I
t is my distinct honour to salute and applaud
the performances and varied contributions of our
athletes, sporting bodies and administrators to
the development of sports and indeed Barbados
during 2014.
In particular, my congratulations are extended to
all award winners in this year’s National Sports
Awards.
Very apparent from a review of performances during 2014, especially
among some of our athletes representing Barbados at regional and international levels, is the emergence of individuals and in some instances
teams exhibiting the potential, determination and commitment to excel
and attain standards in keeping with global sporting excellence and professionalism. This, we are well aware, required significant sacrifice, a high
level of commitment to preparation and dedication often against some
odds.
In encouraging the continued pursuit of excellence and unswerving loyalty to personal achievement, I also encourge you to continue to challenge yourselves to compete to win each time, to break and surpass the
record each time, to secure a place of dignity that defines you as a sporting personality of global significance with the capacity to set ablaze a trail
of success and lasting legacy.
As a nation we are very excited about the developmental prospects of
sports. In fact, the theme for this year’s Awards Ceremony, “Building
Strategic Bridges” sets in focus the vision for propelling sports beyond
a pastime to that of a “New Economic Frontier” in Barbados, facilitating
thereby the emergence of a professional class of sports persons, administrators and business support organizations. That this is important to the
shaping of our nation and the strengthening of a consciousness and commitment to an economic future that encompasses sport as a strategic

component of socio-economic importance, cannot be over emphasized.
The Government of Barbados and indeed the Ministry of Culture, Sports
and Youth remain committed to your development and that of the sporting industry as a necessary ingredient to our productive future. Stay focus, stay strong, compete to win. God bless you.
32nd Annual National Sports Council Award Ceremony

T
he year 2014, would be classified as one where
Barbados achieved major and historic successes in
sports, and as such, should point the way forward
for our future development.
While the success of all are greatly significant,
three (3) instances of success under very tough circumstances stood out: the historic feat of three (3)
Barbadian athletes making the 110 metre hurdles finals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and then further going on to capture
the Bronze medal, is indicative of our class in this discipline; young athlete, Akela Jones winning a historic gold medal in the long jump at the
IAAF World Junior event in Eugene, Oregon and three (3) Barbadian jockeys (Rico Walcott - Northlands, Chistopher Husbands - Assiniboia Downs
and Patrick Husbands - Woodbine) winning horse racing titles in Canada.
The latter Husbands, ace rider Patrick, winning the Woodbine title after
a serious, career threatening injury in 2013 and a three (3) year hiatus
of not winning the champion jockey title, underscored his determination
and class.
What these successes and others have suggested, is that with the necessary hard work, determination and perseverance, Barbados’ name could
be repeatedly placed on the medal podium in future years. The career
of our Lifetime Awardee, Rev. Dr. Sir Wesley Hall is further proof of the
heights that can be reached from humble beginnings, and should help to
further inspire our young sportspersons to greater achievements.
I take this opportunity to extend heartfelt congratulations to all Awardees
who performed with distinction, and further encourage you to continue
to reach for the stars. I also express sincere thanks and gratitude to sponsors, facilitators, volunteers and stakeholders who have partnered with
the Council in ensuring that its sports development goals are achieved.
Let’s all continue to build the appropriate bridges as we strive for further
successes.
Community Awards
Joshua Carter
Joshua Carter’s foray into community work started in the late ‘60s with his early beginnings as a
sportsman at the St. Leonard’s Boys’ School, mainly in the disciplines of cricket and football.
He moved on to play football as a goalkeeper and
defender for his home district of Ellerton, St. George. A strict disciplinarian, Joshua took up football refereeing in 1978 and was so committed
to that role that he became a FIFA referee in 1989, and had the honour
of participating in the first Caribbean Cup (Shell Caribbean Cup) football
tournament played in Barbados that year. A long-standing member of the
Barbados Football Association (BFA), Joshua also served on their Referees’ Council for four (4) years (1990 – 1994). He completed his refereeing
stint in 2007, along the way he trained many young people in the art of
refereeing, and was awarded the Outstanding Referee Award by the BFA
in 2008.
During his career of over 40 years in sport and community work, Joshua
Carter has been the manager/coach of the Malvern Football team and
Manager of the Malvern Cricket team. In the early ‘80s he also helped to
organize the Under 12, Under 15 and Under 17 Youth tournaments for
the BFA at the Banks, Barclays and Garrison grounds.
His organizational acumen was also extended to cricket, where he was
instrumental in organizing teams from St. George, including George Park,
Greens, Hamilton, Brighton, Middlesex and Ellerton, to play tournaments
among themselves, which eventually led to the best of those teams playing for Malvern at their Ellerton home ground. Such is Joshua’s commitment to Malvern, that he can still be seen in charge of the bar at the Club
on match days. Additionally he has been a Sports’ Representative for the
area of St. George South.
Sylvia Darlington
Sylvia Darlington first became involved in the sport
of football in 1991 as a supporter of the Ruby Rebels football team that won many championships in
the St. Philip area. In 1992, she became the manager of that team and changed their name to Ruby
Ballers FC. She served as Manager until 1999.
In 1993, she was appointed Vice President and holds that position to this
day.
She has worked in the St. Philip North community with the clubs in the
area, assisting in organising events such as Socceramas, Old Year’s Night
& Errol Barrow Day functions at Three Houses Park, sponsored fun walks
and picnics.
During her time of working in the St. Philip North community, Sylvia has
worked towards enhancing the lives of several young people from the
area and has served on several community committees, including being
Chairperson of the Sports Committee and the Football Representative for
St. Philip North Community. She was also responsible for organizing the
football team to represent St. Philip North in the inaugural David Thompson Memorial Football Classic.
Mrs. Darlington served on the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Executive Council during the period 1998 to 2014, holding the positions of
representative for the St. Philip League, Assistant Treasurer and Junior
Assistant Secretary.
Additionally, she was elected Chairperson of the BFA’s Women’s Committee in 2003, was a member of the Caribbean Football Union’s (CFU) Women’s Interim Committee and also sat on regional women’s committees including CONCACAF. Sylvia’s duties to the Women and Sport Committee
at the BFA have, despite the resources allocated, resulted in success for
women’s football at the administrative, official, athlete and coach levels.
Under Mrs. Darlington’s tenure, Women’s football has grown by leaps
and bounds, including the establishment of the BFA’s Women’s League
and the spread of Women’s football programmes at the grassroots level.
Sylvia Darlington continues to assist in the development of managers,
medics and coaches. In addition, she has conducted Team Building Workshops for the youth and has visited several secondary schools to promote
the women’s game.
Mrs. Darlington goes above and beyond the call of duty/volunteerism
without asking for anything in return. A totally dedicated community
worker.
David Oxley
David Oxley is a beacon in community works in the
My Lord’s Hill, St. Michael area. Organizing community activities for over 20 years, he has singlehandedly transformed recreational sport in the
area. Using his own resources, David has placed
exercise equipment around the Blenheim playing
field for free use by all from the community. To buttress this endeavour,
he has scheduled weekly fitness classes for both adults and children from
the area. His efforts have resulted in increased participation over the last
3 years.
To add to his community work, David also buys second hand bicycles for
children in the community who are less fortunate, thus giving them the
opportunity to enjoy riding throughout the community as well as participating in the Barbados Cycling Union’s cycling events.
David Oxley is a former footballer for the National Sports Council (NSC)
and Benfica in the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Division 1 competition. However, his biggest accomplishment has been as principal organizer of the increasingly popular My Lord’s Hill 5 km Road Race along with
a 3 km Children’s Race, a concept that has gone from a mere dream to a
major reality in six (6) years. This event has grown by leaps and bounds
in terms of sponsorship and participation and is a targeted event for the
community and road race athletes alike.
Groundsman Of The Year
Award
Hallman Selman
An employee of the National Sports Council for
the past twenty two (22) years, Hallman Selman
has excelled as a groundsman at the James Bryan
ground in Market Hill, St. George.
A product of the St. Augustine Boys and the St. George Secondary Schools,
Hallman first started volunteering his skills as a groundsman when his
club, Market Hill, needed help in preparing the pitch and grounds on
their entry to the Barbados Cricket Association Division 2 Competition in
1992.
In his early years, Hallman was a former Under 15 and Under 18 cricketer
for the Barbados Youth Council (BYC) and the Barbados Cricket League’s
(BCL) Persuaders Club. He still plays competitively in the BCA Division 2
competition for Market Hill.
A hard worker who takes pride in the preparation of grounds, the highlight
of Hallman’s endeavours has been preparing pitches for various games
in the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) competitions, matches in the
Garfield Sobers International Cricket Competition and for cricket touring
teams from the United Kingdom. In fact, he has won great praise from
these touring teams, especially in 2014. All this from the Locust Hill, St.
George man who enjoys his job and strives for excellence at every turn.
School’s Award (Primary)
West Terrace
Primary School
Affectionately known as the West Terrace ‘Tigers’, the sporting teams of this school lived up
to their billing as a primary school athletic power
house by winning the Boys’ section of the National Primary School Athletic Championships (NAPSAC) in a close contest. Their standout performer
was however from the Girls’ section with little dynamo Skye SpencerLayne capturing the Victrix Ludorum title in the Under 9 Division.
To crown an excellent year, the ‘Tigers’ played unbeaten in the Guardian Group-Herman Griffith Cricket competition, easily whipping seasoned
powerhouses Charles F. Broome in the final. The Player of the Match was
the highly touted 11-year-old Class 4 student, Raheem Archer, who had
the distinction of scoring the first hundred in a final of the 32-year-old
history of the competition.
The school ran to victory in the NSC Trevor Straughn Memorial Cross
Country event, with Dominic Cadogan and Kemar John placing 1st and
2nd among the over 200 competitors in the Boys 7-12 division.
School’s Award (Secondary)
Queen’s College
Queen’s College was established in 1838, and has
a long tradition of excellence and achievement in
academic and extra curricula activities. The young
men and women of that honoured institution ensured that this tradition would continue in 2014.
The school teams were champions in five (5)
sporting disciplines, namely: Boys’ Champions in the Barbados Secondary
School Athletic Championships (BSSAC) ; Senior Girls’ Champions in Bas
ketball; Under 15 Champions in Netball; Under 15 and Under 18 (Boys) in
Table Tennis and, Under 16 League (Girls), Under 19 League (Girls), Under
19 Knockout (Girls) and Under 19 Knockout (Boys) in Volleyball. Additionally, they placed a creditable second (2nd) place for both boys and girls in
Secondary School Swimming.
Many Queen’s College students also played notable roles in national
teams in some of the less visible sports and did extremely well in the local
arena: Xavier Lawrence was the National Lawn Tennis Champion in two
age groups; Tiffani Lynch produced outstanding results in Dance; Heather
Walker excelled in Equestrian; Stephen Payne and Marcus Smith represented Barbados at the World Cadet Table Tennis Championships; Lydia
Nurse in Chess; Makaari Jones (Basketball) was selected to represent Barbados in Turkey at an International Expo and cricketers Nicholas Kirton,
Yvan Grant and Dikembe Wilson all made the Barbados Under-17 team
and played key roles in winning the Championship.
Youth Awards
Raheem Archer
This versatile 11 year old sportsman hailing from
Mount Brevitor, St. Peter, created history in the
2014 Guardian Group Herman Griffith Primary
School cricket tournament by becoming the first
person to score a century in the Finals, a superlative 114 not-out to lead his school West Terrace
Primary to the title against the Charles F. Broome
Primary.
By no chance was it a one-off innings as Raheem had scored 96 in the
preliminary games, on the way to accumulating well over 200 runs for
the tournament. In addition to his achievements in the Herman Griffith
competition, Raheem won the Under-13 Boys’ title at his school’s interhouse sports 2014 and also the Open Boys’ 800 metre run at the National
Primary School Athletic Championships (NAPSAC) 2014.
Meagan Best
Meagan Best is both an accomplished, well-rounded athlete and a gifted, disciplined student. A product of the St. Angela’s and the St. Michael’s schools,
Meagan first adopted the sport of Badminton and
represented her secondary school at the National
Sports Council’s Secondary School Badminton Doubles tournament, where she and her partner placed second.
Squash proved to be Meagan’s primary love, however, and this is where
she excelled throughout her 8-year career. In 2014, at 12 years of age,
Meagan was selected on the Senior Barbados Squash team to represent
Barbados at the Senior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships after winning the Under-13 Girls’ divisions and placing second
(2nd) in the Under-15 Girls’ division at the Barbados Junior National
Championships. In doing so, Meagan created history as the youngest
person ever to play and win matches at the Senior CASA Championships.
She competed as an unseeded player, and won the Consolation Plate to
finish fifth (5th). Meagan played the Canadian Champion the following
week at the USA Junior Open tournament as the two met in the 3/4 position playoff, which Meagan won in three straight games to create history
as the only Barbadian and Caribbean girl to ever have a podium finish at
this tournament.
This third place finish by Meagan Best is one of the best finishes by any
Barbadian junior at a major international squash competition, and is the
best showing by any Barbadian at the USA Junior Open since Gavin Cumberbatch placed second in the Boys’Under-16 age group in 1998. Former
Egyptian National Head Coach, Amir Wagih has reported the following: “I
have trained over 30 World Champions … Meagan can definitely be one.”
Strong commendation for this rising squash star.

