After last year’s sell out Magna Carta Conference we are pleased to present this year’s Norman Conquest Anniversary Conference 1066 & All That! This year marks 950 years since the Battle of Hastings, so we will be hosting an entertaining event at the Civic Centre on Friday 16th September. There will be a full day of informative seminars by some of the country’s leading historians. Conference 9.30am – 4.30pm (Doors open at 9am) SPEAKERS • Dr Ryan Lavelle • Dr Matt Bennett • Dr Sean McGlynn • Dr Michael Costen • Dr Katherine Weikert • Andy Milroy Speakers Dr RYAN LAVELLE is Reader in Early Medieval History at the University of Winchester and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is author of Alfred’s Wars: Sources and Interpretations of Anglo-Saxon Warfare in the Viking Age (2010), Royal Estates in Anglo-Saxon Wessex: Land, Politics and Family Strategies (2007), Aethelred II: King of the English, 978 – 1016 (2008) and co-editor of Danes in Wessex: the Scandinavian Impact on Southern England, c. 800 – 1100 (2015). He is historical advisor to BBC’s hit series The Last Kingdom. Dr SEAN McGLYNN is Lecturer in History for Plymouth University’s History, Heritage and Archaeology Degree Programme at Strode College and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is author of By Sword and Fire: Cruelty and Atrocity in Medieval Warfare (2008); Blood Cries Afar: The Forgotten Invasion of England, 1216 (2011), Kill Them All: Cathars and Carnage in the Albigensian Crusade (2015) and, most recently, Medieval Generals (2016). Dr MICHAEL COSTEN is a Research Fellow at the University of Bristol and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has written many learned articles on medieval archaeology and history and is author of Romanesque Churches of the Loire and Western France (2000), Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade (1997) and Anglo-Saxon Somerset (2011). ANDY MILROY is an author, local historian and researcher who has given numerous presentations in Wiltshire on Henry de Bohun and his role, both nationally as a Magna Carta Enforcer, but also locally in developing Trowbridge. He has a long standing background as an author. He has more recently researched the history of the powerful de Bohun family in depth. He is the author of Henry de Bohun, Trowbridge Magna Carta Baron (2015). Dr MATTHEW BENNETT is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and was Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, until his retirement in 2014. He is a leading authority on medieval warfare, on which he has written many learned articles. As well as editing a number of important works on medieval warfare, he is author of Agincourt 1415: Triumph Against the Odds (1991) and Campaigns of the Norman Conquest (2001). Dr KATHERINE WEIKERT is Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Winchester and is Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has a special interest in medieval gender history and Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman social history and archaeology. She is author of the forthcoming Gender, Authority and Space in the Central Middle Ages, c. 900 – 1200. Programme How to book Doors open at 9.00am and Conference begins at 9.30am.
