The five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged engine produces 300 hp at 5500 rpm and
offers 295 lbs./ft. of torque at 1950–5250 rpm. Using the manual transmission, this
is enough to take you from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds in the Volvo S60 R, or 5.9
seconds in the Volvo V70 R. Continuously variable intake and exhaust valve timing
(Dual CVVT) contribute to exhilarating performance throughout the entire range of
engine speeds, without compromising on exhaust emission controls. Dual charge
air coolers, dual fuel pumps, a two-section fuel tank and a racing-type oil pan round
off a highly potent powerplant designed to handle the demands of serious driving.
The engine is also highly refined – its stunning performance and willing surge of

Or, there’s a six-speed automatic with Geartronic that also offers highperformance shifting, especially if you select the Sport shifting mode.

Brembo aluminum four-cylinder brake calipers grip the 330 mm ventilated discs to
provide high-performance braking in a wide range of driving conditions. Light alloy
calipers aid heat dissipation to help maintain performance even after repeated
braking. This, together with lightweight aluminum wheels, results in low unsprung
weight – enhancing the car’s crisp and precise driving manners. For added security,
EBA (Emergency Brake Assistance) detects emergency braking and steps in to
help reduce stopping distance.
AWD WITH INSTANT TRACTION™
Power is continuously distributed between the front and rear wheels by Volvo’s
new pre-charged, electronically controlled, all-wheel drive system – AWD with
Instant Traction™. The difference is noticeable the moment you take off – constant
hydraulic pressure ensures that power is promptly directed to the wheels with
the best traction. Wheel spin is minimized to provide immediate acceleration and
reassuring stability in slippery conditions.
During normal driving on straight and dry roads, the front wheels receive up
to 95% of the power for optimum stability and fuel economy. As the situation
dictates, up to 70% of the power is instantly distributed to the rear wheels if
necessary, to provide maximum stability and traction. And when cornering, the
AWD system instantly channels power where it’s needed most to provide
confident handling throughout the curve.

Quick and responsive steering is perhaps the most important link between road,
car, and driver. Behind the wheel, you can enjoy communicative yet firm steering
that provides progressively less power assistance as your speed increases, for
optimal highway stability. Exceptionally precise steering and balanced feedback

Behind the handling characteristics of a Volvo R model, the Four-C
chassis system plays an integral role. This technology is designed to
utilize the car’s advanced chassis and AWD system to their greatest
potential. Whatever the road or the weather may have in store, an R
model makes every drive a pleasure. At the touch of a button the car’s
character will instantly change from taut, race-inspired handling to all-

day comfort – and back again. But regardless of the chassis mode you
choose, Four-C will continually adapt to your driving situation.
COMFORT

When the road is slippery or uneven, when
driving in town, or when you just want a relaxed
ride. The Comfort chassis mode insulates
the car’s occupants from bumps in the road.
The system prioritizes flexible shock absorption
for smooth and gentle body movement and
exceptional ride comfort.
For a firm but supple sports car feel. The system
prioritizes somewhat stiffer shock absorption and
reacts faster than in Comfort mode. This results in
reduced body movement and precise road behavior,
combined with good riding comfort.
The uncompromising chassis mode for maximum
performance, control, and traction on smooth roads.
The chassis no longer irons out bumps, but conveys
all road surface information directly to the driver.
The system stiffens the shock absorbers to ensure
maximum contact between tire and road. Providing
maximum road-holding, this setting is ideal for
highway driving, or perhaps even on a track, for
situations when road grip has the highest priority.
And when you’ve had your fun, comfort is only a
click away.
ENTERING A CURVE
BRAKING
ACCELERATION
Instantly, more power is transferred to the rear wheels
and the rear shock absorbers stiffen to ensure optimal
take-off performance. This means 0 to 100 km/h within
5.7 seconds for the Volvo S60 R, and 5.9 seconds for
the Volvo V70 R.
The moment you touch the brake pedal, power to the
rear wheels is reduced and the shock absorbers on all
four wheels are adjusted to prepare for optimal braking
performance, minimum pitch, and firm road-holding to
help bring you quickly and safely to a stop.

