Everybody
Wins
Supporting Sport and Culture...Together
Kamloops has been promoting the Tournament Capital program since 1985
and as a result, has supported local sport in hosting hundreds of sport and
cultural events. Support may include administrative, financial, human
resources or providing facilities that are among the best Canada has to offer.
The City of Kamloops is blessed to be home to the Kamloops Blazers Sports
Society Legacy Fund. The annual contributions made to improving
infrastructure within local sport and cultural associations is the envy of
communities everywhere. This funding has improved the event experience
for thousands of participants by providing improved facilities and sport
equipment that otherwise may not have been affordable.
The goals and objectives of the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society Legacy
Fund compliment those of the City of Kamloops and because of that,
we all win!

GRANT IMPACTS 2013
The 2013 grants were provided to 24
organizations representative of the sport
community. Annually measuring the
impacts of the funding and revisiting the
groups receiving them is an important
component of the governance and
oversight of the Sports Legacy Fund.
The funds, as invested by the Society, are
strategically aligned with the recipient
organization’s goals to utilize the grants
to strengthen capacity and maximize the
benefit, whether purchasing equipment,
completing a capital project or developing
coaching skills.
BARRIERE RECREATION SOCIETY
The Barriere Recreation Society received
a grant for $1,218 to purchase loaner
equipment for the After School Youth
Curling Program, which is exceeding
expectations this winter. The success of
the program has been complemented by
parental and curling club membership
participation in on-ice coaching. The brooms
and shoe grippers have an extended usage
capacity, which will sustain the program for
a number of years.
INTERIOR GRASSLANDS CYCLING
CLUB
The Club’s $2,000 funding was invested
in Roller Racing equipment to expand its
program, particularly for winter activities.
The equipment was an integral component
of the first Kamloops Indoor Fondo and
plans are under way to raise funds for the
MS Society.
The launch of the Youth Program in the
spring of 2014 includes Roller Racing as a
major element.

GRANT IMPACTS 2013
KAMLOOPS ADAPTED SPORT
ASSOCIATION
The inaugural year of the Kamloops
Adapted Sports Association (KASA) has been
a tremendous success. With the grant of
$24,000, the organization created the first
Kamloops adapted sport club as well as
integrated wheelchair basketball into the
high school curriculum with a direct impact
on over 1500 students in four schools. The
school program continues to run in 2014
with an anticipated impact of 5000 students.
In 2013, the Association created a
wheelchair tennis program, an integrated
adapted spin class at the Tournament
Capital Centre and a very successful
wheelchair basketball beginner program.
KASA has also reduced user fees of existing
adapted sport athletes by applying for and
receiving multiple grants from organizations
including BC Wheelchair Basketball,
Wheelchair Basketball Canada, the Canadian
Paralympic Committee and ViaSport.
Kamloops Adapted Sports Association
has successfully leveraged the initial support
from the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society
by creating partnerships with the United
Way, School District 73, PacificSport, the City
of Kamloops, the Kamloops Tennis Club,
and many more. These partnerships are
critical to the success of any community
group, and KASA has worked hard to ensure
that the grant is maximized by working in
conjunction with other groups.
The grant has either wholly or partially
contributed to the acquisition of:
• The Kamloops Adapted Sports Association
trailer
• 15 Top End Pro Basketball Wheelchairs
• Quickie All-Court Wheelchairs
• Top End Force-R Hand-cycles
The Sports Legacy Fund contribution
has assisted KASA to complete its 5 year
strategic plan in 1 year, an astonishing 4
years ahead of schedule.
KAMLOOPS AQUATIC CLUB

equipment for the Canada Games Pool.
The continued maintenance of the system
allows the Club to run double ended swim
meets, offering the best competitions in
western Canada. The new equipment was
installed in May 2013 and was used to host
the Kamloops June Classic, accommodating
550 swimmers from BC, Alberta and Yukon,
the 2013 BC Senior Games in August and the
MJB Law Classic Invitation, attended by 550
competitors from BC, Alberta, Washington
State and the Northwest Territories.
The Club successfully bid for and ran
the 2014 BC “AAA” Provincial Swimming
Championships based on its reputation for
running well organized meets, which are
supported by the state of the art timing
systems.
KAMLOOPS JUNIOR FOOTBALL
ASSOCIATION (BRONCOS)
Much needed equipment replacement
was funded by a grant of $7,600 to the
Broncos Junior Football Team. The team
prides itself not about wins or losses, but
about the development of the athlete. The
organization judges its success based on
the players it assists making it to the next
level. This past year, 4 players were scouted
by the BC Lions organization and 7 received
scholarships to play in the Canadian
Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Football. The
equipment upgrades ensure the safety of
the players.
KAMLOOPS MINOR BASEBALL
ASSOCIATION
The grant of $15,000 was year 2 of a
five year commitment for the building of
the McArthur Island indoor training facility,
which opened in February 2013 and began
programing for all age divisions in Kamloops
Minor Baseball from 5 to 18 years of age. The
facility is in full use providing training and
coaching to over 400 KMBA athletes and
the goal to make it community based has

