PIKEVILLE - Cheerleaders in Ky. Region

Schools listed in Region 15 are Allen
Central, Belfry, Betsy Layne, East Ridge,

Paintsville, Piarist, Pike County Central,
Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Shelby Valley,

The Kentucky High School Athletic
Association (KHSAA) sponsors the
competitive cheer championships for a
routine lasting two and a half minutes.
All contests shall be played using the
NFHS Spirit Rules as published by the NFHS
in Indianapolis. Additional rules, governed
by the State Association adoption provisions
in the National Federation Playing Rules or
otherwise developed by the Association may
be implanted in contests played in Ky.
A school may enter no more than two
squads depending upon school size.
The two and a half minute routine must

include all elements of cheerleading skills
listed on the judge’s score sheet.
Competition provisions state that,
“teams shall take the floor only once and
perform their entire routine. No routine may
exceed two and a half minutes. Timing is
determined using full seconds. The person
announcing the competition shall announce
the team to take the floor and the team will
begin when ready. Following this statement,
the time of the routine shall commence on
the first perceived activity on the part of any
team member or the beginning of the music
or audio. The timing of the routine shall stop
with the end of the audio of the last word
or perceived motion.”
Technical judging penalties may occur.
A team can be disqualified for , “Height
limitation on stunts and pyramids for
than two levels high; mini- trampoline or
other height increasing apparatus, more
cheerleaders than allowed per category or
in an inappropriate category as defined by
competition rules such as a boy in an allgirl division.”
All-girl teams shall be scored on stunting,
pyramids or tosses, running and standing
tumbling, jumps and dance based on
difficulty and execution.
Ten points will also be scored for
choreography based on creativity,
formations, transitions, spacing, use of
motionos to lead crowd and incorporation
of signs, poms, banners and megaphones.
For the all-girl division, ten points
will also be scored for performance.
Performance is judged on energy level,
voice, crowd appeal, and school appropriate
material, and effort to lead crowd.
Co-ed teams will be scored on co-ed
stunting, co-ed pyramid and tosses, running
and standing tumbling and jumps based on
difficulty and execution.
Ten points will be scored for
choreography based on creativity,
formations, transitions, spacing, use of
motionos to lead crowd and incorporation
of signs, poms, banners, and megaphones.
The co-ed division will also be scored for
performance based on energy level, voice,
crowd appeal, school appropriate material
and effort to lead crowd.
Ten points in penalties can occur for
violations related to exceeding time limits
in routine or music length.

Pictured above are the 2015 Belfry High School Varsity Cheerleaders cheering on the home team during

Okay! Let’s go! If you don’t know already
the High School Regional Cheerleading
Competition is approaching fast. Teams
have been working hard since August 3rd
to prepare for upcoming tournaments.
Regional tournaments begin on Nov. 7. and
state tournaments begin on Dec. 11.
The world of competitive cheerleading
has grown in popularity in the last
decade, gone are the days of pep-rally’s
and simple routines. Today’s routines are
as complicated and complex as the plays
of any other sport. Being a cheerleader
today requires an abundance of skill and
intelligence.
In order to meet all the basic requirements
of the regional competition teams must
follow a litany of safety guidelines, rules
and regulations. Three separate manuals
are referenced for such requirements,
the Interscholastic Manual, the National
Federation Handbook and the WVSSAC
Cheer Manual.
Area teams were required to submit the
official Regional Outline and Entry Form by
Oct. 7. in order to be eligible for the regional
tournament. After all the requirements are
met the fun will begin and teams will be able
to showcase their hard work.
During the tournament, teams will follow
the 2015-2016 High School Format which
includes one 30 to 40 second technical
routine and one 2:30 open routine.
The WVSSAC cheer manual states that,
“the 30-40 second technical segment with
motions and at least two different jumps
will constitute as thirty percent of the total
score and will be scored at completion of the
technical portion.”

