Year-end Tax Tips to Maximize
your Charitable Giving
By Mike Kura – Note: Mike Kura is president of the Haven of Rest Board of Trustees.
A
s the year end approaches,
now is a good time to
consider ways in which
you can use your resources to
help others as well as receive tax
savings. Charitable contributions
that are given by December 31st
may result in a tax deduction for
the donor and, if structured
properly, may also provide his or
her family with income.
Gift of Cash: If you itemize
your tax deductions and give
cash, you may deduct an
amount up to 50% of your
adjusted gross income.
Gift of Highly Appreciated
Stock: Shares of stock and
mutual funds, which you have
owned for at least one year and
have increased in value, can be
a tax-wise gift to Haven of Rest
Ministries. By gifting the
investment to Haven of Rest,
you will avoid paying capital
gains tax on its appreciation and
receive a charitable deduction
for the stock’s full market value.
Charitable IRA Rollover: In
2013 IRA owners 70-1/2 and
older are able to make an IRA
distribution directly to a charity
and not include it as income
(note that no charitable
deduction will be allowed for
the gift). The rollover is
valuable to those who would
prefer their IRA to continue to
experience tax-deferred growth
but are instead required to take
withdrawals to satisfy their
required minimum
distribution.
Consider a planned
giving strategy: It’s not too
late to consider a strategy that
would give you a tax break
this year and provide valuable
benefits your family could
enjoy for years to come.
If you would like to know
more about how year-end
giving can benefit both you
and Haven of Rest, please call
330-535-1563.
Any tax advice contained
herein is of a general nature.
You should seek specific tax
advice from your tax
professional before pursuing
any idea contemplated herein.

arc’s stores once again has selected Haven of
Rest Ministries as one of the beneficiaries of its
2013 “Helping Hungry Families” campaign.
They have teamed with their vendors and will donate a
portion of the purchase price of specific items to Haven
of Rest. A listing of these items is available on Marc’s
website (www.marcs.com) and in local Marc’s stores.
“We are grateful to Marc’s stores for selecting Haven
of Rest,” said Rev. Jeff Kaiser.“We have more needy and
homeless people coming to the Mission for assistance
now than at any other time of the year. A special thankyou goes to FM 97.5 WONE for all their work helping to
promote Marc's “Helping Hungry Families” campaign.”

s I write today, Thanksgiving holiday is just
around the corner as we are preparing to
serve hundreds of meals to the men, women,
Rev. Jeffrey A. Kaiser
and families who will be with us on that special
day. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls and butter, green
beans, corn pudding, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie will be served to
all. Volunteers will give of their time to help serve and interact with the
guests at the Mission.
Many of us are fortunate enough to share this special day with family
and loved ones. It’s a time we gather around the dinner table and reflect
and thank the Lord for each day. At Haven of Rest, we know our guests
well enough to know those who have no family, who are hurting,
struggling with addictions, or have mental or physical health problems. It
can be a tough day for these men and women as they look at their lives
and reflect. To them, the Mission is their family.
In Matthew 25: 35-36 it says, “For I was hungry and you gave me
something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I
was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed
me. I was sick and you looked after me. I was in prison and you came to
visit me.”
Thank you for caring and making Thanksgiving special for those who
are struggling in life. May your Thanksgiving Day be blessed.

Thanks WQMX for the ChristmasJoy
QMX FM 94.9 radio will hold its annual “Tree of Lights”
campaign on December 6 and December 7 to benefit
Haven of Rest Ministries. “This event is an incredible
opportunity to help homeless men, women and children this
Christmas,” says Yvonne Brake, director of development. “A
$5.00 donation lights one bulb on the WQMX three-story “Tree
of Lights” and $200 will light an entire strand!” Listen to
WQMX during its “Tree of Lights” campaign and hear how
Haven of Rest is helping to change lives every day. Radio
personalities will be on hand to take your donation on site, or
you may call Haven of Rest to charge a gift to your credit card.
If you would like you can also give online at
www.havenofrest.org. Just designate your gift for “Tree of
Lights.” “This campaign is truly a blessing,” says Rev. Jeff
Kaiser, executive director, “and we appreciate the desire of the
staff and listeners of WQMX to help poor and homeless
families during Christmas. Just think, each light represents
someone who is making a difference in the lives of needy
people.” Thank you to WQMX and everyone who supports
this year’s campaign.

Thank You!
Thank You!
This year we have seen
over 3,000 new volunteers
go through our orientation
process and get placed
into a volunteer position.
That is in addition to the
hundreds of volunteers
who have been serving for
years! You have all given
so much of your time,
your skills, and your
finances to make a
difference at Haven of Rest
Ministries. The reality is

that we could not do what
we do if it were not for
you! You are a gift from
God. Every time you serve
a meal, teach a class,
mentor someone, give a
child a hug, teach a mom
life skills, help with a
special event, or work in
the office, it makes an
incredible difference in the
lives of the homeless and
hurting people who come
to the Mission. ✞
