from the
President
Dear Friends of Louisburg College,
On December 10, 2007, the
Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS) Commission on
Colleges notified Louisburg College
that the school has been placed on
warning for six months, based on the SACS accreditation standard on financial stability. In the same meeting, Louisburg College
was notified that the school’s assessment and institutional effectiveness plan was fully approved.
The warning designation was extended to Louisburg College as an opportunity to strengthen the school’s financial condition
with improved budgeting, increased revenues, and major gifts.
I am pleased that the board of trustees is fully engaged in the process to strengthen the finances of the school. Also, I am
thankful that SACS has committed to working with the school and providing guidance on how to gain compliance with financial
stability standards. We are on the right path to increase our revenues, reduce our expenditures, maintain quality, and assure a
bright future for this historic college. The SACS warning has presented the College with an opportunity to restore the health of
our institution. The coming months are a time for revitalization and restoration.
As many of you may know, the College recently made reductions in personnel and operating budgets. The loss of college family
was a painful step in strengthening our financial stability; however, it was necessary as we work to meet the directives presented by
SACS.
Please be aware that Louisburg College remains fully accredited and offers all students a dependable opportunity to graduate
and transfer to the senior college or university of their choice.
For 221 years, we have remained committed to the academic success of our students. Today, that tradition is alive and well.
The first time I was given the opportunity to address the College family, I spoke of the bright future that I saw for Louisburg.
I remain confident that the unique mission, rich history, dedicated faculty and staff, wonderful students, committed trustees,
treasured alumni and generous donors have paved the way for an institution that is prepared to secure its place in today’s academic
world.
To once again quote Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, “The great thing in this world is not so much where you
stand, as in what direction you are moving.”
I am convinced that the College is moving in the right direction, and we will continue to move forward with greater efficiency
and fiscal health in the months and years ahead.
May God richly bless Louisburg College - the family and wonderful supporters.

LC Now an e2Campus
Pat Williams, senior vice president of the
Orlando Magic and popular motivational
speaker, addressed Louisburg College students
at the start of the academic year.
Louisburg College Vice President for
Institutional Effectiveness Dr. Morris Wray is
pleased that Williams’ visit fell on the first day
of the new semester.
“Perhaps the most important day on a
college campus is the first day of classes,
because the critical choice each college student
makes that day, whether accidentally or
intentionally, often determines the outcomes
both of their college experience and their life
beyond college,” Wray said. “Pat Williams’
visit constitutes a major gift to Louisburg
College and her students. He is among the
world’s most highly regarded motivational
speakers.”
The event, part of this year’s new student
orientation, was hosted by the Gamma
Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at
Louisburg College.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international
honor society for two-year colleges. On three
occasions since 2003, the Gamma Upsilon
Beginning in January 2008, Louisburg
College will offer students and parents the
option of enrolling in a campus emergency
notification system through e2Campus.
This system will send emergency
notification via text message to a student’s
registered mobile phone. Students will also
continue to receive timely warnings via
campus e-mail.
This system gives Louisburg College
the capability to quickly alert students to
potentially threatening situations on campus.
An added bonus to the e2Campus system
will be the ability to send students updates
from all areas of campus life. Students can
opt to receive announcements about athletic
events, campus activities, intramurals, and
more.

Williams Motivates Campus

chapter at Louisburg College has received
the Pinnacle Gold Award, recognizing that
Gamma Upsilon at Louisburg College is
among the fastest growing PTK chapters
world-wide.
Williams’ message, “A Champion Under
Construction,” outlined ten steps to success.
After the program, students were given the
opportunity to meet and greet with Williams
during a lunch on campus.
Williams is an alumnus of Wake Forest
University and a member of the Wake Forest
Sports Hall of Fame.
Pat and his wife, Ruth, are also the
parents of 19 children, including 14 adopted
from four nations.
PTK Transfers
Phi Theta Kappa graduates of Louisburg
College will automatically be eligible for Phi
Theta Kappa Scholarship Awards from Peace
College. These students who transfer to Peace
will receive a minimum scholarship of $8,000.

