Meeting the Health Care Challenges 2010 Annual Report PRESIDENT & DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Economic downturn. Recession. Depression. Whatever name you put on it, the dire economic climate in 2010 played havoc on the non-profit community. As unemployment rose, the demand for services began to climb. And agencies, faced with declining revenues, struggled to keep up with demand. munity lack what is now commonly referred to as a “medical home.” Sometimes this causes people to delay treatment until they are much sicker. It can also cause people to use the emergency department for minor medical issues or chronic conditions that are better treated at a doctor’s office where a health care professionals can get to know you over time. In response, The Health Foundation launched a special competitive challenge grant program to encourage non-profits to expand their base of support and further develop support from individuals. So we devoted resources to exploring ways to increase access to a medical home for people who lack health insurance or who are on Medicare and Medicaid and struggle to find a doctor. We supported the efforts of our rural health care centers to seek increased funding to be able to expand care, and receive lower cost prescription medications for patients on a limited budget. Our goal was to encourage organizations that provide for the health and well-being of people in Wilkes County to develop new ways to reach people who care about their programs and services. Because over 75% of charitable gifts in the Unites States comes from individuals, we wanted to see local organizations develop those sources of support. We were also instrumental in receiving grant funding from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to co-locate mental health services within the rural health clinics. This program allows patients the ability to be screened and treated for depression, addiction, and other mental health issues without having to leave their own doctor’s office. We awarded challenge grants to Wilkes Adult Developmental Activity Program, CareNet Counseling of Wilkes, The Child Abuse Prevention Team, The Appalachian Senior Program, The Mobile Expanded School Health bus, Sheltered Aid for Families in Emergencies, and the Ruby Pardue Blackburn Adult Day Care Center. Our goal is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of Wilkes County. The task is daunting, but with your help we are making great strides. While most of us are able to visit our primary care doctor for annual physicals and illnesses that arise, many people in our com- Jim Smoak Heather Murphy, CFRE 2010 President Executive Director -1- 2010 PROGRAMS AND GRANTS Advancements in modern medicine can be expensive, but the benefits to the patients are priceless. The Health Foundation purchased equipment to allow the bilirubin levels of newborn babies to be checked without having to draw blood. The babies don’t feel a thing, and the results are measured right away. This results in shorter hospital stays for babies being treated for jaundice, as well as much happier families. Fifteen years ago, patients who needed kidney dialysis had to travel to Winston-Salem for the life-giving treatment. The two hour roundtrip, coupled with a hourslong treatment session, left patients little time to carry on routine lives. Luckily, today patients are treated in a large, comfortable office at West Park, the medical park developed by The Health Foundation. The original center inside WRMC and paid for by Foundation supporters, outgrew its original location several years ago. The Health Foundation’s purchased four new dialyzers to equip the three new stations and to have an extra on-hand for preventive maintenance and repairs. Previous grants have also provided private televisions and radios so patients can pass the long treatment time more pleasantly. 2010 SCHOLARSHIPS This year marked over $100,000 in scholarships awarded to students entering health care professions who intend to work in Wilkes County, North Carolina. The competitive awards are based on academic achievement, community service, and a dedication to their field of study. Shirley and Alvin Sturdivant Scholarship Fund. Mr. Sturdivant is the founder and first president of The Health Foundation. Mrs. Sturdivant is a retired nurse. Betty Brooks was awarded funds from the general scholarship fund and the Ben Abernethy Scholarship fund. The Ben Abernethy Memorial Scholarship is given to a student attending the Wilkes Community College’s Nursing program. This fund was established by students at WCC who wished to pay condolences to long-time nursing instructor Laura Abernethy, who was Mr. Abernethy’s wife at the time of his death. Scholarships are funded both through the endowed earnings of named scholarships as well as our general funds. Students who maintain academic standing are eligible to renew their awards while seeking their degree. Donors who wish to establish named endowments to provide a permanent legacy may do so with our scholarship program. The Dr. Ray Inscore Scholarship was set up by his family. Dr. Inscore devoted his life to the medical profession and his patients. The R.L. and Doris Melton Family Scholarship Fund was established to benefit nursing students who intend to work in Wilkes. 2010 scholarship recipients were: Yuliya Pankoski received the Betty Winslow Scholarship. The fund was established to honor Betty Winslow who has a strong commitment to both the health care field and a belief in life-long learning. Antonio Rubio-Reyes received an award from the -2- Challenging Times call for Challenging Measures When other funding sources began to cut back support due to lack of resources, The Health Foundation stepped forward to help local health care organizations build stronger capacity to withstand the economic pressure. Each grant required agencies to plan and execute a fundraising plan. Challenge grant recipients for 2010 were: Wilkes ADAP– for teaching job skills to adults with disabilities. Pastoral Care and Counseling Center— for providing mental health care services. Appalachian Senior Program—to benefit the Senior Grandparents Program. The Mobile Expanded School Health Bus—for providing access to medical care for high school students. The Wilkes Sheltered Aid for Families in Emergencies (SAFE)—to update their shelter for battered women and families. The Ruby Pardue Blackburn Adult Day Health Care Center—for providing a safe place for adults of fragile health to spend the day under medical supervision. The Child Abuse Prevention Team—for parenting classes that emphasize safe, healthy ways to discipline children.
