Bukit Peninsular Bukit Peninsular Uluwatu Beach Suluban Beach Hidden beach at a surfer’s paradise Uluwatu beach might just be one of the smallest on the island, but it could also be one of the most beautiful. With dramatic rock formations, caves and big crashing waves from the surf breaks, it’s definitely worth the walk down the cliff side to check this little place out. The beach is mainly used for experienced surfers to come in and out of the sea to reach the famous Uluwatu surf spot, but you can climb up some steps to a the local Delpi warung (cafe) to get the best views of the Indian ocean, and to do some pro surf watching. Suluban beach just to the right of Uluwatu is more swimmer friendly so it’s worth visiting this spot during low tide when you can reach this mostly inaccessible beach. 16 Secret Swimming Spot Getting There From Seminyak, drive south past Jimbaran and onto the coastal road where you will see signs to Uluwatu. Once there, you will see cafes and bars such as Single Fin at the top of the cliff. Walk down the steps until you get to the beach. 17 Canggu Canggu Villa Phoenix Airbnb Crate Café Beautiful boho surf pad ‘Life’s crate’ at this cool café Crate café has to be the coolest kid on the block. With its soundcloud beats blaring out through the open-air front and onto the deck, hip young things with nose piercings and 5 panel caps hop off their motorbikes and gather at this neighbourhood meeting spot. This bohemian hideaway is positioned a stones throw away from Echo Beach, close enough to hear the waves crashing while you laze by the pool, and if you hop up to the second floor balcony you’re in a good position to do a surf check. A two bedroomed villa that can be rented by the room, what strikes you is the amount of design and detail that goes into making this place a home. The villa is filled with art found locally in Bali as well as artifacts picked up from around the world. The whole space is designed for outdoor living, with the wall-less kitchen and living room, to the lush green plants dotted in every corner. Staff are on hand to cook your morning banana pancakes, and dog lovers will be delighted by the live in host ‘Kiss Kiss’, their puppy. Like any café in Bali worth their salt, Crate is serious about their coffee, and their breakfasts are just as strong. With names like ‘ Why So Cereal’ (frozen banana + goodies), ‘Hipstar’ acai bowls and ‘Goldilocks’ porridge (genius), this place is all about being young and fun. It attracts Canggu’s creative crowd, and holds monthly exhibitions by the local community reflecting Bali’s exciting creative scene that’s thriving. With their own little moto ‘Life’s Crate’, I know where I’ll be spending my mornings in Bali. airbnb.com/rooms/899419 $100 per room per night Echo Beach, Canggu 34 Batu Bolong, Canggu (on the same strip as Betelnut & Monsieur Spoon) +62 812 38943040 @cratecafe Crate Café 35 Seminyak Seminyak Motel Mexicola Kilo Kitsch cocktail charmer Step inside the crazy retro world of Latino loving Motel Mexicola. Bold, bright and beautiful, this place has to been seen to be believed. The interiors have been decked out with the imagination of Quentin Tarantino, all crucifixes, mirrors, melted candles and brilliant colours. My favourite spot is the cute little booths decorated with neon framed ‘Virgin Mary’ pictures and kitsch black and white chequered tiles. Head down to Mexicola for a cheeky margarita or two, and kick-start your evening off with a dose of fun. Laid back lounge Motel Mexicola, Jalan Kayujati No. 9 X, Petitenget Beach, Seminyak Jl. There’s Californian vibes all around with cactuses sitting on carpets matched with cool industrial concrete walls. The Kilo concept encourages it’s guests to share, which is great as you’ll have a hard time choosing between delicious dishes such as ‘Wasabi Tuna Tartare’, ‘Salt Baked Snapper’ and the ’24-Hour Pork Belly’. With an emphasis on using local ingredients, the menu is presented under ‘Raw’, ‘Warm’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Green’ and ‘Sweets’, and don’t forget to try their bespoke cocktails for the full Kilo experience. 66 67 Ubud Ubud Tampak Siring Bone Carving village Mas Antique’s village The Bone Collector You may see examples of bull and buffalo bone carvings appearing in shops on your travels around Bali, but I suggest making a trip up to the specialist ‘Bone Carving’ village of Tampak Siring to see the masters at work. Ubud is known as the creative hub of Bali, and each village surrounding it has it’s own unique skill that has been passed on by generations before it. The quiet streets of the village are dotted with store fronts where you can meet the bone carvers themselves, and kindly ask if you can pop and see their workshops which are usually just behind their shops. Visiting the artisans themselves also means that you have a greater choice of what’s on offer, and most do custom orders so you can come with your own design to have carved into the skulls. Nearby is the sacred ‘Tirta Empul Temple’ famous for it’s holy water, so you can make a trip to see both while you’re here. 84 Getting There The village of Tampak Siring is a 30min drive north of Ubud town. Once you have arrived, there are many shop fronts selling their wares although I recommend ‘Ida Bagus Tantra’. Joyful Javanese furniture For those of you that go weak at the knees at the sight of brightly coloured Balinese doors and think it’s perfectly practical to want to sleep in an antique Balinese day bed, I’ve found just the place for you. A short 10-minute drive south out of Ubud is the village of Mas, known best for it’s tradition of woodcarving and also home to a collection of lovely antique and wooden furniture. My favourite store of them all is Tan Celagi Antique which stocks antique joglo furniture from Java. Think 20ft wide carved wooded walls, turquoise painted screens and intricately painted tall wooden doors. They work with international shipping companies to make that impulse buy that bit smoother. Another good shop is Jati Mas Antik furniture, which sells doors galore down the road. Getting There Your best bet is to ask a taxi driver to take you the short 10 minutes from Ubud to the village of Mas. There are rows of furniture stores along Jalan Raya Mas. 85
