Born in Wynne, Arkansas, Mr. Boggs moved to Memphis at the age of 7. He began working at the age of 14 for Davis Rexall, who Boggs credited for teaching him the basics of service and the true start in the hospitality industry. At this time, he was also a budding musician and during his music career played with Tommy Burk and the Counts, Flash and the Board of Directors, which opened for Paul Revere and the Raiders. He also played for the Box Tops. After working in the corporate restaurant world for some years, he moved back to Memphis and started working at Huey’s as a bartender, then About Menu Events Social AT&T 7:11 PM 3G The Story Behind Huey’s (or Bust) ty of R ec yc led Ta len t© Listen up you young whippersnappers! I’ve been prospecting a long time and never come across a gold mine quite like this one. Huey’s was a golden nugget first discovered in 1970 by a crusty galavanting gold miner named Alan Gary. The name comes from his childhood nickname, Huey. He came up with the idea of creating a bar that was fun and unique, a place where he and all his friends could have a good time. Of course, no good time is had without a a good burger, and he didn’t have to go far to find the best meat in town. It was just down the road, at John Gray Big Star where he had them grind his secret mix daily. That tradition goes on, with a special blend of beef ground daily at Charlie’s Meat Market to make our World Famous Huey Burgers just as special today. In 1976, Thomas Boggs bought into Huey’s and continued to strive for that ideal of the best food, the best service and the best atmosphere. He worked to perfect the special seasoning we put on all our burgers as they are lovingly cooked on the flat grill, never flattened with a spatula so that the juices come out when you bite into them and not a moment sooner. Pr op er Thomas’s love for the hospitality industry began early and he crafted the basics of Huey’s great customer service. He insisted that our employees smile, work really had and always have fun while serving our patrons. Thomas knew that if you loved what you were doing, it would be passed on to the customer and we aim to please every single one of you. With an unwavering commitment to give back to the community. Thomas had a huge impact on Memphis as an active philanthropist and community organizer. The legacy he created lives on as his children run the business, Lauren at the helm; Ashley second in charge, and Samantha using her marketing skills to keep the fun in business. The whole town gets excited at the anticipation of the month, and you can feel the slight disappointment when June arrives. Memphis in May, which first started in 1977, holds many events throughout the month, celebrating the selected country of honor every year. This focus is designed to educated Memphians about various cultures around the world. This year we celebrated the Phillipines, which was evident through celebrations during International Week, the Educational Program, and the many decorations at Barbecue Fest. Though Memphis in May chooses a different country to honor every year, former President Cynthia Ham also says that Memphis in May is designed to give Memphis a sense of self.