Khamal Cumberbatch
Khamal Cumberbatch is still 12 years old but has
already won eight (8) National Junior squash titles
(three at U-11, three at U-13 and two at U-15) including both the Boys’ Under (BU)-13 and BU-15
titles at the Sagicor General Junior National Championships held in April 2014. Khamal’s commitment
to the sport is such that he is determined to break
eldest brother Gavin’s long-standing record of 11 national junior titles
and at his current rate should do so in about two years’ time. Arguably
the most talented of the four squash playing Cumberbatch siblings, Khamal has dominated the BU-13 age group in the Junior Caribbean Squash
Championships for the past two years, winning back-to-back Caribbean
BU-13 titles in July 2013 and July 2014, without dropping a single game
throughout. He also won the U-17 age group and placed third in the U-19
age group at the Massy United Insurance Barbados Junior Open, held in
December 2014.
Khamal’s progress in squash this year has been remarkable and he is already beating senior players. He is therefore one to watch for the future.
He participated in both the USA and Canadian Junior Squash Opens finishing 4th in the Canadian and 17th in the USA, an outstanding performance. This hard working student at the St. Michael’s Secondary School
also takes part in Athletics and Football. Khamal was unmatched as he
estblished yet again new national marks in these events while securing 12
podium appearances (9 gold and 3 silver medals).
Jaliyah Denny
12-year-old Jaliyah Denny is a fast rising star on the
athletic track. At the Barbados Secondary School
Athletic Championships (BSSAC) she competed
in the 100 metres & 200 metres, the 4x100 metre relay and the long jump with much success. In
the 100 meters, she ran a blistering 12.7 seconds
breaking the record that was held for nine years
and also breaking the record that stood at her school for twenty-one (21)
years. In the 200 metres, she placed second in a time of 26.58 secs and

was part of the winning 4x100 metre relay team for the Christ Church
Foundation School. She also placed first in the long jump.
At the 2014 Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) games held in Trinidad
and Tobago (T&T), Jaliyah did extremely well, placing second (2nd) in the
100m and 200m races, fourth (4th) in the high jump and was part of the
relay team which placed second (2nd). Jaliyah does very well academically, winning Speech Day prizes for her second form work.
Malachi Harris
Ten year old, Class 4 student of the Deacons Primary School, Malachi Harris has been outstanding in
Track and Field during the year 2014. A dominant
athlete in the Under 11 Division, he has been unbeaten in every event which he has competed. His
most impressive record has been a throw of 67.40
metres in the Cricket Ball event. The tall junior was
the Victor Ludorum for his Primary school and the Divisional champion at
the 2014 NAPSAC meet.
He continued this impressive form at the Caribbean Union of Teachers’
(CUT) Games in Trinidad (June 2014) where he placed first (1st) in the
Cricket Ball Throw and 300 metres, second (2nd) in the 200 metres and
third (3rd) in the 100 metres.
Danielle Titus
The year 2014 has been another great year for rising 12 year old swim prodigy, Danielle Titus. After
registering Age Group and Junior High Point Championships at the Barbados Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) Short and Long Course Nationals,
Danielle copped a combined seven (7) gold medals
at the Carifta Swim Championships in Aruba and
the Caribbean Island Swim Championships (CISC) in Barbados, along with
two (2) silver medals at the Carifta meet. Along the way, Danielle broke

a whopping eight (8) National 11-12 Age Group records in the backstroke
and individual medley.
The Wesley Worrell Award
Mark Goddard
Born with the condition retinitis pigmentosa, Mark
Goddard has not allowed visual impairment to hinder him from excelling in the field of sport.
Encouraged by his former mentor, Wesley Worrell,
to become involved in sport, Mark visited Turkey
in February 2012 to train in the rudiments of Goal Ball (a scaled down 3
on 3 version of football with smaller goal bars). Mark not only became
proficient in the discipline to the extent that he served as an assistant
coach when the substantive coach was on leave, but went on to captain
the Barbados Goal Ball team.
Mark made the West Indies Blind Cricket team in 2011 playing against
Australia in the Caribbean and subsequently in December 2012 played in
the World Blind Cricket tournament in India. He was appointed captain
of the Barbados Blind Cricket team in 2012.
Mark Goddard’s personal goal is to excel in his sporting discipline and he
encourages sighted persons to be more sensitive to those with a disability
whilst also encouraging those with disabilities to become more active in
sports and recreational activities.

