EDITOR’S NOTE In the pages to follow we’ve compiled just a handful of stories that speak to the true spirit of 10,000 Reasons. If there is a theme among them, it might be that our students and our donors alike are strivers, believers and humble servants of Salem State’s highest ideals. We hope you see yourself represented here as well. If you’d like to see your own story told in the pages of Impact, then please be in touch. CONTACT US: campaign@salemstate.edu 2 SALEM STATE IMPACT Foundation Report It’s been a very busy, very fruitful year for the Salem State University Foundation! Tom Brady’s campus visit for the Salem State Series in May attracted serious media scrutiny, mostly due to the still-unfolding NFL drama known as “Deflategate,” but also because of increased skepticism in Massachusetts about the relationship between public universities and their nonprofit foundation partners. In the weeks that followed, one Boston reporter went so far as to imply that proceeds from the Series, which were used to fund event expenses such as Mr. Brady’s speaking fee, would have been better spent on student financial assistance. April 24: October 16: Below: Luke Griffin and family warmed the Berry Library archives with a gift of rare books collected by Luke’s father Stephen. The Griffin Family Archives collection, which may be valued at over $100,000, also honors Luke’s late wife, Barbara (Johnson) Griffin, Salem State class of 1972, a teacher and scholar of Victorian literature. Below: Danversport Yacht Club welcomed more than 150 student scholarship winners, along with their families and benefactors, to our annual recognition reception. March 12: Above: A thriving Florida alumni community gathered to celebrate the 10,000 Reasons campaign and launch it anew in the Sunshine State. The weekend would not have been complete without the Sullivan and Crosby Society reception hosted in fine fashion by Tom ’65 and Pat ’66 Marmen of Cotuit, Mass. On the surface, it’s a valid thought—putting every available dollar to work directly on behalf of our students and their collective bottom line sounds good to everyone. Hopefully you recognize it as the very mission of our foundation. The flaw in this reasoning, of course, is that some dollars simply aren’t available for that noble purpose. Event proceeds, by definition, do not exist unless the event also exists, and the 2015 Salem State Series featuring Tom Brady could not have existed without Tom Brady. The MVP quarterback’s Q&A session with Jim Gray attracted record Series ticket sales and sponsorships—enough total revenue, in fact, to fund the event in its entirety. No tuition monies, student fees, public funds, or donations to the university were spent on the evening. It was by any measure a fantastic installment of the Series, and we’re grateful to Mr. Brady for upholding his commitment to appear despite some challenging personal circumstances. ...annual giving— above and beyond campaign gifts and pledges—is the most immediate way to impact our ability to help students. As caretaker of the gifts that you have entrusted to Salem State University, the foundation strives to be fully transparent about how we work and where monies are allocated. The Series aftermath reminds us that more transparency is always a good thing. SALEM STATE IMPACT 3 2014-15 FISCAL YEAR IN PICTURES May 30: Below: James L. McKeown ’77 Memorial Plaza and the adjoining North Campus quad welcomed a crowd of 400+ for an Alumni Weekend celebration under the stars. Guests were invited to “rediscover their reason” and many pledged campaign gifts on the spot using the university’s new MobileCause platform. May 7: Above: New England Patriots all-star quarterback Tom Brady touched down on Alumni Field for the latest installment of the Salem State Series. Moderated by renowned sportscaster Jim Gray, it set attendance records and garnered national media attention. The event’s ticket sales and sponsorships netted a $40,000 profit that will be reinvested into future Series events. The MVP quarterback’s Q&A session with Jim Gray attracted record Series ticket sales and sponsorships— enough total revenue, in fact, to fund the event in its entirety. You should know, therefore, that when we report having raised $19,545,726 for the 10,000 Reasons campaign as of the fiscal year end (June 30, 2015), it doesn’t mean that those dollars have all arrived in our coffers. This total includes gifts pledged by donors that may not be realized in cash for several years. It includes gifts that have been realized, but that may not be spendable for several years, such as certain endowment contributions. It also includes planned estate gifts—19 to be exact—totaling an estimated $2,470,000. By the time a planned gift is fulfilled, its value will likely have fluctuated in one direction or the other; for this reason, and to avoid inflating our numbers, we cap the