Becoming Human
Meditations on Christian
Anthropology in Word and Image
john behr
In this book, Fr John Behr offers astounding insights into what it is to be a human
being. Connecting the end—“It is finished”—with the beginning—“Let us make a
human being”—Fr John challenges us to think again about who we are, as male and
female, what we are called to become, and the relation between life and death in this
journey. Presented in a poetic and meditative manner, adorned by images and offset
quotations, this book invites thoughtful contemplation and reorientation.

Doctrine &Teaching of the Orthodox Church
The Typikon Decoded
metropolitan hilarion alfeyev
An Explanation of Byzantine Liturgical Practice
svs press
2013 catalog
This is the second volume of a detailed and systematic exposition
of the Orthodox Church. The purpose of the series is to present
Orthodox Christianity as an integrated theological and liturgical system,
in which all elements are interconnected. Theology finds its expression
and is shaped in liturgical experience and church art—including icons,
singing, and architecture. The services, in their turn, influence the ascetic
practice and the personal piety of each Christian; they shape the moral
and social teaching of the Church as well as its relation to other
Christian confessions, non-Christian religions, and the secular world.
archimandrite job getcha
The Byzantine liturgy, with its beauty, its richness, and its depth,
intrigues, inspires, and fascinates a great number of today’s Christians;
and yet it remains almost inaccessible if not incomprehensible.
The Typikon, the liturgical book that contains the order of the liturgical
celebration, is complex, whence the necessity of “decoding” it both for
recent converts and for “cradle” Orthodox Christians desiring to deepen
their liturgical observance.
This volume examines the sources of Orthodox doctrine in Scripture
and Tradition; its teaching on God in Trinity and Unity, in his essence
and in his energies; on the world and man; on Jesus Christ, the
incarnate God; on the Church, the body of Christ; on the
Theotokos, Mary; and on eschatology, the last things.
That “decoding” is the goal of this book. Developed from courses given
at the Institut Saint-Serge in Paris, it covers the celebration of the offices
throughout the Byzantine liturgical year. The organization and composition of the liturgical offices are first situated in the context of their historical development, and then are analyzed in detail from a practical
point of view.

Poems on Scripture
explorations of the sacred text
through poetry in the syriac tradition
saint gregory of nazianzus
Translated by Brian Dunkle, S.J.
svs press
2013 catalog
Translated by Sebastian Brock
In recent years the poetry of St Gregory of Nazianzus has gained
admirers for its verbal artistry, rich theology, and psychological
insight. Moreover, the Theologian uses verse to engage in extensive
biblical exegesis, a project that can seem absent from his more
famous orations and letters.
Why was Cain’s sacrifice rejected, but Abel’s accepted? How did
Joseph react when he came home and found Mary with child? Questions such as these served as the starting points for St Ephrem and
other poets of the early Syriac tradition in these lively and highly
imaginative poems where they explore the deeper spiritual meanings
of the biblical text with great insight.
NOW AVAILABLE
Written with considerable verve, these narrative poems and
dramatic dialogues offer the modern reader an unusual and refreshing perspective on
some key passages in the Bible. This volume offers new translations of two of the most
powerful Patristic reflections on the work and nature of the Holy Spirit.
Sebastian Brock is Emeritus
Reader in Syriac Studies in
the University of Oxford, and an Emeritus Fellow of Wolfson
College, Oxford. He also translated St Ephrem the Syrian:

This volume translates selections from Gregory’s biblical verse, much of which is appearing
in English for the first time, facing the original Greek. The heart of the collection is a group
of poems that distill the central teachings of the four Gospels in order to train beginners in
an approach to the sacred text according to the model of Gregory himself: as an encounter
with the living Word of God. Other poems included here, while not explicitly exegetical, witness to Gregory’s personalizing approach to meeting Christ in Scripture.

Contemporary Philospohers
and the Ancient Christian Faith
On Christian Doctrine
and Practice
Rico Vitz, editor
The Orthodox Church is one of the largest religious groups in the
world. Yet, it remains an enigma in the West, especially among those
who mistake it for a Greek version of Roman Catholicism or an exotic
mixture of Christianity and eastern religion. Many, however, are coming to recognize the Orthodox Church for what it is: a worldwide community of Christian disciples that has been faithful to the apostolic
command, “stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught.”
Consequently, growing numbers of people are finding their true home
in the Orthodox Church.