Special Awards
Frank Blackman
The doyen of track and field coaching in Barbados, Frank Blackman started his 50-year career as
a volunteer at the Weymouth and Combermere
grounds, coaching persons within the community
before carrying his voluntary skills over to the Harrison College and Modern High schools. He was
later offered a staff position at Harrison College where he remained for
a few years. He later served as a coach at the then Sports Department
(now National Sports Council) where he worked initially from their Bay
Street office afterwards moving to Blenheim and then the National Stadium. After his stint with the Sports Department, Mr. Blackman went on
to coach at the Christ Church Foundation School for 17 years and then on
a part time basis at the Combermere School for 11 years before retiring.
A tough, demanding coach and strong disciplinarian who stressed on
excellence, Mr. Blackman insisted in the value of hard work and correct
technique to achieve results. His trade mark coaching words to his charges were generally “ … there will be no foolishness today, lots of hard work,
there will be no civitas dancing under my watch!” He was so skilful that he
coached the first man to run the 400m under 50 seconds at the National
Stadium – Leonard Clarke from the United Athletic Club (UAC), and also
the first 400 meter hurdler from Barbados to medal at the Carifta Games
(Frank Baptise).
During his long tenure, Frank Blackman coached a number of outstanding athletes, including Anthony Lovell, Mike Gaskin, Freida Nicholls, June
Caddle, Patsy Callender, Valmay Cadogan, Rueben Bailey, Orlando Greene
and Harcourt Wason, to name a few. Notably, some of these athletes also
became outstanding coaches. He was encouraged in his coaching efforts
by Austin Sealy (now Sir Austin Sealy) and worked with Jim Wedderburn
and top American coach Joe Yancy to continually improve his skills.
A humble yet dedicated servant to athletics in Barbados, Frank Blackman
had the distinct honour of coaching Barbados’ bronze medal champion

Obadele Thompson, who relied heavily on Mr. Blackman’s experience and
knowledge to perfect his running style.
Glyne Clarke
Glyne Clarke has been involved in sports administration for many years, having administered the
sport of basketball locally in various positions including Vice President of the Barbados Amateur
Basketball Association (BABA) between 1989 and
2006.
Glyne started playing basketball for the legendary Royals team and quickly became involved in the administrative aspects of the Club at an early
age, becoming Chairman of the Club at 19 years old. He went on to represent the club at Division 1 for a number of years, in the process winning
some six (6) title trophies before retiring to focus on refereeing when he
became the island’s 2nd FIBA referee in 1991. He had the honour of serving as a referee at many regional and international Championships until
2006.
In 1996, he was elected to the post of Vice President for Technical Operations of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) where he
streamlined the Championship guidelines and hosting requirements. He
spearheaded the development of referees and improved the standard of
basketball officiating regionally. Glyne has also been a Technical Director
at the CBC championships since 1996.
In 2007, Glyne went on to become a certified FIBA Referees instructor
and Commissioner. He has officiated internationally at all levels as a Commissioner and conducted regional Certification Clinics for referees.
In June 2014, with overwhelming support from the 24 member countries,
Glyne was elected unopposed as President of the Caribbean Basketball
Confederation (CBC). Glyne now sits on the Executive of the FIBA Americas Central Board and is a Vice President of the Central American & Caribbean Basketball Confederation.
Glyne is currently employed as the General Manager of the Barbados
Olympic Association Inc.

Nigel Harper
The erudite and visionary Nigel Harper, was the
Chief Sports Officer of the then Sports Department
(later National Sports Council) from 1973 to 1976.
Early in his tenure, Mr. Harper wrote a paper on the
Role of Sport in National Development, and then
set the platform for future sports development by
introducing many innovations in the programmes of the Sports Department. Most importantly was the execution of the National Independence
Festival of Youth Sports in 1974, in seven disciplines, with every parish
except St. Michael having a representative selection. St. Michael had
four selections (North, South, East and West). He also inspired the development of five (5) parish football leagues beginning with Christ Church
through the enthusiasm of football official, Gordon Douglas. The other
parishes were St. Lucy, St. Peter, St. John and St. George.
During this time, Mr. Harper also developed seven football fields at the
Garrison Savannah to accommodate youth football on Saturday mornings. He brought all the existing and available public playing fields up to a
reasonable standard and proposed the hierarchical development of new
playing fields across Barbados under what was called the ‘Bold Plan’.
Originating from Carrington Village, Nigel Harper was also closely associated with the Weymouth Wales Football club and the development of
football in general. He was President and Manager of Weymouth Wales
(1961 – 1979), Secretary of the Referees Association (1964 – 1966), Secretary of the Barbados Football Association (1976 – 1977), Foundation
Member of the Caribbean Football Union (1976) Senior Vice President
(1986 – 1990), Chairman, Youth Committee (1994 – 1995) and Chairman,
Technical Committee (1988 – 1990).
In 1973, Mr. Harper incorporated Football Barbados and sought to introduce Professional and Semi-Professional Football, preparing a memorandum on the planned development of professional and semi-professional
football in Barbados.
To facilitate this initiative, he created a professional team Pride of
Bridgetown, made up principally of Weymouth Wales players and went

on to host A.S. Presse France Antilles of Martinique, Jong Colombia of
Curacao, Maple, the Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago and Nautico
of Brazil.
Out of his relationship with the Barbados Football Association (BFA) and
with the CFU, Mr. Harper sought in 1981 to develop a Caribbean Antilles
Football League and played a leading role the hosting of F.I.F.A./Coca Cola
World Football Youth Academy from 12 – 19 April 1989. Further, he led
strategies to organize youth competitions island-wide and to carry out a
youth coaching and training programme which resulted in the Barbados
Football Academy and a National Youth Football Coaching and Training
Programme 1995-2000.
Trevor Thorpe
A trained journalist, Trevor Thorpe’s media career
started at the Barbados Rediffusion, now StarCom
Network in 1977, under then News Editor Carl
Moore, before moving to the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a reporter attached to the
Sports Desk. He also worked for the Barbados Advocate and Nation Newspaper before taking up an
appointment in 1988 with the Beacon Newspaper in the British Virgin
Islands (BVI) as a News and Sports Editor and later became Programme
Director of Radio ZBVI in Tortola.
It was the exposure as Editor of the tourist publication ‘The Today’ Magazine in St.Maarten and later Station Manager of FBN Television and News
Anchorman that created the desire for a motorsport publication on his return to Barbados. Thus was born the publication ‘Motoring News’ which
is described as the mouthpiece of the motoring industry.
Recognised by most of the manufacturers in the industry, Motoring News
also keeps readers abreast of international trends and developments,
highlights some of the big names in motorsport of yesteryear and keeps
a close eye on up and coming events; drivers and co-drivers. It is the first
and only local publication dedicated to motorsport and the automotive
industry, additionally covering break-throughs in the industry with regard
to technology, new vehicles, training, after sales, milestones and other
services.

He is the host and producer of The RPM Report; an automotive programme heard on 98.1 FM on Wednesdays at 12:45pm and ‘DriveTime’
a motorsport programme heard on the same station on Fridays at 5:15
pm.
Family Award
The Jones/Louis Family
These talented siblings have dominated a range of sporting disciplines
in Barbados to the extent that their names are etched on the pages and
record books of Barbados sporting history.
The youngest of the quartet, Akela, the outstanding multi-talented track
and field athlete, was a standout performer for Hilda Skeene at the NAPSAC level and further enhanced her value as an outstanding performer for
Springer Memorial at the BSSAC level. At this level Akela broke numerous

records and was crowned Victrix Ludorum on a few occasions. She continued to perform with excellence at the Carifta level to the extent that in
her last year of eligibility, in April 2014, she was awarded the prestigious
Austin Sealy Award for the Most Outstanding Athlete at the Games.
In June 2014, she stunned the athletic world and made history for Barbados as she became the first ever athlete to win Gold at the IAAF World
Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in the long jump, with a leap
of 6.34 meters.
Standing at 6 ft 8 inches and weighing 250 pounds, 22 year old John was
an also an outstanding Track & Field Athlete and Basketballer at the Garrison Secondary School (now Graydon Sealy Secondary School) and record
holder in the Shot Putt, Javelin and Discus. John was voted as Sportsperson of the Decade at the Graydon Sealy Secondary School, 2002-2012.
John was also an outstanding junior athlete on the Barbados National
track and field team, winning Carifta Games medals in 2007 with Gold in
the Javelin and Silver in Shot Putt. In 2009, he was a silver-medallist in the
Javelin.
John gained a basketball scholarship to Howe College in the U.S.A. in 2009
and is currently on another scholarship to Illinois State University. He is a
member of the NCCA Division 1 Illinois State Men’s Basketball Team and
also the Barbados Men’s Basketball National Team.
The third sibling, Jonathan is a product of the Alexandra School and a gifted footballer. Having received many accolades from the school for being
an outstanding sportsman and footballer, Jonathan first played competitively for the Cosmos Football Club in the Barbados Football Association
(BFA) Division 2 competition, before going on to play for the Youth Milan
Football Club from 2002 to 2004.
Jonathan received a football scholarship to NCCA Division 1 Syracuse University and on his return played for the Technico Football Club.
The eldest of the siblings, Irecka was a track & field athlete at the St.
Lucy Primary and then the St. Lucy Secondary School (now Daryl Jordan
Secondary School) competing in the Barbados Secondary School Athletic
(BSSAC) games from 1st to 5th form. She also played Netball and Volleyball for her secondary school.

