BRIDAL SHOWER CROWNING GLORY JosEPH J. Gmo 1201 Bay Street Santa Cruz, Calif. 95060 WHISPERING GLADE . ." . . :' ... .. . J• ~ a .. . • I • REACH FOR THE STARS Sixree~1 yeai·s · hgo we bloomed our first irises and made our first cro~ses. Little did we know that our hobby would grow and expand to the vast' and extent that it does today. . far Feachiog , Welcome,_thcp. to·.oor sixth annual catalog. Your response has been . most gratify.ipg. As in past years, we continue to expand our plantings to better servf )roY. Last summer we purchased another parcel of land which has been completely planted with irises; our plantings now cover · four lots. We are now teaching at Harbor High School here in Santa Cruz, and we'll be able to be in the garden more often to show you around. You are always welcome to brouse around. During week days we'll be home about 3:30p.m. and we'll be here on weekends. Best bloom occurs during the la~t week of April and the first week of May. However, our bloom season is long with plenty of bloom between mid-April and· mid,May. Not all the varieties we grow are listed in this catalog since their supply is limited. You are invited to view these plus thousands of seedlings which will make their debut this spring. Also on display are our future introductions: Center Stage, Dignitary, Eloquent, Ponderosa, Sorcerer, plus some under number. We also grow several types of beardless irises which are on display for your enjoyment. TERMS •. Bay View Gardens is known for its generosity. We enjoy sharing and we will continue this policy of giving a minimum of 100% in extras based .· · on the list price. Since extras are dependent on supply, they must be of · ,.. our selection, though you may list a few you might particularly like . . ·.: :·:And we always include a surprise bonus! ' :' ' . Please ,<;end check with your order. California residents please add 5% sales tax. •Postage rates never seem to end their continual upward climb and constitute our greatest expense. Thus, please add 50 cents for handling or more. if you like which will be covered many times ir. added extras. For tnore distant points and to insure quicker delivery, we suggest adding 35 cents for special handling. Shipments begin in late June and continue through July. Our orders are filled in rotation, so order early to avoid disappointment. We can not . Ji~t all the many latest varieties we grow; thus, if there is some hard-to.· get variety you \vould like, ask us about it. SURPRISE PACKAGE This is our most popular feature, and well it might be! At the end of the season, we always have some very excellent rhizomes of several fine and popular varities still in surplus. We want to share these with you. Send us a sum of money ( $15, $20, $25, or whatever), and we will send you irises with a minimum list value of four times the monetary value -which you send us. We will ship the SURPRISE PACKAGES at the end 'of our shipping seasop.-the last days of July. ~ ' ..... UPWARD TO THE HEIGHTS IN l969 .: .;.~· :. In 1954 we made our first crosses, and, thus, starting ·ai.tr-gi;.eat..adventure in hybridizing. At that time, we set certain goals for our breeding program and began reaching for the unreachable stffi-: -'T~e~e, QUr 1969 introductions, as no previous group of our irises, .represents"Jh~ culmination of our hybridizing efforts toward so many of the goals set so long ago. The road has been long and uneven, but if the star .has not been _ • reached this year, perhaps it has been touched. BRIDAL SHOWER 36 inches, EM _____ ____ __ ______ __ _________ :_____________: .".. ____ $25.00 New Snow was the first white iris that we grew. We never thought that a white iris would impress us, but New Snow did and our white breeding began. With BRIDAL SHOWER the sirmmit is climbed. A pearly white self with subdued yellow beard. _Distinctive with its absolutely horizontal flare, extreme width, serrate!! edge, ana heaV]:. .substance. Combines. the bubble-ruffling of the · Frost~d Starlight li~e, with the· corrugated ruffling typical of the Hinkle line. Good branchi!lg and supervigor. No. 63-116R: ((Frosted Starlight x Demetria) X Nina's Delight). CROWNING GLORY., 34 inches, M ......·........