Still, it will present hazards if the device is not operated by qualified or, at least trained staff, if the device is used contrary to the approved applications (see 1.5). Problems can arise: for the health and life of operators and other persons, for the lifting device and other valuable goods. 1.2 Instructions for the Installation, Maintenance and Operating Personnel The device must be installed and maintained by qualified personnel, mechanics and electricians. Any work on the electrical equipment may be carried out only by a qualified electrician. Each person in your company involved in the installation, start-up, operation, maintenance, and repair of the device must have read and understood the operating instructions and especially the chapters "Safety" and ”Operating” therein. Your company must ensure by internal measures that the operators of the lifting device are properly trained, that they have read and understood the operating instructions, that the operating instructions will be available to them at any time. The responsibilities for the tasks carried out with the device must be clearly organized and observed. Ambiguity regarding responsibilities must not exist. We recommend that you protect the lifting device from unauthorized use, e. g. by a key-switch. 1.3 Hazard Alert Symbols The hazard alert messages in this manual are labelled as follows: in this Manual Identifies imminent hazard. If you do not avoid it, death or servere injury will result. Danger Identifies a potentially hazardous situation. If you do not avoid it, minor or moderate injury can result. Caution 1.4 Installation Site Requirements The lifting device must not be operated in rooms with explosive atmosphere. If desired, the JUMBO can be supplied in explosion-protected version. The ambient temperature must be between +0°C and 40 °C (if this temperature may be exceeded, consult the manufacturer). Ensure by internal instructions and checks that the installation site is always clean and well organized. When using the device on dusty loads or in dusty surroundings use the dust filter on the suction side of the blower. It the device is used outside closed rooms / halls, please check back with the manufacturer. 1.5 Intended Use Danger BA 30.11.02.00037 The lifting device JUMBO is designed to lift and transport items of all kinds. The maximum lifting capacity must not be exceeded, however. Observe the name plate! The loads must be stable enough that they cannot be destroyed during raising! Transport of persons and animals with the load or the lifting device itself is forbidden! Unauthorized alteration of the lifting device is forbidden for safety reasons! Status: 06.2006 / Index 00 Page 4/21 Operating Manual Vacuum Lifting Device JUMBOERGO / SPRINT Chapter 1 Safety J. If there is a sudden interruption of the vacuum generator, the underpressure at the suction head decreases. As a result the lifting tube of the device descends and the load lowers. This happens in a sudden power failure. A non-return valve in the rotary suction fitting ensures that the vacuum can escape only slowly. However, this will work only when the operator handle (JUMBOERGO) resp. the regulator lever (JUMBOSPRINT) is moved to "Lift". When power fails, immediately put the load down if possible. If this is not possible, immediately leave the dangerous area near the load. The device generates a very strong suction which can draw in hair and clothing. Do not look into the suction opening or place small objects close to suction openings when the device is switched on. 1.8 Workplace The workplace of the operator is in front of the control unit. Make sure, that there will be no unauthorized operating of the main switch from the lifting device (for example with a padlock at the main switch). Never stand below the load. Danger 1.9 Instructions for the Operator As an operator of the lifting device you must be trained before start-up. You must have read and understood the operating instructions and especially the chapters "Safety" and ”Operating”. Be sure, that only authorized persons use the device. You are responsible for others in the operating range of the equipment. Local safety requirements are fully applicable. Safety instructions in this document are complementary to the rules in force and do not supersede the latter. 