total value of planned gifts that can be counted toward the campaign goal at $5 million. The long and the short of this explanation is that the 10,000 Reasons campaign, as successful as it has been so far, has not provided us with $19,545,726 in cash that we can spend this very moment. This is why annual giving—above and beyond campaign gifts and pledges—is so essential: it’s the most immediate way to impact our ability to help students. At the same time, our fundraising efforts must remain rooted in a long-term vision that requires equal parts optimism, pride and—yes—careful accounting. Yours truly, Cynthia McGurren ’83 Executive Director, Salem State University Foundation, Vice President of Institutional Advancement Jim Muse ’83 President, Salem State University Foundation PICTURED ABOVE Gifts to the Salem State University Foundation made between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015, totaled $ 3,814,724, leaving just one-fifth of our $ 25,000,000 campaign goal still to raise in the fifth year of 10,000 Reasons. Fifty-six new funds have been added to the endowment in that time, bringing the total number of funds to 199 and their total value to $ 25,223,665, a 109 percent increase since the campaign’s start. SALEM STATE IMPACT 5 True Grit Couple’s Gift Parallels Their Commitment Overseas 6 SALEM STATE IMPACT Jim Ansara ’10H turned down offers to serve as a trustee at two prestigious private schools before ultimately accepting President Pat Meservey’s 2009 invitation to join the board at Salem State. Meservey, still early in her tenure, had already displayed a keen eye for what our campus could become, and she knew Ansara’s business experience would be valuable: he had built his company, Shawmut Design and Construction, into one of the top firms in the country before selling it to his employees in 2006. “She was incredibly authentic,” recalled Ansara earlier this summer, “and she was very serious about putting the long-term needs of the university first. I couldn’t help but want to collaborate.” The Shawmut sale provided Ansara and his wife Karen the means to establish a donor-advised fund at the Boston Foundation, the premier community foundation in New England. Jim had imbued his company with a strong spirit of community service from the beginning—employees regularly volunteer with nonprofits and participate in service projects—and the fund was the perfect vehicle for Jim and Karen to carry that spirit forward into their post-Shawmut years. While Jim eased his way out of Shawmut’s day-to-day operations, together the couple jumped headfirst into a life of philanthropy. The Ansaras’ first serious charitable gifts originated in part from an earlier trip to Latin America when they were just starting a family. Karen had quit a busy career in political organizing when they adopted their son, choosing instead to focus full-time on parenting. Now witnessing firsthand the effects of poverty in Latin America, especially on women and children, she and Jim were moved to adopt again—this time three girls from Ecuador. It was quickly becoming clear where their growing philanthropy ought to focus. “Seeing the poverty that our own daughters were born into inspired us to try to end that problem in some specific places,” said Karen. “With more resources and opportunities, we hoped no parent would ever again have to give up a child.” For the better part of the next decade, the Ansaras made a series of grants to local organizations working to keep impoverished families together. It wasn’t until Jim signed on at Salem State that he and Karen began to see the parallels between their work overseas and life here on the North Shore, their home of 22 years. Jim had been wooed by President Meservey’s vision, but it was the university’s dedication to social justice that ultimately inspired him to serve. “Salem State provides access to a future,” he said. “One of the common threads linking poverty in America with poverty around the world is a lack of education, so investing in college students is entirely strategic. They go on to make our communities stronger.” Around the same time, the Ansaras were becoming involved in Haiti, where they had made a grant supporting the work of Partners in Health following the deadly 2008 floods. Jim travelled to the country in 2009 to meet with Paul Farmer, the nonprofit’s celebrated founder, who convinced him that investing in the buildout of the public sector was the most sustainable path to Haiti’s recovery. “I was initially wary,” said Jim, “because the Haitian government was so weakened at the time. But Paul’s previous work in Rwanda was very compelling. With the crippling January 2010 earthquake, the need in Haiti—and the Ansaras’ involvement—increased exponentialy. Jim would split time between Haiti and his home in Essex for the next five years. Karen Ansara fondly recalls President Meservey’s own