-. ~............................... : $25.00 Whole Cloth impressed us as a truly· unique achievement, and we .set out to combine it with our Frosted Starlight line. CROWNING GLORY represents the convergence and culmination -of both of these lines; thus the significance of the name. A. large flower: with white standards with a light blue midrib which deepens at the base of .the standard. The fall are a nearly true light blue, lightly textwed fo:r i nterest. The fall flare nearly horizontally with intense· bubble-ruffling...Jhe beard is also bluish. Its trueness and uniqueness of color makes this a distinctive mastPrpiece. Heavy demand forces us to limit one to a customer. No. . .. 63-182L: (Frosted Starlight x W.hole Cloth) -X { ( (New Snow x Lady Ilse) x Frosted Starlight) x Froste? StarligHt) : .HC '67. ._ .. JUSTICE 32 inches, L ................................................................ -------- $25.00 . :eJue Rhythm was the first blue iris that we bloomed and we were over- ..• · ·. whelmed; thus we began our quest of producing an iris in the same · · .. · medium blue tones with the refinements of the modern iris. JUSTICE represents the years of effort toward this goal. A glorious, rich, vibrant, glowing royal medium blue of a very true hue. The beard is blue so as to lend harmony to this lush beauty. The almost horizontal falls are nicely ruffled and even slightly laced! It inherited its form from its parent. A truly remarkable iris that will withstand the most unpredictable of Mother Nature's elements. No. 64-27V: ( ( Celestia· x Regina Maria) X Ellen Manor). · . -· SEANCE., 36 inches, ML .................................................................. $25.00 . Snow Flurry first introductcd us to ruffling and off we happily went . to produce the ultimate in ruffled irises. We coined the 'Phrase. bub- . ble-ruffling, to mean an intense, deep, fluting ruffle, and with SEANCE .: we reached the pinnacle of this goal. A large, extremely broad, semi- · flaring flower with the deepest, most intense bubWe-mffling imagiri~ : . able. We would call the color blue-amethyst, sort of a blue-red-violet: · : . color, with the falls slightly redder than the standards. The vigor and ... · ·. ~-.. substance add to the trace-effect. A stalk of this wilt always be a top ·. ::. .. contender for Queen of the Show. Limited stock and heavy demand· _;·. • forces a one to a customer limitation. No. 64-252-0.: (Sterling Silver . · •. X Twilight Sonata). ' · .. TWO MORE 1969 STARS SWAML 26 inches, L ....................................................................... :.. $15.00 Lady Mohr 'first introduced us to those "kooky" colorings, and we have been enticed by them ever since. This border bearded iris is a unique coloring which is difficult to describe. The falls are a blend of blue, yellow, violet, and tan with burnt-gold shoulders and a brownish beard. The standards are also sort of burnt-gold with a tannish infw. sion. As we said, different is the only way to describe SWAMI. The Hower size and rhizome size are in proportion to the height of the stalk. Nothing quite like this one. No. 63-139Z: (Wizard sib X (Pretty Quadroon x Frosted Starlight) ) . WHISPERING GLADE 38 inches, EML ...................................... $25.00 Green Pastures sent us into ecstasies, and launched us in quest of the true green iris. WHISPERING GLADE is not the true green (which is still eluding us and we often feel as if we are fighting Windmills), but what a miraculous color it is! It is a lush, quiet, yet forceful, shade of antique green-gold. The form is flawless and the Hower is large in keeping with its height. -Add a serrated edge, stippled ruffiing, self beard, heavy substance, show-bench branching ·and you have a very desirable item. With two to four buds in each socket, you are insured of a long season of bloom. Its vigor guarantees an instant clump! No. 65-176V.: (Moon River X (Pretty Quadroon x Frosted Starlight) ) . LAUNCHED IN 1968 ·.. CELE.B RATION 34 inches, EM ........................................................ $20.00 A lushy colored beauty with tightly closed standards of a melon-toned apricot and the broad nearly horizontal falls of yellow, pink, white, and orange-all delightfully blended. Ruffied and slightly laced with excellent branching and many buds. Sparsely leafed rhizomes, but it is floriferous. ( (Cream Crest x Graduation Gift) X (Mary Randall x ·."· Full Dress)). HC '66. HAUNTING RHAPSODY 40 inches, E.re .................................... $20.00 A different color best described as a lavender-orchid.
