It’s rabbit season. Duck season. Rabbit season. Duck season. Rabbit season. Duck season. Rabbit season. Open house season? Equipment Journal has been very busy and social since last issue. Read the coverage of the open houses at MacLean Engineering, Bobcat of Parry Sound, Cooper Rentals, Tallman Truck Centre, Economy Auction, and Cummins. And, based on how well attended these events were, I would say that the three words that bring people together isn’t “I love you”, it’s “Bar-B-Q”. Thank you to all those companies for their hospitality. We also participated in the Canadian Association of Equipment Dealers (CAED)Ontario branch annual golf tournament, which raises money t hat goes towards efforts of promoting careers in the heavy equipment industry to young people. The teams on which we played didn’t win, but we had a lot of fun. Congratulations to all the winners at the event. I came across an article showing a very useful application of a rather mundane technolog y. The technology—a camera and a screen. The application—they were mounted to an OTR (over the road) truck and trailer. The screen is mounted to the rear of the trailer. The camera is mounted to the front of the truck. This means that what the camera records can be seen by drivers behind the truck in real time, so the driver This Issues behind the truck can see if it is safe to pass, before changing lanes, seriously decreasing risk of road accidents related to overtaking trucks. Brilliant. This simple solut ion is provided by Samsung. The company is running a pilot test in Argentina with these Samsung Safety Trucks. L1H 6N5 E: psc@powerscreencanada.com www.powerscreencanada.com July 6, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com CAWIC Celebrates 10 Years of Support & Success On May 13, CAWIC organized an intimate gathering at the Paramount Conference and Event Venue in honour of their 10-year anniversary. They celebrated in style with a traditional banquet hall-style set up. Guests were treated to cocktails and appetizers. Michael Atkinson, President of the Canadian Construction Association (CCA), delivered the keynote speech of the evening. “We thought it would be kind of neat to do a bit of crystal ball gazing tonight, (talk about) where the industry is going, and the trends that we are seeing,” said Atkinson. Atkinson pointed out that as a national association, the CCA has had the privilege and opportunity to go across the country and talk to industry practitioners in all corners and across sectors. In doing so, the CCA has been able to “cobble together a bit of a road map” as to where the industry is going. “O ne of m y m e s s a g e s tonight is going to be about how important groups like (CAWIC) are going to be, and even more so, as the industry continues, because of the great need we have for people. Not just at the trade level, not just at the site level, but also at the managerial and professional levels,” said Atkinson. According to the CC A President, there has been a fairly significant increase in women in the industry, but not right across the board. In his opinion, the biggest need for people is in the trades. “We have seen growth in the supervisor, managerial and occupational positions with no question. But there’s more that could be done,” said Atkinson. As the cocktail hour transitioned into the dinner portion of the evening, CAWIC President Tammy Evans took the stage to speak about the association’s ten-year involvement in supporting women in construction and how far the industry has come. Both Evans and Atkinson had messages that echoed each other: change needs to happen in order for the industry to grow and compete economically. “We started as a small group of 11 women, those were the founding members of CAWIC, and it’s now grown to over 200 members,” said Evans. “CAWIC has grown in its initiatives over the past 10 years. Under our core pillars of Leadership, Mentorship, Membership, and Partnership, we have made great strides in becoming a leading resource and support for women in the Canadian construction industry through our various program areas and our social media outreach, which includes an extensive reference link list, regular skilled trades profiling and an industry awareness campaign,” says Evans. