Orange County is easily reached by major
highways. The New York State Thruway
(Interstate 87) is the major route from New
York City and Albany. Interstate 84 takes
visitors from Pennsylvania through Orange
County to the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
Route 17 (soon to be Interstate 86) starts at
the Thruway and proceeds northwest through
the county.

The longest running American ferry service was
started in Newburgh in 1743 and ran until 1963.
It recently started again, taking passengers from
the Newburgh Waterfront to Beacon, just over a
mile away.
Route 218 that winds around the face of Storm King Mountain is the only road in
New York State that has round-the-clock supervision to monitor rock slides that
occur from the sheer granite side that drops into the Hudson River. When it was
built in 1922, it was known as the “Most Expensive Road in the World” after 7 years
of blasting the side of the mountain. It is also a scenic highway on the National
Register of Historic Places, offering breathtaking views of the Hudson Highlands.
History
& Culture
When Henry Hudson sailed his ship “Half Moon”
up the Hudson River and into Newburgh Bay in
1609, he was the first in a long list of remarkable
travelers to Orange County. These influential
women and men determined the early history
and culture of America. Travel back through time
to the 1700s. It’s the end of the Revolutionary
War and George Washington establishes his
Headquarters at a stone fortress in Newburgh,
high above the majestic Hudson. Explore a place
so rich in history, it’s America’s first Registered
National Historic Landmark. Witness firsthand
our battle re-enactments, fabulous faires and
one-of-a-kind festivals.

Frank Sinatra also performed
there.
Willie “The Lion” Smith, a colorful fixture on the
jazz scene, was born in Goshen in 1897. He became
world-famous as one of the developers and expert
practitioners of the Harlem “stride” piano school.
He was mentor to Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and
Artie Shaw, among others.

The Verplanck Room at the Metropolitan Museum of
Art was constructed from the 18th century Colden
Mansion in Montgomery. The room contains pine
paneling, doors, window jams, fireplace and
floorboards from the home. It was built in 1767, the
home of Samuel and Judith Crommelin Verplanck.

At this site, Washington created and awarded
the original purple heart badge. In 1850, the

America’s smallest forest has only one
tree, an eastern cottonwood that’s 302
years old. The Balmville Tree outside
of Newburgh is on the National
Register of Historic Places as well as
the New York State Register.
The nation’s most famous lexicographer, Noah Webster, was schoolmaster at the
Farmer’s Hall Academy (now Goshen Town Hall) in 1782. Several signers of the
Declaration of Independence sent their children to this school. Because the country
was at war, schoolbooks were scarce, so Webster worked on a series of textbooks that
would give children a uniquely American education. The work changed his life and
determined the course of his career.

Port Jervis was the first stop on the “Old
Mine Road,” known as the first 100-mile
road in America. Tradition says the road
was build by Dutch settlers who sought
mines of gold and copper along the
Delaware River Highlands.
The first European settlement within the limits of the present Orange County was
established c. 1685 when Scottish immigrant Col. Patrick MacGregorie created a trading
post at the site along the Hudson River known as Plum Point. The trading post
continuously operated until 1720. Currently, the Orange County Parks Department
manages the Kowawese Unique Area at this beautiful location. Kowawese (Kow-a-way-say)
meant “place of small pines” to the Native Americans of the Lenape Nation who once lived
here.

Appalachian Trail
Spanning from the New Jersey border to the
Hudson River (about 35 miles), the trail was
founded here in 1923. A lengthy portion
offers scenic views of Greenwood Lake. It
also winds its way through the Bear Mountain
Wildlife Center, the most popular section of
the entire trail.

Plum Point - (Kowawese Unique Area) - a new State/County/Town park opened in
the fall of 1996, located directly on the shore of the Hudson River. From this
vantage, exquisite views of the Newburgh Bay to the North and Cornwall Bay to
the South can be seen. Plum Point was an almost always occupied site from prehistoric man to the present.

Port Jervis was a port on the Delaware
and Hudson Canal and is also known
as the "River City." The town is
named in honor of John B. Jervis, the
chief engineer on the canal.
The 30-year battle to preserve Storm King
Mountain became the basis for United
States environmental law and brought
national attention to the highest peak on
the west bank of the Hudson Highlands.
Maybrook's development as a village
owes much to the railroads, and in 1910
the largest rail hub in the East was built

Goshen was the site of the hanging of the famous outlaw Claudius Smith, a British
Loyalist who - along with the Mohawk Indian Chief Joseph Brandt - raided the
countryside surrounding Goshen during the Revolutionary War. He and Joseph Brandt
are said to have buried their many stolen treasures in the hills surrounding Goshen,
and that Claudius is himself buried somewhere on the grounds of the old Presbyterian
Church.