From the age of 14 years, Irecka played 1st Division Netball for Rockers
and then went on to play for the Pine Hill St Barnabas Netball Club in the
Barbados Netball Association (BNA) competitions, receiving numerous
awards. She has played for the Tigers Basketball Club from 1998 to present, winning eight (8) straight Knockout and League Tournaments with
that team along the way.
Irecka received many sports awards in the disciplines of Volleyball, Netball
and Basketball. She received the Barbados Youth Service Sports Award in
1998 and the Best Spiker Award playing for the Barbados Youth Service
Team at the end of the 1999-2000 tournament. She was named Best
Goalkeeper in the Barbados Workers’ Union Netball Competitions for
1998, 1999 & 2000 and the Best Defensive Player in the BABA Women’s
League in 2002 and received a Basketball Scholarship in 2002 to Globe
Institute of Technology in New York City.
Irecka represented Barbados in Netball at the Commonwealth Games in
Melbourne Australia (2006) and also represented Barbados on the Women’s Senior Basketball Team from 2001 to 2009.
Indeed an outstanding family of Barbadian sportspersons.

Seniors Award
Winston Reid
A former Barbados and West Indies A orthodox
slow left hand spinner, Winston Reid had been one
of Barbados’ and West Indies A’s most successful
spin bowlers with over 250 wickets in sixteen (16)
seasons. He was awarded the West Indies Players
Association (WIPA) Lifetime Achievement Award in
2013.
Generally tight and miserly with his bowling, Winston has transitioned to an equally effective bowler for his home Club
Wildey (formerly Banks) in the Barbados Cricket Association’s (BCA) Masters Division. However, when the Wildey Sports Club was demoted to the
Division 1 in 2012, Winston Reid was called upon to revive their fortunes
back to the Elite Division status. The 52 year old veteran responded admirably, grabbing a season high 59 wickets to vault Wildey back to the Elite
Division for the 2015 season.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Rev. Dr. Sir Wesley Hall Knight of St. Andrew
A man for all seasons, the legendary Sir Wesley
Hall is the quintessence of sport achievement in
Barbados. Born to poor and humble beginnings in
a single parent family at Station Hill, St. Michael,
Wesley Hall’s formative years were spent at the
Back Ivy, St. Lawrence and Grazettes Housing area districts. He attended
the St. Giles Primary School and then won a scholarship to the Combermere School at Waterford, St. Michael.

At the Combermere School, young Wesley was initially a wicketkeeper
batsman before putting his tall and powerful frame to good use in the
Barbados Cricket League (BCL) competitions as a fast bowler. He proved a
frightening prospect for opposing batsmen, with a long bounding run up,
high leg lift and follow through, along with equally frightening pace. He
played one match for Barbados before being picked, more on potential,
to tour England in 1957 with the West Indies team.
Though only performing modestly on that initial tour, he was again called
up to the side to tour India and Pakistan in 1958-59. He took 46 wickets
in eight (8) Tests, and he was a regular thereafter. In the classic Tied Test
on 1961 at Brisbane he took 9 for 203, and bowled the last over when six
runs were needed for victory with three wickets left.
Against India in 1961-62, he grabbed 27 wickets at 15.74 and in 1963,
partnered by his fellow Barbadian and pace partner Charlie Griffith, they
demolished the England batting lineup. At Lord’s, in another epic finish,
he bowled unchanged for three-and-a-half hours and took 4 for 93. In
the 1964-65 tour his 16 wickets were instrumental in guiding West Indies
to their first series win over Australia. He retired, along with his partner
Griffith, at the end of the 1968-69 tour of Australia and New Zealand,
with 192 Test wickets and 818 runs. He was the first West Indian to take a
hat-trick in Pakistan in 1959.
After his playing days Hall entered Barbadian politics, serving in both the
Barbados Senate and House of Assembly and was appointed Minister of
Tourism in 1987. In that capacity, he was able to fuse the key ministries of
sport and tourism, making Barbados the second country in the world at
the time, after Egypt, to join the two ministries. He was also involved in
the administration of West Indies cricket as a selector and team manager
and served as President of the West Indies Cricket Board from 2001 to
2003.
A brilliant speaker, who in 2012 was awarded the honour of Knight of
St. Andrew for services to sport and the community. Sir Wesley is much
sought-after at cricket dinner functions as an orator. Sir Wesley was also
ordained as a minister in the Christian Pentecostal Church and is a member of the West Indies Cricket Hall of Fame.

Livingstone Headley
A veteran of over 25 years in cycling, a Level 1 cycling coach and official, and Racing Secretary for
the Barbados Cycling Union (BCU), Livingstone
Headley has taken his love for the sport to the next
level by becoming the island’s first National Commissaire. The designation, which sees him being
the most qualified person on island to officiate cycling events, also qualifies Mr. Headley to assist international commissaires at regional events.
Mr. Headley completed his course in October 2014 in Puerto Rico at the
Caribbean Cycling Championships. The criteria for Certification included
a gruelling three-day session and a two-hour examination. Livingstone
Headley received the second-highest marks from a field of eight. The
Commissaire’s role includes actually controlling the entire cycling event
in terms of disqualification, giving time-penalties, relegating the cyclist or
issuing a suspension and this designation is one step under the International Cycling Union’s (UCI) commissaire status.
Andrew Mallalieu
Barbados Motoring Federation (BMF) President
Andrew Mallalieu etched Barbados’ name in motor sport history when in November 2014 he became the first FIA Formula 1 Steward from the
English-speaking Caribbean to officiate at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
This appointment was the culmination of more than 25 years in motor
sport administration. Mr. Mallalieu first attended the Grand Prix as a
trainee before graduating in 2014 to the position of Steward.

Mr. Mallalieu is a former member of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Committee of Management and former Club Treasurer. He became the FIA
delegate for the BRC in 1994 and subsequently became founding President of the BMF in 2000.
Sports Tourism Award
SOL (Barbados) Ltd.
In 2008, the Barbados Rally Club (BRC) and
the SOL Group, the Caribbean’s largest Independent oil company, inked a three (3) year
agreement to expand the club’s premiere annual event – SOL Rally Barbados.
That agreement, which at the time was the largest single sponsorship deal
in the history of the Rally Club, was also supplemented with another new
BRC event, the Shell V-Power King of the Hill, which acted as a prelude
to the SOL Rally. Motoring fans and international overseas competitors
lapped up these two events, as motor sport in Barbados was taken to an
altogether new level, in terms of participation, competitiveness and tourism appeal. In 2014, SOL Rally Barbados pumped approximately Bds $4
million dollars into the Barbados economy during the 2-week period.
In 2011, the SOL group later recommitted to a further five (5) year agreement with the BRC for SOL Rally Barbados. This foundation paved the
way for the largest and most exciting motor sports events held for the
first time in the Caribbean and the Americas – the Top Gear Festival (May
2014) and the Race of Champions (December 2014) at the newly renovated Bushy Park Circuit. The SOL Group’s interest was through thier
Mercedes/Simpson Motors connections which brought ace Formula One
Driver Lewis Hamilton to the Top Gear Festival, and German Pascal Wehrlien as a Test Driver at the highly acclaimed Race of Champions (ROC)
event.

Over the past 15 years, Sagicor General has
contributed significantly to the development
of sports in Barbados. The year 2014 was an
extension of that sponsorship, which included the disciplines of cricket, squash, golf and
bodybuilding. In cricket, Sagicor General sponsored the following which
fell under the organization of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA): The
Super-Cup, Shield and Twenty/20 competitions. Additionally, they sponsored the Barbados Cricket Umpires Association and former Barbados
and West Indies batting star, Collis King, who coached the St. Leonards
Cricket Team to two (2) cricket school titles in 2014.
Sagicor General also sponsored the Barbados Junior National Championships, the Barbados Family Golf Championships and the Darcy Beckles
Invitational Bodybuilding Classic. Additionally, they sponsored three (3)
bodybuilding and Fitness athletes – Stevenson Belle, Domini Alleyne and

Badminton Association
The Barbados Badminton Association has
been an exemplar association with respect to
developmental and administrative initiatives.
Responding efficiently to various requirements
of the National Sports Council, they have in a timely manner produced
all requisite documentation of yearly plans and audited financial statements. Further, the Association has over the last three (3) years instituted
a Saturday morning coaching initiative called the ‘Early Bird’ programme
aimed at developing young athletes.