personal response to the Haiti earthquake, just days after it struck. At Karen’s request, the president invited about 20 Haitian-American Salem State students to her office in Meier Hall to share how the disaster had impacted their lives. “Pat listened deeply to each student’s pain and directed that conversation with exquisite grace,” said Ansara. “I could tell she cared about the whole health and well-being of each of her students.” That spring, the Ansaras received honorary doctorates from Salem State in recognition of their humanitarian efforts. “We were amazed by the diversity of students crossing the stage,” said Karen, “and by the array of different shoe styles peeking out from under their gowns! They came here from so many countries. Each one had overcome unthinkable obstacles to attend Salem State, finance their educations and obtain practical degrees that could be put to use revitalizing their home lands. Access to education here isn’t much different from access to healthcare in Haiti, Rwanda or West Africa. (Jim has been renovating district hospitals in both Sierra Leone and Liberia, as well as overseeing the design of a new national teaching hospital in Liberia.) Survival shouldn’t depend on economic means.” “We really believe in making unrestricted gifts, in resisting specificity,” adds Jim. “Being able to trust in the leadership is part of that. But more important is that the breadth of the challenge demands flexibility. At Salem State, as in Haiti, constraints on resources are the biggest factor. Dollars are stretched a lot further here, and we know our gift will be very well spent.” Only in the last year have the Ansaras cut their foreign travel back to a week per month. That doesn’t mean they’re any less busy. In addition to expanding their grantmaking to Africa and Nepal, Karen remains heavily involved in the governance of multiple nonprofits, including Oxfam America and the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, and Jim is still a full-time volunteer with Partners in Health, where he has recently begun work on Haiti’s new national reference laboratory. They admit that the challenge of the work is part of its allure, but anyone can see that Jim and Karen Ansara’s root motivation is social justice. “Haiti is such a special case,” says Jim. “Here you have a country of 9.5 million people, 70 percent of whom are unemployed, founded on the only successful slave revolt in the history of the world. The government is running an informal economy at best. Corruption is a total stereotype—the truth is that there are so few resources to begin with. The inequalities are overwhelming—and it’s barely 600 miles from South Beach, Florida.” “We don’t think of it as charity,” says Karen. “It’s our responsibility.” SALEM STATE IMPACT 9 What’s your reason? salemstate.edu/reasons REASON 7228 Danielle Terrell ’16 “Salem State has helped me to develop skills that will be critical in my career. Now I’m excited for my next goal—to attend medical school in Boston.” 10 SALEM STATE IMPACT 10,301 Reasons? Viking Challenge a Viral Success The first three days of June provided the setting for Salem State’s first-ever online giving challenge. The Viking Challenge was initiated by a $20,000 matching gift promise from campaign co-chairs Kim Gassett-Schiller ’83 and Henry Bertolon ’74. Their offer was simple: reel in our 10,000th donor to the 10,000 Reasons campaign, and they’d each cut a $10,000 check to the Salem State Foundation. From there, with the prompting of the university’s social media team and some savvy volunteers, it was alumni and students who largely took over the effort. Check out the online action that grew the campaign donor base from just over 9,000 to a staggering 10,301 in just 72 hours! SALEM STATE IMPACT 11 Rick and Jean Walsh were on hand for the hallowed “passing of the books” that commemorated the opening of the Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons in August 2013. 12 SALEM STATE IMPACT Family Business Scholarship Award Champions Self-Made Students A visit to Finz restaurant this past April found Jean Walsh ’71 and her husband Rick genially lunching with the six latest recipients of the Walsh Family Award. The light-spangled waters off Pickering Wharf filled the big picture window behind the hosts. Any passerby would have assumed it to be a family celebration. One end of the table discussed job interview strategies. The other reminisced with Jean about the challenges of high school chemistry. Rick’s 50th high school reunion was coming up soon, and he was looking forward to seeing former classmates. Somehow, every thread of the conversation turned on a note of gratitude. The student across from Rick, a social work major, had fallen off a roof last winter, injuring his back. “Without your scholarship,” he told the Walshes, “I would have had to choose between paying medical bills and paying