Africa right now; and the second gives a birdseye view of the latest tourism economics and
trends, setting the stage for the third part, a conversation with Africa’s tourism ministers.
Part I: What’s Happening in Business in Africa Right Now (20 minutes)
While most of the world is bouncing back from the recent economic downturn,
economists, business leaders and the media are all talking about Africa – they’re
saying, “Africa is booming.” So, what’s happening in business in Africa right now?

Spotlight: Building the Capacity for Inclusive Tourism Growth in Africa
Location: Mountain Hotel Conference Hall
Growth in tourism goes hand-in-hand with growth in hotels, restaurants and retail outlets,
as well as transportation and entertainment. This creates new jobs, services and products.
In this way, training in the tourism industry and strengthening the tourism value chain can
open the door for including marginal segments of the population, such as women, rural
populations and youth in local, national and regional economies. This spotlight explores
why tourism, if managed properly, has the potential to improve lives and support
equitable growth on all levels.
Amini Kajunju, President & CEO, The Africa-America Institute (AAI), USA
2:30 pm – 3:00 pm
Panel: Youth and Tourism: Expanding Economic Opportunities for Youth
According to the African Development Bank (AfDB), Africa is the world’s youngest
continent with close to 70% of its population aged below 25. Youth constitute 37% of the
total labor force, but make up about 60% of total unemployment. If Africa continues to
invest in education and training to develop the potential of its youth, it can turn this
challenge into an opportunity, particularly when skills development goes hand in hand
with incentives to employ them. This spotlight session features some positive examples of
how tourism can create economic opportunities for youth across the continent.

Panel: Africa beyond Sea & Safari: Diversifying Tourism Products
Location: Mountain Hotel Conference Hall
As the tourism industry expands across Africa, innovative strategies are needed to attract
visitors to different areas and to capture their attention in non-peak seasons. By
diversifying tourism products to include new areas of growth and expansion, niche tourism
offers an important opportunity for product development and differentiation. The
examples presented in this panel reveal the wide range of product offerings and some
interesting new trends.