This initiative has borne fruit in that there has not only been an increase
in juniors attached to the programme but also an increase in the pool
available for junior national selection. The result of 27 medals was the
highest medal tally at the CAREBACO championships held in Jamaica,
September 2014.
Building on these results, the Barbados Badminton Association is seeking to introduce a new programme called ‘Shuttle Time’ and a Masters
League programme for 2015.
Club Award
Empire Cricket Club
Celebrating its 100th year in 2014, the Empire Cricket Club marked that achievement
in grand style with a series of outstanding
performances at the Club and Individual
level in the disciplines of cricket and hockey.
In the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Elite Division, Empire crushed
the opposition, playing unbeaten to capture the title. Prolific all-rounder
Kevin Stoute captained the Barbados Senior Team that won the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) NAGICO Super 50 Crown. In addition, four (4)
members currently represent Barbados in the WICB Professional Cricket
League (PCL), while six (6) members were named in the Barbados 35-man
provisional squad for the NAGICO Super 50, 2015. (No other club has
more than 4 selectees.)
In Hockey, the Empire Ladies team were the Barbados Hockey Association (BHA) Hockey 7s repeat Champions; the Ladies’ and Men’s teams
were repeat indoor champions; while the Ladies’ team are the reigning
knockout champions. To complete a great year in hockey, three (3) males
and five (5) females were selected to represent Barbados at the Central
American and Caribbean (CAC) games held in Mexico. These included
Dionne Clarke, the Barbados captain, and Iyana Wilson who carried the
flag as the youngest member of the squad at 16 years old.

Pine Hill St. Barnabas
Netball Club
Now in its 26th year, the Pine Hill St. Barnabas
Netball Club proved a beacon among Barbadian
netball clubs in 2014. In the Barbados Netball Association (BNA) League
and Knockout competitions, the Club’s Division 1 team won both of these
titles; their Division 2 team placed second (2nd) in the League and won
the Intermediate Knockout, while the Division 3 team won the Junior
Knockout title.
In addition to the Club’s on the court successes, several members excelled
in the sport at the national level. Seven (7) members, amongst them
coach Julie Philips and Captain Sheniqua Thomas, were included in the
Barbados Under-16 team to the 2014 Jean Pierre Regional Championship
held in Antigua. Miss. Thomas was also awarded the President’s Award
and voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for Barbados while promising
young player Brianna Holder, who played on the Combined Islands Team,
was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for her team.
At the senior level, four (4) members were a part of the senior team
which participated at the Northern Island Netball festival, the Goodwill Games versus St. Lucia, the Jamaica Warm Up Series and the Commonwealth Games. Of these players, Ms. Laurel Browne and Ms. Samantha Browne reached their 100th and 50th caps, respectively, as
national players, while Mrs. Shonette Azore-Bruce was voted Best Defensive Player at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Mr. Dennis Callender,
Vice President of the Club, was appointed trainer of the national team.
Pinelands Basketball Club
The Pinelands Sports Club Division One basketball
team became the 2014 double crown Champions
gaining both the League and the Knockout Titles in
the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) competitions. Their
Second Division team also competed well in the various competitions,
making the playoffs in the League competition but was defeated in the Finals of the Knockout competition. Four of Pinelands Division One players

were then selected to represent Barbados in the Senior National Basketball team at the 2014 Caribbean Championships held in the British Virgin
Islands.
Team Award
Barbados Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (BABBFF) Team
Barbados bodybuilders ruled supreme at
the 42nd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships held in
St. Martin on October 4th, 2014, winning the team title for a record 32nd
time by more than 100 points. Such was the dominance of the Barbados
team that the final pose-down featured three Barbadians, Ramon Dodson, who won the overall title in the Men’s Physique over 178 cm class;
Marlon Dottin who won the 174 cm class and Jamil Jones who was king
of the class for competitors up to 178 cm. Dottin emerged as the overall
Barbados champion. Additionally, Tanisha Cross won the Women’s Fitness division.
Barbados Cricket
Association Senior Team
It was an extremely successful year for the Barbados
Cricket Association Senior Team. Under the leadership of the young opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite, Barbados won the West Indies Cricket Board’s
regional first class championship. Brathwaite led by example, scoring 471
runs at an average of 42.81, while experienced left hand spinner Sulieman
Benn copped the second most wickets – 37 at an average of 15.45. Ashley Nurse, Carlos Brathwaite and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich recorded
maiden first class centuries, while all-rounder Nurse also bagged 32 wickets at an average of 18.43.

There was double success for Barbados as Kevin Stoute led the one day
team to the NAGICO Super 50 title, defeating host country Trinidad and
Tobago in the final. The dashing Dwayne Smith was the star performer.
Barbados
Davis Cup Team
Barbados has been competing in the
Americas Zone of the Tennis premier
World Cup event called the Davis Cup
for 25 years. The Team was promoted to Group 2 in 2012, and has competed successfully in this Group since then, winning the Group in 2014
and gaining promotion to Group 1 for the first time.
In Group 2, Barbados has competed against much bigger countries with
tennis and other resources far exceeding those of Barbados. In 2014, Barbados competed in a Group with Bolivia, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Mexico, Paraguay and Peru, and the Team had wins against the No. 1
seed, Chile, and the No. 2 seed, Mexico, as well as against El Salvador.
In Group 1, the Team is scheduled to compete in 2015 against the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay for a place in the World
Group. The first tie takes place in Barbados in March 2015.

No. 1 Player, Darian King, has made 31 Davis Cup appearances,
with 22 wins and 9 losses.
No. 2 Player, Haydn Lewis, is the Team veteran, having
represented Barbados for the last 11 years and played in 39 ties.
He has more wins and losses than any other Barbados Davis Cup
Player, with 61 Davis Cup appearances, clocking 41 wins and
20 losses.
No. 3: Seanon Williams is the baby of the Team, with 3 wins and
8 losses.
No. 4: Russell Moseley is another veteran, with 46
appearances – 9 wins and 17 losses.

Finally, non-playing Captain, Kevin Yarde, has captained the Team
since 2006, starting out in Group 4. He oversaw the Team’s
promotion to Group 3 the following year, and after a period
of relegation to Group 4 in 2009 and 2010, he again steered
the Team to promotion to Group 2 in 2012 and now to Group 1
in 2015.
Media Award
Marsha Boyce
Marsha Boyce has been a Sports journalist at the
Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for the
past seven (7) years. In 2014, the former Harrison
College student produced, researched and edited
a special 2014 FIFA World Cup feature entitled ‘On
the Ball’. This feature was produced and presented
for both radio and television and was unique in
that it highlighted historical moments and personalities in addition to
little-known facts, figures and achievements. During the year, Ms. Boyce
produced and hosted the CBS Sports Express on 94.7FM that centred on
the BCA Elite, First Division, Super Cup and T20 competitions and included coverage of various other sporting disciplines. She also produced the
CBC Sports sportscast, cricket radio talk show called ‘Midwicket’ and was
a member of the broadcast team for the 2014 Pine Hill National Primary
Schools Athletics Championships (NAPSAC).
Along with the traditional sports, Marsha reported and covered a number
of ‘non-traditional’ sports such as, but not limited to, Equestrian, Surfing and Mixed Martial Arts. Other key events covered during the year
included the Barbados Independence Soup Bowl Pro, Sol Rally Barbados
and the 2014 Year in Review for radio.

Shawn Greene
The highlight of Shawn’s year in sports journalism
included the production of a special 80 minute
feature entitled ‘Empire’s Empire’, which looked at
the 100 year history of the club. Included were interviews from former presidents, fans, players and
family in all three disciplines of the club – cricket,
hockey and soccer.
The contribution of Empire as the first social and sports club for the working class was also highlighted through some of its greats including Sir Everton Weekes and the legacy of Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Conrad Hunte.
The Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) also shared in the club’s
double celebration by highlighting their 100th anniversary tour to the U.K,
including a feature at the Lord’s Cricket ground. This brought home the
views of the international world regarding Empire’s contribution to Barbados. Included were the views of former England captain Mike Gatting
and many ex-Empire members and West Indians now living in the U.K.
Mr. Greene also produced the third season of sports television game
show, ‘Ahead Of The Game’ which allows the island’s alumni associations
to compete in sports trivia and fun-filled activities.
Mike King
Celebrating his 35th year in Journalism in 2014,
the irrepressible Nation sports journalist Mike King
added a new feature, the popular ‘King of Stats’
highlighting the national, regional and international achievements of Barbadian sportspersons past
and present. This feature was supplemented with
current information on another innovation ‘Athlete
of the Week’ feature. Mr. King also did sterling work in Track and Field in
particular Inter school sports and enhanced the profile of Judo and Road
Tennis.

