Welcome to Granville!
From the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce
The 2013 Granville Magazine is for anyone who is searching for
a great place to visit, an acclaimed small liberal arts college, or
the perfect place to live, and of course, for those of us who have
already found it. The Granville Area Chamber of Commerce publishes one magazine per year and seeks to include something for
everyone.
Visitors to Granville are immediately taken by the quaint charm of
a modern day village that retains the look and feel of an old New
England town. In fact, there are 120 homes and buildings on the
National Historic register. No wonder I hear visitors say over and
over, “I feel like I’m stepping back in time” and “You are so lucky
to live here!”
We look forward to having you visit Granville! Lodging options
range from historic inns, such as the Buxton, which is the oldest,
continuously operated inn in Ohio, to the iconic Granville Inn,
to the Welsh Hills Inn, a Country Bed and Breakfast, awarded
second in the Top 25 B&B’s and Inns in the World for 2013 by
Trip Advisor. (See the Business Directory for places to stay, shop,
dine, and more.)
Since 1831, Granville has been home to Denison University.
Rated eighth in Kiplinger’s “100 Best Values in Private Colleges,”
Denison’s enrollment is 2,185, with students from 51 U. S. states
and territories and 29 foreign countries, all living on campus.
The student/faculty ratio is 10:1. Says Denison’s President, Dale
Knobel, “Students here can’t fly under the radar. They matter as
individuals and they are prepared for lives of consequence by the
best faculty who know their students’ names and know how to
inspire great things.”
www.granvilleoh.com
Thanks to the Internet, people from all over the United States and
the world (truly) are discovering that Granville is a little piece of
heaven and are making the move to live here. Some who have
spoken to me about their decisions come from large cities and
are ready to give up their hustle bustle lives. They yearned for a
simpler life, a quieter life--a “step back in time.” They found it in
Granville. Some desired a senior-friendly community. They found
it in Granville. Some longed for a small town atmosphere with excellent schools to raise their children. They found it in Granville.
Those of us who live here found Granville in a number of ways.
Some grew up here and have never wanted to leave. Some were
transferred here for a job and have never wanted to leave. Some
moved here to live near family and have never wanted to leave.
Is it because of a college that brings in world-renowned artists
and speakers? Is it the small town charm, the history, the excellent schools, the events?
My guess is it’s all of these things.
We know we’re lucky.
Looking forward to seeing you
in Granville!

The Annual Daffodil Show is enjoyed by people of all ages.
“Spring brings the opening of the Granville Farmers Market.
The Market provides homegrown and homemade foods and fresh
flowers for your home and is a social meeting place.
It brings hundreds of shoppers from central Ohio (in addition to
the townsfolk) to Granville every Saturday morning from midMay to mid-October.”

Some will say that spring comes to Granville like
the blossoming of a sunny yellow daffodil. That
could be true, because for the past 68 years, the
town’s garden club faithfully celebrates spring’s
awakening with its April Daffodil Show,
where hundreds of bobbing trumpet flowers,
plucked from local yards and gardens, lift spirits
and chase away the winter blues. Visitors can
purchase their favorite varieties and pick them
up after the fall’s bulb harvesting.

Spring Events, continued
The Daffodil Show is located at the Bryn Du Mansion, the
estate house just east of the Village. The Village purchased
the property in 2002, but for most of its 148-year history,
Bryn Du was owned by John Suptkin Jones and his
daughter, Sallie Jones Sexton, who built the Granville Inn
and the Granville Golf Course, which was designed by
Donald Ross. The Mansion is now a popular destination
for weddings as well as a venue for a variety of community
events throughout the year.
The ancient rite of spring-cleaning is celebrated in Granville
when residents shed their unneeded items in The Great
Daffodil arrangements accent the natural beauty of the College Town House grounds.
Granville Garage Sale, this year on May 4, offering
bargains galore, many within easy walking distance
throughout the town.
A stimulating spring event, new this year, is the Historical
Town Meeting with Frederick Douglass featuring a reenactment of the abolitionist and orator Frederick Douglass
and others in period costume. The event is Saturday, May
18, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.
As early spring flowers bid farewell to winter, area farmers
and vendors prepare for the long-awaited Granville
Farmers Market, which this year opens Saturday, May 18. Established and sponsored by the Granville Area Chamber
of Commerce (GACC) more than 20 years ago, the market
has grown into one of Ohio’s finest with 60 local farmers,
bakers and food producers setting up their tents on
North Main Street every Saturday through October 19,
underscoring the popularity of local food and friendship. The GACC also sponsors a Tuesday market from 3:00 to
6:00 p.m. in the summer and an indoor Winter Farmers
Market.
The Granville Farmers Market is featured in a new book,
Homegrown: Stories from the Farm, where area farmers
share their personal stories of growing healthy, clean food.