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of organizations like CAWIC, the construction industry is still viewed as a “man’s domain” by most, and continues to be heavily dominated by males. While women represent 47.3% of the overall Canadian labour force, they hold just 11.8% of construction jobs. “With respect to the construction industry, society’s A3 | EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Jade Equipment Company Ltd. has an immediate opening for a Construction Equipment Mechanic at our Branch location in Edmonton, Alberta. Two Nu-Air versions are available for backhoes. The Dirt Terrain (DT) tire excels in off-road applications where aggressive traction and high stability are important. Their deep t read lugs ensure a solid grip on sand, rocks or deep mud. The All Terrain (AT) tire is a good option for mixed-purpose vehicles. The zigzag tread pattern provides a smoother ride with less wear on asphalt, concrete, and other hard surfaces, yet still delivers good traction when off road. McLaren already manufactured backhoe front tires, and their latest offerings cover the larger rear tires. Backhoes can now be completely fitted with the Nu-Air series tires, which use three layers of unique rubber compounds and multiple shock-absorbing relief holes to create a smooth ride and unrivaled durability. Flat-proof technology eliminates the need for tire protection, while the extra weight of the tires lowers the backhoe’s center of gravity and provides crucial stability on harsh terrain. This product integrates the strength of a solid tire with the smooth, cushioned ride of a pneumatic tire. Featuring a lower cost per hour, the solid cushion Nu-Air tire series has become widely known as the economically smart alternative to foam-filled or conventional pneumatic tires. “McLaren’s solid cushion tires have become hugely popular among owners and operators of skid-steer loaders, telehandlers, wheel loaders and forklifts, so it was only natural to add backhoe tires in the mix,” said George Zafirov, Marketing Manager for McLaren Industries. www.colvoy.ca email: sales@colvoy.ca 1.855.449.5858 1240 Colborne St. W., R.R. 4, Brantford, ON Industrial Mowers, Boom Mowers and Mower Parts See Colvoy for all your wheel loader mowing & brushing needs. This is the company’s second new location in the last 12 months; late last year, Cooper Equipment Rentals purchased Albion Equipment, based out of Bolton, Ontario. Sit uated on t wo acres, the new 15,000-square-foot facility features a showroom, offices, a warehouse, three ser v ice bays, and a stateof-t he-a r t f u l ly enclosed environmental wash system. All the water stays within the system, and never enters the environment. W hen a machine gets washed, the water is col lec ted i nto a trough then goes into a tank treatment system; this breaks down oils and such, leaving clean water for the next wash. “The event went very well, and we are pleased to serve our neighbours f rom our new state-of-the-art Burlington location,” says Pete Rongits, Branch Manager, Jade Equipment Company Ltd. is pleased to announce our new appointment as the Easi-Pour® dealer in Alberta and Ontario. However, the actual value to business could be compromised if the communication system doesn’t fit with the application. Remote monitoring solutions that include satellite as a communication mode provide the real-time events and statistics on equipment usage and location that are vital to improving profitability. That said, it still might be hard to envision how a satellite or satellite/cellular remote monitoring telematics system will provide a favorable return on investment. The following five reasons will help clarify the value of integrating satellite communications into the tracking of heavy equipment puts additional wear and tear on the asset that will likely in remote areas. increase maintenance costs. 1.EQUIPMENT SECURITY With satellite or dual-mode Heavy equipment theft is communications, the central a big problem. This can lead to accelerated deterioration and declining longevity of an asset. According to IBISWorld, prices for construction machinery have risen at an estimated annualized rate of 3.4%. By accurately tracking the usage of equipment – even those located in the most remote areas – it is easier to spread usage across every piece of equipment. By extending the lifetime of assets, capital investments can be reduced or deferred. 5.LOWER FUEL & OTHER OPERATING COSTS Ongoing costs ca n add up so it is important to save wherever possible. C O M Introducing: CARBITLINK™ & TAPERLOCK™ Edmonton, AB. 1-877-452-1430 When it comes to the jobs no one wants to take, Sean Turpin, President of Rysen Bobcat Services, isn’t afraid of a challenge. That’s because he’s confident his guys, equipped w it h Hitach i excavators, will get the job done. Rysen started business in late 1999 with one skid steer. Fifteen years later, Turpin has grown the St. Albert, Alberta-based company, which specializes in earthworks and grading, to more than 30 employees. He’s also transformed into a Hitachi fan along the way. “I chose Hitachi after I talked with some of my friends in the industry, and they said Hitachi is the way to go,” he said. “The excavators are reliable, smooth, and just awesome.” Rysen now has a fleet of five ZX210LC-5 Excavators ready to tackle a