Adding to his overall coverage of Bodybuilding and analysis of West Indies
cricket, Mr. King covered the return of the Commonwealth Teams and
wrote extensively on the historic Top Gear and Race of Champions motoring events at Bushy Park.
Justin Marville
Justin Marville had a very productive year in 2014
covering a variety of sporting disciplines. Along
with extensive coverage of local basketball, lawn
tennis and domestic cycling, Mr. Marville was able
to produce at least one by-line story in 20 different
local sporting disciplines.
He provided on-the-spot reports, stories and analyses from Tortola for
the men’s national team at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation’s regional championships. He also covered every angle of Barbados’ successful tennis campaign in Group II of the Davis Cup’s Americas Zone.
Significantly, Justin’s weekly ‘On The Ball’ sports column extended beyond
basketball and tennis analysis to touch almost every major breaking story
in local sports.

since 1967, this present administrator returned to
Barbados from Bermuda in 1973 and immediately
set about stamping his authority upon the sport.
He took part in many competitions and was the
undefeated Middleweight and Open Champion for a long time. He also
travelled to Canada for competitions being successful there as well.
In 1996 he started his own school. In 2000 he challenged for and won the

position of President of the Judo Association, a post he still holds today.
He is presently the President of the Caribbean Judo Federation and VicePresident of the Pan-American Judo Confederation.
Barbados was successful in the bid to host the inaugural 2014 Central
American and Caribbean Games (CAC) Judo Qualifier – March 14th and
15th. This was a chance to showcase Barbados not only as a Judo competing nation but also in terms of organizing and officiating in a world
class event.
Judokas from across the English, Spanish and French Caribbean, and Central and Latin America competed in the tourney. These constituted some
15 countries, 400 athletes and officials.
Barbados also hosted the Pan American Judo Cup, October 4th to 5th. This
event was also a qualifier for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.
This was one of the most highly competitive tournaments and Minister of
Sport, the Hon. Stephen Lashley, lauded the Association for hosting such
a prestigious tourney. Some 22 teams again from the Caribbean, Central
and Latin America and the United States participated in the highly successful tournament.
Finally, from December 6th to 14th Barbados hosted the International
Judo tourney that again was successfully organized.
At year end, therefore, Hoskins Caddle had successfully organized three
(3) International Competitions. He sees it as necessary for the structure of
the Judo schools to be aligned to that of the national federation. He also
views it as critical, for officials at all levels to be trained and certified and
be willing to give back to the sport. Mr. Caddle dreams of the discipline
of Judo being introduced to as many school-age children as possible and
is actively seeking to begin this journey by starting with three (3) schools
in 2015.

Dr. Andrew Forde
Dr. Forde was the 1st Vice President of the Association for two years before becoming the President
for the last seven. Over this period, he has functioned as the Manager, Chief Delegate and Delegate for Barbados teams to several championships.
At the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) level
he has been responsible for the execution and management of drug testing for the CAC Anti-Doping Commission. For the past three years, Dr.
Forde has also been the Chairman of the Medical Commission for the
CAC, and was re-elected to the post in 2014.
Dr. Forde was also installed on the disciplinary committee for the National
Anti-Doping Commission (NADC) in 2014.
During his tenure, the Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (BABBFF) produced three international Judges (in 2014) and two
new continental judges. Additionally, Barbados is still the dominant bodybuilding and fitness team at the CAC level having won the CAC title on six
occasions in the last eight years.
In 2014, the Barbados team won seven divisions at the CAC Championships and gained two IFBB pro cards. Barbados has won a total of eight
pro cards in the last eight years.

Dr. Raymond Forde
President of the Barbados Tennis Association for
the past 16 years, Dr. Raymond Forde has helped
to propel Tennis to new heights, and 2014 would
rank as one of his most outstanding years. He personally set the example with a Gold medal in the
55-59 age category at the Senior Games held in
Utah, U.S.A. and also reached the Finals of the Caribbean Philips Trophy
Singles played in Cancun, Mexico.
These successes no doubt set the tone and acted as further inspiration for
Dr. Forde to keep Barbados’ Tennis on the upward path. Setting the necessary structures in place for the development of youth tennis and implementing strategy for the upward movement of senior tennis, Raymond’s
rewards were impressive international wins for the Under-18 ladies and
semi-final placings in the male section at the Coca Cola ITF Junior Tournament in St. Lucia (August 2014). The icing on the cake was the impressive
Davis Cup team which defied expectations and continually beat higher
ranked opponents for a place in Group 1 for 2015.
Coach of the Year
Gabriel Burnett
A former Barbados Track and Field athlete, Gabriel
Barnett turned his attention to coaching after retiring from competitive hurdling in 2003. Founder
of the popular Quantum Leap Athletic Programme
and a Physical Education teacher at the St. Michael
School, Gabriel has also been appointed the Assistant Coach and Head Coach of Barbados’ Carifta and Junior Athletic
teams at various times.
Now the personal coach of Levi Cadogan, the fastest junior male on the
island and the fourth fastest in the world, Gabriel coached him to success
at the Carifta games, IAAF World Championships and the 2014 Central
American and Caribbean Games (CAC).

Henderson Springer
Former Spartan and Barbados off-spinner, Henderson Springer has been coaching the Barbados
cricket team since December 2000. In that period,
he has won twelve (12) regional trophies and has
shared one (1). The year 2014 has proved an exceptional one, as Head Coach, Henderson guided the
Barbados team to two major titles, the Regional 4 day and the NAGICO
Super 50. Additionally, Mr. Springer was the Assistant Coach for the Barbados Tridents team which won the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title.
Always demanding high standards from his charges and always willing to
improve his coaching profession, Henderson seeks even further successes
in the coming years for Barbados’ cricket.
Kevin Yarde
An International Tennis Federation (ITF) Level 2
and a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTR) coach from 1992, Kevin has captained
the Barbados Davis Cup Team since 2006, while
in Group 4. He guided the Team’s promotion to
Group 3 the following year, and after a period of
relegation to Group 4 in 2009 and 2010, he again steered the Team to
promotion to Group 2 in 2012 and now Group 1 into 2015.
The non-playing captain and coach of the team helped to inspire a country to believe the seemingly ‘impossible’ with wins over the higher ranked
El Salvador, Chile and Mexico. In 2014, Barbados became the smallest
country to win the Group 2 stage which was a remarkable achievement in
the team’s 25 year history of Davis Cup competition.

Athletics Association
of Barbados
The Athletics Association of Barbados had a
series of outstanding results as their athletes
ensured that 2014 would be one to remember. At the Carifta level, Barbadian athletes took home 18 medals, 5 Gold, 6 Silver and 7 Bronze medals
with the outstanding Akela Jones being awarded the coveted Austin Sealy
Award as the Best Athlete for the Games.
Following on to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships held in Mexico, Barbados gained 9 medals with both Jones in
the 100 metre hurdles (13.35 secs) and Tia-Adana Belle in the 400 metre
hurdles (57.58 secs) establishing new national junior records. Akela Jones
also reaped success at the World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon winning Gold in the long jump (6.34 meters) in the process becoming the first Barbadian to win Gold at these championships. Sprinter Levi
Cadogan also finished fourth (4th) in the 100 metres at the World Juniors
in a commendable 10.39 secs.
Another historical achievement was gained at the 2014 Commonwealth
Games in Scotland, when three of Barbados’ athletes, Shane Brathwaite,
Ryan Brathwaite and Greggmar Swift reached the finals of the 110 metre
hurdles, with Shane Brathwaite earning a Bronze medal. Women hurdler
Kierre Beckles also reached the finals of the 100 metre event at the Commonwealth Games.
More success was to come at the Central American and Caribbean Games
(CAC) in Veracruz, Mexico where Barbados won three medals on the track,
Levi Cadogan – 100 metres (silver), Kierre Beckles – 100 metre hurdles
(bronze) and Greggmar Swift – 110 metre hurdles (bronze).

Overall, the Athletics Association has much to be proud of in 2014 and
looks forward to scaling new heights in 2015 and beyond.
Barbados Cricket
Association
One of the oldest National Associations of Barbados, the Barbados Cricket Association was established in 1933
and organises cricket from the level of
Under-13 Juniors to test matches which it coordinates on behalf of the
West Indies Cricket Board. During the year 2014 the Barbados Cricket
Association successfully hosted the following: 3-match T20 Series against
England, a Test match against New Zealand and the Second edition of the
Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
In addition, Barbados Cricket teams won the WICB President’s Cup (4 day)
retaining the trophy that they had won in 2013; the NAGICO Super 50
Competition, the Regional Girls’ Under 19 T20 Competition and the Regional Boys’ Under 17 Competition.
Barbados Bodybuilding
and Fitness Federation
Barbados won its thirty-second title out of forty-two Central American
and Caribbean Championships in St. Martin, on October 4th, 2014.
With a team consisting of ten (10) new athletes (out of a team of 23),
Barbados was able to win eight divisions. Three of these new athletes
became champions and out of these three, two were conferred IFBB Pro
status.
Indeed, Barbados became the first country to have all three representatives in the final pose-down for the Men’s Physique overall. Barbados also
had the distinction of producing the first two IFBB Men’s Physique Pros,
with Ramon Dodson following in the footsteps of Maurice Arthur.

New female Fitness Pro, Tanisha Cross, dominated the Finals in 2014.
The BABBFF has produced fourteen (14) IFBB pros in the last twelve years.