1.10 Equipment for Personal Protection Wear safety shoes when operating the device. Before transporting dangerous goods the appropriate safety clothes have to be put on. Turn the control handle fully to position "Lift". The operating unit lowers itself slowly with the load. 1.12 Checking the Guards A non-return valve is mounted inside the rotary suction fitting. It prevents the load from dropping off the vacuum head if there is a sudden power failure. Check the function of this non-return valve at the beginning of each shift (when operating in shifts) or once a week (when operating continually). During the check stay outside the dangerous area. When power fails, immediately put the load down if possible. If this is not possible, immediately leave the dangerous area near the load. Checking: Switch on the lifting device. Lift a load and turn the control handle fully to position "Lift". Switch off the lifting device. The device must lower itself slowly with the load. The load must not drop off at once. Correct faults before operating the device. If faults occur during operation, switch the device off and correct the faults before continuing work with the device. 2 Technical Data Type Max. The lifting device is suspended on the rotary suction fitting. The lifting device can be rotated endlessly. 3.5 Lifting Tube The lifting tube transmits the vacuum to the vacuum head(s) and realize the lifting movement of the lifting device. 3.6 Control Unit With the control unit the lifting and lowering of loads is controlled by changing the vacuum in the lifting device. It regulates the flow of outside air to the lifting unit. JUMBOERGO On the JUMBOERGO the flow of outside air and therefore the vacuum is controlled by an orifice disc which is actuated by the rotary handle (Pos. 5.1). The load lifts when the orifice disc is fully closed (rotary handle in position "Lift"). The farther the disc is opened (the rotary handle is turned to position "Lower"), the more outside air is sucked in. The load will lower. The tube cylinder (Pos. 5.3) is connected to the lifting tube (4) and the vacuum head (6). The load sensing valve is located inside the tube support cylinder. JUMBOSPRINT 3.7 Vacuum Heads The flow of outside air and therefore the vacuum is controlled by an orifice disc. It is operated by a regulator lever (Pos. 5.2). The load is lifted when the control opening is fully closed by the slider. The farther the control opening is open, the more outside air will be drawn in. The load will lower. Note: If no dust filter is used, foreign objects must be excluded from the guarantee as a possible cause of failure. Motor Overload switch With this device, the blower can be switched on and off. An integrated overcurrent switch prevents the blower motor form being damaged by high current. Dust Filter Remote Control Remote Control allows you to switch the lifting device on and off from the handle. An separate control box with main and motor overload switch is supplied for this accessory. The transmitter is fixed on the control unit with a powerful magic tape. Schmalz Blower Box The Schmalz Blower Box houses the vacuum blower and reduces the noise to approx. 65 dB(A). The Schmalz Blower Box can be operated only at an ambient temperature of max. 40°C Ensure that sufficient air can always reach the top opening (cooling air for the motor) to avoid overheating the blower. The exhaust opening also must be kept open. We recommend a distance of at least 20 cm in all directions. Attention: exhaust air might be very hot danger of skin burns Caution Mounting sets Mounting sets are available for attaching blowers or the Schmalz Blower Box horizontally to crane posts, and for attaching blowers vertically to crane posts. Rotating Unit The rotating unit permits the load and vacuum head to be rotated independently. This is useful when stacking cartons on pallets or into wire mesh baskets. Like a vacuum head the rotating unit is held by four screws. The vacuum head is screwed to it. Swivelling Unit The swivelling unit allows to swivel the load from the vertical to the horizontal position. Like a vacuum head, the swivelling unit is held by the four screws. The vacuum head is attached to it by screws. The lifting capacity of the suction heads for the swivelling unit are based on a coefficient of friction µ = 0.5 for the contact area lip/load surface. Attention: Suction heads for horizontal handling may not be used at the swivelling unit. Tube cylinder Extension The tube cylinder extension is designed for handle parts in high-sided boxes, crates, wire-mesh boxes, etc. The tube cylinder extension has to be mounted between the vacuum head and the control unit. Ventilation unit The ventilation unit enables a more gentle detach of the loads with airtight surface while using double and quadruple vacuum heads. Quick-Change Adapter The quick-change adapter is designed for quickly changing the vacuum heads. The equivalent vacuum heads and the control unit have to be equipped with the components of the quick-change adapter. Vacuum gauge The vacuum gauge