variety of jobs. And there’s been no buyer’s remorse for Turpin when it comes to his Hitachi fleet. “The guys at Wajax, my Hitachi dealer, can break down the cost per hour of what it takes for me to run a unit,” he said. “And it’s unbelievable how low the cost is. The numbers say it all.” With 30 years of operator experience, Rysen employee Derrick Brooks, or “Brooksie” as the guys call him, also encouraged Turpin to purchase Hitachi excavators. “I’ve operated every brand of excavator,” Brooksie said. “Hitachi is quick and powerful; the 210 has all the power I need. BUYING AND SELLING USED CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT SINCE 1971 One of the company’s long-term undertakings is working on the Anthony Henday Drive expansion, which includes over 40 kilometres (25 miles) of new highway and 47 bridge structures. It’s really comfortable, which makes operators happy and more productive.” And Turpin makes sure he’s got the right guys in the cab by turning to veterans, like Brooksie, to help train new operators. “We really pride ourselves on training the next generation,” Turpin said. “A lot of our operators are under 30. For short-term jobs, the Hitachi excavators’ mobility and versatility allow Rysen to be nimble with its operations. “We can put the 210s on a trailer, complete a job, load them up at the end of the day and be on to the next thing,” Turpin said. “It definitely gives us an advantage.” Authorized exclusive dealer for 647-235-0807 450-745-0303 info@conderoc.com CRUSHING SCREENING MINING QUARRYING PAVING RECYCLING EQUIPMENT www.conderoc.com A18 | July 6, 2015 $149,000 2007 JD 844J 13811 HRS 29.5R25YOK55%, RBIT ARTIC,SPAR $95,000 2003 JD 824J 17754 HRS HYD FR DIFF LOCK, 29.5X25 TIRES,RC,BCKT W TEETH $255,000 2013 JD 644K 3503 HRS 4.25YD GP BKT,REV FAN,100AMP www.equipmentjournal.com $170,000 2013 JD 544K 1833 HRS 4WD LOADER $120,000 2005 JD 624J 4355 HRS PIN ON BKT, RC, AC, HEAT $145,000 2009 JD 544K 3931 HRS CAB,AC,CLOTH SEAT AIR SUSP,ZBAR LINKAGE 2007 CAT 140H TALL CAB, BAREBACK 7827 HRS $145,000 2008 CAT 140M SNOW WING 8510 HRS $178,000 2009 CAT 140M LOW CAB, RIPPER 5707 HRS $189,000 2008 CAT 140M AWD 1 WAY PLOW,WING,X MUNIPAL 7554 HRS $185,000 2003 CAT 160H CAB, AC, WING 12400 HRS $115,000 2008 CAT 160M BAREBACK, FENDERS 5860 HRS $189,000 2008 CAT 160M BAREBACK, AIR RIDE,DIFF LOCK 7804 HRS $169,000 1986 CHAMP 740 CAB & HEATER 6994 HRS $35,000 2002 JD 770CH TALL CAB,AC,S.WING,14'MD,2'EX 7989 HRS $80,000 2002 JD 770CH TALL CAB, 2' EXTENSION 10165 HRS $75,000 2006 JD 770D TALL CAB,14'MLDBD,2'EXT,S WG 13259 HRS $95,000 2007 JD 770D LOW CAB, BAREBACK 9617 HRS $120,000 2010 JD 770G 2FT EXT,SNOPLUS TIRES,BAREBACK 4305 HRS $178,000 2010 JD 770G LOW CAB, BAREBACK 6260 HRS $189,000 2010 JD 770G LOW CAB, BAREBACK 6875 HRS $189,000 2011 JD 770G GOOD CONDITION,RUNS GOOD 4645 HRS $195,000 2011 JD 770G BAREBACK, STANDARD CONTROLS 4773 HRS $179,000 2011 JD 770G MOTOR GRADER 4922 HRS $205,000 2011 JD 770G C/W LOW CAB,BARE BACK,WTY 5015 HRS $199,000 2011 JD 770G LOW CAB, BAREBACK, STD CTRLS 2602 HRS $179,000 2010 JD 770GP GP,BAREBACK,14'+2'EXT,F/R FDR 5348 HRS $199,000 2007 JD 772D SNOW WING 12950 HRS $85,000 2008 JD 772D C/W SNO PLUS,SNOW WING,BAREBACK 11953 HRS $89,000 2009 JD 772D BAREBACK, S.WING,BALANCE WTY 6176 HRS $185,000 2009 JD 772G LOW CAN W/ RIPPER 4741 HRS $245,000 2010 JD 772G 6WD, AUTOSHIFT 4976 HRS $245,000 2011 JD 772G BES WING 6167 HRS $228,000 2007 JD 870D T CAB,16' MDBD,SLIP CLUTCH,REBLT TRANS 7058 HRS $130,000 $103,000 2010 JD 624K 12161 HRS TL CRRIER,AC,HIVIS QC,RVRS FAN;F&R FNDRS,RC $115,000 2009 JD 444K 5928 HRS 20.5R 25 TIRES,FENDERS,PIN ON $185,000 2012 JD 624K 4876 HRS QA,BKT,3F $120,000 2009 JD 444K 4494 HRS 20.5R 25 TIRES,FENDERS,PIN ON $190,000 2012 JD 624K 1944 HRS ZBAR,3.5 YD PIN-ON, 2 FUNC $195,000 2010 JD 744K 5250 HRS CAB,AIR,GP BKT W/ EDGE 2008 JD 870D LOW CAB, S.WING, FENDERS 8174 HRS $139,000 2008 JD 870D L.CAB,S WING,PUSHBLOCK 7487 HRS $139,000 2008 JD 870D LOW CAB, CRAIG WING 7199 HRS $139,000 2008 JD 870D SHORT CAB,F&R FDRS,14" MLDBRD 2' EXT 7446 HRS $139,000 2009 JD 870G B.BACK, 2' EXT, F&R FENDERS 7108 HRS $215,000 2010 JD 870G B.BACK,LW CB,HT/AC,TP BT RR WPR,F&R FNDRS 5201 HRS $189,000 2010 JD 870G WING,SNO TIRES,BLADE IMPACT 7588 HRS $189,000 2010 JD 870G C/W MASTLESS WING, RIPPER 8355 HRS $180,000 2010 JD 870GP LOW CAB, BAREBACK, PTH WTY 5852 HRS $199,000 2011 JD 870GP GP, RIPPER 4596 HRS $239,000 2013 JD 870GP BAREBACK, 2' EXT, PTH WTY 2470 HRS $289,000 2006 JD 872D C/W RIPPER & PUSHBLOCK 9067 HRS $180,000 2007 JD 872D CLEAN,RIPPER,WING.LIFT GROUP 9935 HRS $130,000 2009 JD 872G LOW CAB, RIPPER,14+2 MLDBRD, 7585 HRS $209,000 2010 JD 872G 2 FT EXT,F FNDRS,NW SNO+ ALL AROUND 5800 HRS $215,000 2010 JD 872G 7+7 CTRL VLV,AUTO SHIFT TRANS 6593 HRS $225,000 2009 JD 872GP TIRES 50% 