tuition.” Jean and Rick, in turn, spent more time giving thanks than receiving it. “We are so impressed by each of your stories,” Jean said. “What a wonderful variety of interests, and you’ve clearly worked so hard. Thank you for sharing a little bit of your lives with us.” Jean and Rick established the Walsh Family Award in the early stages of the 10,000 Reasons campaign, committing $30,000 annually to be divided among six scholarship recipients. They also donate $20,000 in unrestricted annual contributions, for a total campaign gift of $400,000. With their gift came the opportunity for them to name the university’s writing center, housed on the first floor of the Berry Library, in honor of Rick’s mother, Mary. “The campaign was definitely the trigger for our gift,” said Rick. “We were fortunate enough to be able to do it, and education is so important. We’ve always stressed that with our own kids.” Rick initially had wanted to name the writing center after his wife—that is, before she talked him out of it. “Mary’s support and motivation are really what drove Rick to be as successful as he is,” said Jean. “Plus, she was such an avid reader of absolutely everything. She was always at the library. It made sense to honor her this way.” The Mary G. Walsh Writing Center Mary G. Walsh, inspiration for generations of Walshes and Salem State students alike was formally dedicated at a ceremony in August 2013, with Jean, Rick and many of their family members in attendance. Education—and teaching, in particular—has long been a family affair for the Walshes. Rick taught college and graduate level courses for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and then pursued a career in human resources that led him to a managing director role at Fidelity, where he recently retired. Jean taught English at Everett High School until the first of her two children was born. Both kids, daughter Erin and son Ryan ’08, are now pursuing busy teaching careers—she as a reading specialist and he as a high school history teacher. As it turns out, Ryan Walsh got his first taste of the action while working as a tutor right here in the university’s learning center, the precursor to today’s writing center. His mother remembers with pride the moment when she knew his understanding of the vocation had crystalized. They were trading war stories over the phone when he paused and said, “Mom, they have to learn to help themselves.” Ever the teacher herself, Jean is quick to turn that recollection into a larger lesson. “Being given the tools and helping yourself is the foundation for a whole lifetime of learning,” she said. “It’s what Salem State gave me and it’s what Rick and I are hoping these students get, too.” With lunch at Finz winding down, restaurant owner George Carey stopped by to greet the table. He said he has been employing Salem State students going on 15 years, and that he, too, had been proud to support the 10,000 Reasons campaign. The affirmation appeared to invigorate Jean Walsh. “I hope people continue to contribute,” she said. “I hope more alumni contribute. The university just doesn’t get enough credit. Students should be very proud of the education they’re getting here. They, as well as the university, deserve recognition and support. I’d call it an excellent return on investment.” SALEM STATE IMPACT 13 MEET THE 2015 WALSH FAMILY SCHOLARS The Walsh Family Award provides six students with $ 5,000 annually throughout their undergraduate experience at Salem State. It is awarded by the university’s scholarship committee, which selects recipients based on GPA and an application essay. “We want the award to remain open to diverse students, and to reward academic achievement,” says Jean Walsh. “This year’s group may be the best we’ve ever had.” Impact sat down with two of this year’s Walsh Family Scholars to learn more. REASON 539 Nicole Fabiano ’16 nursing Nicole Fabiano has had her heart set on a career in nursing since at least sophomore year of high school. “Maybe even earlier than that,” she says. “It’s just who I am. I’m a planner.” The 21-year-old Lakeville native will graduate in the spring with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and an extensive catalog of clinical experience already under her belt. This past May she concluded an internship in the infant and toddler medical-surgical wing at Boston Children’s Hospital, and by June she was already beginning work as a certified nursing assistant with the South Coast Hospital Group. She’ll be making rounds on the rehab floors of two separate facilities through the end of the current academic year. “It’s mostly hips and knees,” she says, “but really, you see everything. I’m excited to apply what I’ve learned and get a taste of what real nursing is all about.” Nicole chose Salem State for the strong reputation of its nursing program and because it’s cost friendly. Since she’s solely