THE LEGEND AND TRADITION OF COMMUNITY LIVES ON! 2013/14 KAMLOOPS BLAZERS HOCKEY CLUB 10 Sports Legacy Fund Annual Report – 2014 GRANT IMPACTS 2013 The 2013 grants were provided to 24 organizations representative of the sport community. Annually measuring the impacts of the funding and revisiting the groups receiving them is an important component of the governance and oversight of the Sports Legacy Fund. The funds, as invested by the Society, are strategically aligned with the recipient organization’s goals to utilize the grants to strengthen capacity and maximize the benefit, whether purchasing equipment, completing a capital project or developing coaching skills. BARRIERE RECREATION SOCIETY The Barriere Recreation Society received a grant for $1,218 to purchase loaner equipment for the After School Youth Curling Program, which is exceeding expectations this winter. The success of the program has been complemented by parental and curling club membership participation in on-ice coaching. The brooms and shoe grippers have an extended usage capacity, which will sustain the program for a number of years. INTERIOR GRASSLANDS CYCLING CLUB The Club’s $2,000 funding was invested in Roller Racing equipment to expand its program, particularly for winter activities. The equipment was an integral component of the first Kamloops Indoor Fondo and plans are under way to raise funds for the MS Society. The launch of the Youth Program in the spring of 2014 includes Roller Racing as a major element. Barriere Recreation Society www.kamloopsblazerssportssociety.com 11 GRANT IMPACTS 2013 KAMLOOPS ADAPTED SPORT ASSOCIATION The inaugural year of the Kamloops Adapted Sports Association (KASA) has been a tremendous success. With the grant of $24,000, the organization created the first Kamloops adapted sport club as well as integrated wheelchair basketball into the high school curriculum with a direct impact on over 1500 students in four schools. The school program continues to run in 2014 with an anticipated impact of 5000 students. In 2013, the Association created a wheelchair tennis program, an integrated adapted spin class at the Tournament Capital Centre and a very successful wheelchair basketball beginner program. KASA has also reduced user fees of existing adapted sport athletes by applying for and receiving multiple grants from organizations including BC Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Basketball Canada, the Canadian Paralympic Committee and ViaSport. Kamloops Adapted Sports Association has successfully leveraged the initial support from the Kamloops Blazers Sports Society by creating partnerships with the United Way, School District 73, PacificSport, the City of Kamloops, the Kamloops Tennis Club, and many more. These partnerships are critical to the success of any community group, and KASA has worked hard to ensure that the grant is maximized by working in conjunction with other groups. The grant has either wholly or partially contributed to the acquisition of: • The Kamloops Adapted Sports Association trailer • 15 Top End Pro Basketball Wheelchairs • Quickie All-Court Wheelchairs • Top End Force-R Hand-cycles The Sports Legacy Fund contribution has assisted KASA to complete its 5 year strategic plan in 1 year, an astonishing 4 years ahead of schedule. The equipment upgrades ensure the safety of the players. KAMLOOPS MINOR BASEBALL ASSOCIATION The grant of $15,000 was year 2 of a five year commitment for the building of the McArthur Island indoor training facility, which opened in February 2013 and began programing for all age divisions in Kamloops Minor Baseball from 5 to 18 years of age. The Club recently added a Track Rascals’ program which provides children ages 6-8 an opportunity to participate in track and field in a fun environment. The 2013 $5,000 grant contributed to the purchase of high jump mats to replace those utilized since the 1993 Canada Games. In 2014 the organization will host over 15 competitions in which these mats will be used serving over 7300 athletes at the Tournament Capital Centre and Hillside Stadium. KAMLOOPS TSUNAMI SUMMER SWIM CLUB The $5,700 grant to the swim club was utilized to purchase 2 iPads and contribute 15 GRANT IMPACTS 2013 to regionally shared timing equipment. KAMLOOPS MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION COACHES CONFERENCE The 2013 grant of $5,000 marked the fifth year of a contribution to this most successful annual coaches conference, held in Kamloops during July. The grant received from the Blazers Sports Society Legacy Fund allows the organizers to keep the costs down and provide an affordable conference. A portion of the funds were used to purchase an enclosed Mirage utility trailer www.kamloopsblazerssportssociety.com and the remainder for a sailboat trailer for a previously dry-docked sailboat. TRU ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS The $10,000 directed to the Kamloops and region student athletes benefited the sport program and provided the recipients the incentive and opportunity to attend TRU. The