The money was given to support science
programs at the College.
Pump Boys and Dinettes
Musical theatre returns to Louisburg
College this spring. Set in the rural
south, Pump Boys and Dinettes follows
the lives of employees at a gas station/
diner. The show opened on Broadway
in 1982, and it was a Tony nominee for
best musical.

Wray Writes Lead Article for
National Publication
The October
25 edition of
Enrollment
Leadership,
a newsletter
for college
and university
presidents
published monthly
by the National
Research Center for College and University
Admissions, features an article on transfer
student recruitment by Morris Wray, former
vice president for institutional effectiveness at
Louisburg College.
Dr. Wray wrote the lead article at the
request of NRCCUA leadership. According to
Don Munce, president of NRCCUA, the 36
year old organization exists to assist colleges
and universities that seek to maximize their
enrollment opportunities. Wray was chosen by
NRCCUA to write this article because of
his success in enrollment management at both
two-year colleges and at senior colleges and
universities.
Specifically, Wray was asked to help
presidents of senior colleges and universities
envision systems for maximizing the
enrollment of transfer students.
Wray reminded his readers that nearly half
of all undergraduate students in the United
States are enrolled at public and private twoyear colleges and that many are exceptional
students.
In fact, Wray noted, some 92,000 are
members of Phi Theta Kappa, the
international honor society for two-year
colleges, and have cumulative grade-point
averages of 3.8, or higher.
Wray also noted that all members elected
to the USA Today Academic All-America
Team for the two-year college are members of
Phi Theta Kappa. In addition, the academic
leaders among students at senior colleges and
universities are often Phi Theta Kappa
transfers.
In his article, Wray reminded senior college
and university presidents that the most
important question for transfer students,
whether or not they are members of Phi Theta

The College’s Traveling Exhibition Series
continues this spring.
Interior Landscapes will be on display
March 10 – April 18, 2008. Podris will
participate in a Reception/Artist’s Slide Talk on
March 10, 2008 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium.
To celebrate the addition of six new
acquisitions to the College’s permanent
art collection, Louisburg hosted a
“reopening” of the Faulkner Gallery
in November.
The Fall 2007 Student Art Show
was held on Thursday, November
29 in the Auditorium. The show offered
a selection of works created by Louisburg
College students in the Foundation Drawing
and Ceramics/Pottery classes.
All exhibits are free and open to the public.
The Traveling Exhibition Gallery is located
on the north side of the Louisburg College
Auditorium. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to
5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more

Louisburg College recently
announced two new vice presidential
appointments.
Belinda Faulkner accepted the
position of vice president for finance
at Louisburg College. Faulkner has 15
years of experience as the chief financial
officer of a private college. Formerly the
chief financial officer at North Carolina
Wesleyan College, she brings a wealth
of expertise and analytical skill to the
position.
Louisburg College is thankful for
the excellent support rendered by C.L.
Gobble and Sharon Moore during the
transition period.
In addition, Tracey Sala has accepted
the position of vice president for
enrollment management at Louisburg
College. Sala has more than seven years of
experience in enrollment management at
Iowa Central Community College in Fort
Dodge, Iowa. She served four years as an
administrator in enrollment services.
Sala has experience and proven skill
in the areas of student recruitment,
admissions, and enrollment planning.
The College is also thankful for the
hard work of interim Vice President Ernie
Rushing and the enrollment team
for their support during the transition
period.
Coffee Bar
The College made arrangements with
Chartwells Dining to install a coffee bar
in Cecil W. Robbins Library. The coffee bar
is located in the northwest corner of the first
floor. The new space began serving coffee in
January.