5152 HRS $275,000 2010 JD 872GP C/W WING,HYD ANGLE BLADE,V-PL 6053 HRS $239,000 2008 VOLVO G940 BAREBACK, 2' EXT, LOW CAB 6900 HRS $105,000 2010 VOLVO G960 SNOW WING 4551 HRS $142,000 2011 VOLVO G960 BAREBACK 3880 HRS $155,000 2011 VOLVO G960 S.WING, 2' EXT, FENDERS 4433 HRS $149,000 2011 VOLVO G960 BAREBACK 3800 HRS $155,000 2011 VOLVO G960 LOW CAB, 2 FT EXT, FENDERS 4291 HRS $149,000 2012 VOLVO G960B C/W WELDCO MASTED WING,17.5 3832 HRS $169,000 2012 VOLVO G960B 14'+2', 17.5R25,11 SPD TRANS 5072 HRS $159,000 Call Brandt Finance at 1-855-711-4545 to find out more about our customized, flexible financing options. We are working to change this social perception,” says Evans. CAWIC has proven to have strong and dedicated members. They enjoy great community support for their goal of increasing the number of female leaders in the skilled trades. Having made their mark in the industry over the past ten years and with no signs of slowing down, Evans has high hopes for the next 10 years and beyond. R e c e n t l y , C AW I C w a s awarded a federal grant in the amount of $249,900 through Status of Women Canada to put towards their latest initiative, the Level Best Women’s Advancement Project. This is a 36 month national research and action plan project with the intention of increasing the number of women entering the industry, prolonging their careers, and boosting female promotion into leadership roles. Membership in CAWIC is available to any individual female, any corporate entity that supports women in construction, female students, and individuals not in the construction industry, but whose activities indirectly support the goals and objectives of CAWIC. The Canadian Association for Women in Construction (CAW IC) was founded in 1982 as the Toronto chapter of the U.S.-based National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC). In 2005, CAWIC parted ways with NAWIC to pursue an independent Canadian association. Fast forward 10 years and what started as a few women, eleven to be exact, has flourished into a full-fledged organization with over 200 members. July 6, 2015 | A19 CREIGHTON ROCK DRILL LTD. Some machines, including dozers, excavators, wheel loaders, skid steers, and trucks, are multipurpose and can be used across a variety of projects. However, not every piece of equipment should be part of your core fleet. Evaluate the size and mix of your fleet so that specialized pieces and infrequently-used equipment don’t sit idle for long periods of time, costing precious time and money to maintain while they’re not generating revenue on your behalf. If your business project pipeline doesn’t include a use for specialized machines in the near future, why not sell them as surplus and turn idle equipment into cash that can be used for business purposes now? If it’s needed later, equipment can always be rented or purchased used at auction. Equipment ow ners of ten tend to hold on to equipment too long and miss the best window to dispose of their assets, which reduces resale value and adds maintenance expense. Regularly review your inventory with a critical 2.REDUCE MAINTENANCE eye. Now may be the right time COSTS to sell, and here’s why: No one needs an unexpected breakdown mid-project. Use the proceeds to benefit your business now by strengthening this season’s balance sheet or reinvesting in machines that will be a better fit for your current project pipeline. If you’re considering applying for bank loans or bonding, you’ll need plenty of cash on hand to demonstrate that your business is a safe credit risk and is flexible in response to a changing marketplace. 4.TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GLOBAL MARKET Thanks to improved technology and online marketplaces, equipment sellers are not limited to local buyers, as they were in decades past. Canadian sellers can take advantage of stronger currencies in cross-border sales. Online marketplaces that partner with transportation and customs support can make it easy and efficient to sell and buy equipment across borders. The option to easily market your equipment to international buyers can also help in disposing of seasonal equipment. It may be off-season for that machine in your local area, but it’s probably in-season in another global market. T houg h a l l buyers a re interested in well-maintained, low-hour, and late-model equipment, for international sales, don’t discount the idea of offloading older, heavily-used or damaged machines. Many value-conscious buyers seek out older equipment, particularly in developing countries, and either make the repairs themselves or use the item for parts. Often, equipment that may not meet regulatory requirements in Canada yet can still be in high demand from buyers in developing countries. Review your equipment inventory and all