Summer Season Events
Downtown Granville showcases nearly 500 colorful, sleek Porsches at the P2O Show on July 27.
“Granville would surely have been
immortalized by Norman Rockwell had
he ever visited here in the summer.”
Melissa Hartfield, Granville Mayor
Summertime is a lovely season of the year to visit
Granville. Spend a weekend at one of our historic inns or
quaint bed and breakfast locations, stroll along the treelined streets, explore the delightful little shops to find
unique treasures, and enjoy a savory meal at an intimate
restaurant or grab a bite to eat at a casual pub or café.
An early morning view of downtown sidewalks during the week of July 4th.
Other towns may experience the lazy days of summer,
but summertime in Granville is jam-packed with events
commencing on May 27, with the Memorial Day Parade
and ceremonies highlighting the morning, and the free
Concerts on the Green series beginning that evening. The outdoor concerts take place on West Broadway on
Denison University’s Fine Arts Quad. Couples, families,
and individuals of all ages bring picnics and lawn chairs
to relax and enjoy a wide range of live performances
throughout the summer.
The Concert on the Green concert series is a favorite on Sunday evenings
in the summertime.

Summer Events, continued
The four-day-long old-fashioned 4th of July Festival is
yet another signature event. The town’s population swells
during the first week of July as the Inns and Bed and
Breakfast locations fill up with visitors and many former
residents who return to Granville to re-connect with family
and old friends and enjoy the celebration. Broadway is
closed to traffic as the Street Fair comes alive. A bandstand
is erected and bleachers beckon folks to sit a spell and
be entertained by musicians and dancers. Two all-time
favorites of the Granville festivities are the mile-long
Independence Day Parade that can trace its roots to the
1800s and the gala fireworks display.
A summer event new to Granville and on the fast track
to becoming a regional favorite is the Porsche Club of
America’s P2O (Porsches to Ohio) Car Show, held from
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27. Broadway
is lined with nearly 500 Porsches of various years and
models. Travelers from as far away as Canada came to
Granville for the 2012 P2O show.
On Saturday, August 10, nearly 3,000 bike riders in
Pelatonia, the grassroots organization with One Goal to
End Cancer, will pedal through downtown Granville. Riders
in the event vary from cancer survivors to experienced
cyclists, and many ride in honor or memory of someone
who is fighting or has fought the disease. Granville Schools and Denison University begin classes
in August, signaling the end of summer. Street Scenes
Creative Artisans and Merchants Show is Granville’s
last summertime event where artisans from Vermont,
Indiana, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, as well as
Granville merchants, sell exclusive hand-made items at
this annual, outdoor event.

Fall Season Events
“Homegrown, hometown fun. The Bluesfest runs on goodwill,
from the core of volunteers who plan it, to the small army who
don the staff shirts for one exhausting day, to the generous
donors who make it possible to put on this event at no charge
to attendees.”

Tom Carroll, co-founder of the Hot Licks Bluesfest
With a backdrop of bright yellow and orange trees that rival any autumn color in the
northeast, the Hot Licks Bluesfest ushers in Granville’s fall season in a spectacular way
on September 7, 2013.
It started small − just a couple of friends talking about ways to draw people to downtown
Granville, to showcase the community and its businesses. Maybe a musical event? How
about a free music festival? What kind? Hmmm… how about the blues?
In September 2000, this simple idea, executed by a small, dedicated group of music lovers,
gave birth to the optimistically titled First Annual Hot Licks Bluesfest. Thirteen years later,
the group is still tiny, but the festival has grown into a nationally recognized event that’s a
destination for fans and artists alike. What’s the secret of its success?