Kappa, relates to general education
requirements.
At some institutions, transfer students
who have completed the associate’s degree
are considered to have completed the senior
institution’s graduation requirements; at
others, students with associate degrees
still must complete the additional general
education requirements, if any, of the
senior institution. Wray emphasized that
public institutions often have more flexible
regulations than private institutions in this
area and the differences often give public
institutions the advantage with regard to
transfer student recruitment.
He also emphasized that an institution’s
position on this issue will often determine
whether they win transfer students. For
freshmen, he writes, “such differences are
inconsequential; for transfers, they are so
significant that they often affect a student’s
decision to enroll at the preferred senior
institution.”
Wray also encouraged senior institutions to
complete block transfer agreements with with
two-year colleges that assure that students
who complete a parallel degree program (e.g.,
criminal justice, education, athletic training)
at a two-year college will have completed
mandatory freshman and sophomore program
requirements requisite to transfer.
For senior institutions that wish to enroll
transfer students, a primary goal should be to
assure that transfers with associate’s degrees
can complete typical four-year and five-year
degree programs on time.
During a 40-year career in higher
education, Wray has held administrative
positions at six different colleges and
universities, including Vanderbilt University
where he directed the office of transfer
admissions, taught higher education
administration, and advised doctoral students.
During his career, Wray also directed the
office of schools, colleges and universities at
the General Board of Higher Education and
Ministry of The United Methodist Church
where his portfolio included international
education. He was actively involved in the
creation of two successful Methodist-related
universities, including Africa University and
Universidad Centro Educativo LatinoAmericano in Rosario, Argentina.
Enrollment growth at both institutions is
significant; in fact, enrollment at UCEL has
grown from 15 students to 2500 in 17 years.

An Unparalled Event in
Louisburg College Athletic History
Eight individuals made Louisburg College history this fall. On September 28, 2007, seven
men and one woman were named to the inaugural class of the Louisburg College Athletic Hall of Fame.
As a group, they are coaches, players, teachers and Hurricane Athletic supporters. Dedicated to Louisburg
College athletics, their work has inspired generations of students and the community at large. Today,
Louisburg boasts a tradition of success among many of its sports programs - a tradition that the inaugural
class helped to build, cultivate and preserve.

Holton Renovations
In an effort to restore the beauty of Holton Gymnasium,
alumnus and trustee Roger Taylor led a campaign to renovate
the historic building. The lobby was gutted and cleared to
make room for new flooring, lighting, and lighted-glass trophy
cases. The cases feature photographs and plaques honoring the
members of the Louisburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. The
display area has been appropriately named the Roger G. and
Gaile D. Taylor Hall of Fame. The concession stand was also
removed and rebuilt inside the gymnasium.
Other new updates inside the gym include the J. Enid Drake
Hurricane Club facility, which features new seating and a
special hospitality suite. Trustee Ely Perry recently donated
theater-style chairs for the student section in the balcony of
the gym. In addition, trustee and alumnus W. Seymour Holt
made a pledge that will help with the funding of new bleachers
to upgrade the general seating area. The exterior of the gym
also received new landscaping. The renovated outdoor space
features the Ruth Cooke Gardens in honor of the longtime
Louisburg College professor and coach.

As part of the planned renovations for the boardroom, parlor and
lobby areas of Main Building, board of trustee members have
completed renovations to the boardroom. The project was led
by trustee Sue Robertson. Trustees gave gifts for the purchase of
new chairs for the boardroom, and trustee and alumnus Roger
Taylor helped complete the project inside the conference room
by providing a new cherry table and other amenities.
To complete renovations to the lobby and parlor area, the project
needs to raise an additional $50,000. Trustee members Roddy
Jones and W. Seymour Holt pledged $25,000 of the $50,000
goal. Board members, friends and alumni are encouraged to give
to the project. Renovations to the lobby and parlor areas of Main
Building will provide a welcoming environment to visitors and
prospective students.