scholarship funds were divided into four $2,500 grants and awarded to Josh Wolfram, Alana Bekkering, Kelsey Martin and Justin Wallace. Josh Wolfram returned to Kamloops and is one of the men’s basketball team’s leading scorers and rebounder. He is being counted on to lead TRU to a playoff berth and is potentially a candidate to be a Canada West All Star. Justin Wallace also returned to the soccer Wolfpack and his impact was immediate as the PACWEST Player of the Year, the CCAA Player of the Year and as team leader culminating in the PACWEST Championship. An injury excluded his participation during the CCAA championships where the team achieved a silver medal. Alana Bekkering and Kelsey Martin both distinguished themselves individually while leading the women’s soccer team to a third Provincial Championship. PACIFICSPORT INTERIOR The PacificSport Interior Coaching Development Grants have been an integral Society Board initiative and were continued in 2013. The overall grant of $80,000 contributed to this funding as well as $10,000 to assist in athlete travel and $5,000 for enhancing coach ancillary support. The grants are totally leveraged by the ten organizations that use the grants to hire a certified coach. The mandate for the program is developed and administered by PacificSport and is as follows: • To develop opportunities for the community by building capacity • To develop athletes with qualified coaches • To work towards succession planning for coaching expertise • To contribute to making our children more active with lifelong activity • To build the base for potential athletes to excel Sun Peaks Nordic Club www.kamloopsblazerssportssociety.com 19 GRANT IMPACTS 2013 The coaching investment provides capacity and is the foundation for many of the sport organizations. OVERLANDER SKI CLUB The Overlander Ski Club is a registered, non-profit society and has operated in the Kamloops area since 1981. The objectives of the Ski Club are to foster cross country skiing and ski racing and to assist in the development of skiers in the Kamloops area. In the most recent completed season, the 2012-13 membership was 552 persons. The year 1/3 grant of $13,333 has contributed to the upgrade of the Stake Lake facilities. Last year, as a result of excellent snow conditions, trail attendance reached a new record at 14,467 and the trails were open for 120 days from December 2th to March 31st. Snowshoe trail use was also at a new high of 975. The trail system was used for teaching skiers of all ages and abilities. The S’Kool Ski program, where OSC partners with schools to introduce cross country skiing to school aged children, was very successful with 462 participants from 14 schools and groups. The Club has begun an initiative to improve the existing facilities for skiers at Stake Lake Cross Country Ski Trails by installing a heated washroom building beside the day lodge. Per the Strategic Plan, the first priority is provision of heated flush toilet facilities. The current washroom facilities consist of several pit toilets that are unpleasant to use in the winter, especially for parents with young children, older skiers and some physically disabled visitors. The facility would have male and female sections, each suitable for use by disabled visitors. The benefits of the washroom facility include: • Improving the skiing experience for the members, especially those who are PACIFICSPORT INTERIOR SPORTS LEGACY FUNDS: COACHING GRANTS*: $65,000 Kamloops Canoe and Kayak Club 2013 2009-12 5,000.00 25,000.00 Kamloops Classics Swim Club 2,500.00 10,000.00 Kamloops Gymnastics and Trampoline Centre 7,500.00 30,000.00 Kamloops Long Blades Association 10,000.00 50,000.00 Kamloops Minor Baseball Association 10,000.00 50,000.00 Kamloops Track and Field Club 10,000.00 50,000.00 5,000.00 25,000.00 KATTS Overlander Ski Club 5,000.00 Sun Peaks Alpine Ski Club 5,000.00 25,000.00 Thompson Okanagan Diving Training Centre 5,000.00 25,000.00 TRU Athletics (Basketball) TOTAL 20 5,000.00 25,000.00 65,000.00 320,000.00 Sports Legacy Fund Annual Report – 2014 GRANT IMPACTS 2013 parents with young children, or have disabled family members • Increasing the appeal of Stake Lake for local seniors • Increasing the acceptability of crosscountry skiing for first time skiers including school children who are part of the Ski S’Kool program • Increasing the attractiveness of Stake Lake as a skiing destination for out of town visitors. Most of the neighboring ski trails (Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton) have heated toilet facilities and this places the Club at a disadvantage when attempting to attract out-of-town visitors. • Allowing Overlander Ski Club to take further steps toward establishing paranordic programs at Stake Lake The initial work in moving forwards on the development of the water/septic system resulted in costs being higher than anticipated. This increase in costs has shifted the scheduled completion date to September 2014. TEAM BROWN CURLING 2013 was the best one yet for this team of 17 year old skilled curlers.