upcoming projects; it may be time to look at disposal options that can help you get the best value for your surplus assets quickly and efficiently. Consider tradeins or selling at a local auction, or better yet, turn to an online marketplace to take advantage of their buyers from around the world who may have a significant exchange rate advantage, and are looking to purchase now. An online marketplace also gives you the added benefit of not paying to transport items to auction. Selling idle equipment in favour of maintaining a strong core stable of regularly-used equipment can improve your business’s bottom line and increase efficiencies in storage and maintenance. Today’s global, connected marketplace for surplus equipment makes selling and buying equipment easier than ever for your organization. Based out of the Niagara Region, the Tender Wishes Foundation seeks out and grants wishes to children in the Niagara Region who suffer from a potentially life-threatening illness. Help A Child Smile was founded in 1987 from the need to bring some joy into the lives of children with cancer. July 6, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com A21 | MacLean Engineering Celebrates Municipal Vehicle Success with Open House Ma c L e a n Eng i n e e r i ng hosted an open house on June 18 at the company’s Owen Sound location. The company organized the customer appreciation event so that attendees could demo the company’s municipal vehicles (the MV2 and MV4), explore MV attachments, meet with the product experts behind the MV line, and experience a guided tour of the company’s manufacturing facility there. MacLean Engineering, who has been designing, engineering, and manufacturing equipment solutions for the mining industry for 40 years, first brought their engineering and manufacturing experience to design the MV in 2006. The company decided to diversify its product offering, so that it will never have to be tied to a single business cycle. “When things are tough in mining, as they are today, a company serving the mining industry would have to let go of employees, and it can be hard to recoup that skilled labour, especially in northern Ontario, where these machines are manufactured,” explains Scott Johnston, Technical Sales and Product Development Manufacturer, MacLean Engineering. The company spent two years talking to end-users and testing their prototypes before releasing their first MV (municipal vehicle) in January 2008. At the time, the municipal vehicle market was already a mature and saturated market. Eventually, people accepted the new entry, and it came to be known as the red tractor. In 2010, the company launched the MV2, and in 2014, the company launched the MV4 at the APWA (American Public Works Association) Congress and Exhibition. The MacLean MV gained in popularity. Now, the company has more than 200 machines in the field, and are the number two manufacturer of municipal vehicles by sales volume. Headquartered in Collingwood, Ontario, and with facilities in Barrie, Owen Sound, and Sudbury, MacLean Engineering has more than 400 dedicated team members worldwide. 2004 BEUTHLING VIBRATORY ROLLER, (ASPHALT), MODEL B-305, 2.5 TON FINISH ROLLER, SINGLE VIBRATORY DRUM, NEEDS MINOR REPAIRS AND PAINT. 1999 BOMAG VIBRATORY ROLLER, MODEL BW 120 AD-3, 4323 HRS, FAIR TO GOOD CONDITION, FRONT DRUM SEAL LEAKING, ROPS USED DAILY, SERV RECS AVAILABLE. 2006 BOMAG VIBRATORY ROLLER, BW124DH-3 S/N 901581271156, 3862 HOURS EXCELLENT CONDITION. 2000 HAMM VIBRATORY ROLLER, MODEL HD-100, GOOD COND, 10-12 TON ROLLER, DBL DRUM VIBRATORY, ROPS, 66” DRUM WIDTH, SERV. These days, the limestone business is much different. The luxury of time to extract and fabricate is gone. The most successful firms need talented employees and productive, durable heavy equipment to meet demanding schedules a nd del iver h ig h-qua l it y products. “Everyone looks for delivery speed,” says Tom Stobbe, owner (with his sister Linda) of Ledgerock Ltd., one of the most complete quarrying and fabricating firms in North America. “We have a hard time getting any kind of a long lead time. This applies more toward our dealer network side of the business, but is part of our architectural-driven custom work as well.” L o c at e d on t he Br uc e Peninsula in southwestern Ontario, the company owns and operates three quarries that yield some of the world’s most spectacular limestone. Tom’s father, Harold, a homebuilder, purchased the land in the 1960s where the Owen Sound quarry is located. “He had a friend who owned a quarry, so when home construction slowed down, he started buying land,” Stobbe says. “Good property was used for farming, but the rest was too rocky to grow anything, so it was not very valuable. What many people did not realize was that a good band of stone ran