The first thing you hear is the music. The feng shui sound is
inviting - an interesting hybrid of relaxation and energy. The music
travels outside through a door casually propped open with a rock. Inside
is a visual repository. A congestion of color and offbeat use of everyday objects
meet on the walls. Nature presents itself in whimsical forms, faded artwork shows its age...

when standing on the precipice that great acts are achieved. It is of
and busy clutter tells you that the room
is alive. A young man sits at a table. He
is transfixed by his work and oblivious
to the presence of an outsider. Couches,
long past their prime, face each other and
ask for conversation.
Movement from a back room catches
your eye. The space pulls you in, and
curiosity and the need to be inspired
move you forward. The smell of clay is
familiar. It is a reminder of a time that
begged for imagination. The students
are engaged, and they smile and laugh
as they work – some triumphantly, some
less victoriously.
It’s not right away that you notice
the professor. When you spot him, he is
leaning over a table deep in conversation.
“You know what would be cool?” he
asks the student. “If you swirled the top
of it, you’d have this really interesting
shape.”
The student’s wide grin and approving
nod indicate the idea is well-received.
This world is the creation of Louisburg
College art professor Will Hinton.
Hinton has taught at the College for 24
years.
One may question the sanity of a man
who, after earning his master’s in fine
arts from the prestigious art program
at Alfred University, passed on the
opportunity to run a pottery business
on the Fiji islands. He instead accepted
a position as lead designer for a handmade ceramic tile business in New Jersey.
In the two years that followed, Hinton
applied for teaching jobs at colleges and
universities, and he eventually found his
way to Louisburg College.
“I believe that being visually literate
is a vital component of the liberal arts
experience which Louisburg College
offers. I trust the academic freedom I
have in the classes I teach. After 24 years,
I still find this to be an exciting, engaging
environment in which to work each day,”
Hinton said.
For 50 semesters, he has challenged,
mentored and inspired. He is a favorite
among students, fondly remembered by
alumni, and respected by his colleagues.
Win Neagle is chair of the division of
humanities at Louisburg College.
Having worked with Hinton for many
years, he has witnessed his co-worker’s
ability to engage students.
“Will Hinton is one part genius, one
part saint, and one part madman stuffed
into an offensive lineman’s body,” Neagle
said. “For a student, he is a life-changing
experience waiting to happen. His
commitment to his profession and the
young people he teaches is extraordinary
and touching.”
Hinton recently addressed students,
faculty and staff as the keynote speaker at
spring convocation. His talk focused on
faith.
He took the stage with force,
beginning his address by unabashedly
singing the theme song to the HBO
television series The Wire. Eyes closed, the
singing professor garnered the attention
of his audience. He urged students to
recognize that God is both imminently
and transcendentally present in our lives,
that faith can be eclectic and pluralistic,
and that it is important to have enough
courage in your faith to ask the difficult
questions. He encouraged students to be

ften when standing on the precipice that great acts are achieved. It

he inspired listeners with personal
reflections about faith.
“I am led by faith to let God be the
light in which I see the world around me.
My conception of being created in the
image of God has nothing whatsoever to
do with being a white, male, middle class
American. To be created in the image
of God, for me, refers to forgiveness,
humility and faith. The only way I can
wrap my head around this idea of faith
is to live a life of knowledge, love and
acceptance - not one of perception,
ego and achievement,” Hinton told the
crowd.
It is perhaps this concept of love and
acceptance that has afforded Hinton a
successful career in higher education and he is in good company. The College
has been fortunate to have many talented
and dedicated professors throughout
its history; and, for an institution
that promotes its proud tradition of
transforming lives, faculty members like
Hinton are fundamental to this mission.
His classroom encourages students to
uncover places deep inside themselves
as they travel through their academic
journeys. He is a reflection of the
institution’s strong academic tradition
and the opportunities the College
continues to provide for students today.
Looking Ahead
In 2007, the College celebrated its
220th birthday. Founders’ Day was held
in February, and festivities included the
placing of a commemorative wreath on
the gravesite of Matthew Dickinson,
the first preceptor of the Franklin Male
Academy.
The landmark anniversary gives reason
to honor the longevity and historic
significance of the institution, but the
College’s leaders are also laying out plans
for the school’s future.
In his first year at Louisburg, President
Clyburn worked with the board of
trustees to outline strategic goals for the
College.
These initiatives include pursuing
model faith-based programs and
outcomes; rewarding quality faculty and
establishing new academic programs
and services; attracting academically
prepared students and achieving a
balanced student community through
strengthened enrollment standards and
initiatives; articulating the value of the
College to constituencies; addressing
deferred building maintenance with
historic sensitivity; and securing new
funding sources, maintaining financial
stability, and focusing on value-added
investments.
The board of trustees also approved
three new concepts to begin with the
2008-2009 academic year. These include
the implementation of a tobacco-free
campus, a student dress code, and
required chapel and assembly. The
new policies will be finalized following
student, staff and faculty input and are
subject to trustee review.
Amid challenges to strengthen the
financial stability of the College, Clyburn
has put the institution on a path that he
believes will increase revenues, reduce
expenditures, maintain quality, and
assure a bright future for the historic
college.
“I am convinced that the College is
moving in the right direction, and we
will continue to move forward with
greater efficiency and fiscal health in
the months and years ahead,” Clyburn
said. “The enduring school must have
a clearly articulated mission and vision.
We have both. Our vision statement is
that Louisburg College will be the model
church-related school that prepares
students for life and service.”