The actual routines will be judged by
the official cheer judging panel who are
qualified through the state. The scoring
is broken up into five different sections
that will come together to provide a
team’s over-all score.
For the Technical Cheer, teams will
be judged on cheer fundamentals,
motion technique, precision of
motions, formations,spacing.use of
floor, voice, jumps,choreography and
creativity. Each scoring platform will be
worth five points each and a final score
will be provided from the cumulative
score of each platform. A high score
of 30 points on the technical cheer is
achievable.
The judges will be looking for
things like sharpness, straight limbs,
bent wrists, variety, timing, rythym,
formations, spacing, sloppy transitions,
synchronizations, and landings. Any of
these can cause a team’s over-all score
to raise or drop.
The open cheer will be judged on
variety/rhythm, music interpretation,
execution, tumbling, partner stunts
and pyramids. The judges will be
awarding higher scores for routines
that are flashy and exciting, have
good incorporation, good difficulty,
moves match the music, a good variety,
strong tumbling, good stunts and clean
dismounts. All of these formats will be
worth five points and combine for a 25
point total.
Lower scores will be awarded to
teams who are not together, whose
formations need variety, a teams
level of difficulty, a team’s timing and
rhythm being off, the need for overall variety, tumbling needs perfected,
stunts not being ready, a lack of step/
lock/tighten, bad dismounts/cradles/
Timing.
Teams will be judged on their
overall appeal with choreography
and creativity being worth 10 points,
and level of difficulty being worth 15
points for a total of 25 points. Judges
will award points if a team has good
flow, good variety, a creative routine
and good difficulty. The judges will
take points away if a team’s overall
appeal is choppy and doesn’t flow,
their transitions are sloppy, a routine is
monotonous, and the routines level of
difficulty being to low.
Teams will also be judged on
Teams will follow the guidelines set
forth for the technical segment:
No gymnastics or tumbling.
No pyramids, partner stunts,
or props.
No touching or bracing.
No poms or music
A minimum of thirty seconds/
maximum of forty seconds.
For the two minute and thirty second
open routine teams must follow these
guidelines:
No voice-overs on cheers.
Poms are only props allowed
Music is used at the discretion of the
team.
If music is used, a quality CD (with
back-up) must be available and edited
for the whole 3 minutes. Only one
start and stop is permitted. IPods are
permitted. Coach must check with
tournament director and provide a
¼” Mono Connector.
The order of performance for
Regional and State Competition is
listed online and was drawn by the
Cheer Coaches Committee.
projection. Judges will be looking for an
excellent spirit, a team being showy and
spirited, strong voices, sportsmanship
and good expressions. Judges do not
want to see a team that cannot keep their
spirit throughout their whole routine,
teams that need to be louder and don’t
fade out, enunciation, and a team that
needs to smile more. The projection
section is worth 10 total points.
A team will be given 10 points for
their overall effect on the judges. The
judges will tally up the team’s scores and
present them with their overall score. A
perfect score would be 100 total points.
The 2015-2016 points of emphasis
state that, “a team must avoid uniforms
that expose the mid-driffs and torso’s.
Basket Tosses are illegal on any surface
or floor, Double Downs are illegal. A
single twist to a cradle is permitted,
airborne twisting and tumbling skills
are not permitted with the exception
of round offs and aerial cartwheels.
Repetitive pelvic thrusts during cheer
performances and competitions are
not permitted. Attire is also strictly
enforced.”
This year, Mingo Central will be
traveling to Cabell Midland High School
for the Region five tournament to be held
on Nov. 7. At 2:00 p.m. Tug Valley will be
heading to the Charleston Civic Center
on Nov. 7. At 10:00 a.m.

Logan’s Cheeriffic All-Stars
in national spotlight
Mullens Middle School Cheerleaders
By Paul Adkins
padkins@civitasmedia.com
In just a decade, Cheeriffic
has gone from humble
beginnings to a regional and
national brand.
The Logan-based
Cheeriffic All-Star
cheerleaders has brought
home six national
championships — all coming
in the last four years — and
has taken the country by
storm.
Last year, the tradition
continued at Cheeriffic
as the organization won
another overall national
championship as the Tiny 1
squad grabbed the national
crown in its division back in
May.

The Cheeriffic Tiny 1
team was first in the nation
out of 30 total teams in
its division in the final
rankings and dominated the
competition all year long.
The squad beat teams
from Arkansas, New
Jersey, Illinois, Indiana,
Louisiana, Iowa, Alabama,
West Virginia, Wisconsin,
Kentucky, Ohio, North
Carolina, Missouri, Virginia,
Massachusetts, Kansas,
Delaware, Pennsylvania and
Colorado to take the crown.
The eight-girl Tiny
team, Cheeriffic’s youngest
squad, took part in five
competitions during the
2014-15 season and took five
first-places.

championship in 2013 in
Orlando, Fla., in the UCA
International Championships
at Disney World.
The pink and black-clad
Cheeriffic All-Stars are
coached by Heather Bryant
and Brittney Hartman — both
former cheerleaders at Logan
High School.
Bryant said it’s been quite a
journey.
“I embarked on this journey
10 years ago and I never
dreamed it would become
what it is today,” Bryant said.
“We have been so blessed over
the years. This little program
from Logan, West Virginia has
achieved championship after
championship throughout the
years. I’m just amazed with
every year. It takes a lot of
hard work, sacrifices, blood,
sweat and tears but boy oh boy
has it paid off. Our program
has received the overall US
Finals Championships for four
straight years. These teams
were awarded championship
rings, jackets and pants.”
Hartman said the girls of
Cheeriffic have worked very
hard over the years.
“I have been blessed to be
apart of this wonderful cheer
program. Over the years that
I have helped coach, there
has been so much dedication
from each and every athlete,
every coach, and of course
from every single family
that has been in our cheer
program,” Hartman said.
“The teams over the past
10 years have won so many
prestigious awards, bids, and
titles and also have competed
at some of the most talented
competitions throughout the
country. Our teams have been
blessed with four overall US
Final Championships in a
row.”
Cheeriffic’s other three
teams also closed out
successful 2014-15 seasons,
taking it to the next level.
The Mini 2 team from
Cheeriffic finished as national
runners-up in a 19-team field.
The Mini team also won
first place last May at the US