Barbados Tennis
Association
The Barbados Tennis Association continues to be an association of outstanding achievements backed by a supportive general membership. The Association has put
a number of initiatives in place at the junior level to ensure its strident
youth development. These initiatives include: the School Tennis Initiative
(STI), the Performance Tennis Initiative (PTI) for the best juniors and the
Equipment Distribution Programme (EDP).
The result of these initiatives was that Cherise Slocombe and Kiana Marshall won the Under 18 doubles tournament at the Coca-Cola 2014 Junior
ITF Tournament held in St. Lucia. Three other junior under-18 males also
reached the semi-finals of that event.
Perhaps the Association’s greatest triumph was at the senior level with
its Davis Cup Team placing at the top of Group 2 through beating higher
seeded countries.

Junior Outstanding Sportsperson
– Female
Akela Jones
The ‘Queen Bee’ of track and field in Barbados, the
young and confident Akela Jones ensured a remarkable year with a series of outstanding results in
2014. Akela, in her last year at the Carifta Games,
won three individual gold medals and copped the
Austin Sealy Award for the most outstanding athlete. Further success was to come at the CAC Juniors in Mexico where she
received a gold medal in the Under-20 Girls’ long jump with a leap of 6.41
metres and also established a new national junior mark in the 100 metre
hurdles with a time of 13.35 secs.
Akela then created history by becoming the first athlete from Barbados
to win a medal of any colour at the IAAF World Junior Championships as
she won the long jump final with a leap of 6.34m. Sixth at the 2011 IAAF
World Youth Championships, Jones took the lead in the opening round
with 6.32 metres and improved to 6.34 metres into a strong -2.7m/s head
wind. To cap a fine year, young Jones gained an athletic scholarship to
Oklahoma Baptist University in August 2014.
Tiffani Lynch
Tiffani Lynch continues to excel in the discipline of
dance. Tiffani, a Queen’s College fifth former, along
with her dance partner Shane Alleyne, copped the
Gold medal at the Imperial Society of Teachers
of Dance (ISTD) Grand Finals in Winter Gardens,
Blackpool, England. It was the first time that a
Barbadian couple had scored the highest points in that competition and
there was also the rare occurrence of teenagers out dancing the more
seasoned adults to win in the Under 35 Adult Latin category.

At the World Dance Championships in Paris, France, the couple once
again excelled winning two (2) gold and three (3) silver medals in the Latin
dance and Ballroom categories.
Hayley Matthews
Hayley had an impressive year in Track & Field and
Cricket. The Harrison College student started the
year with a Silver medal in the Javelin (43.17 meters) at the Carifta Games held in Martinique in
April 2014. She then copped a bronze medal at the
Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Juniors in
Mexico with a Javelin throw of 44.88 meters.
It was in cricket, however, that young Matthews was to make her mark
internationally. First selected to the West Indies Women’s Cricket squad
in August 2014, 16 year old Hayley would make her senior West Indies
debut against New Zealand at Kingstown, St. Vincent in September 2014.
She then made her One Day International (ODI) debut in November in an
ICC 4-match series against the Australians. She confidently started with
an impressive half century (55) on the way to topping the averages with
241 runs at 60.25. She also grabbed 3 wickets with her off-spin bowling.
Certainly, one of the bright stars in West Indies Women’s cricket for the
future.
Chelsea Tuach
Barbados’ multiple Junior and National Open
Women’s Surf Champion and the island’s Sports
Personality for 2013 and third ranked Junior female
surfer in the world, Chelsea Tuach, has continued
to impress on the world stage.
She started off the 2014 ASP Pro Junior season
with a win at the inaugural event at Soup Bowl, and made the semi finals
of both the Ron Jon Junior Pro at Sheppard’s Park, Cocoa Beach, Florida
in March and the Vans US Open of Surf at Huntington Beach, California in
July. She took second place at the Chain Resources Junior Pro in Taranki,
New Zealand in April and ended the ASP North American Pro Junior sea44
son a close second to U.S.A.’s Meah Collins after leading the rankings for
most of the year. She qualified for the second consecutive year for the
ASP World Junior Surfing Championships which were held in Ericeira, Portugal at the end of October 2014. There, she ended third overall for the
second straight year and was the highest placed North American Junior,
male or female.
Chelsea also had four top twenty finishes in San Bartolo Peru in March,
at the Los Cabos Pro in Mexico in June, the Swatch Girls’ Pro in Landes,
France in August and the Pantin Classic in Galicia, Spain also in August.
She ended the season as the second highest ranked female from the
North American region, after World Championship Tour surfer, Sage Erikson. She is ranked 25th out of more than two hundred professional
female surfers from around the world – the highest ranking ever of a Barbadian surfer on the ASP World Qualification Series.
Chelsea ended her season taking her second consecutive win of the ASP
Soup Bowl Junior Pro in mid-November which signals the start of the 2015
Junior Pro season and catapults her to the top of the ASP North American
Junior Pro rankings.
Just one week later she took the win at the Association of Professional
Surfing of Puerto Rico’s Corona Pro held at Middles and was crowned the
overall Series Champion after three (3) events – the first Barbadian surfer
to achieve this honour.
Sada Williams
Unheralded newcomer Sada Williams announced
herself in 2014 as an athlete who will one day bring
further recognition to Barbados in athletics. A
member of the Elite Distance Programme and the
Coleridge Parry School, Sada emerged from the shadows to win gold at
the Carifta Games in Martinique in a record time of 53.39 secs in the Under 18 Girls 400 metres – a time that was even faster than the senior girls.
She also won a silver medal in the 200 metres (23.34 secs). Her times
allowed her to qualify for the World Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China
where she finished 7th in the 400 metres in a time of 54.26 secs.

Junior Outstanding Sportsperson
– Male
Shane Alleyne
At 16 years old, Shane Alleyne can be described as
a seasoned Ballroom and Latin dancer, having been
dancing for 11 years. During this period, he has
been Barbados’ National Champion in the Juvenile
and Junior categories and is currently the Youth
champion. A well rounded person, the tall Lower
sixth form Harrison College student, is also a member of the Barbados
Youth Orchestra and a member of the Harrison College’s Volleyball and
Track and Field teams.
In 2014, Shane stamped his class on the Ballroom and Latin section winning Gold along with his partner, Tiffani Lynch at the Imperial Society of
Teachers of Dance (ISTD) Grand Finals in Blackpool, England – the Mecca
of Ballroom Dancing in the world. The combination of Alleyne and Lynch
again highly successful winning two (2) Gold and Three (3) Silver at the
World Championships in Paris, France.
Levi Cadogan
Nineteen year old former St. Michael schoolboy,
Levi Cadogan, had an outstanding year in 2014
on the athletic track. Blessed with fast feet, the
strictly home-grown talent of Cadogan announced
his 2014 form with a silver medal in the Under 20
boys 100 metres (10.25 secs) and a bronze medal in the 200 metres at the Carifta Games held in
Martinique.
He then competed at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene,
Oregon and placed a commendable 4th in the 100 metres in 10.93 seconds.

Levi would redeem himself at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean
Games winning a silver medal in the 100 metres in 10.27 secs, narrowly
beaten on the line. In April 2014, Levi broke with tradition and jumped
straight into the professional ranks running for team Adidas on the athletic circuit.
Shaquile Lavine
Teenager Shaquile Lavine shone brightly as an upand-coming bodybuilder in 2014. After winning
the Mr. Teenager crown at Mr. Bridgetown Novice,
Shaquile became the National Junior Champion
at the 2014 ALLMAX National Championships. He
then went on to the Regional level, where he performed creditably with second (2nd) place in the
Lightweight Division at the Sportworld Classic in Trinidad and Tobago,
third (3rd) place in the Junior Men’s Bodybuilding at the 42nd CAC in St.
Martin and a sixth (6th) place at the Welterweight Division in a strong
field at the 42nd CAC in St. Martin. Shaquile seeks to uphold the tradition
of great Barbadian bodybuilders.
Shamar Rock
Shamar Rock is undoubtedly the best young long
and triple jumper in Barbados. He confirmed this
status during the 2014 Athletic season in Barbados.
He first obliterated the former national record of
7.77 metres set in 1988 by David Caddle, by jumping 7.84 metres in the men’s long jump at the Barbados Nationals. This leap was also a new national
junior record and placed him 5th in the world among junior athletes.
To add to his excellent year, Shamar won gold at the Carifta Games in
Martinique with a leap of 7.56 metres and also took silver in the triple
jump with a leap of 15.39 metres. Further at the CAC Juniors in Mexico,
Shamar jumped 7.74 metres to gain a bronze medal. These outstanding
feats allowed him to gain a scholarship to a Texas university for January
2015.