will enable you to gain confidence in
yourself. As a faculty member, I make
that commitment to you,” he said. “Each
of you brings different learning tools
to the table. We will help you sharpen
these tools. We will help you find your
individual voice.”
The Power of Now
In an increasingly competitive market,
colleges and universities vie for the
attention of savvy student consumers.
It’s an aggressive business where wealth
often seems to dominate. Still, Louisburg
College endures.
For 221 years, the College has carried
out its mission of providing students
with a supportive and nurturing
community that is rooted in faith and
invites young men and women to learn
and grow.
Perhaps, it is people that perpetuate
the College’s endurance. The school is
rich with professors who inspire students
to learn, coaches who motivate their
players, students who are engaged in
the academic process, and alumni and
friends who give back.
In the years ahead, the College will
continue to make transformations of its
own in order to secure its place in today’s
academic world.
It is often when standing on the
precipice that great acts are achieved.
There is a phrase that is frequently
repeated by Louisburg College alumni.
I would not be where I am today if it were
not for Louisburg College. These words
have been uttered by doctors, teachers,
attorneys, ministers and CEOs. While
they reminisce about championship
games, parties and friends, they also
remember that Louisburg College
provided them with opportunity.
Hinton has a talk that he gives
to prospective college students. The
presentation is about transition, reaching
into the unknown, and growing as a
community.
He gives students large, numbered
tiles, and the students work together to
arrange them in a giant square on the
floor. Once the task is completed, the
tiles are turned over and an entirely new
image is revealed.
“Metacognition is a fancy word that
can mean to change what you know,” he
tells students. He assures them that the
“renaissance state of mind” is alive and
well at Louisburg.

Peer out a window in Main Building
today, and you’ll likely see a student
strolling along chatting on a cell phone,
a group of students piling out of an
SUV, or a jogger listening to an i-pod.
Now, picture this scene.
Replace the cell phone user with a
Union soldier carrying a Colt revolver.
Instead of students climbing from
an SUV, picture four to five hundred
soldiers in tents across the campus. In
place of the jogger and his i-pod, an
army surgeon dispensing morphine and
quinine.
Constructed in 1857, the view
from the windows of Main Building
has changed many times over the last
150 years; however, one thing holds
true. The building’s occupants have
consistently sought the same thing:
enlightenment through education. It’s
interesting to imagine the different
scenes Louisburg College students have
watched unfold from their dorm
rooms. Today, the United Methodist
Men want to change the way the school
views its future – literally.
Windows for Education is a campaign sponsored by the Raleigh District of The United Methodist Men. The campaign seeks to replace 411 windows across
campus, many of which are in disrepair.
President Emeritus Dr. Reginald Ponder is excited about the campaign and the college’s relationship with the United Methodist Men.
“The four buildings that will receive the new windows provide the historic core of the Louisburg College campus and need these vital improvements,” Ponder
said. “For nearly forty years, the Raleigh District United Methodist Men have held their annual retreat on the campus of Louisburg College. These men are fully
committed to the mission of Louisburg College, and they have supported that mission through providing scholarships.”
In addition to endowed scholarships, the Raleigh District generously gave to Louisburg College in the 1980s by providing substantial funding for the
construction of Benson Chapel on campus.
The organization is asking for tax-deductible donations to replace windows in historic campus buildings. A new window may be given in honor or memory of
a person, class, church or business. A plaque will be prepared for each new window.
“The Windows for Education project is a continuation of the important partnership between Louisburg College and the Raleigh District United Methodist
Men,” Ponder said.
The windows will be new, as will be the scenes that take place outside them. One can only imagine what future Louisburg College students will peer out their
windows and see in years to come.