through the area.” After Owen Sound (population 20,700), the company added quarries near Wiarton in 1965 and Hope Bay in 2002. The three of them total more than 1,000 acres. “We have plenty of product left in the ground,” notes Stobbe, who joined the company in 1982. The Doosan LD250 TC’s parallel lift arms provide the operator with good visibility. DIFFERENCE-MAKING WHEEL LOADER A quarr y is made up of multiple layers of stone. Some are thin (4-to-6-inches thick) others are much thicker (up to 36 inches (914 mm)). Each layer has a unique texture and colour to it. Ledgerock is the leading producer of Eramosa marble/limestone, Algonquin limestone, Hope Bay limestone, and Mara limestone (see sidebar on B13). The stone is removed with diamond belt saws that cut it into cubes. The cubes are removed using a Doosan wheel loader with a pallet fork attachment, and then either transported to the fabrication building (in the case of the Owen Sound quarry) or loaded onto trucks (at the Wiarton and Hope Bay quarries) for delivery to fabrication. Removing and carr ying the cubes of limestone has become more efficient since the company purchased a Doosan DL250TC-3 wheel loader. The “TC” stands for tool carrier and features a parallel-lift arm; this wheel loader configuration is designed for lift and carry applications. The 129-kW (172hp) machine weighs 14,296 kilograms (31,769 pounds) and has a dump height of 2.75 metres (9 feet). “The wheel loader’s parallel lift arms provide the operator with excellent visibility; you can actually see what the tips of the pallet forks are doing,” Stobbe says. “Picture a wall four-to-five-feet thick with multiple layers that might be a foot apart. To remove the cubes, you need to exert a little force to break them apart, so proper positioning of the forks is critical. If you cannot see the tips of the forks, it makes it very difficult. “The machine keeps the pallet forks and the material level, which means there is one less function the operator has to perform. It is very helpful.” A long w it h t he pa r a llel-lift-arm design, the Doosan wheel loader’s limited-slip differential helps ensure a Cubes of rock are removed using a Doosan DL250TC-3 with a pallet fork attachment, and then transported to be fabricated. Tom Stobbe, owner of Ledgerock Ltd. stands in front of his new Doosan LD250TC-3. steady operation on uneven terrain. In fact, says Stobbe, “the ground from the quarry to the fabrication building is rough, with a lot of sharp stones. The DL250TC-3 does a nice job of keeping the load level.” A not her popular wheel loader feature is the ability for the operator to change attachments quick ly and easily using the hydraulic quick coupler. “We change between pallet forks and buckets frequently,” Stobbe explains. “After the blocks are removed with the forks, there is some cleanup required because they all do not come out as a solid piece. A cube that is cut to size may fall apart if it is fractured. So, being able to efficiently switch to the bucket for picking up the broken pieces is important.” B13 July 6, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com B3 | TELSMITH. GLOBAL PROCESSING SOLUTIONS. The 621F and 721F wheel loaders produce 121 a nd 133 net kW (162 and 179 hp), respectively. Both machines are also available with XT (tool carrier) or XR (extended reach) linkage and specialty configurations for even greater versatility and productivity. With SCR, these machines achieve lower temperatures in the engine exhaust system while optimizing combustion to achieve greater fuel economy and peak horsepower. The SCR design on the 621F and 721F also contributes to machine uptime by eliminating the need for manual diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration and the associated downtime that occurs with wheel loaders that use cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) technology. SCR also results in extended time between service intervals as lower ambient temperatures result in slower degradation of lubricating oil. Additional fuel savings can be achieved with a standard engine shutdown feature found on each model that allows the operator to limit engine idle time. The powerful JCB 457 is the first machine to show off the completely new cab structure, engine cover, and rear counterweight design, all of which contribute to improved visibility, lower noise levels, increased internal space, and an enhanced working environment for the operator. In addition, the 457 is the first large JCB wheel loader to meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards, with the adoption of a powerful MTU diesel engine that is perfectly matched to the machine’s operating duties. The engine contributes to a massive fuel savings of around 16% compared to the previous model. As with other JCB