been successful, providing a site for soccer,
fastball, lacrosse and slow pitch.
The building has become a complete
training facility with the addition of a sports
trainer and programs on strength and
speed training available to the Midget AAA
baseball players, improving all aspects of the
game. The grant has created a permanent
impact on the development of the athletes
and extends the participation beyond
inclement weather conditions.
KAMLOOPS PERFORMANCE
CYCLING CENTRE
The Kamloops Performance Cycling
Centre (KPCC, Kamloops Bike Ranch) is
a community based non- profit society
focused on off road cycling competitions
and providing the maintenance and
upgrading of recreational cycling trails
suitable for a large cross-section of rider
abilities. The Kamloops Bike Ranch is now
being run as a City Park as well as a Sports
Facility under the management and
direction of the KPCC. Many events are
hosted at the facility, including sanctioned
and non- sanctioned races, men’s, women’s
and kid’s camps, all of which will benefit
from the project to provide power to the
park.
The grant of $7,500 contributed to
phase 1 of the plan, which on completion
will provide power for timing, site security
and lighting. The Kamloops Bike Ranch is
the largest non-resort Municipal Bike Park
of its kind, providing training opportunities
for amateur athletes from various off road
cycling disciplines. Its world renowned
reputation will be enhanced by the
upgrades, which will also provide safe
recreational opportunities to both residents
and tourists visiting the facility.
KAMLOOPS SAILING ASSOCIATION
The KSA received $15,000 in funding to
complete the purchase of a 2013 Boston
Whaler 15’ safety boat with a 60 horsepower
outboard motor and trailer for use on Nicola
Lake. It was instrumental in the success of
the 2013 BC Sailing Youth Championships,
BC Laser Master Championships and various
Association activities. It was used in heavy
wind environments to tow keel sail boats
to safety as well as assisting kite boarders

SYNCHRONIZED SWIM CLUB
The grant of $4,969 was used by the
Club for the purchase of an underwater
sound system, which enhances the
synchronized swimming training as well as
local competitions. The improved reliability
is a benefit to the swimmers and coaches, as
music is an integral part of the performance.
Providing the funds has strengthened the
capacity of the organization as it prepares to
host the Canadian National Championships
in June 2014.
KAMLOOPS TRACK AND FIELD CLUB
The Kamloops Track and Field Club, a
non-profit community based organization,
has been a strong and stable member of the
Kamloops sporting community since 1972.
Its primary purpose is to provide programs
www.kamloopsblazerssportssociety.com in track and field and cross country
training to the youth in Kamloops and the
surrounding area. It is the second largest
club in the province.
The KTFC provides track and field
programs in over 10 events (shot put, discus,
javelin, hammer, sprints, middle distance,
hurdles, pole-vault, long and triple jump
and high jump) to athletes from the ages
of 9-100+. The Club recently added a Track
Rascals’ program which provides children
ages 6-8 an opportunity to participate in
track and field in a fun environment.
The 2013 $5,000 grant contributed to
the purchase of high jump mats to replace
those utilized since the 1993 Canada Games.
In 2014 the organization will host over
15 competitions in which these mats will
be used serving over 7300 athletes at the
Tournament Capital Centre and Hillside
Stadium.

to regionally shared timing equipment. The
new equipment improved meet capacity
and assisted the coaches with tracking
swimmers’ times, mapping workouts and
filming for stroke correction. Malfunctions in
meets were a common occurrence before
the acquisition of the new timing system.
KIDSPORT KAMLOOPS CHAPTER
The Kamloops Chapter is a volunteer
driven organization affiliated with KidSport
Canada. The group supported 186 children
to access organized sport activities in 2013.
The SLF grant of $35,000 was a significant
component of its support.
Mission Statement: We believe that
no kid should be left on the sidelines
and all should be given the opportunity
to experience the positive benefits of
organized sports.

KidSport™ Canada is a national notfor-profit organization that provides
financial assistance for registration fees
and equipment to kids aged 18 and under.
Through a confidential application process
we provide grants so they can play a
season of sport. One of our primary goals
is to support the network of 11 provincial/
territorial KidSport chapters and 177
community chapters across Canada in their
fundraising and sport activities.
Benefits to the Community: KidSport

