Volume 2, No. 4 7th Annual Global Getaways Finds New Home On November 6, Edie Yates and Carol and Steve Boyington opened their homes in Lakeland to host the 7th Annual Global Getaways, Good Shepherd Hospice’s premier fundraising event. This year’s theme, Cruise to the Islands, transported guests to a tropical paradise on the scenic shores of Lake Morton. The adjacent Yates and Boyington properties share a beautifully landscaped courtyard and terrace, which provided the perfect backdrop for the various ports of call where guests could feel as if they were transported to Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and St. Martin. Guests sampled selections from a delectable island menu, created by Prestiage Catering of Lakeland, and enjoyed wine, beer and an open bar featuring orange juice from event sponsor Florida’s Natural. For the first time, Global Getaways also featured exciting charity casino games. Guests could tempt Lady Luck at the blackjack tables or try their hand at a special poker table, hosted by dealer Todd Baylis, son of Edie Yates. The casino games gave guests a Susan Badcock, Tom Conger, Edie Yates, Steve Boyington, Carol Boyington and Phillip Walker fun way to win exceptional prizes, including an Apple iPad donated by Edie Yates, a 42” flat screen TV donated by Badcock Furniture, and a wine and gift certificate basket donated by Columbia Restaurant. Global Getaways co-chairs Phillip and Cappie Walker and Edie Yates greeted guests throughout the evening and later announced that the event had raised more than $20,000 for Good Shepherd Hospice and the Bethany Center for Grieving Children.