indicates the underpressure at the vacuum head and thereby the status of operation of the lifting device. It is mounted at the control unit. Protection Tube The protection tube is a protective covering for the lifting tube. Any work on the electrical equipment may be carried out only by a qualified electrician. Install vacuum blower as described in the separate instructions. Mount the blower with the mounting holes in a location of your choice. The blower does not have to be secured for floor mounting. The mounting elements are supplied for mounting on a post crane (optional accessory). Do not block or cover the exhaust side of the blower (outlet of the silencer; this would cause overheating. Connect the supply hose to the hose nipple on the suction connector of the blower and secure it with a hose clamp. Attach the other end of the supply hose to the rotation inlet or recommended dust filter. When installing, ensure that no particles of dirt enter the suction pipe. Connect the blower electrically according to local regulations. Observe the correct voltage stated on the name plate. Connect a disconnector (motor protector) and overcurrent cutout (type C) in series. Checking the Rotation Before commissioning, check that the blower rotation direction corresponds with that in the separate manual. Hang up the spring snap in the suspension tape. Put the suction hose in the suspension band (see figure 4.2). Hang up the suspension band with carbine swivel in the transport trailer. Suction hose Suspension tape Transport trailer Spring snap Caution When mounting the suction hose, observe that the hose is hanged up spirally turned (∅ at least 800 mm). Its length has to be the 1.3 to 1.5 times the jib length. The suction hose must hang down freely. It must not lie flat, rub or catch on anything. 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 10 8 9 Danger Mount the rotary suction fitting (7) to the transport trailer (5) of the crane. Fasten it safely! Insert the transport trailer into the crane jib (2). Mount the end stop (6) at the end of the crane jib. Never work without an end stop on the crane jib, otherwise the lifting device can fall off. Connect the suction hose to the rotary suction fitting (4) and secure it with a hose clamp. If you install the suction hose at a crane pillar, ceiling, wall or floor, note that the hose contracts under the pressure of vacuum by approximately 10 to 15 %. Therefore, a loose installation with length compensation should be provided. Longer, linear distances can also be bridged with a plastic pipe. The overall length should not exceed 50 m. Long suction hoses reduce the capacity and the dynamics of the tube lifter. A valve (2) in the tube support cylinder is used to adjust it. When you apply the vacuum head to the load a valve is fully opened by a plunger (without load) and the valve rod in the vacuum head. The load can be sucked and lifted. Adjustment: Turn the adjustment screw (1) at the operating unit (accessible from the bottom). Turn clockwise (direction of arrow) Valve becomes opened. Turn counter-clockwise Valve becomes closed. The farther the valve is opened the lower the device hovers. Danger When the valve is closed totally the device bounce up abruptly as soon the blower is switched on! Figure 4.3 4.3 Shorten the lifting The lifting tube can be easily shortened on the spot if an end of the tube was damaged because of improper handling or if the lifting tube must be shortened tube due to space problems (low height of the facility). Shortening of the tube will lead to a reduction of the lifting height! Attention: do not shorten the tube so far that the load with stretched lifting tube can not reach the ground anymore. In this case the safety function is not longer guaranteed. Note: lifting stroke of the Tube Lifter is approximately 0.7 times the length of the lifting tube (in the unstressed condition). To shorten the lifting tube at the rotary coupling, the tube lifter has to be taken down. A knife, bolt cutter, plastic adhesive tape (Coroplast) and a 13 mm fork wrench is required. Procedure: Push the lifting tube with hose clamp over the adapter. Take care, that the sealing (1) is between adapter and lifting tube (see drawing). Place the hose clamp onto the sealing (see drawing) and tighten it. BA 30.11.02.00037 Status: 06.2006 / Index 00 Page 12/21 Operating Manual Vacuum Lifting Device JUMBOERGO / SPRINT J. The following safety instructions are Danger complimentary to the rules in force and do not supersede the latter: Wear safety shoes. Before transporting dangerous goods the corresponding safety clothes have to be put on. Never exceed the maximum lifting capacity of the lifting