His name is well recognized
among Louisburg College
alumni, and now that name will
be permanently attached to a
prestigious award at the college.
The Robert A. Butler Award will
be given to one student every year
in honor of the longtime Louisburg
College professor.
Butler was recognized last spring
at Awards Day on April 24 when it
was announced that the social and
behavioral sciences award was to be
named in his honor.
Bob, as he prefers to be called,
has been teaching at the College
since 1962. A high school delegate
to Boy’s State, Bob excelled in
athletics as a youth, winning
awards in football and tennis. He
was offered a football scholarship
to Virginia Tech, but chose to
attend UNC-Chapel Hill, where he
graduated in 1958.
From 1958-1959 he attended
Duke Divinity School, where
professor Sid Stafford was his
roommate, and Dr. Reginald
Ponder lived down the hall.
Butler then transferred to
Garrett Theological Seminary
at Northwestern University. He
enjoyed preaching and working
with young people, and so he
returned to Duke on a Ford
Foundation Fellowship and earned
a master’s degree in English. During
that year, he became friends with
Dr. Allen Norris, who was also on
a Ford Fellowship and would later
become president of Louisburg
College.
Bob taught English his first
three years, and then returned to
UNC for a master’s in sociology. In
1970, the college hosted a seminar
on the “systems approach,” and
Butler used this method to write a
basic sociology
text that was
published
by New
York Times’
Cambridge
Book
Company. It
was adopted
in all 50
states and
five foreign
countries.
In 1978, McGraw-Hill published
Bob’s English handbook, which also
utilized “systems approach” principles.
Soon after the publication of his
sociology text, Butler was named one of
the outstanding educators of America,
and his biography appeared in the
Dictionary of International Biography in
London, England.
Butler’s family made a surprise visit
to the college for Awards Day. Bob’s
daughter Martha, son Tony, and brother
Dr. Lindley Butler joined Bob on stage
as he accepted the award. Lindley Butler
also taught at Louisburg College in the
1960’s.
Bob enjoys classical music, big band
compositions, opera, ballet and golf.
He loves Louisburg College and the
thousands of students whose lives he has
touched.

On November 9, Dr. J. Michael Clyburn was inaugurated as Louisburg College’s
26th President. The late morning ceremony followed a week of inaugural events. A
luncheon was held on campus following the inaugural ceremony. The week’s events
included an inaugural chapel service, an Emily Dickinson presentation in the historic
Academy Building, a student social, a concert with Grammy winner Clint Black, and a
pre-concert reception.
Dr. John Cameron, chairman of the Louisburg College Board of Trustees, presided
over the ceremony. Speakers and members of the platform party included Rep.
Lucy Allen; Lynn Buffaloe, chair of The Franklin County Board of Commissioners;
Mayor Karl Pernell; Rev. Marian Edwards, retired bishop of The United Methodist
Church; Rev. Jim Bell, president of the Louisburg College Alumni Association; Tyrone
Washington, chair of the faculty senate; Sharon Moore, director of Title III; Waylon
Weidrick, president of the Student Government Association; Dr. Hope Williams,
president of North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities; Dr. Rodney Foth,
executive vice president and vice president for academic life; and Rev. Earl Dulaney,
pastor of Louisburg United Methodist Church.
Clyburn, who has dedicated his life to private higher education, has served as
faculty member and division chair at Trevecca Nazarene University, dean of student
development at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, vice president for academic affairs
and dean of the school of arts and sciences at Spring Arbor University, and provost
at Lincoln Memorial University. Clyburn’s higher education experience also includes
facilitating national, regional and professional accreditation; presenting and publishing
for professional organizations; and consulting on campus community enhancement,
student learning, educational leadership, organizational development, and institutional
advancement.

