NZAL Mentoring Update
Kerry Prendergast (above image left) mentors NZAL Established member May Zhang (above image right) and recently shared their
progress to date and email communication:
Dear May
It was nice to meet you and have the opportunity to learn a little about you and your background. It seems to me that there were three
areas you wanted support with:
1. Governance and breaking into that world
2. Networking, particularly as in your mind English is a second language which puts you at a disadvantage and affects your confidence
3. Confidence raising
We talked about three different ways that you could improve these areas:
Governance The first suggestion was to join a local committee, e.g. at your son’s school. You could either approach the School
Secretary or the Chair of the Board of Trustees and see if there are any opportunities.
Secondly, I offered to connect you to the Perinatal Mental Health New Zealand Trust so I have added the link to their website
http://www.pmhnz.org.nz/. If you are interested in joining their board I will connect you once you have had a look and done your due

diligence.
Confidence You said that you loved sewing and it seems to me that another way of building your confidence and meeting other
people, particularly in an area that you love doing, would be to search online to see if there are teaching classes available for you to
join. In fact, it seems from the level of your ability you could also be a teacher, so that is something you could explore.
Financial Networking I suggested that you talk to your immediate line manager and others in senior positions within Westpac. I
have already mentioned it to Sue Foley as I was meeting with her later that afternoon, and she said she would love to help. What you
need to do is to get invited to Westpac events, lunches etc and make sure you go with a colleague so you can walk around with them
and they can introduce you to people. Good oneliners to open conversations are ‘what is your connection’, ‘why have you been
invited to this event’, ‘who do you work for’. The aim is to get them to talk to you, for you to listen and for you to remember when you
meet with them again. It is not about you necessarily talking to them but about you learning to listen and build up a network of people
that you have met at functions.
NZAL Established member and mentor Rodney Wong
with NZAL established member Ronnie Butt.
Ronnie shares the following update on his mentoring journey
with Rodney Wong.
Part of the NZAL Governance Mentoring Program is to get the chance to spend time with someone who has been or still in this
journey. Someone who is experienced in a governance role. Someone who is willing to share his/her experience in this journey. After
our first initial meeting in February, I had the privilege to be invited by my mentor Rodney Wong to his bach at the renowned Tongariro
Lodge for our second meeting. This time we spent a weekend together at the wonderful countryside of Turangi. My family and I were
welcome by Rodney who clearly recognises the importance of family and the many challenges between family and work.

NZAL ENews Update
This time we were able to spend a lot more time together to talk about the role of a director, challenges and also some of the practical
aspects to perform as an effective director. I am gaining valuable advice from Rodney about governance but I also have the chance to
learn more about how he runs his “Family Inc”. It was so nice to have a life coach to show you how you can possibly be a better
husband, father and also a person with the right attitude and making the right choices. This Tongariro weekend experience will remain
a treasured memory.
We also got the chance to find out Rodney is \a pretty good cook……an area which I don’t think I am gifted to match up with.
