July 2016
From Executive Director Stu Mills:
There is SO much going on here in July!
By the time you read this, the SK8 Nelson Festival will be only a day or two
away. I really hope you don’t miss the amazing MinPin SK8 jam and the
competitions, much less the music, the food & the drinks. It was such a
terrific party last year, and this year promises to be even bigger. Huge
thanks to Devils Backbone for being our Premier Sponsor for the event,
which will also include the dedication of a memorial plaque on the ramp
for dear friend Daniel “MinPin” Rasnake, who we lost last winter.
But don’t put away your calendars just yet…
Mark down Saturday, July 23 for sure – that’s the Central Virginia Blues Society’s “Blues Festival” with an all-star lineup from 4 – 10 PM. A perfect way to spend a sultry Saturday evening
under the stars!

Then save the date on Tuesday, July 26th – as we partner with the Wintergreen Performing Arts News, Treasure Chest
Summer Music Festival folks to host “No Plaid Required,” an evening of bagpipe & drum music Sales
featuring Albemarle Pipes & Drums. A highland fling served with a side of single malt, thanks

to sponsor Virginia Distillery! Admission is free (donations to support WPA & RVCC gratefully
accepted), and there’ll be a cash bar to quench your thirst.
And then on July 30th, finish out your month at the Rock with our first “Beach Blast” – a wild
day of partying and celebrating the Rock and the Nelson County Community Fund, which helps
to fund so many non-profits in the County. Read about it more inside, and come take a shot
at dunking Yours Truly in the “dunk tank” if you think you have the arm…I kinda doubt there’s
anyone man (or woman) enough to get me wet…
Thanks so much for your support, guys & gals!

Saturday, July 2: 2nd Annual SK8 Nelson Festival
Late in 2014, our insurance company handed us a hard choice: either get rid of the skate
park, or lose your insurance. After months of searching, we were able to find an insurance
provider that would cover the skate park--to the tune of an additional $4000 per year. As it
is Nelson County's only skate park, we feel it is worth keeping--but we need help to shoulder this staggering increase in our insurance premium. And so was born the SK8 Nelson
Festival!

News from the Rockfish River Gallery
Come and see all the changes and additions at the Rockfish River Gallery! The expansion is about 90%
complete: soon the extended gallery will be complete, with increased display areas for crafts and artwork.
New Art: The Gallery has added more artists and artisans’ work, including a new selection of oil paintings.
Look for a “Quilt Art” exhibit in mid-July, featuring quilts but small enough to frame.
New Books: Three children’s books are now available at the Gallery, as well as the newly-released “For the
Love of the Land.” This is the well written and very well-researched book about the history and rise of the
Wintergreen Community. This book covers much of Nelson County’s history, from the time of Jefferson to
the present. 100% of the proceeds for the sale of “For the Love of the Land” go to the Nature Foundation
of Wintergreen, the folks who spearheaded the project.
New Music: The Gallery seeks CDs by musicians and bands from Nelson County (and contiguous counties).
If you have produced a CD and would like to showcase and sell your work at the Gallery, please contact
Kathy.
First Saturdays! The Gallery will offer a $75.00 gift certificate on July 2nd to the 10th customer to purchase an item, and will continue the offer on every First Saturday.
The Rockfish River Gallery is open Wednesdays—Saturdays 10am—4pm, and Sundays 12—4pm.

Michelle Burkett, LMT, Joins the New Health Consultant Studio
The Rockfish Valley Community Center welcomes Energy Therapist Michelle Burkett, LMT. Michelle has joined the New
Health Consultant Studio and is now accepting clients.
Energy Therapy
The goal of this unique way of approaching therapeutic bodywork is to quiet the mind, heal the soul, and refresh the
spirit. It allows you to simply be, so that your journey becomes clearer with the inner peace. Space is provided for you
to process aspects of your life that often are ignored amid daily routines. We are not made of muscle alone, therefore, this approach takes into consideration the connection between your mind, body, and spirit, working with the chakras and
energy pathways within the body.
Michelle Burkett has been studying and practicing Earth centered ceremony and spirituality inspired by the indigenous peoples of
America since 2009. Around this time, she also began learning energy healing, a gentle laying-on of hands that allows a person
to return to a state of wholeness and health: mind, body and spirit. She works intuitively with a blended style of Reiki, Quantum
Touch, and Earth based healing traditions. In 2012, she attended the Costa Rica School of Massage Therapy. Upon return to
Pennsylvania, she acquired her license and membership to the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA). She became Nationally Certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). With experience at
Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Spa, The Spa at Boars Head Inn, and Wintergreen Resort Spa, she provides quality treatment with
energy therapy.