As the car enters a curve, the Active Performance
Chassis responds by increasing the shock absorbers’
stiffness on both sets of wheels to enhance body
control. In order to keep your pace, the shock absorbers
reconfigure to create a slight degree of oversteer.
At the same time, more power is transferred to the rear
wheels. As the car moves further into the curve, the
stiffness of the front wheel shock absorbers is reduced.
This helps compensate for any tendency to understeer
and assists the driver in maintaining a balanced course
throughout the curve.

R-SCIENCE
As you build up momentum, a number of natural forces take effect. The Four-C system analyzes body movement, speed, wheel movement, steering wheel position and other
parameters 500 times per second. Simultaneously, it adjusts each shock absorber for optimal handling and comfort. At the heart of the system is Volvo’s semi-active suspension
with continuously controlled Monroe-Öhlins shock absorbers and the three dynamic chassis modes: Comfort, Sport and Advanced. The shock absorbers, AWD system, DSTC
system, engine, brakes and steering all synthesize in an electronically controlled system – in response to your style of driving.
MID-CURVE
At the apex of a curve, when the lateral forces are at
their greatest and you want the car to pull you out of
the bend, power is fed to all four wheels – according
to their level of traction – while the chassis minimizes
roll and compensates for any tendencies to under or
over-steer.
EXITING A CURVE
When you drive out of the curve, the system increases
both shock absorber stiffness and power to the front
wheels – increasing stability.
DRIVING STRAIGHT AHEAD
Four-C continuously analyzes the car, road and
driver – instantly adjusting each shock absorber to
suit current conditions and prepare for what’s ahead.

The chassis is a rigid structure that’s designed to resist the torsion
caused by an active drive down a winding road. Then there’s DSTC
and the other chassis technologies – all configured to help keep the
car on track. In the event of an accident, you and your passengers will
have the benefit of Volvo’s world-renowned protection. The safety cage
is designed to provide a protective barrier around the occupants, while

deformation zones and numerous interactive safety systems react to
the impact of a collision.

As darkness falls, you will appreciate the powerful
and effective low and high beams. Bi-Xenon headlights offer you exceptionally broad, long, and
pleasant beam of light in all conditions. Low beam
height is automatically adjusted to provide the best
possible light pattern even when the car is heavily
loaded. Integrated front and rear side-marker lights
make it easier for other road-users approaching
from the side to see your car.

Whiplash is one of the most common traffic injuries,
often resulting from low-speed rear impacts. WHIPS
helps reduce the risk of long-term whiplash injuries.
Integrated into the front seat backrests, WHIPS
supports the spine and neck in a controlled manner,
and is triggered by impacts of sufficient force from
behind.
DSTC enhances driving stability on winding roads
and in slippery situations. By braking one or more
of the wheels and temporarily reducing the engine’s
power, the system instantly helps to correct any
tendency to skid – smoothly and efficiently.

Not surprisingly, the design of the R model is an integral part of its
performance. For instance: a deeper front spoiler provides 25% more
downward thrust, the air duct is enlarged to cool the 300 hp engine,
and bi-xenon headlights improve night vision. Furthermore, R-design
aluminum wheels help cool the brakes and maintain crisp handling, and
double sport tailpipes in stainless steel are an effective finish for the
free-flow parallel exhaust system. And on the Volvo S60 R, there’s a

subtle rear spoiler to reduce lift by 20%. No fuss, just efficient design
for road and track.

than 32,000 km. If the vehicle is to be driven in cold, snowy, or icy weather conditions,
Volvo recommends the use of a suitable winter tire and wheel combination which
will offer better traction under those circumstances. It is also important to note that,
because they are designed for responsive handling, the tires may deliver lower overall ride comfort. It is important to regularly check inflation pressure to assure all tires
meet Volvo’s specifications, and to help reduce the chance of tire rim or vehicle
damage.