Great music. Wonderful setting. Free, friendly, fun. It’s
a party that the entire community embraces, one that’s
grown into a tradition that draws family and friends
together from across the country, even internationally.
Start with the music. Aficionados will gasp at the names of
blues legends past and present who have performed: Carey
Bell, James Cotton, Sam Lay, Magic Slim and the Teardrops,
Robert Junior Lockwood, Willie Pooch, Hubert Sumlin,
Tracy Nelson, Wallace Coleman, Gene Walker, Sean Carney,
Tab Benoit. Local and regional favorites are featured, too:
Scott Ainslie, Joanna Connor, Rev. Raven and the ChainSmokin’ Altarboys, Ellie Lee and Blues Fury, Teeny Tucker,
Shaun Booker. But you don’t have to be a blues expert to
be moved by the music. Older couples swing to the beat,
tiny toddlers twirl, and everyone in between delights in
great, live music – free!
Wonderful setting. Close off Broadway between Main and
Prospect streets for the day, put a stage at one end and

the beverage tent at the other, and watch the street fill with
people! Camp chairs appear hours before the music starts.
By midafternoon, the street is full, with fans overflowing
onto the sidewalks and the steps of the post office and
library.
The college event has generated other town activities that
occur on the same weekend. The Antiques Fair on October
5 is one of the oldest fall season events in Granville. Held on
the grounds of the Robbins Hunter Museum, it is a favorite
Granville event and one that brings antique hounds to town.

Winter Season Events
“The first Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour on December 7, 1985, was the
inspiration of long-time Granville resident, Marilyn Anderson, and brought 300
visitors. The popular event has grown to where it now brings way over 10 times
the original number of visitors to town.”
Gloria Hoover, Candlelight Walking Tour publicist, 1985-1986
The first holiday and winter event of the year is Granville’s
Thanksgiving Farmers Market, held on the Saturday
before Thanksgiving so that central Ohioans can make their
Thanksgiving feast extra special with delectable foods fresh
from the farm. Before preparing the feast, many local residents
participate in a Thanksgiving morning tradition, the Turkey Trot.
Event Chair Bruce Westall, owner of the Porch House Bed and
Breakfast, who has coordinated the event since its beginning,
humbly states that he only acted upon the suggestion of his
friend, Granville resident Ginny Sharkey, to start the event in
Granville. The event, a fundraiser for the Licking County Food
Bank, has grown from 400 participants since its inception seven
years ago to over 2000 Turkey Trotters, with participants ranging
from children pushed in strollers to senior citizens. Last year’s
contribution to the Food Bank was $26,000.

Winter Events, continued
The event began when Marilyn Anderson was inspired to
celebrate Granville’s religious historical foundation of the
early settlers. She asked the leadership of the churches
on the four corners of Main and Broadway to offer music
or pageants, and the Granville museum director to show
exhibits depicting early pioneer life. Anderson produced
the event in the following year and added the Granville
Elementary School and the home of Denison’s President,
Robert Good, and his wife, Nancy, to the tour. The Goods
served cookies, a custom that has continued throughout
the event’s 27-year history.

In 1987, Anderson decided the growing event should involve
the local merchants and asked Ruth Owen, Director of the
Granville Business and Professional Association — the
forerunner of the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce — to
take the reins of the event. Owen obliged and the rest, as
they say, is history.
For the past five years, Chamber member Lisa Williams
Englefield, whose family owns Elm’s Pizza Parlor, has
orchestrated the event. Anderson and her husband retired
to Florida, but her legacy remains. Granville resident,
Gloria Hoover, who worked with Anderson on the first tour,
reflects, “I think about Marilyn every
first Saturday in December when I walk
the tour — bumper to bumper — with
visitors local and from miles away.”
As the excitement of holiday festivities
fade, one event holds strong. The highly
popular Granville Farmers Market is
one of a select few in Ohio to continue
through February as a Winter Farmers
Market, where basically everything
except summer produce can be found on
Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to
Noon at Granville Elementary School.