1930
Mary Waring McLean celebrated her 95th
birthday on July 7, 2007 at Wesley Pines
Retirement and Nursing Community in
Lumberton, NC.
1938
Marie Braswell, of Rocky Mount, NC,
spent a wonderful Christmas with her great
grandchildren. They are triplets, two boys
and a girl, and were five years old on
Christmas day.
1940
W. Glenn Beasley, of Charlotte, NC, was
a member of a mission building team
that traveled to Esparza, Costa Rica and
Maunabo, Puerto Rico.
Mae Edla Shaw, of Mebane, NC, stays active
with various church committees and greatly
enjoys directing weddings. Her love for
Louisburg College remains steadfast.
Mavis McGowan Alder, of Greenville, NC,
entered Louisburg College at the age of
15. She was the oldest of seven children
and had never been away from home. She
remembers with fondness all of the faculty
who taught her. Mavis went on to receive
her master’s degree from ECU and taught in
the demonstration school on campus. She
also taught at the Wahl-Coates School near
campus. At 86, Mavis continues to live
independently and enjoys spending time with
friends.

Richard L. Cannon, Jr. ’52, of Vanceboro,
NC, is completing his second year as
president of the Craven County Retired
School Personnel. He retired in 1996 after
37 years with the Craven County Board of
Education, West Craven High School.
Alan Saunders of Richmond, VA and his wife,
Cathy, are now empty nesters. Their oldest
daughter, Elizabeth, graduated from the
Medical College of Virginia where she
is now employed. Their youngest daughter,
Lauren, is studying elementary education at
Longwood University.
1966
Patricia Turner Barbour, of Montross, VA,
retired from Goochland County Schools (VA)
after 33 years of teaching. She is now teaching
at a small private school in northern VA.
James Chandler IV, of Wilmington, NC,
and his wife, Mary Jo, welcomed two more
grandchildren this year. Mimi Jane was born
in August and Evelyn Kathleen in November.
They now have six grandchildren.

Becky Forrest Hanner and her husband, Ron,
have recently retired and now live at Reynolds
Plantation at Lake Oconee in Greensboro,
Georgia.
1969
Shirley Alexander Gaylord has made her
home in central Florida for the past 12 years.
She loves golfing with her friends and is a
member of a wonderful Methodist Church.
She writes that, “LC is always close in my
heart.”
1970
Willis Gupton has finally retired after 50
years in the trust management profession,
including the practice of estate law and
teaching in the Campbell University trust
program. Willis and his wife, Marguerite, live
in Buies Creek where they enjoy activities at
Campbell.