Finals and took five first-place
finishes during the season.
The Cheeriffic Junior 2
team, also winners at the US
Finals at Virginia Beach in a
22-team division, closed out
the season ranked seventh in
the country out of 158 total
squads.
Among those Junior 2
teams classified as “Small
Gym,” the Cheeriffic All-Stars
were rated second in the
nation.
Hartman said Cheeriffic
had an outstanding season.
“To say our little gym in
Logan went to the largest U.S.
Finals and came home with
three first-place finishes is a
dream come true. The girls
had the best performances of
the season. And I couldn’t be
more proud,” Hartman said.
“And to top the season off, our
Tiny team was crowned first
in the nation. This is a great
accomplishment. They work
hard and are simply amazing.”
Bryant said it was a major
accomplishment to bring
home a sixth overall national
championship.
“Our program is blessed,”
she said. “It’s a huge
accomplishment getting a
first-in-the-nation ranking
and this year makes our sixth
overall national title in four
years. Tinys and Minis had
a undefeated season. These
amazing athletes have made
Cheeriffic so proud. They
have hearts of a champion
and show it in every aspect of
their lives. Each of these girls
are a blessing to me and I am
honored to be their coach.”
Back on May 2-3, the
Cheeriffic Junior 2 team
competed in The Summit, a
defacto national championship
youth all-star cheerleading
competition, at the ESPN
Wide World of Sports
Complex in Orlando.
In Florida, Cheeriffic
took 22nd place in their
insanely tough 34-team
field, beating out two squads
from Pittsburgh and an
international team from
Tokyo, Japan. Cheeriffic
competed against the Pacific
Coast All-Stars — a Los
Angeles area team which
boasts a gym with more than
1,000 total cheerleaders to
pick from.
“Dreams really do come
true,” Bryant said when asked
about The Summit. “To earn
a bid to the Summit is a huge
accomplishment. We were
against the cream of the crop.
Every team there is a firstplace team. It was the most
elaborate competition we have
ever attended. Our Junior
team hit a perfect routine.”
Hartman said it was just
an honor to compete in The
Summit, which brought in
some of the elite youth all-star
cheer groups from throughout
the nation and from foreign
countries.
“We were honored to be
invited to attend The Summit
this season,” Hartman said.
“Their catch phrase is ‘Where
bids are earned NOT given.”
And it truly is. Our J2 team
competed alongside the most
elite and prestigious gyms in
the country. They performed
great and put Cheeriffic’s
name out there for everyone
to know.”
The Cheeriffic Junior 3
team, the most advanced
squad in the Cheeriffic AllStar troop, closed out last
season ranked 27th in the
nation out of 102 teams. The
team earned a second-place
finish at the US Finals.
Cheeriffic’s national title
this year was the fourth
straight year a team had been
crowned as overall national
champions.
In 2012, the Cheeriffic Tiny
and Mini teams won national
titles. In 2013, the Mini and
Youth teams from Cheeriffic
took national crowns. In 2014,
the Youth Level team brought
home a national title.
Cheeriffic was also
recognized and honored three
times during the 2014-15
season.
Back in February, West
Virginia Gov. Earl Ray
Tomblin and the West
Virginia State Legislature
honored the cheerleaders at
the State Capitol Building in
Charleston.
Cheeriffic was also honored
by the City of Logan and its
“Cheeriffic Day” throughout
the city on January 22, and
later by the Logan County
Commission.
Hartman said the 2014-15
season was a huge challenge
for the cheerleaders and the
entire organization.
“Throughout this entire
season, our girls have seen
themselves as champions and
that showed every time they
hit that competition mat,”
she said. “These have been
the hardest routines we have
ever done and our athletes
made them look so easy.
We have had great success
and accomplished so many
achievements. All teams
combined we have achieved
three second places, a fourth
place and 16 first places,
plus numerous level champs,
grand champs, paid bids, a
Summit bid and tumbling/
stunt specialty awards. We
are blessed and we are a truly
blessed program.”
The Cheeriffic organization,
however, is not resting.
The 2015-16 season is
just around the corner and
Cheeriffic is scheduled to take
part in its first competition
in late November in Raleigh,
N.C.
Cheeriffic is expected to
field four teams this season.
The team practices at the
old Stollings Grade School
gym on the new spring board
mat which was installed in
August 2014 by parents,
friends and volunteers.
Bryant said her mother
Teresa has also been a big
help to Cheeriffic over the
years.
“My mother has been the
backbone of the Cheeriffic
program,” Heather Bryant
said. “She is always
instilling that ‘I can do all
things through Christ who
strengthens me.’ Without
her always teaching us about
the Lord, we wouldn’t have
the strength and courage to
achieve greatness. I’m looking
forward to this upcoming
season and seeing these girls
achieve championships.”
Hartman said she’s looking
forward to this season.
“Something our teams are
always able to accomplish is
that ‘Coming together is a
beginning, Keeping together
is progress. Working together
is success,’” she said. “I look
forward to seeing what this
season holds for the teams.
And I cannot wait to see what
championships these all star
athletes bring home.”