Translated by Mark DelCogliano
As a priest and then bishop, Basil of Caesarea devoted sophisticated treatises to the Trinity and to articulating his vision of the
Christian life. In his homilies Basil distilled the best of his moral
and theological teachings into forms readily accessible to his
flock—and now to us. During his lifetime, Basil was recognized
as one of the foremost rhetoricians of his day—
a man supremely skilled in the art of speaking, instructing, persuading, and
delighting at the same time. These rhetorical skills are on full display in the
eleven Moral Homilies translated in this volume, seven of
which appear in English for the first time

Among these converts are dozens of contemporary philosophers.
Some are world-renowned scholars; others are in the earliest stages of
their careers. As a group, they belong neither to any particular philosophical ‘school’ nor to any particular Orthodox jurisdiction. What
they have in common is a desire to enter into an authentic communion with the Living God, and ultimately with all of God’s creation.
Turning East is a collection of autobiographical essays in which 16 of
these scholars describe their journeys to the Orthodox Church, share their reasons for becoming Orthodox Christians, and offer a sense of how their conversions have changed their lives.

saint athanasius
By any standard, this is a classic of Christian theology. Composed by Saint
Athanasius in the fourth century, it expounds with simplicity the theological
vision defended at the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople: that the Son
of God himself became fully human, so that we might become god. Its influence on all Christian theology thereafter, East and West, ensures its place as
one of the few “must read” books for all who want to know more about the
Christian faith.
Metropolitan & Missionary

Antony Bashir was a man of action and vision, opening

growth of today’s Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese.

important period of history in the establishment of the Orthodox faith in America.

Reflections on a
Spiritual Journey
10
• translated by John Behr
11
In the second half of the fourth century the mystery of
the Holy Spirit was the subject of fierce debate. Those
who fought against the Nicene Creed opposed the idea
that the Spirit was God. Even some of those willing to
accept the equality of Father and Son saw the Spirit as more angelic than divine. This volume
offers new translations of two of the most powerful Patristic reflections on the work and
nature of the Holy Spirit.

The Spiritual Teaching of Evagrius of Pontus

Quiet Reflections on Ordination and Communion
lawrence r. farley
Evagrius develops a sophisticated psychology which remains
beneficial to us today. Indeed, this 4th century Desert Father
writes for Christians everywhere: for those in modern deserts—
the city— and for those subject to silent despair. A companion
volume to Dragon’s Wine and Angel’s Bread (SVS Press, 2009).
Introduction by His Grace, Irénée, Bishop of Québec City
Feminism and Tradition deals head-on with the questions and challenges
which feminism presents to the traditional Orthodox Faith, in a way which is
irenic, straightforward, and comprehensive. It examines at length the scriptural foundation for the Church's Faith, as well as its elaboration by the
Fathers, and goes on to offer a model and rationale for continuing to accept
this traditional Faith in our modern age. The book defies the entrenched
polarized positions of former debates, and bids us take another look at these
controversial questions.

New Civilization
john a. mcguckin
How did Christianity build a civilization? This little book is some
form of answer. A book on law and legal thought as it emerged in
formative ages of the Christian past, it asks what the ancient writers
and theorists did with law and legal thought. It is part history, part
philosophy, and more than anything else an introduction to issues
of law and legal adjudication in the Patristic and Byzantine eras.

archpriest Chad hatfield
Father Chad’s meditations, titled “Conversion of the
Heart,” “Life in the Kingdom,” “Extending the Kingdom,”
and “Eucharistic Living,” were delivered to the St Vladimir’s Seminary community over the
course of the two-day lenten retreat. “Very few Orthodox Christians have the blessing that we
have: to retreat from the demands of life during these two days,” began Fr. Chad. “In the words
of St. Paul, this is a time to remember that we are ‘dead to sin and alive in Christ Jesus.’ It is a
time especially to remember that it is too easy in a hallowed place, like the seminary, to
become merely ‘paid professional holy men and women.’ It is a time, instead, to return
to our First Love, to begin again to love God with our whole heart, mind, and soul.
All we need to do so is the desire and the decisiveness to change.”

Orthodox Hymns of Christmas (Mixed Chorus)
The story of St George, embellished from generation to
generation, has a larger-than-life hero at its center. Born in
the third century, St George was a martyr of the early Church
who courageously proclaimed his faith during a period of
persecution. In time, St George became known as a dragon
slayer—the hero of a princess and her townspeople.
david drillock, Director
The St Vladimir’s Seminary Chorale heralds Christ’s Incarnation in these magnificent Englishlanguage selections from the liturgical cycle of the Nativity feast. Christmas carols of various ethnic traditions in foreign languages conclude this glorious collection.
Gold-Medal Recipient of the 2012 Moonbeam Spirit Award for
Preservation; awards are given “for dedication to children’s books and
literacy and for inspired writing, illustrating and publishing.”
Vigil Selections from the All-Night Vigil of the Orthodox Church (Mixed Chorus
& Men’s Choir)
• kevin smith, Director / mark bailey, Associate Director

written by catherine k. contopoulos and

A clumsy scullery boy finds solace in a place known only to him

Euphrosynos, commonly known in Orthodox tradition as “The Cook.”
Silent as a Stone: Mother Maria of Paris and the Trash Can Rescue
written by jim forest and illustrated by dasha pancheshnaya