responsible for all of her educational expenses, scholarships and financial aid have been a top concern of hers for a long time. “There was never a doubt that I had to get a college degree,” she says, “but the value had to be there.” After her scholarships, which include the Walsh Family Award and a nursing-specific award from her high school, Nicole figures she will owe about $20,000 in student loans. It’s the maximum debt she was willing to take on, but she says it’s a small price to pay for the career of her dreams. “I live and breathe nursing,” she says, “and I love it. I don’t know what I’d do without it.” With her degree in hand, Nicole eventually plans on specializing in labor and delivery, or possibly neonatal intensive care, which she experienced firsthand as an intern at Beverly Hospital. “It’s not always good—and when it’s bad, it’s bad,” she says. “But the extreme gratitude that parents have, and being a part of bringing their baby into the world…it’s one of the most rewarding things ever.” 14 SALEM STATE IMPACT REASON 7261 Gaetano Mortillaro ’17 (pictured with Sen. Bruce Tarr) political science / business administration Knowing how tough it is to get into law school these days, Gaetano Mortillaro, who often goes by “Thomas” around campus, is hoping some hands-on experience in the Massachusetts State House will pay dividends down the road. He was one of four interns working in state senate minority leader Bruce Tarr’s office this summer, and he’s already weighing his own political ambitions. “I think I’d like to run for some type of office eventually,” he says, “but that’s an unstructured goal. I just know I want to help people. I’m not in it for the money. If I can actually make a difference, then that’s what would be the most rewarding.” In proud Italian tradition, Thomas spends every Sunday afternoon at home in Gloucester, gathered around the dinner table alongside his brother, uncles and father, with whom he is particularly close. He and his dad both live with a rare skeletal disorder known as SED, which requires frequent and highly specialized treatment. At one point, following a spate of major surgeries, Thomas’ round-the-clock care kept his father out of work for the better part of a year. It was enough financial pressure to dry up any college savings. The challenges of everyday life have given Thomas, who is also an Eagle Scout, more perspective than most. “When you’re not handed everything, I think it’s easier to understand what other people might be going through,” he says. “People’s struggles are so rarely a direct reflection of their effort. Anyone can get stuck! Even the cost of commuting to Boston for an internship, for many of us, is nearly impossible. In the absence of more government investment in just this kind of thing, I’m grateful to people like the Walshes for making up the difference.” Knowing that financial constraints will guide his law school decisions too, Thomas is rounding out his portfolio with wideranging studies. “They want you to follow your own interests, then bring that to your law education and career,” he says. “I’m taking biology classes, I’m reading Renaissance literature—it’s all part of being a self-motivator and putting effort into your own education. The world owes you nothing. But if I want to do something, I’ll do it. I don’t care how much work it takes.” DEDICATED TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS At the heart of the university’s commitment to academic excellence lie its efforts to produce graduates who can communicate clearly and effectively, both in person and in print. Assistant professor Tristan Abbott, director of the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center, estimates that the facility receives north of 1,500 visits each semester from people seeking help with their writing skills. Writing center tutors take a creditbearing practicum course in which they learn about rhetoric and composition pedagogy. “We look at writing as an ongoing process that includes thinking of ideas, drafting and revising,” says Abbott. “We take a holistic approach and we try to improve the writers more than we try to improve the writing.” In a typical session, tutors begin by helping their students interpret what the professor wants to see in the assignment. They determine an order of concerns, focus on the most pressing issues and try to avoid line editing or type corrections. They also take special care not to insert themselves into the assignment. “We want our students to have their own voices,” says Abbott. “The process is entirely collaborative.” Top: Filtered sunlight and comfortable chairs are the setting for student-tutor collaborations in the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center. Here assistant director Carolyn Strain ’09, right, consults with social work/psychology major Nathania Francois ’15. All writers on campus, including