machines, the engine in the 457 meets Tier 4 Final without the need for a costly diesel particulate filter (DPF), relying on an efficient combustion process, with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system and an exhaust fluid additive to meet the regulations. NEW JCB COMMANDPLUS CAB The 457 is the first machine from JCB to utilize the company’s next generation JCB CommandPlus cab. This totally new ROPS structure has A pillars that have been moved out to the same width as the rear of the cab, providing a larger interior with a panoramic front windscreen. Plenty of new technology is evident throughout the plant. Ten CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines produce a wide variety of stone shapes and sizes. Five of the units are set up as milling centers, where a computer-aided design turns out a computer-aided final product. The quarries are closed from October through April, but the fabrication shop operates year-round. The stone is produced and sold to two customer groups. Standard products are sold to landscapers and homebuilders through dealers in the masonry supply business in both Canada and the United States; the bulk of the orders come from southern Ontario. Custom products are sold directly to the customer, mostly for use on building exteriors. Architects like the unique look of limestone and are often repeat Ledgerock clients. T he compa ny has custom-produced exterior limestone for an impressive list of clients throughout Canada, including the Isabel Bader Theatre, Ontario Heritage Centre and the Ontario Legislative Assembly buildings in Toronto; the Olympic Village in Vancouver; Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, and numerous hospitals and universities. One of Stobbe’s favorites is the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. “It is a ver y impressive building,” Stobbe says. “The architecture is very modern.” Stobbe cont inues to be impressed with the performance of his Doosan wheel loader as well. Not only does the machine help his 150 employees keep up with the time-sensitive dealer and custom orders, but it also gets high marks for ease of maintenance, reliability, and durability in what Stobbe calls a demanding application. “Before we purchased the DL250TC-3, I had no history with Doosan, but the demonstration and the total package (price, financing, and warranty) was quite appealing,” he says. “We are running 30 pieces of heavy equipment. Some employees like one brand, some like another brand. And now we have a growing number of operators who prefer Doosan.” Dry Vac Rentals VARIETY OF LIMESTONE TYPES MINED FROM LEDGEROCK QUARRIES The types of limestone produced in the three quarries owned and operated by Ledgerock in southern Ontario include: ■■ Algonquin: Indigenous to the Wiarton area and not known to exist anywhere else in the world, it displays warm, neutral, and earthy tones. ■■ Eramosa: A very durable and long-lasting product that is unique to the Wiarton and Owen Sound areas. ■■ Flagstone: It is known to split naturally at varying thicknesses. ■■ Hope Bay: With an inconsistent cloud-like pattern, it is a popular choice for exterior applications. ■■ Indiana: The colouring and pattern are consistent throughout the stone, usually buff or gray tones. ■■ Mara: Often polished for use in marble countertops and flooring. ■■ Senesun: Quarrying restrictions and difficulties limit this stone to small and midsize projects. ■■ Strata: Used primarily for retaining and stone walls because of heavy pockmarking. ■■ Wiarton Brown and Grey: Normally sold together for midsize and large construction projects No water Required • Dump on Site Material is Dry • Serving the GTA www.gearequip.com 71 Steinway Blvd., Toronto, ON, M9W 6H6 TRI-CITY EQUIPMENT 416-644-3076 All Equipment For SALE/RENT. More importantly, the engine delivers this increased output at lower rated engine revs, cutting fuel consumption, noise and emissions. JCB has also fine-tuned the match between engine, torque converter, and transmission, to perfectly match the engine with both the standard four-speed and optional five-speed transmissions. This has resulted in fuel efficiency gains of up to 16%. As with other JCB machines, the 457 achieves Tier 4 Final emissions standards without the requirement for a costly and complex DPF. This reduces cost and service time for customers, increasing uptime and profitability. The most visible change to the 457, aside from the new cab, is the adoption of a sloping one-piece engine canopy. This engine cover can be electrically raised away from the cab to provide improved access to the engine and drivetrain for regular maintenance. The rear section can also be hinged away from the machine to provide access to the cooling pack, which now features a swing-out