device. Observe the name plate on the handle. Do not stand below the load. Always keep clear of the load. Never carry people or animals with the load or the lifting device itself ! Operate only when you can view the entire working area. Look out for other persons in the working area. Never manoeuvre loads above people. Never lean about lifted loads. Switch the blower on only when the handle is turned fully down to "Lower" (JUMBOERGO) resp. the regulator lever is pressed completely down (JUMBOSPRINT) and only when the lifting device does not rest on a load. If the device rests on a load, it could suddenly jump upward when you switch on the blower. Do not let go of the handle whilst lifting a load. Do not pull loads to the side or drag them along with the lifting device. Do not rip loose loads that have become jammed. If there is a power failure immediately turn the handle (JUMBOERGO) resp. push upwards the regulator lever (JUMBOSPRINT) fully to "Lift" to prevent the load from dropping off. The reserve vacuum will let the lifting device lower slowly with the load. Apply suction and lift only to appropriate loads (check for stability and porosity). The lifting device is mounted into the crane rails with rail end stops. While moving against the rail end stops, strong horizontal forces can occur. These forces can result in releasing the load. Handling of cartons/bags: If the content of a carton/bag drops out of the container, the equipment can snap upwards accident danger. Therefore keep sufficient distance to the control unit (stretch arms). 5.2 Lifting, Lowering The following operating steps must be checked by a qualified mechanic prior to and Landing Loads use of the device by the operating personnel. Correct faults before start-up. The hovering position (without load) must be adjusted prior to start up, see 4.2. Ö A frequent comment from a new user is that the control is too sensitive. The twist grip is quite sensitive, but this is intentional in the design. However, the operator needs to be trained and familiarized with the sensitivity of the control in order to safely use the lifting system. Ö The lifter will respond quickly and instantaneously when gripping the twist grip like a motorcycle throttle and while turning the grip quickly. It is recommended when first becoming familiar with the control to grip the blue twist grip with only the thumb and forefinger (“Novice” Hand Position shown below) while resting the palm on the painted handlebar to the right of the blue grip. Ö The operator should slowly and gently adjust the twist grip until the motion of the lifter becomes controlled and smooth. The operator is likely to create a dangerous oscillating motion if the grip is twisted abruptly, so the “Novice” Hand Position makes it easier initially to make smooth height and lift speed adjustments. Ö The learning curve is quite short, but, nonetheless, there is a period of time the operator must take to become accustomed to the sensitivity (whether it is from an hour of frequent use or a day of occasional use). Ö The operator will find that once he can anticipate how quickly the lifter will react to his input that he will feel comfortable gripping the blue grip with the “Expert” Hand Position shown below. “Expert” Hand Position “Novice” Hand Position BA 30.11.02.00037 Schmalz Inc. 5250-150 Old Wake Forest Rd Raleigh, NC 27609 Tel (919) 713-0880 Fax (919) 713-0883 Status: 06.2006 / Index 00 Page 15a/21 Operating Manual Vacuum Lifting Device JUMBOERGO / SPRINT Chapter 5 Operating J. Slowly move the regulator lever (1) downward - "Lower". The lifting tube descends and the vacuum head lowers with the load. Do not operate the regulator lever control abruptly, while you firmly hold the handlebar (3), as this can cause the load to fall off, because the vacuum suddenly vanishes. Lower the load to the chosen position. To land the load push the regulator lever down all the way. Tip the valve control box a little and lift it off the load. The ventilation unit enables a more gentle detach of the loads while using double and quadruple vacuum heads. Activating the ventilation unit takes place via the cable pull with lever, which is attached on the left side of the control unit. The ventilation unit may only be activated, if the load lies completely and safely on a base. Do not operate the ventilation unit while a load is lifted. This can cause the load to fall off, because the vacuum suddenly vanishes. This is especially true it the operator holds the handle firmly. Lower the load to the chosen position. Turn the handle (JUMBOERGO) resp. the regulator lever (JUMBOSPRINT) slowly toward "Lower". The lifting tube descends and the vacuum head lowers