faculty members and ESL learners, are encouraged to use the writing center as a resource. Students who speak any nonEnglish language are also encouraged to attend tutor-led English conversation groups, which the center introduced last year. “There’s a significant psychological barrier that happens when engaging with a new culture,” says Abbott, “especially during the first few months. By providing a comfortable place to simply practice speaking English, we’re trying to help the community get over that hump and make the most of their time here.” SALEM STATE IMPACT 15 ‘So Lucky’ A Humble Champion Steps Down By TAYLOR SHEA DUNN “Learn the fundamentals, get better every day, and don’t worry about wins —they will come.” —Tim Shea 16 SALEM STATE IMPACT At a celebration during alumni weekend in May, retiring athletic director Tim Shea ’83G made sure to credit his successful career to good luck and the hard work of many people besides himself. More than 300 people surrounded him as he spoke from center court in Twohig Gymnasium—colleagues, coaches, players, teammates, friends, and family, including his wife of 43 years, Sheila, and his two daughters, Mackenzie and me. This outpouring of support left me with one thought above all others that evening: in being able to call this humble champion Dad, I’m the lucky one. You don’t have to look far to see my dad’s influence all over Salem State. The trophy cases are full of memorabilia showcasing achievements and accolades that will be remembered in the chronicles of Viking folklore forever. The Gassett Fitness Center itself is a facility he long dreamed about and worked hard to make a reality. But his legacy will shine brightest in the community he embraced so wholeheartedly. “The relationships I’ve developed in my roles as coach and then athletic director are life-changing and will be life-lasting,” he said. “Seeing our many athletes move on to successful careers and families is so rewarding and satisfying for me. It means much more to me than any honors bestowed.” Words like these are the very essence of my dad. It’s the people around him that make him proud. More than most, my dad has intuitively bridged the gap between the city of Salem and its university. One day this summer I was visiting my parents for breakfast when their home phone rang. It was a Salem woman calling about basketball camp for her granddaughter. Dad hasn’t overseen the girls’ basketball camp for years, but he still fields these calls almost daily. I don’t know what was said on the other end of the line, but he hung up gently, turned to me and said, “Do you know we provide sports camp scholarships to Salem kids? Need is everywhere. If you come across a deserving kid, don’t forget that.” He may be retired from Salem State, but he’s still a big part of the “we” that holds this place together. Thanks to his lifetime of service, he always will be. In our family, life has revolved around Salem State for over three decades. We’ve lived steps from campus, we’ve walked our dogs every morning through its grounds, we’ve planned vacations around its athletic tournaments and conferences, and when it was time to give back, we’ve donated to its important causes. Dad traces the Shea spirit of philanthropy to his mother, Helen Francis Shea. “Any legacy left behind by any of the Sheas can be directly attributed to our mom,” he said. She raised eight children on very little. What the Shea kids lacked in resources they made up for with a mother’s love, a drive to succeed and the support of each other. Their bond eventually became the inspiration behind the Helen F. Shea Memorial Scholarship at Salem State, initiated with my dad’s guidance over 16 years ago. Our extended family has been contributing to the scholarship ever since, and seeing it officially awarded in 2013 was a proud moment for all of us. It’s been a fitting tribute to its namesake, too: the inaugural scholarship recipient was the child of a single mother from Salem who, like my grandmother, was also a nurse. If you’re wondering if Tim Shea is happy in retirement, the smile I see on him lately should leave no doubt. It helps that a longtime goal of his became a reality this year when the athletic endowment reached $1 million. Last fall, as my dad was announcing his retirement, the fund was still some $200,000 shy of that mark. Many of you reading this made gifts and pledges in the intervening months, and in a show of teamwork perhaps rivaled only by the 1986 Lady Vikings basketball team, you made an important dream come true. I’m just grateful—and lucky, indeed—to be along for the ride. Photos, top to bottom: The Vikings were headline news when they won a national championship in 1986. The extended Shea family gathers in Twohig Gymnasium to celebrate Tim’s three decades of service to Salem State Coach Shea assumes what would become a familiar position on the sidelines during