As part of the Tribute to 8-year-old Laney, who passed away on Christmas after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a blood drive was held in January. THE BLOOD CENTER RECENTLY LAUNCHED ITS NEWLY REDESIGNED WEBSITE AT GIVEAPINT.ORG. The updated website, created and hosted by Launch DM, a Wyomissing-based, industry-leading new media studio, features improved navigation for easy access to information on donating blood, planning a blood drive, providing financial support, or becoming a volunteer. “Miller-Keystone Blood Center was excited to work with Launch DM on this project,” says Sean TInney, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Miller-Keystone Blood Center. “We hope that our visitors find the updated site to be more appealing and interactive, as well as easier to navigate, for a more user-friendly experience.” n Top Ten Excuses for Not Donating Blood Continuing with this issue, we highlight some of the reasons people give for not donating blood. A continuous blood supply is essential to the health and welfare of our community. Sharing your good health by donating blood provides a gift to the recipient – the opportunity for extended life. Is there anything more special than a chance for tomorrow? Rusty’s Story “I am proud to be both a donor and an employee of MillerKeystone Blood Center. I always knew All equipment used in the blood donation process is sterile and disposable (used only once), and the needle and related equipment is disposed of in a specially marked biohazard container immediately following the donation. Therefore, there is no chance of contracting AIDS or any other disease by donating blood. I was helping, but that call really hit home, and I knew I needed to continue donating. Since joining the Blood Center as an employee, I see how quickly we can go through the EXCUSE #5 “They wouldn’t want my blood because of the illnesses I’ve had.” During the actual donation process, all donors are given a mini-medical checkup, and asked a series of questions to ensure that they are eligible to donate for our community blood supply. Thomas, Director of Development. “Each year, we are faced with critical, ongoing needs, including the need to recruit new and additional blood donors. The ultimate goal of the ‘My Blood Your Blood’ program is to inspire our community’s youth to help others by giving ‘the gift of life.’ If we educate students about the importance of donating blood today, we can make sure it’s on the shelf tomorrow. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, and approximately every 10 seconds, someone is receiving a blood transfusion.” Funded by corporations and foundations such as the Richard E. Gasser Fund and the Erwin J. and Gertrude K. Neusch Fund, the “My Blood Your Blood” educational science program is presented by blood center staff and certified phlebotomists at no cost to schools and community youth groups in the region served by Miller-Keystone. “The Blood Center is extremely grateful to the Richard E. Gasser Fund and the Erwin J. and Gertrude K. Neusch Fund for their goodwill and support of our mission,” Ms. Thomas concludes. “Their generosity illustrates an understanding of the necessity of a safe and constant stream of red blood cells, platelets and plasma to support premature infants, accident victims, cancer patients, and others in need of lifesaving blood transfusions at our regional hospitals.” S AV E T H E D AT E !
