a bit different than we did in 1999 – our students are younger,
our programming has expanded – we’ve also stayed true to our mission. We know that
when children have access to high quality instruction in high doses and at an early age,
they can acquire the listening and language skills necessary to succeed independently.
As we completed our 15th year, our older alumni were completing high school and
entering college. Our alumni often return to volunteer at Northern Voices – and that
speaks volumes. They gave their time during summer school, planted our first school
garden, “Walked for Talk,” and most importantly, served as confident and exceptional
role models for our young students. Our graduates prove that the possibilities are
endless and we are thrilled to welcome our alumni “home” any time they would like
to visit.
It’s a pleasure to say that we’ve served children and families for 15 years. In the pages
ahead we’ll tell you how our mentoring program sparked new connections between
families; how our center-based programs offer the highest quality instruction; how we
use tele-instruction to remove barriers to education; and of course, how we celebrate 15
years of “hearing the possibilities.”

Never Too Early to Start
PARENT-INFANT PROGRAM
Northern Voices works to empower parents to communicate with their young
children with hearing loss through listening and spoken language. This means
helping parents understand more about hearing loss, their communication options,
and how hearing loss impacts communication development. When parents learn
how to teach their child to talk, it strengthens the parent-child bond and promotes
future language development.
It is never too early to begin working on listening and spoken language with a child
who has hearing loss. From birth to 18 months old, our parents and infants are
establishing a solid foundation for the future.
Early Intervention
TODDLER PROGRAM
Children transition into the Toddler Program when they are ready to begin
social interactions in small group settings, usually between 18 months and two
years old. Available in the mornings, each child attends as appropriate for him
or her – younger children may come only two days a week while older children
may come all five days. Teachers continue to help parents learn strategies and
techniques for communicating with their child and encouraging development.
The Toddler Program features large group activities, small group teaching,
and one-on-one sessions with teachers uniquely trained in teaching oral deaf
education. Individual sessions focus on vocabulary, speech and language skills,
and listening skills, while group activities allow for learning and observation of
other typical child development skills, such as social skills, cognitive skills, and
fine and gross motor skills, in a linguistically rich, supportive environment.
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
We had a great response to our new mentoring program! Fourteen pairs of alumni and
current students are now bound for fun times and new friendships. Northern Voices hosted
four seasonal activities (pizza night, picnic in the park, homecoming and a theater show),
and youth were encouraged to get together on their own as well. We heard some of the
pairs took in baseball games, attended recitals and had several play dates!

Ready to Succeed
PRESCHOOL PROGRAM
Northern Voices offers a full-day school program to help children ages three
and up enter school ready to succeed. Daily, individualized instruction is key to the
success of our program. The school day includes several periods of highly focused
spoken language instruction in small groups of two to four. Groups this size provide
ample opportunity for talking, and also ensure that the teacher targets instruction to
the appropriate level to provide the greatest challenge and success. These small group
sessions are balanced with the large classroom time – where students participate in
experiential learning activities that build kindergarten readiness skills. Our highly
trained, caring faculty include teachers of the deaf/hard-of-hearing and specialists in
early childhood education. This breadth of expertise ensures that our students benefit
from a well-rounded, age-appropriate learning environment while remaining intent on
developing the skills of listening and speaking.

Tele-intervention expands access to quality listening and spoken language
services for children with hearing loss. Through weekly or bi-weekly one-hour
online sessions, Northern Voices provides coaching strategies to empower
parents or caregivers to be their child’s first and best teacher. Using everyday
items in the home, parents are able to incorporate listening,
language and speech goals into daily routines.
For families who are not able to attend Northern Voices,
teletherapy offers education, tips and strategies from highly
trained and trusted professionals in oral deaf education, right