Betty Worrell Darden, of Newsoms, VA,
stays busy with church and the local Ruritan
Club. She is a substitute teacher with the area
public schools and enjoys keeping up with the
activities of her five grandchildren who all live
in North Carolina.
James (Jim) Floyd Ammons, of Fayetteville,
NC, was named Scout Master of the Year
by the Boys Scouts of America, Kia Kima
District.
1967
Al Peoples of Louisburg was recently honored
by being named the 2007 Environmental
Health Supervisor of the Year by the
NC Environmental Health Supervisors
Association. Al transferred from LC to East
Carolina University where he received his BS/
BA degree from the ECU School of Business.
He has worked for the Franklin County
Health Dept. for just over 25 years. Al and
his wife, Marla, have twin daughters, Amanda
and Sarah, who are almost 17 years old.
Claude Stainback Sharpe, of Hopewell, VA,
writes that her great memories of Louisburg
College happily linger since her graduation
day. “I will always be grateful for the two
years of blessings beyond measure.”
1975
Tricia Anne Miller Nelson lives in North
Miami Beach, FL. She is the communications
academy lead teacher and chairperson of
the fine arts department at North Miami
Beach Senior High School. Tricia is married
to Jeffrey Miller and they have two children,
John Howland, 14, and Megan Blair, 12.
Joseph Gallo, of Emerson, NJ, retired from
the federal government in May 2006. He
now works as a consultant for the federal
government in forfeiture programs.
1978
Michael Chappell, of Wake Forest, NC, is
principal of Jones Dairy Elementary School
in Wake Forest. Prior to this position, he was
the senior director of staffing and operations
in the human resources department for the
Wake County Public School System.
Rick Furr has recently taken a new position
with the professional baseball team, the
Florida Marlins, as the VP of Broadcast Sales.
Previous to this position he was in marketing
for the Miami Heat.
1983
Erin Laughter Philpy, of Mechanicsville,
VA, graduated from UNC-Wilmington in
1986. Erin and her husband, Brooke, have
two sons, Lawson and Camden. She is a
referral coordinator with Family Physicians in
Richmond, VA.
1985
Allen Dunlap Copeland spent 10 years in
Spain at the Barcelona School of Language.
1987
Warren Harris continued on to North
Carolina State University and graduated with
a BA in political science in 1990. He married
Karen Elrod in 1991. They have two children,
Matthew and Catherine. Warren is employed
by Bank of America as a senior mortgage
specialist in the Greensboro regional office.
1996
Quandra Vakia Smith-Giles married on
August 11, 2007. She graduated in May
with a master’s degree in school counseling.
Quandra and her husband reside in
Greensboro, NC.
1997
Alumna Stephanie Buchanan Tolbert and her
husband, former Louisburg College assistant
football coach Chris, are now the proud
parents of a new baby boy, Jackson Lyle

Tolbert. Jackson was born on December 26
and weighed 7 lbs., 14 ozs. The family now
lives in Williamsburg, VA.

Louisburg College regrets to share news of the
recent death of LC alumnus Fred Fearing. Fearing
was inducted into the Louisburg College Athletic
Hall of Fame in September 2007.
Services for Fearing were held on October 21
at the First United Methodist Church in Elizabeth
City, NC.
President Clyburn shares thoughts about this
treasured alumnus:
Fred Fearing was Louisburg College’s
finest ambassador in Elizabeth City, NC. An
exemplary student athlete, he loved baseball,
and he played it with skill for Louisburg. He
graduated from the college in 1935. Fred was
recently inducted into the Louisburg College
Athletic Hall of Fame. With his old glove and
Louisburg College jersey in hand, Fred was
the oldest member inducted into the inaugural class,
and one of the most beloved. He continued to wear
our school colors through the years, sharing college
publications and his unforgettable smile with people he
met in his cherished role as Elizabeth City ambassador.
As an alumnus and trustee emeritus, he was a
generous contributor to Louisburg College. Fred
wanted students to have the same opportunities that
he had been given, and he made generous donations to
support student scholarships and other campus projects.
I am fortunate to have recently met with Fred.
The ideal host, he volunteered to give me a tour of the
waterfront near his home. During my visit I asked
Fred what made Louisburg College so special to him.
He replied that Louisburg College was where he met
his wonderful wife, Florence. She was also a student
at Louisburg, and Fred remembered exactly when and
where they met on campus.
I am glad that Louisburg College had the
recent opportunity to honor Fred, our
alumnus and friend, at the Athletic Hall of
Fame ceremony. His love for Louisburg College was
always evident. He represented the best of our college
and alumni as he daily portrayed the Christian values
of hospitality, kindness, generosity and compassion.
Fred was the man who kept fond memories alive and
made many people feel at home.