a Salem State women’s basketball game, circa 1985. Shea’s legacy was honored with two commemorative namings on the occasion of his retirement. The Twohig floorboards will now and forever wear the name Tim Shea Court, and the athletic endowment he worked so hard to grow has been rechristened by the board as the Timothy P. Shea ’83G Athletic Endowment. SALEM STATE IMPACT 17 Senior Gifts Soar 2015 Graduates Break (Another) Giving Record Above: President Meservey, vice president Cynthia McGurren ’83 and alumni association president Pamela Doherty ’92 accept the largest-ever senior class gift from student philanthropy committee members (and graduating seniors) Philip Burns, Student philanthropy is still in its infancy at Salem State, but it’s no baby. The Class of 2015’s senior gift campaign powered its way to a fundraising record for the third year running, tallying an impressive $5,385 by commencement time—a total contributed almost entirely by the university’s newest alumni. The money will be awarded as a need-based scholarship to an incoming freshman in the current fall semester. Alyssia Johnson and Erica Bourbeau Inspired in part by the larger 10,000 Reasons campaign’s volunteer summit this past February, the student philanthropy committee credits its success to a more professional fundraising approach. They made strategic outreach a top priority this year, even going so far as to put a $1,000 proposal in front of the student government association, which ultimately paid off. “Our goal and our inspiration was to help someone realize their passion here at Salem State in the same way we’ve been lucky enough to do,” said outgoing committee president Erica Bourbeau ’15. “Let’s hope the tradition remains strong and only grows from here.” 18 SALEM STATE IMPACT THE C R O S B Y S O C I E T Y YOUR PHILANTHROPIC LEGACY AT SALEM STATE WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS! Perhaps because I was a commuter—which was about 90 percent of the student body at the time—as well as a first-generation college graduate, I hadn’t thought much about what it means to be part of an alumni tradition. Yet here I was with a rewarding career taking shape, knowing I wouldn’t have gone anywhere in life without a public education, so I began to consider how I might give back a little. Well, one thing led to another, and in 1982 I found myself accepting a position on the Salem State College Board of Trustees, appointed by Governor Ed King to a five-year term. I was just 32 years old and the first woman ever appointed to the board. Initially I served on the student life committee, reviewing student services and disciplinary procedures. It was almost like a second job. But I was learning something new every single day, and I was seeing for the first time, really, how hard people work at this school—students, faculty and administrators alike. It was so worth it. When the time came to renew my term, it was an easy decision for me to stay on for five more years. Even after I rotated off the board in 1992, I did everything I could to stay involved with my alma mater. I participated in the presidential search that brought Pat Meservey to Salem, I sat on various committees and I started thinking more seriously about my philanthropy. You never lose what your degree gives you—beyond the specific skills, the focus and discipline are so important, too. To get such a solid and well-rounded education was an enormous boost for me starting out. If you’re like me, and you never put your degree to use in its intended field, then the overall quality of your education becomes critical. That’s what I was thinking about when I made my first gift, just $25, as a newly minted trustee in 1982. The same thought stayed with me over the years as my husband Gerald and I continued to increase our support, making our first significant gift to the university in 2001 and then our leadership-level gift to the fledgling 10,000 Reasons campaign. I’m proud to be a part of the steering committee that put this campaign together during a transformative time for Salem State. We were only just approaching university status and there were a lot of questions hanging in the air: Who are we exactly? What are our true capabilities? As a public school, how will a campaign of any amount be received? The only things we knew for sure were that a comprehensive campaign needed to happen, and that it would require a really personal approach. The names that fill this magazine are the result of that approach. I hope seeing them makes you proud of the way that Salem State has risen, over many years, to heights that most of us never even imagined. Even when we were just a small handful of buildings surrounded by fields and—when it rained—treacherous mud flats, what happened on this campus was unique, special and necessary. Our university today is worthy of everyone’s consideration. It always has been.