with the load. Do not operate this control abruptly, while you firmly hold the bar, as this can cause the load to fall off, because the vacuum suddenly vanishes. When the load is lowered on the ground, move the control toward ”Release” and pull the lever of the ventilation unit. The suction heads are now ventilated. Hold the lever and gently move the control towards ”Lift”. The load will be separated from the vacuum head. Release the lever of the ventilation unit if the suction heads are cleared. The different vacuum heads are designed to lift various loads. They are easily changed and can be mounted at 90° turns. A suction head must be used only with the corresponding lifting tube or accessories (e.g. hose cylinder extension). Example: The suction head EG 85 (max. load 85 kg) must be used only with the lifting unit HE 85 (max. load 85 kg) for JUMBOERGO / SPRINT 85. Proceeding: Place the operator unit (1) on the vacuum head (2). Mount the vacuum head with four screws (3) and tooth lock washers. Switch box with controller and radio receiver Motor-protection switch The motor-protection switch on the front of the switch box protects the blower motor and is also used as the main switch for manually switching radio remote control on and off. If the radio remote control is switched off manually or if the power fails, the button on the transmitter must be pressed in order to switch on the blower again. 2 Transmitter Installing the Radio Remote Control Caution: The radio remote control may be installed only by a qualified electrician! Install the switch box in a suitable position (such as on a wall). Connect the electric power to terminal block X1 as shown in the enclosed circuit diagram. Secure the hand-held transmitter to the operating handle of the lifting device with the aid of the Velcro strip supplied with the system. Caution: 3 For safety reasons, it is not permitted to carry the transmitter in the pockets of trousers, jackets, aprons, etc. (particularly if these pockets contain other objects), since this may result in inadvertent actuation of the transmitter! Setting the Codes of the Transmitter and Receiver The radio system is set to a specific code in the factory. If this should result in interference, or if several systems installed close to each other have the same codes, you can change the code of the transmitter. For this purpose, each unit has a coding switch with 10 bits, providing 1024 codes. After the transmitter code has been changed, the receiver must "learn" the new code before it can be used. 4 Setting the Transmitter Coded Proceed as follows: Carefully press the yellow cover release on the bottom end of the transmitter and open the cover. Set the various switches of the coding switch to "ON" or "OFF" to set the desired code. Carefully close the cover again. Proceed as follows: Disconnect the controller from the electric power supply. Remove the six screws and open the cover of the switch box. Connect the supply voltage to the controller again so that the receiver can be trained. Press the "Learn" button on the receiver for about 10 seconds to reset the processor in the receiver. A successful reset is indicated by momentary activation of the relay. Briefly press the "Learn" button on the receiver and then press the button on the transmitter within 5 seconds. If the code is learnt successfully, the relay in the receiver will again be activated for a short period. Disconnect the controller from the electric power supply. Close and secure the cover of the switch box. Gap with "Learn" button Note: Atmospheric interference can affect the radio remote control. Such interference results when electrical and electronic equipment is used and, particularly, when such equipment is switched on and off. Interference must be expected in closely built industrial and residential areas. Even stronger interference often results from overhead power lines, electric power stations, transformer stations, industrial plants and electronic data processing systems. The interference and the related reduction in the effective operating range also depend on the weather and may vary from day to day. Construction work in the vicinity can also change the amount of interference. 6 Maintenance of the Radio Remote Control You can check the battery and the function of the transmitter by pressing the button. If the battery is exhausted or the transmitter is defective, the LED will not light when the button is pressed. The transmitter is normally equipped with a 9 V dry battery. This battery must be replaced every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often the transmitter is used. The controller and the receiver require no maintenance.