KAMLOOPS MINOR HOCKEY
ASSOCIATION COACHES
CONFERENCE
The 2013 grant of $5,000 marked the
fifth year of a contribution to this most
successful annual coaches conference, held
in Kamloops during July. The grant received
from the Blazers Sports Society Legacy Fund
allows the organizers to keep the costs
down and provide an affordable conference.
The coaches and presenters are given
apparel along with supplies such as coaches’
boards, folders and drill books. It helps with
the audio-video equipment that is used for
the presentations. The grant is also directed
to market and promote the event outside of
Kamloops. That has resulted in a number of
the participants coming from Northern BC,
the Island, Lower Mainland and Alberta.
NAVY LEAGUE OF CANADA
The 137 Royal Canadian Sea and 102
Prince Robert Navy League cadets were
thrilled to receive $4,900 funding this past
year towards their Sail program. Sailing
skills are required for sea cadets to earn
promotions and summer training positions.
It is an integral part of the program and a
highlight for the youth age 9 – 18 in these
two cadet corps. In order for local cadets
to improve their opportunities to race at a
competitive level, they need the equipment
to allow them to practice whenever chance
allows. A portion of the funds were used to
purchase an enclosed Mirage utility trailer
www.kamloopsblazerssportssociety.com and the remainder for a sailboat trailer for a
previously dry-docked sailboat.
TRU ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS
The $10,000 directed to the Kamloops
and region student athletes benefited the
sport program and provided the recipients
the incentive and opportunity to attend TRU.
The scholarship funds were divided into four
$2,500 grants and awarded to Josh Wolfram,
Alana Bekkering, Kelsey Martin and Justin
Wallace.
Josh Wolfram returned to Kamloops
and is one of the men’s basketball team’s
leading scorers and rebounder. He is
being counted on to lead TRU to a playoff
berth and is potentially a candidate to be
a Canada West All Star. Justin Wallace also
returned to the soccer Wolfpack and his
impact was immediate as the PACWEST
Player of the Year, the CCAA Player of the
Year and as team leader culminating in
the PACWEST Championship. An injury
excluded his participation during the CCAA
championships where the team achieved a
silver medal.
Alana Bekkering and Kelsey Martin both
distinguished themselves individually while
leading the women’s soccer team to a third
Provincial Championship. Kelsey was an
All Star in the PACWEST while Alana was a
repeat Player of the Year. The women’s team
competed well at the Nationals, winning a
bronze medal.
All the students have performed well
in their chosen sport as well as in the
classroom. The scholarships provide the
financial assistance to keep Kamloops
athletes at TRU.

of nordic skiing at Sun Peaks, B.C. They
are a new club with the 2012/2013 season
being the inaugural year, and it was a
very successful season with the following
achievements:
• The club registered over 150 members
• 18 students enrolled in the first Jackrabbit
programme
• Created a fun and positive experience on
the trails for the members through social
gatherings and the weekly “Tips and Tricks”
• Conducted 2 successful loppets in
conjunction with Sun Peaks Resort
Corporation
• Developed a new website (www.
sunpeaksnordicclub.com)
• Year-round interest generated as many
club members moved from nordic skiing
in the winter months to meeting up on
a weekly basis in the summer months
for a mountain bike ride, continuing the
commarderie developed over the winter.
The summer months were spent looking
into the long range needs of the Nordic
Club in order to successfully grow interest
in nordic skiing and helping to continue
with the development of the growing
community of Sun Peaks. The Board of
Directors met and created a strategic plan
for the next 3 - 5 years. This plan addresses
areas such as sustainability of nordic skiing
through programme development (youth
and masters), communications (website
development), trail development (including
the development of a nordic playground or
terrain park), membership growth (social)
and funding requirements (long range).
The $5,430 grant enabled the club to

hosted the first loppet of 2014 and utlized
the new equipment. With 125 participants
on course (100% increase over 2013 and
over 60 participants under 18 with the
youngest being 3 years old), the signage and
the bibs made for a very well marked course
and easy to keep track of all participants
from a safety perspective. With a large
number of youth participants, this was very
well received by parents/coaches and many
positive comments were noted.
PACIFICSPORT INTERIOR
The PacificSport Interior Coaching
Development Grants have been an integral
Society Board initiative and were continued
in 2013. The overall grant of $80,000
contributed to this funding as well as
$10,000 to assist in athlete travel and $5,000
for enhancing coach ancillary support.
The grants are totally leveraged by the
ten organizations that use the grants to
hire a certified coach. The mandate for the
program is developed and administered by
PacificSport and is as follows:
• To develop opportunities for the
community by building capacity
• To develop athletes with qualified coaches
• To work towards succession planning for
coaching expertise
• To contribute to making our children more
active with lifelong activity
• To build the base for potential athletes to

OVERLANDER SKI CLUB
The Overlander Ski Club is a registered,
non-profit society and has operated in the
Kamloops area since 1981. The objectives
of the Ski Club are to foster cross country
skiing and ski racing and to assist in the
development of skiers in the Kamloops area.
In the most recent completed season, the
2012-13 membership was 552 persons. The
year 1/3 grant of $13,333 has contributed to
the upgrade of the Stake Lake facilities.
Last year, as a result of excellent snow
conditions, trail attendance reached a new
record at 14,467 and the trails were open for
120 days from December 2th to March 31st.
Snowshoe trail use was also at a new high
of 975.
The trail system was used for teaching
skiers of all ages and abilities. The S’Kool Ski
program, where OSC partners with schools
to introduce cross country skiing to school
aged children, was very successful with 462
participants from 14 schools and groups.
The Club has begun an initiative to
improve the existing facilities for skiers
at Stake Lake Cross Country Ski Trails by
installing a heated washroom building
beside the day lodge. Per the Strategic Plan,
the first priority is provision of heated flush
toilet facilities.
The current washroom facilities consist
of several pit toilets that are unpleasant
to use in the winter, especially for parents
with young children, older skiers and some
physically disabled visitors.
The facility would have male and female
sections, each suitable for use by disabled
visitors.
The benefits of the washroom facility
include:
• Improving the skiing experience for
the members, especially those who are