hydraulically-driven, on-demand cooling fan situated at the rear of the machine. The new JCB wheel loader design will be adopted by smaller models in the line as they move to Tier 4 Final emissions standards over the coming months. The Tier 4 JCB 457 w ill come as standard with JCB’s LiveLink telematic system. This provides fleet managers and owners with remote access to real-time fuel consumption and machine working data, including operating hours and fault codes. JCB LiveLink also allows customers to set working hour curfews, outside of which the machine will not function, along with geofencing. This permits the owner to set a geographical area in which the machine can work. If the loader is taken out of this area it will not start, deterring theft from the jobsite. TAILORED DESIGN The 457 is available with four loader arm options, to suit a range of industry applications. These include fourram parallel lift geometry HT arms that provide high torque throughout the full working range. HT arms are ideal for tool carrying applications such as forks and grapples. The HT design comes in both standard and super high lift configurations, allowing the machine to load high sided bulk trailers and to stockpile materials. Traditional Z-bar linkage arms are designed to provide maximum breakout forces, ideal for extraction applications. Again, the Z-bar set-up is available in standard or high lift for truck or hopper loading. All loader arm options can be ordered with two, three, or four-spool hydraulic valve options to work up to two auxiliary controls simultaneously. Flow rates can also be fine-tuned through the in-cab display using the rotary control to meet attachment demand. Quick-hitches are available for both Z-bar and HT loader arms. The 457 is available with t hree a x le opt ions a nd a range of tire combinations. There are standard, limited slip and automatic locking differentials which deliver optimum performance on all types of ground. July 6, 2015 www.equipmentjournal.com B15 | Tier 4 Final Compact Wheel Loaders Increase Jobsite Versatility, Claims Manufacturer Boasting a robust design and good maneuverability, Terex compact wheel loaders, ranging from 23 kW to 76 kW (50 hp to 101 hp), are built to excel in challenging applications, from general construction, earthmoving, and agricultural work to specialized tasks such as landscaping, utility, and municipal work. E q u ipp e d w it h T ie r 4 Final Deutz engines, these compact wheel loaders offer North American contractors maximum productivity on many jobsites thanks to their step-less speed. In addition, up to 90% of the maximum torque is available at start-up. This type of transmission, which replaces more traditional mechanical drive transmissions, provides high efficiency, economical output to reduce fuel consumption without sacrificing power, explains Terex. Terex compact wheel loaders are also equipped with a variable-flow hydraulic system that allows operators to perform several work cycles, such as lifting the bucket without compact wheel loader range, operators can quickly and precisely lift loads to height without constant readjustment of the load angle. This feature allows operators to focus on accurate load placement, while increasing work cycle times for loading and unloading in the second row of the truck. Further, efficiency gains come from the Terex Smart Control operating system which makes it much easier for the operator to configure the machine precisely to an application. Similar to menu guides on smart phones, operating the Terex Smart Control system is very intuitive. W it h i n t he cab, a new dashboard display provides a better at-a-glance of machine operation information, while the multi-function joystick comes with an electro-proportional control circuit and a slow/fast key for precise handling. The keypad has extra-large keys for easy operation and all the fuses and relays are now mounted inside the cab for additional protection. Automatic power shift and Terex fingertip controls help to further simplify operation for drivers, allowing them to concentrate more on the task at hand. A full range of attachments are available for use with Terex compact wheel loaders, including buckets, rippers, fork lifts, load hooks, object handling, sweeper, snow blades, and salt spreaders. These loaders’ oscillating rear axle design, which means t he operator always has the weight of the machine going in the same direction as the bucket, provides a 12-degree swing angle and keeps all four wheels in contact with the ground, which gives operators more ground pressure when pulling backwards, while operating on uneven terrain. Terex compact wheel loaders only use power where it is needed the most, resulting in responsive, demand-driven and intuitive operation with less fuel consumption.
