Previous catalogues have been somewhat thematic; this one will broaden our scope, although I’m sure you’ll still notice a Western Americana-centric selection. We’ve purchased two collections from esteemed booksellers; the late Larry Dingman of Dinkytown Books and ex ABAA Arizona dealer Russ Todd. While neither collection represents Larry’s or Russ’ high points, they offer wonderful insight into the mind of a bookseller and why and how they tend to accumulate so many books. Larry loved Classic Westerns in first edition hardbacks and his private collection went to the Library of Congress. We bought many seconds, and thirds...and fourths, fifths, and sixths. Russ was eclectic in his purchasing as he rambled the United States and Mexico in his infamous ‘BookScout’ van. One day Russ sought Mexican Art Books, the next a collection of cap-guns or five cases of a university press title gone remaindered. It will be a while before we wade through the boxes but it sure is fun opening up each box of treasure, or trash. Many of you have visited our store in Moab. In this age of electronic reading devices, our new trade books have seen a shift away from best selling fiction and we’re working harder to fill the niche of a regional bookseller, specializing in books of the southwest. Be that as it may, we have joined the digital (r)evolution and now sell e-books on our website, www.backofbeyondbooks.com. I, however, will go to my grave holding a book: a book with notes in the margins, the tangible smell of a ‘real’ book, the beautiful plates or maps intact, often hand-colored. One with embossed cover art, perhaps gold gilt on the edges or signed by a famous author, with a pithy inscription heralding a special relationship with the reader. Next time you’re in Utah, make it a point to stop in, plus take the time to visit Utah’s other ABAA dealers, Weller Book Works and Ken Sanders Rare Books, both in Salt Lake City. In books to my ears, Andy Nettell 83 N. Green cloth with gilt lettering and design. 212 pages. ‘A notorious big game hunter, houndsman and mountain man of the late American Old West. He remains famous for hunting down large numbers of grizzly, cougars and black bears. A mix between a transcendentalist spirit and an arduos Christian, he is portrayed as an unfathomable Southern wild character. He was a stern adept of simple living and outdoor freedom, he roamed and hunted from Louisiana to Arizona and from Idaho to as far south as Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico and was a subject of American folktales. He guided oiler W. H. McFadden and President Theodore Roosevelt in hunting expeditions, whom he intrigued and wrote about him. He is considered, arguably, to be the most prolific hunter of apex predators in the history of North American hunting and also the last active mountain man of the historical American Southwest. He was not a conservationist but made important contributions of fauna specimens and naturalistic observations to American institutions and museums. He is a contradicting character and his exploits have been consistently exaggerated to folktale proportions, and most records are oral, bona-fide, Americana transcripts.’ (Wikipedia) 15. Limited Edition Everett Ruess Portfolio By RUESS, EVERETT Price: $12,500 In 1985 a set of original Everett Ruess linoleum blocks were discovered in Brother Waldo Ruess’ garden shed in California. This exciting find led the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) to commission a limited edition set of Everett Ruess prints to be printed and sold. A total of 50 sets were printed of 25 plates each. Each print is titled and handnumbered in pencil and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the restorer/ printers. These limited edition sets represent the entire corpus of block prints from original materials created by Everett Ruess. The blocks are now archived at the Utah State Historical Society, and barred from any further reprinting. Of the 25 plates printed, 14 were from Everett’s original blocks and 11 were from new blocks recreated from original proofs of Everett’s. The printers used Reves lightweight ivory printing paper to a deckled edge trim of 9 3/4” x 13” with most of the actual image sizes of 5 x 7 inches. The lino blocks were restored and printed by Thomas Carlyle and Stuart Stenhardt. Carlyle and Stenhardt used a hand-pulled Nolan flat bed proofing press. Each impression required hand re-inking with a mixture of burnt sienna, brown and black oil base ink. The prints in this collection span the last five years of Ruess’ short life, from the age of fifteen to twenty. They portray a variety of natural scenes and chronicle his travels along the California coast, high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and among the redrock canyons of Utah, Arizona and Colorado. 28 www.backofbeyondbooks.com 435.259.5154 47 of the 50 sets were sold within several years of publication. Then as often happens, the remaining few sets were forgotten about, recently ‘rediscovered’ in SUWA’s Salt Lake City office. SUWA has retained one set. Back of Beyond Books is proud to offer the last two sets, numbers 8 and 16. These two sets are in mint condition. As of press time, only set number 16 remains available.
