When his government lost the election in that year, he was made a Judge of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court. He converted to Roman Catholicism after marrying his wife Annie in 1870. Sir John A. Macdonald persuaded him to enter the federal Conservative cabinet as Minister of Justice in 1885 and Thompson quickly became Macdonald's right hand man. Although he was the logical successor when the Old Chief died in 1891, Thompson yielded to Senator J.J.C. Abbott. The next year he did take over as Prime Minister on November 24, 1892. Although Canada was wracked by the Manitoba Schools Question, the gracious Thompson kept his government under control and continued to win by-elections. On Dec. 12, 1894 while waiting to greet Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle, he died of a heart attack. With the death of Thompson the Liberals under Laurier defeated the Conservatives in 1896.