Chad Williams
A tall left-handed orthodox spinner, 19 year old
Combermere student Chad Williams has emerged
as a force in local and regional youth cricket. At
the regional Under-19, 3 day and one day tournaments, young Williams, the Vice Captain of the
team, took a total of 34 wickets to be the leading
wicket-taker among all bowlers.
He returned to lead his school to the semi-finals of the Barbados Cricket
Association (BCA) Sagicor Shield Knockout final, where they placed runners up to the Isolation Cavaliers in August 2014. He then led them to
victory in the BCA Intermediate Championships against the Barbados Fire
Service in December 2014.
Senior Outstanding Sportsperson
- Female
Shonette Bruce
Tall and imposing, Shonette Bruce literally was
large and in charge of netball’s defensive circle at
international matches during 2014. A product of
the Good Shepherd Primary and the Springer Memorial Secondary Schools, Shonette had an outstanding year in the Barbados Netball Association
(BNA) competitions for the Pine Hill St. Barnabas team in the position of
goalkeeper.
The 6 foot 2 inch young lady however met her sternest challenge at the
2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland. Matched up
against taller opponents, Shonette’s determination and tenacity shone
through and she was voted the tournaments’ Best Defensive Player, having placed first in interceptions, second in rebounds and third in deflections among the 12 teams. She was subsequently voted the BNA’s Most
Valuable Player (MVP) for the year.

Kierre Beckles
The former Lester Vaughan student and now University of Southern Carolina graduate and standout hurdler, Kierre Beckles, showed her immense
promise on the track with a series of improving
results. With a personal best of 12.98 secs at an
outdoor meet in Clermont, Florida in May 2014,
Kierre then went on to reach the final of the 2014
Commonwealth Games, Women’s 100 metre hurdles in July 2014, finishing a commendable 6th place. She then travelled to the CAC Games in
Veracruz, Mexico and won a bronze medal in the Women’s 100 metre
hurdle event clocking 13.47 seconds.
Tanisha Cross
After some promising placings in 2013 as a Bikini
Fitness athlete, Tanisha made the switch to Women’s Fitness in 2014. She dedicated herself to all
the rudiments of Fitness including dance, aerobics
and gymnastics until she had the requisite skills to
then dominate the Women’s Fitness at the 2014
ALLMAX Nutrition National Championships.
Recognising the intensity of Caribbean competition, Tanisha also realised
that there was a need to revamp her routine to raise it to the required
standard of regional competition. The hard work was put in, all the while
nursing a hamstring injury, but such was her intense determination. Her
meticulous preparation allowed her to shine at the CAC Championships
in St. Martin, being rewarded with the overall title in Women’s Fitness.
This achievement allowed her to fulfil her dream of becoming an IFBB
Professional.

Karen Meakins
Fourteen time National Squash, Barbados Open
and newly crowned Caribbean Ladies’ Champion,
Karen Meakins had a very successful year on the
squash courts.
In June 2014, she easily won her record 14th
straight National Ladies title, playing unbeaten and only losing nine (9)
points in the final. In July, Karen travelled to Hong Kong, China and placed
fourth in the World Squash Federation’s World Masters Championships in
the ladies over-40 age group. A month later as the top seed and prohibitive favourite she reached her record eighth (8th) successive Caribbean
Ladies individual final and defeated the #2 seed from Guyana to claim her
second gold medal in the Caribbean Ladies Individual competition.
To cap off another incredible year, in November 2014 Meakins also
claimed her fifth CAC Games medal, a bronze medal with Gavin Cumberbatch, in the mixed doubles competition at the XXII Central American and
Caribbean games that were held in Vera Cruz City and Xalapa in Vera Cruz
state, Mexico. With these five medals (one silver and four bronze), won
over three successive games (2006, 2010 and 2014) Karen now stands
alone in third place on the all-time list of medal winners for Barbados
since the country’s participation at the CAC Games from 1962.
Senior Outstanding Sportsperson
– Male
Kraigg Brathwaite
The year 2014 was a breakout one for young cricketer, Kraigg Brathwaite. The 22 year old, who was
given the responsibility of captaining the Barbados
Senior Team, led by example by scoring over 400
runs and leading his team to the title. It was to get
even better for the slim, gritty West Indies opening

batsman, as he notched his first test century against the New Zealanders
in June 2014. He followed this up with a monumental double century
against Bangladesh in September 2014 becoming only the 10th batsman
to score a Test double century before his 22nd birthday.
To complete a remarkable year, Kraigg stroked his third century of the
year against the much vaunted South African pace attack at Port Elizabeth
in December 2014. In his 6th test match for the year, Kraigg boasted an
impressive average of nearly 78 runs per innings. Certainly a solid foundation to build on for the young West Indies player.
Shane Brathwaite
The tall former St. James Secondary School (now
Fredrick Smith Secondary School) student, Shane
Brathwaite has continued to rise in international
competitions. The former World Youth Champion
(2007) in the Octathlon, Shane continued in 2014
to show that he is a force to be reckoned with. In
early 2014, Shane enjoyed a number of victories and podium finishes on
the European circuit. He won the 110 metres hurdles at the Edmonton
International Track Classic in 13.43 secs. He then placed second in the
hurdle event in 13.49 secs at the XIV European Athletic Festival. Further,
he won at the Grande Premio International in Uberlandia, Brazil in 13.58
secs and the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 13.39 secs, setting a new meet record.
His biggest accomplishment, however, was at the prestigious Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland where he captured a bronze medal in
the men’s 100 metre hurdles in 13.49 secs.
Ramon Dodson
In 2013, Ramon Dodson entered his first Physique
show, the Darcy Beckles Classic, where he whipped
the invitational field. In his first ever Nationals,
the 2014 ALLMAX Nutrition Championships, he
emerged as the National Men’s Physique Cham“Building Strategic Bridges”

pion (Tall Class).
His first taste of regional competition came at the 2014 Sportworld Classic
in Trinidad and Tobago in July, where he was a convincing winner of the
Men’s Physique. In his first CAC Championships in St. Martin, he won the
tall class in the Men’s Physique and the overall pose-down, allowing him
to win an IFBB Pro Card.
Mr. Dodson is the second ever IFBB Pro Men’s Physique athlete produced
by the CAC region.
Patrick Husbands
“Never discount the heart of a champion”. This
phrase can be aptly used to refer to ace champion
jockey Patrick Husbands. After a deflating 2013
season where he broke his leg, requiring surgery
and a 4-month break, Husbands triumphantly returned, although in lingering pain, and rode the
aptly named Major Marvel to the Sandy Lane Gold
Cup in March 2014, to complete the first phase of his comeback. Arguably Barbados’ most successful jockey, Patrick secured the Woodbine
Jockey title for the seventh time with 170 wins at the Woodbine Race
Track in Canada.
Darian King
The year 2014 has been a very good year for Darian King, as he has made a major jump in the world
rankings. Darian has not only done well for himself
but also for Barbados, by leading the Senior Davis
Cup team to Americas Group 1 for the first time in
the country’s 25 years of participating in the event.
Darian did this with an 8-1 Win/Loss record for the year in Davis Cup action. Barbados beat Chile, El Salvador and Mexico to win the 2014 Group
2 title.

Outside on the professional tour, Darian rose up the rankings at a very
fast pace. Darian started the 2014 season ranked at #463 in the world
and in October gained a career high ranking of #302. A feat like this is very
commendable for any professional tennis player. Darian did this by winning the USA Sunrise Florida Open in Weston Florida in January. He then
went on to win two tournaments in Europe later in the summer. Darian
won the Iasi Open in Romania and then went to Holland to win the Rotterdam Open. He was also a singles finalist in the Huatulco Men’s Open in
November 2014 in Mexico.
In the summer of 2014, Darian made a personal best performance by
reaching the quarterfinals of the Binghamton NY, ATP Challenger event.
On his route to the quarterfinals, he beat Ukrainian, IIIya Marchenko, who
was ranked #67 in the world.
Darian King has had a great year both for himself and for the country. He
hopes to continue this form in 2015 and hopefully compete in a Grand
Slam event.
Rico Walcott
In 2014, Rico Walcott, the ever cool horse racing jockey, lit up the Northlands Canada Race
Track with his 4th consecutive jockey title. Walcott compiled 158 wins, 105 seconds and 73
thirds from 482 starts for a total prize money of
CAN $2,387,141. Walcott’s most outstanding
victory was riding Edison to victory in the 85th
running of the Canadian Derby. That victory marked consecutive Derby
wins for Rico, following his 2013 win on Broadway Empire. Rico continues
to work hard without much complaint and looks forward to taste victory
in Breeders Cup events in the future.

Rivaldo Leacock
Rivaldo Leacock, 400 metre specialist, had a commendable year in athletics. The smooth striding 16
year old Lester Vaughan student started his year
well with a Silver medal at the Carifta Games in the
Under-18 Boys’ 400 metre hurdles with a personal
best of 51.37 secs. He then attended the CAC Juniors where he won Gold in the same event with a
time of 51.81 secs. Ever seeking to improve, Rivaldo will definitely be one
of those athletes on whom Barbados will pin its hopes for the future.
